Roman Catholic Priest Murdered in Mexico (CNA/EWTN News).- Authorities are investigating the murder of another Cath-olic priest in Mexico who was bound and stabbed to death in his room. Father Luis López Villa, parish priest of San Isidro Labrador in Mexico State, was found dead in his room shortly after 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The suspects, who entered the rectory after breaking into the church, made enough noise to raise the suspicions of neighbors, who alerted church staff to the incident. When the staff arrived, they found the 71-year-old priest dead in his room with his hands and feet tied and a stab wound in his neck and chest. Fr. Villa is the 18th priest to be murdered in Mexico in the last six years, with many more having been assaulted or kidnapped. In May, a priest was stabbed at the conclusion of Mass in Mexico City’s Cathedral, though he survived the at-tack. Cardinal Norberto Rivera, Archbishop of Mexico, sent his condolences "of the Diocese of Nezahualcóyotl and of the whole Church in the country for the murder of the priest." He said he offered his prayers in solidarity with the other bishops of the coun-try, and prayed "to God our Lord for the eternal rest of the priest and the con-version of those who perpetrated this damnable deed." The Mexican Cardinal also urged the authorities to ensure that “this heinous crime does not go unpunished."
WHY WE EVANGELIZE
We evangelize because we have found a living hope of the satisfaction of our deepest de-
sires, and we long to invite everyone to the wedding feast!
Those who have tasted the living hope of this wedding feast feel compelled to invite oth-
ers, like St. Paul: “woe to me if I do not preach the gospel” (1 COR 9:16) If we do not
feel compelled in this way, perhaps we are in need of being more deeply evangelized our-
selves. That’s okay, for at every stage of our journey we’re in need of deeper conversion.
If we continue to open our hearts ever more deeply to God’s love, it will flow out of us
with greater ease & naturalness.
But if this is to happen, as Pope Francis, says below, we must have a contemplative spir-
it—-a heart thirsting for divine love and eager to drink at its fountain, the open heart of
Christ. In other words, we must learn to pray. True evangelization is always and only the
fruit of a deep life of prayer. For the “authencity of the Christian life is measured by the
depth of one’s prayer,” wrote St. John Paul II. Prayer is “an art that must humbly learnt
from the lips of the Divine Master, almost imploring like the first disciples: “Lord, teach
us to pray” (Lk 11:1) (April 17, 2005)!
This “wanting to learn how to pray” is especially important for the evangelist. As St. John
of the Cross wrote:
Let those, then, who are singularly active, who think they can win the world
with their preaching and exterior works, observe here that they would profit
the Church and please God much more...were they to spend at least half of
this time with God in prayer...They would then certainly accomplish more,
and with less labor by one work than they otherwise would by a thou-
sand...Without prayer they would do a great deal of hammering but accom-
plish little, and sometimes nothing, and even at times cause harm...However
much they may appear to achieve externally, they will in substance be ac-
complishing nothing (without a life of deep prayer)
(Spiritual Canticle, 29:3)
