PROVERBS 13:1-25



Accepting Discipline

Text:

Proverbs 13:1-25,

1 A wise son heeds his father’s instruction,

but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.

2 From the fruit of their lips people enjoy good things,

but the unfaithful have an appetite for violence.

3 Those who guard their lips preserve their lives,

but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.

4 A sluggard’s appetite is never filled,

but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.

5 The righteous hate what is false,

but the wicked make themselves a stench

and bring shame on themselves.

6 Righteousness guards the person of integrity,

but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

7 One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;

another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.

8 A person’s riches may ransom their life,

but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes.

9 The light of the righteous shines brightly,

but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.

Where there is strife, there is pride,

but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

Dishonest money dwindles away,

but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick,

but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

Whoever scorns instruction will pay for it,

but whoever respects a command is rewarded.

The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,

turning a person from the snares of death.

Good judgment wins favor,

but the way of the unfaithful leads to their destruction.

All who are prudent act with knowledge,

but fools expose their folly.

A wicked messenger falls into trouble,

but a trustworthy envoy brings healing.

Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame,

but whoever heeds correction is honored.

19

A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul,

but fools detest turning from evil.

20

Walk with the wise and become wise,

for a companion of fools suffers harm.

Trouble pursues the sinner,

but the righteous are rewarded with good things.

22

A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children,

but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.



23

An unplowed field produces food for the poor,

but injustice sweeps it away.

24

Whoever spares the rod hates their children,

but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.

25

The righteous eat to their hearts’ content,

but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry. (NIV)

Introduction:

I. Proverbs “13 is dominated by the theme of the need to accept

instructions and discipline.” (Smith)

II. “For the most part this section contains antithetical parallelism, i.e.,

the second half of the verse presents a deliberate contrast to the first

half.” (Smith)

III. Interestingly, Proverbs 13 contains no reference to God. (Smith)

A Father’s Teaching

Proverbs 13:1, A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a

A. “The first thirteen verses are cast in the form of the advice that

a father might give his son.” (Smith)

B. “A sensible son heeds what his father tells him,” Coffman

wrote.



1. Proverbs 22:6, Start children off on the way they

should go, and even when they are old they will not turn

from it. (NIV)

C. Because of a father’s discipline (education) his son becomes

wise. (Smith) (The Pulpit Commentary concurs.)

1. “The adult child publicly exhibits the instructions received

as a youth,” Bland wrote

2. The son owes his wisdom to his father’s instruction. (The

II. but a mocker (rebellious son) does not listen to rebuke.

A. “… a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.” (Coffman quoting

Moffett)

B. Smith defines a scoffer as one who mocks moral principles,

spiritual insights and filial duty.

1. Proverbs 1:22, “How long will you who are simple love

your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in

mockery and fools hate knowledge? (NIV)

2. Such a person is hopeless and rebuffs all attempts to

correct him. (Smith)

a. 1 Samuel 2:25, If one person sins against another,

God may mediate for the offender; but if anyone

sins against the LORD, who will intercede for

them?” His sons, however, did not listen to their

father’s rebuke, for it was the LORD’s will to put

Note: “Having set forth the value of discipline, Solomon identifies nine

areas in which the young need discipline,” Smith wrote.

A. Discipline respecting words is addressed in verses 2-3. (Smith)

1. Proverbs 12:14, From the fruit of their lips people are

filled with good things, and the work of their hands

brings them reward. (NIV)

2. Proverbs 18:20, From the fruit of their mouth a

person’s stomach is filled; with the harvest of their lips

they are satisfied. (NIV)

B. “Good people are rewarded for the good things they say,”

Coffman stated.



C. If a righteous man’s words are kind and designed to build up

others, he will enjoy a happy and peaceful existence because he

will gain the good will of his neighbors and the blessings of God,

Smith wrote.

1. “By his kindly speech and wise counsels he shall gain the

good will of his neighbors and the blessing of God,” The

Pulpit Commentary states.

II. but the unfaithful have a craving (soul) for violence.

A. Evil deceitful people always want to do wrong, are hungry for

violence. (See Coffman and the Easy to Read Version of the

Bible.)

1. Proverbs 1:31, they will eat the fruit of their ways and

be filled with the fruit of their schemes. (NIV)

B. “Treacherous men devise evil schemes to encompass the ruin of

others,” Smith wrote. “By hook or crook they will enhance their

own well being at the expense of others.”

1. “In the end the violence they plan for others will recoil

upon themselves,” Smith concluded.

2. “… sinners, especially the treacherous, bring on

themselves retribution: the injuries which they devise against

others recoil on their own heads.” (The Pulpit Commentary)

a. Proverbs 10:6, Blessings crown the head of the

righteous, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the

wicked. (NIV)



3. Such men have only one thing at heart, to bring harm to

their neighbors and to increase their wealth by any method

available, evil or not. (See The Pulpit Commentary.)

Proverbs 13:3, Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but

A. A person must not engage in rash talk, but weigh his words, be

tight-lipped.

B. “Self-control remains central to a life of wisdom,” Bland wrote.

C. Related Scriptures:

death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. (NIV)

2. Proverbs 21:23, Those who guard their mouths and

their tongues keep themselves from calamity. (NIV)

3. Psalm 39:1, I said, “I will watch my ways and keep my

tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth while in

the presence of the wicked.” (NIV)

4. James 1:26, Those who consider themselves religious

and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive

A. He that has no guard on his speech shall meet with evils; he

that is hasty with his lips shall bring terror upon himself. (See

B. Smith rightly observed that in some dictatorial societies, one

rash word against the government can bring immediate execution.

C. Clarke reminded us that God gave us two ears, two eyes and

one tongue suggesting we should hear and see twice as much as we

say!

1. Proverbs 10:4, Lazy hands make for poverty, but

diligent hands bring wealth. (NIV)



2. Proverbs 14:6, The mocker seeks wisdom and finds

none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning. (NIV)

3. Proverbs 20:4, Sluggards do not plow in season; so at

harvest time they look but find nothing. (NIV)

4. Proverbs 21:25, The craving of a sluggard will be the

death of him, because his hands refuse to work. (NIV)

C. Some lazy persons want nothing and have nothing while others

want many things, but aren’t willing to expend the effort to earn

1. “Laziness ultimately results in barrenness,” Bland wrote.

D. Clarke wrote, “They seek to enter in at the strait gate, but are

not able, because they do not strive.

1. The mind of the sluggard is focused on desires, wishes, not

on action to achieve these desires, wishes. (See The Pulpit

II. but the desires (souls) of the diligent, industrious are fully satisfied

(shall be abundantly gratified).

A. “The diligent soul is amply appeased; the soul of the diligent is

richly supplied.” (Coffman, Frankenberg, RSV)

whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. (NIV)

Proverbs 13:5, The righteous hate what is false, but the wicked

make themselves a stench and bring shame on themselves. (NIV)



I. The righteous hate what is false (lying, an untrue word), …

A. Discipline respecting honesty is addressed in verse 5. (Smith)

B. Here verbal lying and every other kind of deceit and guile are

addressed. (The Pulpit Commentary)

II. but the wicked bring shame and disgrace (to others and to himself).

A. An evil man’s talk is a shame and a disgrace, causes him to

stink (smell, cause a stench, stir up a foul odor) and makes

ashamed, acts shamefully and disgracefully. (See Coffman and

Tyndale Old Testament Commentary. See also Smith and Bland.)

1. The actions of the wicked emit a bad odor. (Bland)

2. Genesis 34:30, Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi,

“You have brought trouble on me by making me

obnoxious to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people

living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join

forces against me and attack me, I and my household will

be destroyed.” (NIV)

disgrace upon those who are associated with him.”

B. Coffman wrote, “It is simply amazing how the author of

Proverbs is able to say almost exactly the same thing in a hundred

different ways.”

C. “Righteousness is a safeguard against a person’s straying from

the right path of life,” Smith stated.

1. Righteousness provides protection for the person who

lives with integrity. (Bland)

2. “Those who are good and innocent in the walk of life are

preserved from evil, moral and material.” (The Pulpit

Commentary)

II. but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

A. Why partner with a thing (wickedness in any of its various

forms) that will surely destroy you?

1. Yet, people do this – continually!

2. What benefit, re-enforcement do people get from walking

in the way of wickedness?

B. “Wickedness destroys one who walks in sin.” (Bland)

1. Proverbs 11:3, 5-6, The integrity of the upright guides

them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. 5The righteousness of the blameless makes their paths

straight, but the wicked are brought down by their own

wickedness. The righteousness of the upright delivers

them, but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.

Proverbs 13:7, One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;

another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. (NIV)

I. One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;…

A. Discipline in lifestyle is addressed in verses 7-9. (Smith)

B. There are poor people who pretend to be rich. (Coffman)

1. Proverbs 12:9, Better to be a nobody and yet have a

servant than pretend to be somebody and have no food.

(NIV)

C. Some want to give the impression of being rich for social

reasons, Smith wrote.

D. Pretenders, feigning to be something they are not, either rich or

poor, are plentiful and are found everywhere in all societies.

E. Remember the rich fool who had this world’s wealth, but was

not rich toward God.

1. Luke 12:16-21, 33, And he told them this parable: “The

ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant

harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have

no place to store my crops.’ “Then he said, ‘This is what

I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones,

and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to

myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years.

Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ “But God said

to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be

demanded from you. Then who will get what you have

prepared for yourself?’ “This is how it will be with

whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich



toward God.” 33

Sell your possessions and give to the poor.

Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a

treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief

comes near and no moth destroys. (NIV)

II. another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.

A. “There are rich people who pretend they are poor.” (Coffman,

Peake)

1. Smith wrote, “Misers live as though they are poor although

they are wealthy and, in this way, protect themselves from

requests for assistance.”

2. “One cannot trust in appearances,” Smith and The Pulpit

Commentary concluded.

B. This proverbial pair cautions us to avoid judging another based

on appearance. (Bland)

1. Other examples are the following:

a. Proverbs 11:22, Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is

a beautiful woman who shows no discretion. (NIV)

b. Proverbs 31:30, Charm is deceptive, and beauty is

fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be

praised. (NIV)

c. Paul speaks in 2 Corinthians 6:10 of some who are

“poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet

possessing everything.”



d. A person can be poor in regard to worldly

possessions, but rich toward God.

Proverbs 13:8, A person’s riches may ransom their life, but the poor

cannot respond to threatening rebukes. (NIV)

A. “When a wealthy man is (sick) kidnapped, blackmailed or

threatened in some way, his wealth can save his life,” Coffman

wrote.

1. Exodus 21:22, 30, “If people are fighting and hit a

pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but

there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined

whatever the woman’s husband demands and the court

allows. 30

However, if payment is demanded, the owner

may redeem his life by the payment of whatever is

demanded. (NIV)

B. “There are advantages and disadvantages in wealth. One with

money can be exposed to robbery and extortion,” Coffman wrote

quoting George DeHoff.

1. Luke 16:9, I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends

for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be

welcomed into eternal dwellings. (NIV)

C. Bland wrote, “The value of wealth is relative. One translation

reads, ‘The rich can be sued for everything they have, but the poor

are free of such threats.’”



D. Those who are rich often have trouble with their wealth, in

getting it, in keeping it, and because of it, Clarke wrote.

II. but a poor man hears no threat (rebuke).

A. The poor man will not be threatened in any such manner as the

rich, Coffman wrote.

1. Job 3:18, Captives also enjoy their ease; they no longer

hear the slave driver’s shout. (NIV)

2. “The poor have nothing to lose, and no one can gain

anything by interfering with him,” The Pulpit Commentary

states.

B. The poor are not so apt to be the object of extortion or

blackmail, Coffman wrote quoting George DeHoff.

1. “A hundred men cannot rob one pauper,” The Pulpit

Commentary states.

C. “The poor have no financial resources. No one can threaten

them (financially). In that sense, the poor are better off than are

the rich.” (Bland)

D. “A rich man has to use his money to save his life, but no one

threatens a poor man.” (Good News Bible, Today’s English

Version via Bland)

I. The light of the righteous shines brightly,…



A. The light of the righteous shines brightly and permanently

indicating a healthy condition. (Bland)

1. Proverbs 4:18-19, The path of the righteous is like the

morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of

day. But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they

do not know what makes them stumble. (NIV)

2. Proverbs 31:18, She sees that her trading is profitable,

and her lamp does not go out at night. (NIV)

B. Light and lamp, Clarke wrote, signify posperity.

1. The righteous can expect a lasting family for generations

to come which reflects God’s glory.

a. 1 Kings 11:36, I will give one tribe to his son so

that David my servant may always have a lamp

before me in Jerusalem, the city where I chose to put

my Name. (NIV)

b. 1 Kings 15:4, Nevertheless, for David’s sake the

1. Proverbs 24:20, for the evildoer has no future hope,

and the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out. (NIV)

2. Proverbs 20:20, If someone curses their father or

mother, their lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness.

(NIV)

3. Job 18:5, “The lamp of a wicked man is snuffed out;

the flame of his fire stops burning. (NIV)

4. John 1:8, He himself was not the light; he came only as

a witness to the light. (NIV)

5. John 5:35, John was a lamp that burned and gave

light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. (NIV)

B. Smith wrote, “The lamp of the wicked is the false show of

wisdom or piety which may glimmer and deceive for a time, but is

soon seen for what it is and extinguished.

C. Clarke suggested the snuffing out of the lamp of the wicked

indicates the end of a person’s family, the end of his lineage.

D. A light was kept burning in all houses at night.

1. The snuffing out of a lamp was a very bad sign.

I. Pride only breeds quarrels,…

A. Discipline respecting quarrels is addressed in verse 6. (Smith)

B. Pride produces quarrels, trouble, contention.

C. Pride, haughtiness and arrogance kindle contentions while

reason contributes to conflict resolution. (See Smith)

1. Smith further wrote, “Pride however distorts judgment and

makes arbitration difficult.”

2. “Only in insolence will one give strife,” that is, the main

product produced by pride is quarreling. (Bland)

3. Clarke ventured the opinion that there never has been a

quarrel / contention, personal, national or otherwise, that did

not originate with pride or human ambition.

4. “One who is haughty and overbearing, or who is too

conceited to receive advice, is sure to quarrel with others,”

The Pulpit Commentary states.



II. but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

A. The well advised act wisely, and resolve conflicts.

B. The wise accept advice while the arrogant have contempt for the

opinions of others.

1. Proverbs 12:15, The way of fools seems right to them,

but the wise listen to advice. (NIV)

A. Discipline regarding wealth is here addressed. (Smith)

B. Wealth quickly obtained by fraud, illegitimate and dishonest

means is soon gone, dissipated.

1. “Easy come, easy go.”

a. Proverbs 20:21, The way of fools seems right to

them, but the wise listen to advice. (NIV)

b. Proverbs 21:5, The plans of the diligent lead to

profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. (NIV)

2. “Dishonest money” includes all illegal and unethical

means of acquiring financial gain.

3. Smith specified speculation and gambling as examples of

attempts to accumulate wealth hastily and without effort.



4. Get rich quick schemes are futile! “… and often involve

fraud.” (Bland)

5. Be wary of those who get rich quickly. (See Bland)

6. “Wealth that is not the result of honest industry and hard

labor is seldom permanent,” Clarke wrote.

II. but he who gathers money (by patient industry) little by little makes it

grow.

A. The honest laborer who engages over time in wise enterprise

finds true prosperity. (See Coffman)

B. “Patient industry, regular savings and legitimate investments

lead to (permanent) wealth,” Smith stated.

Note: Bland observed that many of the proverbs in verses 12-19 center

around instruction, commands and teachings of wise sages and parents.

A. “Discipline respecting disappointment” is addressed here.

(Smith)

B. Being unable to achieve goals in a timely manner as hoped

causes frustration, anxiety, depression, a sick heart,

disappointment.



C. “Delay in gratification pains the mind; the increase of the delay

prostrates and sickens the heart; and if delay sickens the heart,

ultimate disappointment kills it,” Clarke wrote.

II. but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

A. When a much desired goal is achieved, life is made better!

(Coffman)

1. Achievement of goals “comforts and invigorates,” Clarke

wrote.

B. Smith wrote, “Accomplishing a worthwhile goal invigorates and

heartens.”

1. Proverbs 3:18, She is a tree of life to those who take

hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.

2. A “tree of life” is, in Proverbs, synonymous to happiness

and fullness of life.

C. How happy will we who have long hoped for heaven be when

we first set our feet on the golden street and see the mansions Jesus

has prepared for us.

1. Romans 8:23, Not only so, but we ourselves, who have

the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait

eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of

our bodies. (NIV)

2. John 14:1-4, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You

believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has

many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you



that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I

go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take

you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You

know the way to the place where I am going.” (NIV)

life, and the one who is wise saves lives. (NIV)

Proverbs 13:13, Whoever scorns instruction will pay for it, but

A. “Discipline respecting God’s word is addressed here,” Smith

wrote.

1. Deuteronomy 30:14, No, the word is very near you; it is

in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.

B. Persons who do not live within the laws of God will certainly,

one way or another, pay a dreadful price for their disobedience.

1. Proverbs 11:31, If the righteous receive their due on

best of life), …

A. The last twelve verses of Proverbs 13 are described as the

teaching of the wise. (Smith)

B. Wise, godly teachings point the way to a more abundant life and

help people avoid many problems that otherwise would ensnare

them as they go through life. (See Smith)

1. Clarke translated this passage as, “The law is to the wise

man a fountain of life.”

a. Proverbs 10:11, If the righteous receive their due

on earth, how much more the ungodly and the

sinner! (NIV)

b. Psalm 36:9, For with you is the fountain of life; in
