Accepting Discipline

Text:

Proverbs 13:1-25,

1 A wise son heeds his father’s instruction,

but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.

2 From the fruit of their lips people enjoy good things,

but the unfaithful have an appetite for violence.

3 Those who guard their lips preserve their lives,

but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.

4 A sluggard’s appetite is never filled,

but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.

5 The righteous hate what is false,

but the wicked make themselves a stench

and bring shame on themselves.

6 Righteousness guards the person of integrity,

but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

7 One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;

another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.

8 A person’s riches may ransom their life,

but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes.

9 The light of the righteous shines brightly,

but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.

Where there is strife, there is pride,

but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

Dishonest money dwindles away,

but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.

but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

but whoever respects a command is rewarded.

turning a person from the snares of death.

Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame,

but whoever heeds correction is honored.

A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul,

but fools detest turning from evil.

Walk with the wise and become wise,

for a companion of fools suffers harm.

Trouble pursues the sinner,

but the righteous are rewarded with good things.

22

A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children,

but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.

An unplowed field produces food for the poor,

but injustice sweeps it away.

I. Proverbs “13 is dominated by the theme of the need to accept

instructions and discipline.” (Smith)

II. “For the most part this section contains antithetical parallelism, i.e.,

the second half of the verse presents a deliberate contrast to the first

a father might give his son.” (Smith)

B. “A sensible son heeds what his father tells him,” Coffman

1. Proverbs 22:6, Start children off on the way they

should go, and even when they are old they will not turn

areas in which the young need discipline,” Smith wrote.

C. If a righteous man’s words are kind and designed to build up

others, he will enjoy a happy and peaceful existence because he

will gain the good will of his neighbors and the blessings of God,

Smith wrote.

1. “By his kindly speech and wise counsels he shall gain the

good will of his neighbors and the blessing of God,” The

Pulpit Commentary states.

II. but the unfaithful have a craving (soul) for violence.

A. Evil deceitful people always want to do wrong, are hungry for

1. Proverbs 1:31, they will eat the fruit of their ways and

be filled with the fruit of their schemes. (NIV)

B. “Treacherous men devise evil schemes to encompass the ruin of

others,” Smith wrote. “By hook or crook they will enhance their

own well being at the expense of others.”

1. “In the end the violence they plan for others will recoil

upon themselves,” Smith concluded.

themselves retribution: the injuries which they devise against

A. A person must not engage in rash talk, but weigh his words, be

tight-lipped.

B. “Self-control remains central to a life of wisdom,” Bland wrote.

A. He that has no guard on his speech shall meet with evils; he

that is hasty with his lips shall bring terror upon himself. (See

mouth of a fool invites ruin. (NIV)

2. Proverbs 18:6, The lips of fools bring them strife, and

their mouths invite a beating. (NIV)

3. Proverbs 20:19, A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid

anyone who talks too much. (NIV)

B. Smith rightly observed that in some dictatorial societies, one

rash word against the government can bring immediate execution.

C. Clarke reminded us that God gave us two ears, two eyes and

one tongue suggesting we should hear and see twice as much as we

say!

A. Discipline respecting honesty is addressed in verse 5. (Smith)

B. Here verbal lying and every other kind of deceit and guile are

addressed. (The Pulpit Commentary)

II. but the wicked bring shame and disgrace (to others and to himself).

A. An evil man’s talk is a shame and a disgrace, causes him to

stink (smell, cause a stench, stir up a foul odor) and makes

ashamed, acts shamefully and disgracefully. (See Coffman and

Tyndale Old Testament Commentary. See also Smith and Bland.)

Proverbs is able to say almost exactly the same thing in a hundred

different ways.”

C. “Righteousness is a safeguard against a person’s straying from

the right path of life,” Smith stated.

1. Righteousness provides protection for the person who

lives with integrity. (Bland)

2. “Those who are good and innocent in the walk of life are

preserved from evil, moral and material.” (The Pulpit

Commentary)

II. but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

A. Why partner with a thing (wickedness in any of its various

forms) that will surely destroy you?

1. Yet, people do this – continually!

2. What benefit, re-enforcement do people get from walking

in the way of wickedness?

them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. 5The righteousness of the blameless makes their paths

straight, but the wicked are brought down by their own

Proverbs 13:7, One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;

another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. (NIV)

A. Discipline in lifestyle is addressed in verses 7-9. (Smith)

B. There are poor people who pretend to be rich. (Coffman)

1. Proverbs 12:9, Better to be a nobody and yet have a

servant than pretend to be somebody and have no food.

C. Some want to give the impression of being rich for social

reasons, Smith wrote.

D. Pretenders, feigning to be something they are not, either rich or

poor, are plentiful and are found everywhere in all societies.

E. Remember the rich fool who had this world’s wealth, but was

not rich toward God.

Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a

II. another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.

A. “There are rich people who pretend they are poor.” (Coffman,

Peake)

1. Smith wrote, “Misers live as though they are poor although

they are wealthy and, in this way, protect themselves from

requests for assistance.”

2. “One cannot trust in appearances,” Smith and The Pulpit

Commentary concluded.

B. This proverbial pair cautions us to avoid judging another based

on appearance. (Bland)

A. “When a wealthy man is (sick) kidnapped, blackmailed or

threatened in some way, his wealth can save his life,” Coffman

wrote.

1. Exodus 21:22, 30, “If people are fighting and hit a

pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but

there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined

whatever the woman’s husband demands and the court

allows. 30

However, if payment is demanded, the owner

may redeem his life by the payment of whatever is

demanded. (NIV)

B. “There are advantages and disadvantages in wealth. One with

money can be exposed to robbery and extortion,” Coffman wrote

quoting George DeHoff.

1. Luke 16:9, I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends

for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be

C. Bland wrote, “The value of wealth is relative. One translation

D. Those who are rich often have trouble with their wealth, in

getting it, in keeping it, and because of it, Clarke wrote.

II. but a poor man hears no threat (rebuke).

A. The poor man will not be threatened in any such manner as the

rich, Coffman wrote.

1. Job 3:18, Captives also enjoy their ease; they no longer

hear the slave driver’s shout. (NIV)

2. “The poor have nothing to lose, and no one can gain

anything by interfering with him,” The Pulpit Commentary

states.

B. The poor are not so apt to be the object of extortion or

blackmail, Coffman wrote quoting George DeHoff.

1. “A hundred men cannot rob one pauper,” The Pulpit

Commentary states.

C. “The poor have no financial resources. No one can threaten

them (financially). In that sense, the poor are better off than are

the rich.” (Bland)

D. “A rich man has to use his money to save his life, but no one

morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of

day. But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they

do not know what makes them stumble. (NIV)

2. Proverbs 31:18, She sees that her trading is profitable,

and her lamp does not go out at night. (NIV)

B. Light and lamp, Clarke wrote, signify posperity.

1. The righteous can expect a lasting family for generations

to come which reflects God’s glory.

B. Smith wrote, “The lamp of the wicked is the false show of

wisdom or piety which may glimmer and deceive for a time, but is

soon seen for what it is and extinguished.

C. Clarke suggested the snuffing out of the lamp of the wicked

indicates the end of a person’s family, the end of his lineage.

A. Discipline respecting quarrels is addressed in verse 6. (Smith)

B. Pride produces quarrels, trouble, contention.

C. Pride, haughtiness and arrogance kindle contentions while

reason contributes to conflict resolution. (See Smith)

1. Smith further wrote, “Pride however distorts judgment and

makes arbitration difficult.”

2. “Only in insolence will one give strife,” that is, the main

product produced by pride is quarreling. (Bland)

3. Clarke ventured the opinion that there never has been a

quarrel / contention, personal, national or otherwise, that did

not originate with pride or human ambition.

4. “One who is haughty and overbearing, or who is too

conceited to receive advice, is sure to quarrel with others,”
