Principal’s Report

Sara Davey - Academy Principal

Our annual Armistice Day ceremony has always been very important at Mounts Bay Academy and today every student and staff member, joined by war veterans Jack Tarr and Mack Holding, and Steve Francis, Secretary of the Ludgvan Royal British Legion, halted their normal daily activity to remember those who lost their lives and gave their service.

Year 11 History students who visited the WW1 battlefields and war graves at Ypres earlier in the semester shared their experiences before the two minutes silence. These were very individual, emotional and poignant.

Deputy Head Girl, Hannah James said, “Visiting Ypres and especially the huge cemeteries like Tyne Cot, has completely changed my perception of Remembrance Day. It used to be that it was something you would do because you were told to, and that you didn't quite understand what you were remembering. Yet now I am aware of why we remember - to remember the vast number of people that lost their lives. Visiting Ypres made the fatalities during the two World Wars so real, and now during that two minutes silence, I really have something to remember.”

Year 11 student, Horace Halling, once again bravely stepped up to play the Last Post during our two minute silence, no mean feat on such an emotionally charged day. He then played the Reveille to end our ceremony.

All Year 10 students at Mounts Bay were treated to an exclusive performance of Edward Rowe’s (AKA Kernow King’s) biographical comedy ‘Trevithick’ last week. The show, which stars Kernow King and Mary Woodvine, brings the life of Cornish inventor and mining engineer Richard Trevithick to the stage. ‘Trevithick’ was an engineering pioneer whose development of steam technology led to steam power being used on roads and rails.

Miss Osborne’s Year 10 Drama group were lucky enough to have a workshop with Kernow King before the performance.

Miss Osborne said, “The students were very enthusiastic. In small groups they were given a scene from the play ‘Trevithick’ to interpret and perform. The students recognised the scene they had been given when they watched the performance, and were able to see how well it worked on stage.” Isaac Thompson said, “It was a brilliant experience because the actors had a great range of accents and characters. It was very funny.”

Abby Leonard said, "My favourite part of the performance was when Mary (the actress) answered the phone from inside the steam engine."

At Mounts Bay Academy we have signed up for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s live Schools’ Broadcasts. The live screening of the first play, their acclaimed production of Hamlet, took place on Thursday 10th November. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to see this amazing production, in the comfort of the school hall, for free. The production was split into three sections, rather than the normal two, with student activities between each section and live Q&As with actors from the company. It also included a live introduction from the studio. Students were totally engaged with the play, which starred Paapa Essiedu as Hamlet. Joe Pengelly, Year 8, said, “It was a really gripping play. It was fast paced, lively and intriguing. They made it relevant by setting it in the 21st century. I am definitely up for watching other RSC productions.”

Mrs Marsden said, “The RSC Schools’ Broadcasts are a wonderful opportunity for students to experience the thrill of live theatre. One hundred and twenty four students from across Years 8-10 took the opportunity to see this production of ‘Hamlet’. We have signed up for future RSC Schools’ Broadcasts of ‘The Tempest’ and ‘King Lear’ early next year, which I am sure will prove just as popular.”

Hamlet Audience Response

Charlie Edwards, 8 Orange:" I liked how every scene was set up. Dancers would come on and drummers would play music. The dancers would go around the stage collecting props, then exit. Also, the costumes were very creative. Hamlet's costume, when he was acting mad, had lots of graffiti style artwork on it. I thought that was really cool. "“

”Ben Boardman, 8 Orange:"The production was well planned for a modern Shakespeare story. I liked it because it had a lot of action and a bit of comedy, even though it was a Tragedy. It was best when the story got to the climax."“

”Henry Piper, 8 Yellow: "I really enjoyed the production and each scene kept you interested because of the great acting."“

”Lucy Wragg: "I thought the performance was very well done as you didn't know what was going to happen next."“

”“ Milo Taylor, 8 Yellow:"Although I couldn't always understand what the characters were saying, I found it a very interesting story and the acting was brilliant."

”Grace Powley, 8 Yellow:" I found that the performance was gripping and that you were always on the edge of your seat waiting for the next thrilling part to commence."“

”Lauren Slater 8 Orange"I think Hamlet is quite violent and emotional. I like the fact that the play was very colourful, despite it being a sad story."“ ”

Florence Sibley, 8 Orange:"I enjoyed the dramatic scenes and the element of mystery and suspense."“ ”

As part of the REAL Projects curriculum, one of the projects students take part in is the Sustainability Project, answering the essential question, 'Where have we come from? Where are we going?', with the aim of developing regeneration ideas to improve our local area.

REAL Sustainability Project

We have been fortunate enough to connect with the local council themselves, who are currently researching and investigating potential projects in which to improve Penzance. They are going to be working with our Year 8 students initially, who carried out the project last year. This week we had our first meeting, which was truly inspiring and exciting. Hearing our students sharing their own ideas about future regeneration, that were taken seriously and valued, was an incredible experience for all. This link is going to continue as our new Year 7 students carry out the project later on in the academic year. It is an authentic audience that could make our students’ work more REAL than ever!

As it is week nine, it is time to share and appreciate all of the hard work taking place within the carousel subjects! Today the Art and Graphic Design classes took part in an extended critique and analysis of the work they have been doing over the last few weeks; accumulating in an enthusiastic exchange of ideas between our students. During the lesson the students spent time finishing, refining and presenting their final ideas, ready for the gallery walk to take place at the end of the lesson. The students were not only proud of the work they had produced, but were excited and inspired with further opportunities presented to them later on in the carousel. Well done Year 8- it has been a great Semester!

On Thursday 10th November, Mounts Bay’s High Performance Choir travelled to compete at Camborne Music Festival. There were many school choirs competing; both primary and secondary schools. Our choir was entered in the Senior School Intermediate section.

When we arrived at the venue, we went upstairs to a private hall to warm up and prepare for our performance. The songs we chose to perform were: ‘Steal Away’ (which is a song that the African Slaves sang in the fields whilst working), and ‘Don’t worry About Me’ by pop singer Frances.

Before the performance, we sat in the church to listen to the choirs in the class before us. Listening to them sing, we were nervous but also excited. Soon, it was our turn to perform!

The performance went well and we were confident whilst singing. We were very synchronised with our harmonies and we worked well as a choir. The adjudicator was very pleased and gave us great feedback with very little improvements needed. Our marks totalled as 88 out of 90 - we were very pleased with this. This really boosted our confidence as a group due to the fact that we have only been a choir since last March.

Once the results were mentioned, we were very happy to receive the ‘Overall Winning Choir Award’ in our class as well as the ‘Most Outstanding Performance Award by Youth Choir.’

We were pleased to bring home a win for the Academy and were awarded Da Vinci Awards from Mrs Davey. Due to our success we were proud to be given the honour of singing to the War Veterans who joined us for Remembrance Assemblies. We thanked them for taking the time to visit us on this important day and we had positive feedback from them.

The members of the choir are: Emily Rees, Kate Matthew, Arianna Caddy, Renae Caddy, Siena Hoadley, Emma Eddy, Alice Thacker, Senara Rendell, Alannah Mayo, Horace Halling, Jessica Lee, Ebony Maddock, Anya Burlton, and Jasmine Baragwanath.

Boys’ Karaoke Session

Karaoke Club runs in the Cube every Monday lunchtime, attracting around 100 students from all Year groups every week. The club is run by Ruby Dylan and Kate Matthew as the Leadership Project for their Silver Arts Award. There are seven spaces for singers which are usually fully signed up by first break! This week the club was a boys only singing session, giving all those students who are nervous to sign up, but always sing very loudly at the back, a chance to get up and show their stuff. It was hugely successful, featuring solo singers and groups from all Year groups. Lots of the boys have also recently joined our new boys’ choir and rugby choir, and it really showed in their performances. If you would like to sing at karaoke please head to the Cube at first break on a Monday to sign up.

On Friday 21st October a group of Mounts Bay Academy students went to Falmouth University to see Chameleon Dance Company's performance of Witness, which was nominated for the National Independent Dance Awards 2015.

The dance was choreographed by Kevin Edward Turner and tells an enriching story about his mental illness; bipolar disorder. The performance showed him at different stages of his recovery and it really emphasised how others reacted and dealt with their friend possessing such an invoking and incredibly difficult illness.

Kevin showed his story beautifully and allowed movement to present it in the most captivating way. It really was a melting pot of styles and had an important message of needing support during such a tough time. It was an insightful performance and I would definitely see it again.

Graphic Designer of the Week

This week Graphic Designer of the Week is awarded to Sam Pryke in 8 Blue. Sam has approached this semester with independence and creativity, producing a thoughtful and creative design and 3D model based on his healthy eating snack. His FNSY product, (fruits, nuts, seeds and yoghurt) has encapsulated all of the 'I Cans' set for the success criteria of this semester, and consequently the project has reached a GCSE level in terms of design and execution.

Sam has engaged with the task in a thoughtful and mature way, considering target audience and current trends in healthy eating and snack-food markets to plan and develop an innovative product. We are all very impressed with his outcome! Well done Sam!

MBA welcomed Martin Nixon of NIXON design in Hayle on Monday. Martin is a practising Graphic Designer and owner of the reputable design company in Hayle. He has built up his own successful design company over the last 20 years employing a talented team of 16 designers who develop projects ranging from rebranding local companies and hotels to working with larger national companies on logo designs, products, merchandise and advertising.

Martin joined MBA's Year 9 Design students for the afternoon and he gave a really informative presentation about the life of a Graphic designer with examples of 'live' work. He was really impressed with the creative design skills being developed in school and explained how studying Graphics can lead to a fulfilling career here in Cornwall. He described the importance of being really creative in the development of ideas and how teams work collaboratively to complete a successful client brief on time. It's fantastic to see how effectively we can cover our 'C's' just in Graphics alone: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity and Critical thinking.

"It was great to have feedback from Martin about my project and he gave me loads of new ideas to try out." - Jack, Year 9.

Lots of news in the Qube Records department in the last few weeks. On 19th October, Jamie Gibney released his debut EP, The Amora EP, under his OXTR moniker. To celebrate the launch he held a listening preview party, attended by a select few invited guests, who got to hear the EP before anyone else! Radio Cornwall’s David White, who is a great supporter of Qube Records and music at MBA, picked up the EP and played Bye Bye Baby, Jamie’s collaboration with Amber Symons, on the BBC Introducing show last weekend! On Wednesday evening, we recorded a very special live concert for Source FM. We were invited by Simon Nield to record a live performance of the entire Time Flies album when we were on his show back in September, and so Gold Arts Award students Ellie Sawbridge and Jenny Dash arranged the event for their leadership unit. The evening, which was hosted by Maisy-Sky Lumbers, featured two full play-throughs of the songs from the album, including the first ever live performances of “Around The World” from Renae and Arianna Caddy which drew huge applause from the supportive and enthusiastic audience! The show will now be cut to time and sent off, and will be broadcast in the coming weeks on Source FM. We will of course let you know as soon as we have a broadcast date!

On a dark, cold, wet and windy November night the Year 8 boys had their work cut out for them from the start.

The lashing rain at times and northerly wind hampered conditions throughout, making handling and running rugby difficult. Penryn adapted to the conditions more quickly and efficiently to coast to an early lead, despite valiant defence from players Danny Fyffe, Harvey Barker and the tackle of the match by Isaac Trevains felling a lad much much bigger than himself. Mounts Bay struggled to compete in defence against the big and well-drilled Penryn backs, but made good yards at times through Pengers and Ross Gilmore. Harvey Stone flashed a few moments of what we could provide when passes were put together, but unfortunately we found ourselves on the back foot a lot with little time to react.

There were plenty of positives moving forward and with another good training session on Monday the team will continue moving forward.

At the weekend Abby Jose competed in the English National Cross Country Relay Championships in Mansfield. Abby and her team competed in the Under 13s category, which was tough as they were young in comparison to the other competitors and will, in fact, be able to compete in this age group again next year. They were also up against 103 other teams racing in this age group from all over the country.

The Cornwall team came in at 7th place, with a PB time for Abby. The team are now looking forward to training hard for next year.

Surf Training in MoroccoOn Wednesday 26th October, Woody New, Huck New, Bonnie Whitlock, Tom Thompson, Thomas Reeves and I left Cornwall for Gatwick Airport on a journey to Mirleft, Morocco to take part in elite surf training with Global Boarders Surf Co.

It was an amazing experience and I really enjoyed meeting friendly locals, trying Moroccan food, learning a bit about their culture and sharing the waves with them. On the first couple of days we surfed at a beach break called Grande Pillage which had swells of 2-4 feet, but later in the week it got bigger and better and on the last couple of days of the trip we surfed a point break with swells of 6-8 feet. Overall the experience was a massive success, and one I will never forget.

9 Warm completed a fantastic bake sale for the victims of Hurricane Matthew, more specifically those affected in Haiti, last Friday during first and second break. Students raised over £61 that will be donated to a charity to be chosen during tutor time. It was a really great team effort and 9 Warm pulled together by baking, selling and setting up. The students really did themselves, our tutor group and Year group proud. As you can see Mr Cross wasn't shy and enjoyed plenty of what the students had to offer! Well done 9 Warm.
