JUST FOR US

This entire matter has only come to light in our generation specifically, and after having been revealed and publicized, it has become relevant to anyone who hears of it. As the Baal Shem Tov said, A Jew needs to derive a lesson and instruction in his divine service from everything that he sees and hears!85

CHASSIDUS FIRST

Due to the advantage of a persons own service and effort, the Chassidic Ushpizin come before those mentioned in the Zohar. For it is through the work of the Chassidic Ushpizin that a quality is added to the Ushpizin mentioned by the Zohar86 - they explain matters that are found in the Zohar in a manner that could be intellectually comprehended by the faculties of the mind the ChaBaD87.

Translated in the memory of

Yitzchok Yosef ben Yaakov Mordechai.

The editors of HaMaaseh Hu HaIkar seek dedicated individuals who would like to sponsor future editions of a CALL to ACTION.Please contact Levi at 347-268-3299. Thank you. ----------------------85. See Fifth Night of Sukkos 5749, footnote 20 Hisvaduyos p.159: Note the

unique merit that this generation has been given, that although one could question whether our is a deserving generation - to the extent that in order to emphasis the great wonder in a story that concerns the conduct of Chassidim, we tend to say so-and-so was a Chassid of the Alter Rebbe or such-and-such occurred with a Chassid of the Mittler Rebbe and so forth, [i.e. we indicate that they belonged to a previous generation in order to emphasize their superior standing] nevertheless, this entire matter has only come to light [See main text above for continuation].

86. See ibid. 5751: The entire concept of the Ushpizin was revealed in the Zohar, the inner aspect of the Torah. How much more regarding the Chassidic Ushpizin, who are leaders of the Chassidic teachings, and are the very ones who explain the concepts found in the Zohar itself, in a manner whereby these matters are understood with the intellectual faculties of Chabad [See next footnote]. Consequently, through them [i.e. the Chassidic Ushpizin] the entire concept of the Ushpizin that are mentioned in the Zohar is added to!

87. Chabad stands for Chochmah, Binah, and Daas wisdom, understanding and knowledge, the roles of which are explained in the beginning of Tanya Ed.

a CALL to ACTION2

ForewordWe are pleased to bring you this newly published edition of

a CALL to ACTION in anticipation of Simchas Beis Hashaevo, Shmini Atzeres, and Simchas Torah 5767. Translated from its Hebrew counterpart, HaMaaseh Hu HaIkar, this presentation is a collection of practical instruction from the Rebbes sichospertaining to the many customs and themes that express the holy joy and tasks that mark the climax of Tishrei.

HaMaaseh Hu HaIkar is a compilation of horaos culled from the Rebbes talks in the years 5748 to 5752 (1988-1992), from both edited and unedited sources (muga and bilti muga). Great effort has been extended to remain faithful to the Rebbes calculated and instructive nuance. This English translation is rendered by Rabbi Shais Taub, with revisions and additions byRabbi Yaakov Paley.

At this time, when Moshiachs arrival is imminent, the Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, has emphasized the primacy of action. We are now beginning to experience the era when we will fully appreciate the superiority of deed above scholarship. May it happen now, completely and speedily!

We take this opportunity to wish ala of our readers as well as the entire Jewish nation, a gmar chasimah tova, and a good year overflowing with only revealed, tangible goodness and blessing, a year that will be graced at its very outset with the true and complete Redemption!

COMPARING GUESTS

The details concerning the Ushpizin i.e. the relationship between the Zohars and the Chassidic Ushpizin82 and likewise the differences between them and so on, has been discussed numerous times over the years83 and has gone to print along with the addition of references a complete work. Undoubtedly, people recall these matters, but if they do not, then those who so wish could take a look at the printed material!84

----------------------them for the fitting length of time. True, we could find an excuse and reasons for this lack, one of which being that we have already spoken about at great length and in detail during former years, and in fact, those matters have already been printed. Consequently, it could be understood that there is no need to repeat these matters all over again, specifically as we currently find ourselves more than forty years [since the passing of the Previous Rebbe], whereupon each and every person has the required heart to understand, eyes to behold, and ears to hearken [i.e. to comprehend the matters in a proper and total manner] surely, there is no need to repeat matters of the past generation which have even been printed [Nevertheless, as the Rebbe said above, It is necessary to repeat their concepts in the light of our failure to dwell upon them for the fitting length of time.]

See also Fourth Night of Sukkos 5752 Sichos Kodesh p.130-131: which are relevant to this day, as has been printed many times, repeated profusely, and was even mentioned in the previous Sicha, and more than three times during previous days.

82. See the First Nights of Sukkos 5750, footnote 81 Hisvaduyos p.139: For the Chassidic Ushpizin come together with the Ushpizin that are mentioned in the Zohar. They are in fact the same, just as Chassidus is on the level of the Oral Torah compared to the Zohar, and the Torah was given along with its [revealed] explanation; the Written Torah was given together with the Oral Torah.

83. Publishers Note: From the year 5741 (1981) onward the Rebbe began giving addresses every night of Sukkos (before this he would only farbreng on particular nights), concerning the particular Ushpizin of that night, and concerning the necessity to increase and rejoice at the Simchas Beis Hashoevah. These matters have already been printing in Mayanei Hayeshuah.

Furthermore, beginning in 5741, the Rebbe began the practice of explaining, on each night of Sukkos, the connection between that days Chassidic Ushpiza and the corresponding Ushpiza mentioned in the Zohar. See Mayanei Hayeshuah at length. See also Sefer Haarochim Chabad, Vol.3, Ushpizin DSukkos 5.

84. See ibid. 5751: Including the examination of the books referenced in the footnotes, whereby the understanding of the matter is further increased and enriched, for, as our Sages have said, The words of Torah are poor [i.e. scant] in one location whilst rich [i.e. abundant] in another location.

See also Third Night of Sukkos 5752 Sichos Kodesh p.124: As have been discussed many times during the farbrengens of previous years, and have already been printed and utilized.

a CALL to ACTION 29

EVOKING MERITS

We should mention the Ushpizin by name instead of simply referring to their number. This can be compared to the specific mention of the merit of the Patriarchs by declaring The eastern horizon has lit up all the way to the city of Chevron!79, the name of the city being added in order to evoke the merit of the Patriarchs with whom Chevron is automatically associated.80

DISCUSS THE GUEST

Although it is not the Chabad custom (for whatever reason) to verbally mention and invite the Ushpizin, nevertheless, the Rebbes of Chabad often spoke about the Ushpizin. The Previous Rebbe in particular discussed the Ushpizin on numerous occasions, both those mentioned by the Zohar and also the Chassidic Ushpizin. Moreover, he instructed that his words be published and publicized.81

----------------------My bread, for My fire-offering On each day there is another Ushpiza who is the first, who comes at the head of all the Ushpizin. In other words, this differentiation is not merely in place i.e. whether a particular Ushpiza comes first, second, or third place. Rather, as a consequent of this differentiation, a change occurs in all of their matters - There can be no comparison between the state of the Ushpizinbetween the first night of Sukkos and the second night, etc. See there, footnote 14: For example: When a particular Ushpiza comes second place as opposed to his previously being first place, then even those matters that existed on a second level for him, has now been transformed into a third level, and so on.

79. The daily morning service in the Temple would begin when the eastern horizon had sufficiently lit up. The Temple watchmen would call out The eastern horizon has lit up all the way to the city of Chevron!

80. See Fifth Night of Sukkos 5749 Hisvaduyos p.159. See also Mayanei Hayeshuah - Hisvaduyos 5751 p.109-110: We are now mentioning the Ushpizin (in addition to fact that by doing so arouses the merits of our forefathers, as we find concerning the daily morning sacrifice, the tomid shel shachar that began the Temple services each morning, whereupon they would announce The eastern horizon has lit up all the way to the city of Chevron! in order to awaken the merit of the Patriarchs who are [interred] in Chevron.)

81. See Fourth Night of Sukkos 5748 Hisvaduyos p.223. See also Second Night of Sukkos 5752 Sichos Kodesh p.114: Therefore, it is now fitting to repeat once more (ibereiden) the concepts and qualities of the first day of Sukkos, and of the Ushpizin of the first day of Sukkos, as they are included in the quality of Yitzchak [to whom the current second day of Sukkos belongs]. They are: Avraham and the Baal Shem Tov. It is necessary to repeat their concepts in the light of our failure to dwell upon

a CALL to ACTION4

SukkosAnnouncing Gut Yom Tov!

IN TRIPLICATE

It is written in Yalkut Shimoni that three different verses in Torah mention the concept of simchah in relation to Sukkos. Therefore, we should also announce Good Yom Tov!1 three times three times also being a chazakah.2

STEADY CRESCENDO

When doing this, we should raise our voices louder and louder each time3 until, by the third time, we are not able to raise our voices any louder!4

COMPOSED OUTCRY

At the same time, the rejoicing and raised voices etc. should be done in an orderly manner neither wildness or shoving and the like as in all matters of holiness by which we serve Hashem.4

----------------------1. See Third Night of Sukkos 5748 Hisvaduyos p.200: [Editors Note: On the

Shabbos of Sukkos, one should also cry out Good Shabbos! in this same manner, recorded as follows in this sichah:] The Rebbe announced Good Shabbos! three times, the congregation repeating after him each time. See also First Night of Sukkos, In the Sukkah, 5750 - Hisvaduyos p.144, in which the Rebbe announced as follows, Good Shabbos, Good Yom Tov! Good Shabbos,Good Yom Tov! Good Shabbos, Good Yom Tov!

2. See First Night of Sukkos 5750 - Hisvaduyos p.142: Amongst the other announcements that will be presently announced yasher koach to the Gabbai is a fundamental one, namely, the announcement Gut Shabbos, Gut Yom Tov!. See also First Night of Sukkos 5752 - Sichos Kodesh p.110: [At the conclusion of the sichah] the Rebbe announced again A Good Yom Tov! A Good Yom Tov! A Good Yom Tov! three times. See First Night of Sukkos 5748 - Hisvaduyosp.171 and First Night of Sukkos 5749 - Hisvaduyos p.108 etc.

3. Compare this to the saying of Kol Nidre which the chazan also repeats three times, each time louder and louder. How much more so [on Yom Tov] when lifting our voice which is an expression of joy that each time should be louder than the one before!

4. See First Night of Sukkos 5748 - Hisvaduyos p.171: We might add that lifting the voice also lifts the persons very being out of the stance and status of the mundane and into the stance and status of Yom Tov.

a CALL to ACTION 5

IN THE SUKKAH

In addition to announcing Good Yom Tov! in the above manner while in shul, we should do so again upon entering the sukkah which is considered a new place even if the sukkah is connected to the shul itself.5

Hallel During Hakhel INTRODUCTION

The Every seventh year, the entire nation men, women and children - would assemble in the Bais HaMikdash on Sukkos, as commanded by the Torah. There, they heard the King read from the Torah and were inspired to fear Hashem. In the Hakhel year of 5748, the Rebbe made an urgent demand to utilize this momentous year for convening constant gatherings that arouse awe and fear of Hashem. Conveying the tremendous magnitude of Hakhel, the Rebbe made public knowledge of a certain personal practice he himself had undertaken expressly to promote the great urgency of Hakhel. Said the Rebbe, When the tumult over the Hakhel year began, I forced myself to adopt a unique practice in order that I, too, should be affected. This practice is one that runs counter to my spirit, my nature and my habit especially, as there is the concern that one not, Heaven forbid, disturb the intimate bond with one's Rebbe.6 Nevertheless, I altered the custom pertaining to holding the lulav and esrog during Hallel:

----------------------5. See First Night of Sukkos, In the Sukkah, 5750 - Hisvaduyos p.144: Therefore, I

am not going to wait and I will just make the announcement myself: Good Shabbos, Good Yom Tov! Good Shabbos, Good Yom Tov! Good Shabbos, Good Yom Tov! And in the meantime while they are off assembling a committee consisting of the entire world - man, woman and child - to decide if and how to make the announcement - well have all fulfilled our obligation with the previous announcement!

6. Editors Note: It was the custom of the Previous Rebbe to hold the lulav and esrogonly at those points in Hallel where they are actually shaken and not throughout the entire Hallel.

a CALL to ACTION28

SEEING THEM

The Previous would say which also indicates an instruction for subsequent generations that the visit by the Ushpizin occurs in a manner that enables a person to point to with his finger, declaring: The Baal Shem Tov sat right there, the Maggid over there, and the Alter Rebbe over there! and so on concerning the remaining Ushpizin right down until his own father, the Rebbe Rashab, whos place he [the Previous Rebbe] filled.77

ROTATING LEADERSHIP

Each of the fourteen Ushpizin visit every day of Sukkos. However, every day has its main Ushpiza who stands at the head whilst the remaining Ushpizin accompany him - On the first day of Sukkos: Avraham and the Baal Shem Tov, on the second day of Sukkos: Yitzchak and the Maggid, and so on.78

----------------------concept must likewise be represented by the Ushpizin: Basically, the Torah reading of Simchas Torah whereby we conclude the entire Torah, ends with before the eyes of all Israel. In other words, after having had the Ushpizinthroughout the seven days of Sukkos, and following the added advantage of permanent owners on Shmini Atzeres, all the above is then revealed in a manner of before the eyes of all Israel, on Simchas Torah!

77. See Third Night of Sukkos 5750 Hisvaduyos p.151. See also First Night of Sukkos 5752 Sichos Kodesh p.107: As is known, that this occurred in a manner whereby he would point with his finger and declare: The Baal Shem Tov sat here and the Magid sat there, and so on. The fact that he would say sat (hot gezetzen), in the past tense, was since he was recounting that which had already occurred. However, since we are currently holding by the first night of Sukkos, it is understood that the Ushpizin are actually here right now, in the present tense!

See also the night of Hashanah Rabah 5750 Hisvaduyos p.190; Fourth Night of Sukkos 5749 Hisvaduyos p.165; First Night of Sukkos 5749 Hisvaduyos p.103, and elsewhere.

78. See First Nights of Sukkos 5750 Hisvaduyos p.139. See also Night of Hashanah Rabah 5750- - Hisvaduyos p.190: Likewise regarding the Chassidic Ushpizin Footnote 8: Although that concerning them, it was never explained that they share the concept of [whereby all the other Ushpizin] accompany [the Ushpizawho is unique to that particular day], it is nevertheless simply logical that this order is likewise [applicable] regarding [the Chassidic Ushpizin].

See also Fifth Night of Sukkos 5749 Hisvaduyos p.158-159: Since the days of Sukkos are differentiated by their [variance] in sacrifices, they are likewise differentiated by their Ushpizin, the guests who come to a persons table, the table being compared to the altar upon which the sacrifices were offered, My sacrifice,

a CALL to ACTION6

Now, rather than holding the lulav and esrog just when they are shaken, I hold them throughout the entire Hallel.7

Our Sages have explained that the four species, lulav, esrog, hadassim and aravos, allude to four types of Jews. The coming together of these four species in a single mitzvah symbolizes the unity of all types of Jews as a single entity. This unity is precisely the idea of Hakhel. Therefore, in order to emphasize just how crucial is the concept of Hakhel, the custom had to be changed, for the very reason that it was so difficult to do and would thus arouse wonder in all those who see it.7

Chol Hamoed GUT MOED! [Immediately when Yom Tov ends] there should be an announcement of 'Good Moed!' and since I have not yet made havdallah, this announcement will be made by the gabbai."8

EXTENDED JOY

There are many who are careful to eat meat in addition to drinking wine as a sign of joy every day of Chol Hamoed, since the Biblical command to be joyful on Yom Tov applies equally to Chol Hamoed.9

TORAH AND CHASSIDUS

During Sukkos we should increase in Torah study, learning with even greater intensity and strength. This applies especially ----------------------7. See Fifth Night of Sukkos, 5748 - Hisvaduyos p.245. Editors Note: The Rebbe

repeated this practice at various times throughout the Sukkos of 5752 (1992), holding the lulav and esrog throughout the duration of the Hallel.

8. See Third Night of Sukkos 5750 - Hisvaduyos p.148. 9. See Night of Hoshanna Rabbah 5750 - Hisvaduyos p.192: The fulfillment of the

mitzvah to rejoice on Yom Tov (vsamachtah bchagechah you should rejoice on your festivals) is specifically via consuming the meat of the shlamim-sacrifice. Even in our times, however, when we lack the meat of the shlamim-sacrifice, the Alter Rebbe nevertheless rules that it is a mitzvah to eat meat on Yom Tov since it states rejoicing [in the Torah, regarding Yom Tov]. It is due to the above reason that there are many who are careful [See main text above for continuation].

a CALL to ACTION 27

EIGHTH USHPIZA Following the abovementioned, we also add an eighth Ushpiza, namely, the leader of our generation74 as opposed to Yosef Yitzchak75 through whom the influence of all the previous seven Ushpizin are gathered and internalized.76

----------------------74. See Mayanei Hayeshuah - Hisvaduyos 5751 p.112: The title leader of our

generation emphasizes his work and influence in his position as the leader of the Jewish people.

75. See Mayanei Hayeshuah - Hisvaduyos 5751 p.111: Which is connected to the Redemption in the following manner: Yosef as in the verse Hashem will add a second time, sending His Hand and gather the dispersed of Israel (Yishaya 11), and Yitzchak meaning laughter as in the verse all who hear me will laugh joyfully for me, which will reach a complete state in the future Redemption, as is written Then our mouths will be filled with laughter.

76. See Mayanei Hayeshuah - Hisvaduyos 5751 p.108-109: Which is also emphasized through the fact it was through him i.e. in accordance with his instructions, that the manuscripts of Chassidus composed by the Rebbes of Chabad were publicized and published, including the books of the Baal Shem Tov (Keser Shem Tov and Tzivoas Harivash) and the Maggid (Magid Devarav Lyakov which is also called Likutei Amarim), which were reprinted. See also the first nights of Sukkos 5750 Hisvaduyos p.139.

See also Night of Simchas Torah 5748 Hisvaduyos p.309-310: Just as there is an additional uniqueness to Shmini Atzeres over the prior seven days of Sukkos, it is understood that it is likewise regarding the Ushpizin: On Shmini Atzeres, they are not so much Ushpizin meaning guests, rather baalim owners! Basically, this means that in a similar and comparable manner to the differentiation between Sukkos and Shmini Atzeres, namely, that during Sukkos we go out into the Sukkah, a temporary dwelling, whereas on Shmini Atzeres we enter the house, a permanent dwelling, likewise, Sukkos carries the emphasis of guests, and the nature of a guest is to visit on a temporary basis, whereas on Shmini Atzeres we emphasis the concept of permanency not guests, but owners.

This very concept is underscored by both Shlomo Hamelech and the Leader of Our Generation:

Shlomo Hamelech He constructed the Beis Hamikdash, which [as opposed to the Mishkan] was not in a manner of I have walked in a Tent, a temporary dwelling, rather, a permanent dwelling.

The Previous Rebbe He was the actual director of the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah, wherein was implemented the innovation of studying and disseminating the wellsprings of Chassidus in a settled and permanent manner. [This innovation constituted] a permanent structure that will culminate in the complete victory of the Kingdom of the House of David over those who despise the footsteps of Your Mashiach, in the permanent manner [represented by the double affirmation:] Amen, Amen!

Now, seeing that Simchas Torah is the ninth day that continues directly from the seven days of Sukkos and Shmini Atzeres and indeed, on a higher level, this

5) The Tzemach Tzedek as opposed to Menachem Mendel.70

6) The Rebbe Maharash or as he is widely referred to, Lechatchiler Ariber71 as opposed to Shmuel.72

7) The Rebbe Rashab or Admur Nishmasei Eden as opposed to Shalom Dovber.73

----------------------68. See Mayanei Hayeshuah - Hisvaduyos 5751 p.110: This title, Hazaken (the

Elder) or Harishon (the First), emphasizes his uniqueness in founding the Toras Chassidus Chabad through his Tanya, to the extent that he became well known and is also called The Baal Hatanya (and the Shulchan Aruch).

69. See Mayanei Hayeshuah - Hisvaduyos 5751 p.111: Which emphasizes his connection to the leaders before and after himself, for being a middle [the meaning of Mittler], he includes both of them. This is also emphasized in his Chassidic teachings being in a broad and expansive manner, like the expanses of a brimming river.

70. See Mayanei Hayeshuah - Hisvaduyos 5751 p.111: Which emphasizes his connection to our righteous Moshiach who is called by both of these two names, Tzemach and Tzedek (as in Mashiach Tzidkeinu). This is due to his work that joined the teachings of Chassidus with the revealed aspects of the Torah as one, in great profusion (also quantitively), which emphasized the spreading of the wellsprings of Chassidus, through which Moshiach will arrive.

71. See Mayanei Hayeshuah - Hisvaduyos 5751 p.111: Which emphasizes his unique way as a leader of the Jewish people.

72. See Mayanei Hayeshuah - Hisvaduyos 5751 p.111: Which emphasizes his uniqueness in the manner of the one who is called by this same name [i.e. Shmuel Hanavi, the Prophet Shmuel], who was called Shmuel since I have lent him to Hashem; for all of the days that he shall live, I have lent him to Hashem (Shmuel I 1:28).

73. See Mayanei Hayeshuah - Hisvaduyos 5751 p.111: The description Nishmaso Eden [His soul is in Eden] is as a name, by which he is called when being directly addressed in person. Seemingly this sounds contradictory! However, what is meant is that, in accordance with the saying that he coined just prior to his passing, Ich gei in gan eden (himel), un di kesavim laz ich eich - I am going to Gan Eden (Heaven) and the manuscripts I am leaving behind, then, notwithstanding his ascent into Gan Eden, he is yet to be found down here which is why there is room to refer to him in the first person through studying his Chassidic texts.

See also Mayanei Hayeshuah - Hisvaduyos 5751 p.108, footnote 48: He pointed with his finger and declared: Here sat the Baal Shem Tovand here sat my father, master, teacher, and Rebbe, Der Tatte (Father).

a CALL to ACTION 7

to the inner dimensions of Torah, Chabad Chassidus, which should be studied with understanding and comprehension, with Chochmah, Binah and Daas.10

GUESTS HAVE PRIORITY

On each of the seven days of Sukkos, there must be a special increase in learning the Torah of the Chassidishe Ushpizah11 of that day.12

THE THIRD DAY

There should be an extra emphasis in learning both the revealed and inner aspects of Torah on the third day of Sukkos, because the Ushpizin of that day, Yaakov Avinu and the Alter Rebbe, both represent the idea of Torah [and its exoteric and esoteric aspects, respectively].13

THE FOURTH DAY

Being that Moshe Rabeinu is the Ushpizah for the fourth day of Sukkos, on this day we should learn some new concept in Torah the Torah of Moshe which we have never learned before (- this is something that every person can relate to!).14

----------------------10. See Mayanei Hayeshuah 5750 - Hisvaduyos p.107: According to what we have

11. Editors note: See below, Ushpizin, at length. In the Zohar it is related that on each night of Sukkos, spiritual guests visits the sukkah of every Jew. On each day, one of the guests is the leader and the others accompany him. They are: Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov, Moshe, Aharon, Yosef, David. In addition to the ushpizin noted in the Zohar, a corresponding delegation of Chasidishe Ushpizin visit each Sukkah. They are the leaders of Chassidus: The Baal Shem Tov, The Maggid, The Alter Rebbe, etc.

LULAV - A.S.A.P.! Since the halachah is that the mitzvah of lulav may be performed throughout the entire day, we should be even more careful to perform the mitzvah right away. It is the nature of a person, when he knows he has all day to finish a task, it is much more likely that he will forget to do it altogether!15

Simchas Beis HashoevahINTRODUCTION

Although every Yom Tov is accompanied by a Biblical injunction to rejoice and is one of the festivals of rejoicing, the Yom Tov of Sukkos is uniquely termed The Time of Our Rejoicing and is accompanied by no less than three commandments to rejoice and be exceedingly joyful! In Temple times, the Jews would prepare in advance by constructing a large balcony for the women, and arranging the Womens Courtyard for the grand celebrations that preceded the water-drawing ceremony on each night of Sukkos, from the second day onward. He who has not seen the joy of the Simchas Beis Hashoevah, has never seen joy in his life!, and It is a mitzvah to increase in this rejoicing! are a few of the exceptional statements of our Sages regarding the celebration. Nowadays too, although lacking the Temple, the water-drawing ceremony, and so on, we are nevertheless accustomed to holding Simchas Beis Hashoevah celebrations with great fanfare and boundless joy. The Rebbe devoted exceptional effort to promoting Simchas Beis Hashoevah celebrations.

Sukkah, in a corresponding manner. They are: The Baal Shem Tov, The Maggid, The Alter Rebbe, The Mittler Rebbe, The Tzemach Tzedek, The Rebbe Maharash, The Rebbe Rashab, and the Previous Rebbe.

BY THEIR TITLES

We do not mention the Chassidic Uspizin by their first names, the names they were given upon entering the Bris of Avraham Avinu, as we do regarding the Ushpizin mentioned in the Zohar. Rather, we refer to them by their unique titles that reflect on their positions as leaders of the Jewish people, and particularly, leaders of Chassidus.64

CORRECT TITLES

These are the names as we mention them:65

1) The Baal Shem Tov - as opposed to Yisrael.66

2) The Maggid or Maggid of Mezeritch - as opposed to Dovber.67

3) The Alter Rebbe or Admur Hazaken - as opposed to Shneur ----------------------64. See Mayanei Hayeshuah - Hisvaduyos 5751 p.110. 65. See Night of Simchas Torah 5748 Hisvaduyos p.313: If someone would wish to

number the Chassidic Ushpizin in relation to the other tzadikim, they are permitted to do so, as long as it is done based on the rules of the Torah and so on.

Together with the above, however, a person should know that as far as Halacha is concerned, the sequential evolvement of Toras Hachassidus has been established in the said order: The Baal Shem Tov, the Maggid, the Alter Rebbe, and the subsequent successors. - These are the seven Chassidic Ushpizin for the entire Jewish people! See there at length.

See also Fourth Night of Sukkos 5752 Sichos Kodesh p.131: The fourth Ushpiza from those mentioned by the Zohar, is Moshe Rabbeinu. And from the Chassidic Ushpizim, the Ushpiza of the fourth day is the fourth leader the Rebbe Maharash, whose conduct was in a manner of lchatchiler ariber [leaping over obstacles as if they didnt exist]. However, if you count the Baal Shem Tov and the Maggid too, then the third Ushpiza is the Alter Rebbe, hence, the fourth Ushpiza, that of today, is the Mittler Rebbe.
