NAME :ISTIANAHNPM :110060068TITLE :THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS ABILITY OF PAST TENSE AND THEIR ACHIEVEMENT IN WRITING RECOUNT

English is an international language which is widely spoken by people in most countries in the world. Because of the importance of it, nowadays English should be learned by the students from elementary school until university. They also have to master for basic language skills they are reading, listening, speaking and writing. They also have to master grammar, a lot of vocabularies and pronunciation.Grammar is important to be taught to the students. It is one of the language components that the students have to master. Writing is important skill. Generally writing uses formal language style. In learning formal language, grammar should be achieved well. Past tense is one of language features of writing recount text.Based on the statement above, the writer would like to find out the correlation between students ability in past tense and their achievement in writing recount text.The writer used correlational method in this study. The data were processed and analyzed according to these steps: taking the data, coding, scoring, tabulating using SPSS version 16 and taking the conclusion based on the statistic result. The result of this study shows that there is a very strong correlation between students ability in past tense and their achievement in writing recount.It can be seen from the result of statistical calculation which found tobserved (6.41) is higher than ttable (2.021) at level significance 5%. It means that there is correlation between students ability in past tense and their achievement in writing recount. In the other word we can say that the hypothesis is accepted. The result of robserved is 0.72. Referred to the table of coefficient value, the result interpreted as high or strong correlation. It means that there is strong correlation between students ability in past tense and their achievement in writing recount text.
