ABSTRACT

Zingiber Officinale or known as ginger is a hot spice from the root of Asian plant and it is light reddish-yellow. We choose ginger because it is widely used in Malaysia by Malay, Indian and Chinese. Nowadays, we can find a lot of products that are produced from ginger such as drinks, candy and cosmetic products. Ginger is purposely used to cure some diseases such as diabetes, rheumatism and as antibacterial agent.

The major active compound that is found in ginger is essential oil. Essential oil is the concentrated, hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compound from plant. Essential oil is also known as volatile, ethereal oils or aetherolea.

This project mainly focus to extract the essential oil and to identify the compound exist. Further work is to formulate and produce medicated cream based on this essential oil. The best method to extract the essential oil is by steaming distillation. Steam distillation is a special type of distillation for temperature sensitive material like natural aromatic compound.

From our literal view it has been reported that ginger contains essential oil and phenolic compound. The finding of our research supports the traditional usage of ginger as traditional medicine. We can conclude that the compound in the ginger is useful to our life and can be commercialized.
