The Army recognizes each April as Sexual Assault Awareness % ? !" the prevalence of sexual assault and sexual harassment within our communities, but the progress the Army continues to make in com-bating sexual assault and sexual harassment as well.

This year the Army’s SAAPM theme is “SHARP: Shaping a Cul-ture of Trust.” Trust is at the core of any relationship – subordinate to leader, supervisor to employee, or even peer to peer – and it is es-sential in establishing and maintaining a rapport of any professional and personal association. But what happens to the relationship when trust is violated? How and where do leaders begin to establish or co-workers; especially when addressing incidents of sexual harass-ment or sexual assault?

Walk-the-talk. Every service member and civilian is a leader and

must accept his individual responsibility in the prevention of sexual harassment and sexual assault. Trust can be built when leaders exer-cise and experience good judgement to include consistently display-ing appropriate and positive behaviors. Individuals experiencing or affected by sexual harassment or sexual assault may choose not to report incidents because an immediate breakdown of trust has oc-curred and there is no expectation that the offenses can or will be re-solved. Actively and openly discouraging inappropriate comments and behaviors potentially creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable reporting sexual harassment/sexual assault and sets the tone for creating a climate where individuals are treated with dignity and respect

Break down barriers. For every effort made to encourage com-plainants and victims to report sexual harassment and /or sexual as-sault offenses, there are still individuals unwilling to report due to barriers or perceptions in regards to reporting.

What is pint-sized, wears purple and is tough enough to meet the chal-lenges of a military upbringing? Mili-tary brats!

On April 18, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service at Fort Jackson will celebrate Purple Up Day, a worldwide recognition of the strength and sacri-fice of military children, by offering free treats to any child who wears purple to participating Exchange res-taurants.

“With frequent moves, parental deployments and an ever-changing peer group, being a military brat can be difficult,” said Kevin Lowans with Exchange Jackson Main Store. “The resiliency of military children amid such challenges is an inspiration, and the Fort Bliss Exchange salutes their service on Purple Up Day.”

Any child 18 years old or younger who wears purple is eligible to receive a free treat while supplies last. Treats vary by location and may come in the form of a side, fountain drink, des-sert or other item. Offer valid April 18 only.

Purple Up Day is held annually during Month of the Military Child, which recognizes the contributions of children to the armed forces com-munity. The color purple symbolizes the combined colors of all military branches: Army green, Navy blue, Marine red, Coast Guard blue and Air Force blue.

Throughout our career there will be times when we’ll be faced with leadership challenges. The way we cope with and overcome those challenges is a key testament to our resil-iency.

Leaders certainly are not expected to be without feelings, but it’s critical that their leadership development enables them to control their emotions so as not to panic or confuse those who serve under them. Showing a sense of calm is an important trait for all leaders to have no matter what exter-nal or internal stressors you may face.

Being resilient is to not only bounce back, but to thrive under challenging conditions. The overall ability to rapidly adapt and respond positively when faced with adversity is re-siliency.

Everyone possesses a unique set of inner resourc-es. These social competen-cies and cultural strategies permit us to not only sur-vive, but recover, or even thrive after stressful events. What we draw from a par-ticular experience allows us to enhance future subsequent functioning.

It’s likely you’ve heard it said, “The best way to judge the performance of a company’s customer service is how it handles problems.”

The same thing can be said for leaders. Our success often " !! >to persevere while remaining focused on our day-to-day re-sponsibilities and goals in spite of obstacles and challenges.

Leadership has many different facets. Most commonly + " Soldiers by providing, purpose, motivation and direction to coach them towards achieving a goal or accomplishing the mission.

At the event Galloway spoke about how leadership is important to the Army.

Good leaders, he said, possess what he |= competence, courage and caring. Maude embodied all those attributes, he said.

These build a strong reputation, he said, and the loss of reputation is very hard to get back.

Another facet of leadership he spoke of was the importance of being loyal to se-niors, peers and subordinates.

|{|*! -erally. Loyalty goes every single way. Peo-ple bad mouth their unit, bad mouth their leadership, bad mouth their leaders and bad mouth their subordinates … Do not let yourself fall into the trap of falling into that

Then she heard it. “Drill Sergeant! Drill Sergeant!” Not in the normal tone of ask-ing a question, or a trainee needing to ask permission. It was the call of someone in trouble, and several trainees were shout-ing. Shouting for help.

Ten drill sergeants all snapped to their feet – an MOS alphabet mix of 11Bs, 12B, 14P, 42As, 92G, a 68U and a 68W, combat medic – ready to help whatever the prob-lem. Quintanilla, or drill sergeant “Q,” as she is called, ran over to the group of train-ees and noticed one choking, losing color and foaming at the mouth.

Once the trainee had caught his breath, Quintanilla asked if he was okay. Still par-tially doubled over, the trainee nodded, sheepishly, and Quintanilla kept an eye on ! he would be all right.

Then it was back to lunch and on with training.

Drill sergeants defend the standards of the Army, the Army values, and their trainees, by transforming civilians into Soldiers through basic training, a life-changing event – and occasionally it is a life-saving event. Just ask the Charlie Company trainees.

ResiliencyContinued from Page 6

The Army Leadership Require-ments Model has three different at-tributes of what a leader should be, know and do.

Be resilient when faced with adversity and know that the best out-come will be a testament to how you responded to the problem.

Know that each experience we go through good or bad can teach us a positive lesson.

Be willing to try; if you fail you must try again and continue to !solving.

Resilient people have the ability to remain calm, acknowledge and evaluate things rationally. Adapting and surviving some of life’s most @ @away and that is the lesson that can be learned.

Each time you solve a problem we’ll continue to get better at the process. What matters the most is not necessary the “why” of what you’re dealing with, but the “how” you’re going to react with the situation.

By Leader Staff Reports

Suspicious packages can come in all shapes and sizes. A suspicious package is any backpack, bag, box or other item left unattended or that otherwise seems out of place. For instance a package you’re expecting from UPS may not raise suspicions, but an unexpected package, with or without markings, left on your door step or porch may be cause for alarm. One of the best defense against suspicious packages is awareness of your surroundings, know what is nor-mal for your surroundings. If you see something that does not look right, report it. Remember, “See something, say something.”

If you receive a suspicious package what should you do?

Report suspicious unattended packages, or a potential bomb threat to authorities immediately, fol-low instructions, and evacuate the area – Call 911.

Provide as much detail as possible to authori-ties.

Seek distance and cover – they are the best means to reduce the risk.

Do not approach or inspect suspicious items or unattended packages.

Do not congregate near the incident scene – it risk of secondary attacks.

What does a suspicious package look like?
