Dear Sir,

I am thankful that you have kindly allowedme a space in your esteemed column. I hope Ido this space justice with my writings. Philip“Brave” Davis, in my humble opinion, is theProgressive Liberal Party’s CLEAR CHOICEfor Deputy Leader at the upcoming conven-tion.

The party’s convention is slated for nextmonth and I don’t see anyone else in that par-ticular race who stands a chance to evenremotely nudge Brave. One thing I like aboutBrave is that he goes from success to successbut NEVER loses his humble characteristic. He is truly one of the smartest people that Iknow, but never arrogant or condescending.

Not only has Brave Davis proven himself tobe a genius in the legal system, having been alay Magistrate, a prosecutor and a most notedattorney who has won many “impossible”cases, but he has been a BRAVE defender ofthe PLP on too many occasions to mention. What comes to mind in this regard is wheneveryone ran for the hills after the 1992 land-slide victory of the Free National Movement,Brave Davis was the man right beside Sir

Lynden Pindling during the dreaded and mostembarrassing Commission of Inquiry – Bravewas there!

We in cat Island would like to see is Bravegiven a chance to straighten up this country’sforsaken and messy legal system. For the firsttime in decades we would actually get it right.

Most dear to me though, is the way thatBrave Davis treats HIS people from CatIsland, Rum Cay and San Salvador, a con-stituency he has successfully represented formany years. We family islanders love Braveand wish him all the best in his politicalendeavours. It is our hope he is elected thenext Deputy Leader.

Brave is everything to us – our pro bonoattorney, our friend, our advisor, our sibling, our representative and most importantly ourDEFENDER. So PLPs rise up and take astand!! Be Brave! Vote for a humble man, aman of excellence, a smart man, a man whoknows what is good for the PLP and for thiscountry. Vote for Philip “Brave” Davis asDeputy Leader of the PLP.

Yours etcS D. Rolle

We Need A 'Brave' Man AsDeputy Leader Of The PLP

Dear Sir,

I would be most negligent if I did not showmy humble gratitude to you for permitting methe opportunity to express my thoughts in printvia your journal.

Having established that, I will say that Iwatch with much a baited breath as the “race”for leader and deputy leader of the very his-toric Progressive Liberal Party moves on. Iexpect it to heat up around the first week inOctober and with that in mind I decided to getmy two cents in before the over-heated debatescommence.

My dear friend and colleague, Philip“Brave” Davis has tossed his proverbial hat inthe ring declaring that he is ready to join theleadership team of the PLP via the position ofDeputy Leader. I cannot think of a more suit-able person to join such a team.

Not only do I think Philip “Brave” Davis isperfect for the leadership team of the PLP butI think he is also very good for this country ingeneral. It is definitely no secret that our judi-cial system is in shambles and in dire need ofa team, headed by a well-rounded legallysound individual who will repair it.

Brave, as he is affectionately called, is anaccomplished attorney, parliamentarian, phi-lanthropist and family man. He is the Senior

Partner in one of the leading law firms in TheBahamas, Davis & Co., and is considered oneof the leading advocates in the country.Although short in stature, he stands tallamongst us in the legal field, having acquiredthe tremendous experience that he has over theyears.

In recent times I’ve seen Brave referred toas a “legal genius” and to this I can attesthands down. I have seen him come through themost difficult cases victorious and with hum-ble confidence. I don’t think any of us in thisadmirable legal field would disagree when Isay that, if given the opportunity Brave can putour legal system in order and in so doing, bring a halt to the high criminal activity in thiscountry.

In all, I know Brave is the better choice forDeputy Leader of the Progressive LiberalParty and I know he will be successful in thisregard at his party’s upcoming convention. What I would like to see is this – Should thePLP be victorious in the 2012 GeneralElections, Philip “Brave” Davis appointedMinister of National Security or Minister ofLegal Affairs. He is truly a man for all seasons.

Yours etc,Legal Eagle

“Brave” Is Perfect For PLP Leadership

On October 2, 2009, the PLP lostanother great pillar, which has helped tocraft and shape the modern Bahamaswhich we enjoy today. Sir Clement T.Maynard was a giant of a man stature andcommitment to the people of this nation;he commanded the attention of all. He wasa freedom fighter not afraid to fight for thecivil liberties of all Bahamians, he is a truelegend.

It is in this vein that the next deputyleader of the Progressive Liberal Party hasremembered him. ‘Brave’ Davis described

Sir Clement “As a giant in our party andour country who served his country well.He was a giant among men and in the tra-dition of the PLP he did much to advancethe rights of the average Bahamian.”

Mr. Davis further commented that “I amgrateful to Sir Clement for his support andcounsel during my frontline politicalcareer.”

So with this let us during this conven-tion remember the life and the legacy of agreat Bahamian, a PLP and a statesman.May his soul rest in peace!

Brave Davis was born on June 7th, 1951into a loving PLP family. The young Brave andhis older brother Alvin went to Cat Island tolive with their grandparents. Unfortunately, hewas too young to go to school and too small togo into the ‘field’. Growing up on the islandand not being allowed to attend school due tohis size, served to drive Brave’s desire to learn.Sitting in the gallery at the back of the class inCat Island, Brave was introduced to his oppor-tunity for advancement; Education.

After living in Cat Island for some timeBrave returned to his family and their modesthome on Lexington Avenue, Wulff Road. Thetwo-room wooden structure; with out houseaccommodations was considered an upgradeover the Cat Island homestead, as there was nosuch facility.

Struggling to make ends meet was nothingnew, as the Davis family was driven to successby a committed mother and father. Whilemeals usually consisted of flour pap and gruel, they were made with love and always took careof the hunger. The family raised chickens, hogs and goats. Brave even had a pet rooster,Jim that eventually ended up on the dinnertable as well. Times were tough; but Brave’sfather, Mr. Davis never gave up on trying toprovide a better standard of living for his fam-ily, even building new rooms onto the existingtwo room structure.

Education was non-negotiable in the Davishousehold, as Brave senior insisted on all of

the children receiving an education. Instilledwith the strong view of education young Bravebecame educationally focused, even to thepoint of taking-on a number of odd jobs to sup-port his schooling. Young Brave worked as agas station attendant, grocery store packing

boy; mechanic helper; carpenter and construc-tion helper. Even though he was a gifted learn-er in many of these trades he never gave up onhigher education.

Throughout his campaign to become thenext deputy leader of the PLP, Brave Davis hasbeen supported by his children. At a breakfastfor stalwart councillors at the Sheraton Hotelon October 2, the eldest of Brave’s six childrengave an intimate glimpse into growing-up withBrave Davis as a father.

Philice Davis-Albury explained to dele-gates that, “Growing up with a man for a fatherthat believes in the philosophy of this Party, tohis very core, has instilled in all of us the val-ues that make this Party great. We all sawfirsthand and understood at a very early agewhat the PLP represents and what it achieved. Those PLP values that require us to place oth-ers before ourselves; that demand that weshow compassion for the less fortunate and tolove your country with all of your heart, werelessons that were taught everyday.”

Davis-Albury also spoke about Brave’skindness stating, “Daddy to me is the embodi-ment of what it means to be a PLP. He wasalways willing to help a constituent, friend, fellow PLP and even FNM. I have never seenDaddy turn anyone away and have alwaysbeen inspired by how much he cares and howmuch he is willing to give of himself.”

It was years ago when Philip Brave Davisstarted his journey towards a life of leadershipthrough service. Having endured a challengingchildhood, he demonstrated that there is nosubstitute for hard work and determination. His story is like so many of our own collectivestories; it is made possible, because of the sac-rifice and focus of our families to ensure thatwe are able to go farther and do more than theywere able to. Knowing this; we have all cometo a place where we know it is time to startmoving the Bahamas in a new direction.

As a nation and a people, we have alwaysknown that we can advance further; that wasthe view that Sir Lynden always had, that wewould attain heights unseen and explore placesunknown. Making this change happen willrequire all to be innovative, strong but mostimportantly, “BRAVE.”

Brave has pointed out on numerous occa-sions, “I tell my story because personal successstories like mines should be far more commonhere in the Bahamas.”

Brave has aspired to do more, work harder, push stronger to create opportunities for allBahamians. He has been given a unique per-spective to the needs of the Bahamian peopleas the representative of Cat Island, Rum Cayand San Salvador.

It has provided a vantage point that hasallowed Brave the opportunity to see the coun-try from both sides of the spectrum. While hewould say that Cat Island is his home; theentire country is his heart. He has always stat-ed, “three non-consecutive terms in the House

of Assembly representing my hometown, hasbeen one of my greatest privileges.”

Davis’ vision is to take the Bahamas in anew direction - one filled with potential andopportunity. He has always asked the question:“What are we doing TODAY to ensure we do,in fact, have more personal success storiesTOMORROW?”

In announcing his candidacy for deputyleader of the PLP he made clear his dissatisfac-tion with the direction of the country, “Likemany other Bahamians I am absolutely com-mitted to working with you to change TheBahamas.”

A BRAVE NEW DIRECTION

Candidate for deputy leadership of the Progressive LiberalParty, Philip “Brave” Davis, travelled to Long Island to meetwith Stalwart Councillors and PLP supporters one-on-one, as thecountdown to the 2009 PLP Convention heats up this October21st.

Taking his message and rallying supporters across the countryto, “Be Brave…Change The Bahamas”, Davis continued his trekacross the island with his latest stop in Deadman’s Cay on Fridaypast. He touched and greeted Party faithful in the southern andnorthern settlements on the island.

Humbled by his support, Davis was visibly moved by the can-did expressions of neglect in the communities.

Davis explained that politics in The Bahamas is broken, “We[politicians] have been too busy rowing amongst ourselves andtoo focused on seeing our picture in the paper. We have tochange the way we do things; our people are suffering for it”.

Buoyed by the warm reception that his call to transformBahamian politics received, Davis departed from Stella Maris.

Davis continues moving around the country as he stops to lis-ten to the concerns and ideas of residents around The Bahamas.

On Sunday the 20th Davis travelled to Cat Island to join sup-porters in a church service held in his honour, where prayers andwords of encouragement were rendered in support of the candi-date ahead of the upcoming Convention.

Davis spoke candidly about his personal story, stating, “My grandfather was a farmer that couldnot read or write, that worked hard to provide a better life for his children. My father could onlygo to school to the age of 13 as this was the furthest that All-Age-Schools went in those days. Mydad then worked hard, as a jockey, and fireman, trying as best he could to provide a better life, once filled with more opportunities for my brothers and sister and I. Now I, as a father want noth-ing more than to see my children have more opportunities than I did; this is the story of the PLP!We need to get back to basics man! We are not in this thing for ourselves; this fight is for a bet-ter country for our children and their children!”

Brave Davis has always been a loyal PLP.He has never waivered in his passion and com-mitment to the philosophy of the ProgressiveLiberal Party and it is with this passion andcommitment that he has launched his campaign“Be Brave: Change the Bahamas”.

Brave followed in his father’s footsteps asfar as involvment in the PLP. He served three(3) terms as a member of Parliament and hasalways been seen as one of the persons that theParty looked to for support.

He is loyal to his colleagues whether it wasreprsenting them in election court, offeringthem advice or just being that shoulder to leanon and a listenning ear. In fact as a youngLawyer

“Brave” was a member of the legal teamrepresenting Sir Lynden at the Commission ofInquiry and has represented the party in elec-tion court since 1977. He has served on a num-ber of committees including the Ways andMeans Committee.

Loyalty is an important characteristic ofbeing a good Leader. Brave is a man whompeople have felt confident to rely on variousocassions and has never been one to underminethe Leadership of the party in pursuit of pro-moting his own agenda. His loyalty and sup-port has been unquestionable.

Brave Davis is PLP through and throughand has put party before self.

On Sunday, hundreds of Cat Islanders gath-ered at the Restoration Baptist Church in aservice of prayer and thanksgiving for theirMember of Parliament and ProgressiveLiberal Party Deputy Leader hopeful PhilipBrave Davis. “I often go to lie down and she has alreadydialled the number with the phone to my ear.

She makes sure that I never falter in my serv-ice. I thank God for my wife!”

This is a time in our country whereBahamians of all walks of life have a burningdesire for change. They are desirous of aBahamas that is filled with opportunities for allno matter race, creed or ethnicity. A countrythat is free of crime. A country where empow-erment is created through education. ABahamas where healthcare is accessible to all.A Bahamas where every tear is wiped awayfrom every eye. The people of the Bahamasexpect this from the great Progressive LiberalParty. Mr. Davis once said “It is up to theProgressive Liberal Party to once again answerthe call of change in this country, just as we didin 1967.”

All over the Bahamas the cry is the sameand that is for a better Bahamas. Mr. Davis stat-ed that, “Ever since I launched my candidacy, with my visits to several of our family islandthis need for a better Bahamas has never been

so clear to me, and this is why I am ever sodetermined to be the next Deputy Leader of thePLP. One of my goals as deputy leader is torestore and unify our great party to our glorydays, and galvanize our party towards becom-ing the next government of the Bahamas.”

Mr. Davis has always been brave in the exe-cution of his civic duties. Whether it is somewrong or injustice in our society he stands up,even in the face of adversity for change and therights of our people. What comes to mind hereis how Mr. Davis was willing to be brave andstand up in the House of Assembly, speak outon the injustices experienced by some of hisconstitutes in Cat Island. Davis called out theindividuals who he felt had aquired the land.

Mr. Philip “Brave” Davis believes in changeand has often stated, “Politicians like to say yesto everything. We need a leader who is braveenough to say No – no to criminals, no to cor-ruption, and no to politicians who put them-selves before the people.” Mr. Davis is brave,he is not afraid to stand up against the wrongsof our society. He is not afraid to change theway we currently do business in our Party andour country. Philip Davis will make a real dif-ference by being a leader that gets the job donefor the betterment of Bahamians.

Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador MP Philip‘Brave’ Davis visited North Bimini on September 28th and29th in which he entertained private meetings with PartyStalwarts advising them of his plans for the Party.

While on Bimini, the candidate also engaged a numberof young people and youth groups as he made his trekacross the community, as a means of garnering their viewson matters of national interest and offer his own vision fortheir input. “The greatest challenge we (the PLP) have is theinvolvement of more young people” he said. Turning to isown campaign Brave noted “That is why I recruited youngpeople to work in my campaign. The people running mycampaign are young –this is the direction where we as aParty must go.”

Listening to the concerns of residents on the level ofcrime, Davis responded by outlining his plans to strengthenthe administration of the judiciary. This effort he added, willreduce the time for cases to be heard and to intervene in thelives of at-risk youth.

Residents on the island were also keen to express theirconcerns about the destruction of the mangroves on thatisland as a result of a major development. The PLP DeputyLeader hopeful assured of his plans to follow-up the envi-ronmental concerns of Biminites with the B.E.S.T.Commission and other such agencies.

Under the theme, Be Brave: Change The Bahamas,Philip “Brave” Davis launched his platform to modernizethe PLP so that so that it can Change The Bahamas.

Davis, over the course of his campaign, has establishedhimself as the catalyst for change in which he has identifiedfive objectives for change.

1) Strengthen and Unify the Progressive Liberal Party2) Increase the participation of women and youth in lead-

ership positions3) Ensure that the Party remains relevant to a dynamic

electorate4) Ensure that the party properly communicates to the

Bahamian people5) Modernize the Party’s internal infrastructure to a 21st.Davis further explained, “We must ensure that our con-

versation with the Bahamian people is not simply a celebra-tion of our history but we must use our history to developand communicate a roadmap of policies and programs thatassists young people in realizing their hopes and dreams.”

Further, Mr. Davis has and continues to prove that hebelieves that these are values that our Party must uphold andhas lived his life as such that it exemplifies these same val-

ues and beliefs. Davis explained, “We must become more united and

more cohesive in the way we operate and in the way we treateach other. We must go back to the days when we locked-arms one with the other, where together we were an unmov-able force.”

As a result Mr. Davis expounded, “This is why I havemade a conscious decision to compose my campaign teamof a mix of young men and women, stalwarts and seasonedPLPs.

“This is the change our party needs and this is the PLPour country desires so, let us - Be Brave: And change TheBahamas.”

Residents of Mangrove Cay, South Andros challengedonce again to BE BRAVE and take a stand to CHANGETHE BAHAMAS. Taking his campaign swing toMangrove Cay in South Andros front-runner for theDeputy Leadership of the PLP Philip Brave Davistouched down in the community on Tuesday night.

Embraced by scores of enthusiastic Androsians on hisarrival, the Member of Parliament for Cat Island, RumCay and San Salvador implored them to remember thatthey were the BRAVE change makers under formerPrime Minister and PLP Leader Sir Lynden Pindling andthey can do it again.

The man labelled by Bahamians as the ‘defender ofthe people’, Davis made the call for residents to join himin his growing movement of change for the country.“Today this country needs the PLP like never before. InNassau every time you look in the newspaper you readabout someone getting killed, we had six murders justlast week,” Davis said. “We have a government that caresmore about paving roads than it does about sending ourchildren to college; a government that cares more aboutscoring political points than about moving this countryforward,” he said.

Tackling the problems head-on, while offering solu-tions to problems facing the country, Davis fired-up hisaudience as he outlined his vision for the country. “Thisis the time when we place the University of the Bahamashere in Andros! This is the time when we focus more oncreating Bahamian business owners. This is the time foryour government to believe in you.”

Education is the key to success and in orderfor us to have an efficient and productive soci-ety we must place more value on providingbetter quality education and more opportunityto those seeking higher education. One suchprogram that was established to assist thoseindividuals was the Education Loan GuaranteeProgram. This program had allowed hundredsif not thousands of Bahamians youth whocould not under normal circumstances obtain atertiary education the chance to do so. But justbefore schools were to open the governmentsuspended this program, how unfair? Does thegovernment value the importance of educationand the role it plays in the development of ourcountry?

This has bothered the next Deputy Leader ofthe PLP, Mr. Philip “Brave” Davis so muchthat he has verbally expressed his disagreementin how and why it has been done during a pressconference held to address this matter. Mr.Davis stated “The Government has turned ablind eye and deaf ear to the crushing blow thissuspension has delivered to hundreds of stu-dents and families in our country, I have beenoverwhelmed with phone calls, e-mails and

visits from parents and students who have beenseverely and adversely affected as a result. Iwant to be clear about something; these are stu-dents that come from PLP and FNM homes.Their pain and frustration are real and theiranguish and voices must be heard in the inter-est of the development of our country.”

Mr. Davis also during his press conferencegave several solutions to the government. “Iimplore the Prime Minister with a stroke of hispen to demonstrate his confidence in our youngpeople by increasing the amount of theGovernment guarantee. The EducationGuarantee Fund Act places no ceiling on theamount that the Government is permitted to

guarantee. A Government serious about itsyoung people would prioritize its spending andbudget to ensure that the hundreds of youngpersons affected receive the funding necessaryto pursue their studies. Indeed, these students, our people, must rank higher than many of lesscritical areas where the Government continuesto squander the people’s money.”

Mr. Davis also commented on the fact thatthe government should revisit their positionand implement a proper monitoring system, thesolution to which will be greater accountabili-ty as suspending the program is not the solu-tion. Davis explained that the long-term solu-tion is to “1. Without delay the Government

ought to publish the names of persons whohave failed to repay their loans and to bringcivil proceedings where necessary regardlessof whom the recipient is; his or her politicalaffiliation or family relations, 2. More strin-gent controls and increased public reportingrequirements and regular audits ought to beinstituted to ensure that never again shouldinnocent students to be left to suffer at theeleventh hour and that alternative provisionscan be put in place in sufficient time to ensurethat Bahamian students continue to benefitfrom a world-class education the innocentshould not suffer for the guilty, and 3. As alsosuggested in the International Monetary FundBahamas report 2002 and as expressed byColumnist Nicki Kelly this past week, veryclear stringent and well publicized eligibilitycriteria ought to be put in place to ensure thatthe fund is not subject to political abuse in thefuture.”

To date, the FNM government has notaddressed this problem. It is clear that TheBahamas must change course.

“We must ensure that our conversation withthe Bahamian people is not simply a celebra-tion of our history. We must use our history todevelop and communicate a road may of poli-cies and programmes that assists them in real-
