No More Books to shelve
The first step:Teach 2nd and 3rd graders how to
shelve their Easy and Fiction books.
2nd
Demonstrate the correct and incorrect way to place a book
on the shelf.
3rdMark two book trucks with the
Easy and Fiction letters that match the letters on the
shelves.
Red for Fiction
Blue for Easy
Red for Fiction
Blue for Easy
4th Make 3 X 5 cards (two
different color sets, one for each team) to
represent the book spine labels
5th Demonstrate how to match up the
spine label with the correct letter on the shelf.
E for Easy goes on the Blue Letter Shelves
And FIC for Fiction goes over the red letter shelves.
6th
Divide the students into 2 teams. The students will walk a relay race placing
Easy and Fiction (3X5 cards) spine labels over the proper letter on the
cart.
Divide the students into 2 teams. The students will walk a relay race placing
Easy and Fiction spine labels in the proper place
on the cart.
7th
When I call “time” have a volunteer or teacher help you
count the correct and incorrect spine
labels cards.
8th
I then review the incorrect cards with all of
the students. To determine the winning team, award 1 point for
each correct answer. Deduct 2 points for each
incorrect answer.
8th
9th Declare the winner and discuss how the game is like shelving books. Explain that they are expected to shelve their Easy and Fiction books
after their books are checked
in.
10th
As I check in the library books for 2nd and 3rd
grade, I have the students place their NF books on
the book truck.
11th
In order to get these NF books out, I have the 4th-6th grade students pick up
3 extra books and put them away.
Teaching 4th through 6th graders how to put away
(not shelve) their non-fiction books.
2nd
Each student must place their NF books in the corresponding blue numbered basket so that a “student library volunteer”
can shelve them
correctly.
4th
Prepare the students to apply what they have
learned. Use two different colored sets of
card with Non-fiction numbers on them to
represent the NF spine labels.
5th
Students will walk a relay race placing the correct 3X5 card in
the correct non-fiction
basket.
Use 3X5 cards to represent spine labels. Students will play
in teams placing the correct 3X5 card in the correct non-
fiction blue basket
6th
Count the correct answer cards for each team and award
one point each. Deduct two points for each card placed in
the incorrect basket.
7th
Go over the incorrect spine label answers with
the class. Declare
the winning team.
8th
Explain to the students that they are expected to place
their NF books in the proper NF baskets from now on, but
only after the books have been
checked in.
9th And finally, let all
students know that you can tell who places books in the wrong place. The
sooner you start checking for incorrectly placed
books, the sooner they will believe you.
Who placed this book in the wrong place?
Check Easy and Fiction shelves daily for books
that are shelved incorrectly. The student volunteers will bring you the NF books that are in
the incorrect place.
To determine who placed a book in the wrong place, go to Circulation. Press F3 and check the book in. Right click on the
book title.
Click on Item Inquire.
Under last returned
information—notice the date and student ID. If the date was within the last few days, write
down the the student ID number.
Go to the F2 tab in circulation and type in the
student ID number.
If the last patron is a Teacher, Pre-K, Kindergarten, or 1st
grader, disregard it.
Remember 2nd through 6th graders are responsible
for E and FIC books. Only 4th through 6th are
responsible for NF books.
Mark the comment box with the name of the books and
date you found it in the wrong
place.
The comment box might look like this: Big Box 10/1/9; Cat in the Hat
10/2/9.
When you are checking out books to students you can tell
them how many books of theirs that you have found in
the wrong place.
Once a student has 5 books in the wrong place, have the student join you (on a day agreed upon by
the PE department), so that you can give the student the individual help they need to put
their books away.
Remember: Do not mark comments for student that
have not been trained on that level. (NF for PreK-3rd grade
and E/FIC for
PreK-1st)
Recruit Student Library Volunteers who will
shelve the Non-fiction books and check the Easy/Fiction shelves.
I always use the highest grade level in my building for library
student volunteers.
Get your principal on board. Explain how the Student
Library Volunteer program can help your school and
library.
Promote the library volunteer program
throughadvertising the incentives:Going to the front of the
lunch line.Pizza parties at the end of
each semester. Playing educational
games on the computer.
Important things about library volunteers:
They must sign in every day and they must attend at least 3
times each week.
Students write their name on a notebook when they are ready
to have their NF and Easy Fiction shelves
checked.
I check shelf number 1 in both Non Fiction and Easy/Fiction
the first week. During week 2, I check shelf number
2……….
Students must have their library shelves neat and in
order by Friday. (I work with them on holidays,
etc.) Students who do not have their shelves in order are given one
additional chance to get their shelves in order
before they get a strike.
Student library volunteers can receive up to five strikes in a semester before they loose
their job.
Reasons for strikes:Not attending 3 times per
week, goofing off, not having their shelf in
order by Friday, losing
their badge,etc.
Library volunteers are always responsible for
neatness of their shelves. They write their name in a notebook when they are
ready for their NF and Easy/Fiction shelves to be
checked by me.
I limit the number of times I will check a student’s
shelf in a day to two checks.
If the student has their NF and Easy/Fiction shelf in
order they receive my initials on the sign
notebook and they can work on the computers, play educational games, talk quietly with friends, etc. until the next shelf is
due.
Every day after the students have completed their shelves (and received my initials),they must check their NF basket for
books and their shelves for neatness before doing anything else.
Additional duties for the librarian:
Monitoring the library volunteers during their
lunch time and monitoring students
attendance and completion of assigned
shelves.
To assist with keeping the library neat during normal class time, I have the first 4
students who check out books straighten the library by
pushing in the
book ends.
I have the students wear lanyards so that I can keep up with who the
library helpers are. I also give a bookmark to those students, as a reward, for
helping.
