Shelve Them and Move On

Bible in a Year: Leviticus 25; Mark 1:23–45

Today's Scripture: Proverbs 15:30–33 (NIV)

In Proverbs, the righteous are the wise, and the foolish are the wicked (for example, see 10:1–3). A wise person is one who obeys God and His Word, thus avoiding moral pitfalls and failures. In contrast, a fool is one who says, “There is no God” (Psalm 14:1). Solomon contrasts the wise and the foolish (Proverbs 10–15), comparing their attitudes, actions, and speech. Proverbs 15 describes the wise person as one who is discerning (v. 21), seeks godly counsel (v. 22), speaks graciously (v. 23), lives cautiously (v. 24), is humble (v. 25), pure (v. 26), honest (v. 27), self-controlled (v. 28), prayerful (v. 29), teachable (vv. 31–32), and fears God (v. 33). The founda-tion for such a godly life is stated at the beginning of Proverbs in 1:7, repeated in 9:10, and reiterated again in 15:33: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom. By: K. T. Sim

I’m reminded of some wise advice a radio broadcaster friend once gave me. Early on in his career, as my friend struggled to know how to deal with both criticism and praise, he felt that

God was encouraging him to shelve both. What’s the essence of what he took to heart? Learn

what you can from criticism and accept praise. Then shelve both and humbly move on in God’s grace and power.

Criticism and praise stir in us powerful emotions that, if left unchecked, can lead to either self-loathing or an overinflated ego. In Proverbs we read of the benefits of encouragement and wise counsel: “Good news gives health to the bones. . . .Those who disregard discipline des-pise themselves, but the one who heeds correction gains understanding” (15:30, 32).

If we’re on the receiving end of a rebuke, may we choose to be sharpened by it. Proverbs states, “Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise” (v. 31). And if we’re blessed with words of praise, may we be refreshed and filled with gratitude. As we walk humbly with God, He can help us learn from both criticism and praise, shelve them, and then

move on in Him (v. 33). By Ruth O'Reilly-Smith

Today's Reflection Father God, thank You for the gift of praise and criticism. As I humbly surrender to You, may I grow and be sharpened by both.

Student Testing

Students from PP – Year 6 will be undergoing testing in Literacy and Numeracy over the

next couple of weeks. The tests will inform teachers about the student’s strengths and

weaknesses and allow them to fine tune their teaching programmes. All students from

years 2 -6 have already completed what is called a “cold test” in writing. The students

were asked to write a narrative or persuasive text without the provision of any teaching

beforehand. At the conclusion of a full term of teaching the students will be asked to

write again and comparisons can be made.

Students in PP – Year 2 will be doing on-entry assessment which provides teachers

with information of skills and understandings a child brings to school. This information is

then used to inform planning and delivery of targeted and intentional learning programs.

These reflect each child’s needs and capabilities - one that supports each child’s

learning journey and enables the review of a child’s progress over time.

Students in years 3 – 6 will undergo standardized testing in Maths, comprehension,

spelling, punctuation and grammar and vocabulary. Their results can be compared with

children all over Australia.

Carnarvon Christian School has zero tolerance towards bullying.

The National definition of bullying as outlined in Bullyingnoway website is:

“Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated

verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psy-

chological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived

power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening.

Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can

be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to

be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records)

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects

on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between

equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.”

It is important to remember that the following does not constitute bullying:

Mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance)

Not liking someone or a single act of social rejection

One-offs acts of meanness or spit

Isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence.

However, these conflicts still need to be addressed and resolved. Please check out

an excellent website if you wish to seek further information about bullying

https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/

Another good website to check out is the Office of eSafety Comissioner.

Carnarvon Christian School website, www.ccs.wa.edu.au now has a new menu item under

“Communities” called ‘Child Safety. This outlines the level of importance we place on this

extremely important area of schooling.

In-term Swimming lessons

Learning to swim is an essential skill for all Australian children to master. Due to a lack of

teachers in Carnarvon, swimming lessons were in danger of being cancelled this year.

However, thanks to Nadine Collin’s preparedness to take on both a supervisory and teach-

er’s role - together with Andrea Anderson’s and Janet Rudge’s willingness to teach, swim-

ming will go ahead as per usual. Please take time to acknowledge their dedication as this

is outside of their normal working roles.

Welcome From Miss Binks and her Year 4 class:

Year 4 students have shiny new iPads and are very much enjoy-

ing using them for their class work.

In Health this Term, we are deepening our understanding of

what a Growth Mindset is and how we can develop it. We are

using Class Dojo's Growth Mindset Series and TedEd talks to

gather information and we will be creating a presentation

explaining how to develop a Growth Mindset. I'm sure the

Year 4’s are going to be creating some interesting and

informative presentations!

KINDY with Mrs Roche

We have welcomed a beautiful new cohort of Kindergarten students into our school over the past

three weeks. The Kindergarten class has been enjoying getting to know one another, building with the

blocks, painting, and getting messy with the sand, water and playdough. We have read some of our

favourite stories together and done lots of exciting craft. This term our class theme will be “All About

Me” and “My Community”. We will be learning about ourselves and what makes us special and

unique. We will learn about friendships, emotions and keeping clean. We will take a look at our local

community and all the different jobs in it and the roles they play. We look forward to an exciting term

in Kindy!

Limitless

Thursday, 21 February 2019 | 02:00 PM

At first glance, a common theme through all Maila Fanning's abstract paintings appears to be an array of palette colours flowing into rivulets and cells. What draws the viewer, almost hypnotically, is the power these creations have to propel one's imagination towards greater depths, challenging new meaning from the illusion of the surreal scapes presented.

Limitless will be on show at Carnarvon Library and Art Gallery from Thursday 14 February 2019 to 16 March 2019.
