About usThe Royal Academy of Music is Britain’s seniorconservatoire, founded in 1822. We prepare students for asuccessful life-long career in music according to the rapidly-evolving demands of the profession. Students are trained atthe highest level in instrumental performance, composition,jazz, media, musical theatre and opera, gaining University of London degrees from BMus to PhD level.

The Academy's most distinguished alumni include famousnames such as John Barbirolli, Harrison Birtwistle, EvelynGlennie, Elton John, Felicity Lott, Joanna MacGregor,Michael Nyman, Simon Rattle and Henry Wood.

Teaching staff are distinguished musicians, active at the very top of their professions. The Academy’s students, whomake up a vibrant community in which over 50 countries are represented, follow diverse programmes which rangefrom performance to composition, jazz, media, musicaltheatre and a new specialist course, Royal Academy Opera.The only music college boasting membership of theUniversity of London, the Academy offers postgraduatetraining to Doctorate level.

The Academy enjoys a highly enviable location alongsideRegent's Park in central London. A major new extension intothe neighbouring Nash-designed York Gate building includesa custom-designed 150-seat recital hall. The York GateCollections, a new internationally-significant museumhousing a broad selection of exhibits from the Academy’ssuperb archives, are open free of charge seven days a week.On display in the Collections, many of them for the first time, are our unique collection of stringed instruments by the greatest Italian makers including the ‘Archinto’ viola by Stradivari, a floor of English pianos tracing technicaldevelopments during the first half of the 19th century, anditems from the working collections of eminent musicians and from the history of the Academy.
