The event celebrat- ed the conclusion of the Metro South Chamber’s 100th year of serving businesses and exceed- ing the goal of the Chamber’s Centennial Campaign Fund. The celebration included an Expo featuring over 50 busi- nesses, caricature drawings, strolling holiday carollers, valuable raffles and give-aways, and keynote speaker Ken Gronbach. The event also featured the presentation of numerous awards including the Charles A. Fuller Award to President of Bridgewater State University, Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria, and Board Service Awards Brockton Tax Hearing: It’s Time to Speak Up! report to Loretta DeGrazia, East Coast Petroleum; Steve Hall, Control Point Technologies; and Patricia Williams, HarborOne Bank. In addition, Economic Impact Awards were presented to 11 companies whose combined investment exceeded eighty-five million dollars and represents employment of 450 people. Susan Joss, Executive Director of Brockton Neighborhood Health Center, was elected Chair of the Metro South Chamber, fol- lowing William Morse of Mutual Bank who recently completed his term. Joss is the second woman to serve as the Chair in the history of the Metro South Brockton is the hub of the Metro South Region (south of Boston). With an extensive infrastructure, ample work- force, and strategic location, it is a natural hub of business and an attractive city for businesses looking to grow and expand. Aside from these factors, how- ever, the most prominent indi- cator a business considers in choosing where to operate is the commercial tax rate. This is particularly true when compar- ing a nearby community or a similar sized "gateway city." When combining a lower com- mercial tax rate with water and sewer rates, a city like Brockton can gain a significant strategic advantage in attracting and retaining business. In order to achieve growth, Brockton must provide an irresistible value to business. Setting a tax rate of 1.5 is a clear sign, Brockton wants business! Over the past 4 years, the City Council took a step to attract and retain business when they adopted a tax fairness strategy by a 6 - 5 vote. This step is part of a larger strategy designed to attract and retain businesses in Brockton, thereby increasing the commercial tax base and alleviating the burden to resi- dents. The Chamber considers the move toward a factor of 1.5 beneficial to Brockton residents because when businesses locate and grow here, job creation for city residents is the result. Business-friendly policies pro- mote strong businesses and in turn good jobs. The current commercial tax in Brockton is 33.96 for every $1,000 of a property's assessed value - up from $18.48 in 2008. Good Samaritan Receives 5th “A” Safety GradeGood Samaritan Medical Center was award-ed an “A” grade in the Fall 2014 update to theHospital Safety Score, which rates how wellhospitals protect patients from accidents,errors, injuries, and infections. The HospitalSafety Score is compiled under the guidanceof the nation’s leading experts on patient safe-ty and is administered by The LeapfrogGroup (Leapfrog), an independent industrywatchdog. “Good Samaritan is a fifth-timerecipient of Leapfrog’s recognition since 2012which is a testament to processes and culturewe have developed around patient safety as atop priority throughout our organization,”said John A. Jingle Bell RunKids and adults will put on their Rudolphand Santa costumes for the city’s 16th annu-al Jingle Bell Run on Saturday, Dec. 6. Therun will begin at 1 pm at the ConferenceCenter at Massasoit, 770 Crescent Street inBrockton;registration will start at noon. Eachyear, the run is held to raise money and collecttoys for The Enterprise’s Helping HandsFund. All of the money and toys raised for theevent are donated to local charity organiza-tions. There will be a free buffet lunch, prizesfor costumes, raffles, DJ, live music, andappearance by Santa Claus. The registrationfee is $20 for adults and $10 for children age 12and younger. Chamber Cited in Brockton Self-AssessmentThe Northeastern University Dukakis Center for Urban & Regional Policy

recently released an economic report on Brockton using the EconomicDevelopment Self-Assessment Toll (EDSAT). EDSAT is an important step that pub-lic officials can take to assess their jurisdictions’ strengths and weaknesses withrespect to expanding and sustaining economic growth.

The report identified the “Metro South Chamber of Commerce as an ImportantStrength of Brockton for being vigorously active in the business community.” As aresult, it was recommended that Brockton build upon strengths such as the MetroSouth Chamber, and promote them to prospective businesses and developers.

The Metro South Chamber of Commerce welcomes three new membersto its Board of Directors: Jason Barbosa, Vicente’s Tropical Grocery, JohnJurczyk, Good Samaritan Medical Center, Mahsa Khanbabai, Law Officeof Mahsa Khanbabai, and Friend Weiler, HarborOne Bank.

In their new role as directors, they will be responsible for helping the Chamber carry out its mission: to serve the interests of member businesses while providingcommunity leadership to ensure the economic advancement of the Metro Southregion. The 30 member Board of Directors are elected from and by members of theMetro South Chamber of Commerce.

The Board of Directors meets regularly to address policy and issues ofeconomic and community concern.

At its 101st Annual Meeting, the Metro South Chamber of Commercepresented the Charles A. Fuller ChamberService Award to Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria,President of Bridgewater State University.

Dr. Dana Mohler Faria, 11thPresident of Bridgewater State University,has elevated the University and theregion to unprecedented levels since tak-ing the reins in 2002. Bridgewater Statehas been transformed from a regionalcollege into a first rate University withglobal reach. BSU is now amongst thelargest four-year institutions of highereducation in Massachusetts and hasadded more square footage to theircampus than any other public universi-ty in recent history. Dr. Mohler Faria

Dr. Mohler-Faria Receives Charles A. Fuller Awardhas also contributed positively to theeconomy through the management ofa foundation which incorporates paidinternships for students throughoutthe Metro South region.

Dr. Mohler Faria has served morethan 10 years on the Metro SouthChamber of Commerce Board ofDirectors, providing support for manyChamber initiatives and programs.

In fact, sponsorship of a Chamberbreakfast meeting resulted in an intro-duction to candidate for Governor DevalPatrick. This meeting led to the appoint-ment of Dr. Mohler Faria as GovernorDeval Patrick’s Special Advisor forEducation. Dr. Dana Mohler Faria alsoprovided leadership for two Chamberdelegations to Cape Verde and played apivotal role in what is expected tobecome the Downtown BrocktonHigher Education Collaborative, with aphysical presence on Main Street.

Chamber of Commerce.Before passing the gavel to Susan Joss, Morse reflected on some of the many

recent accomplishments of the Chamber over the past year. These achieve-ments included hosting over 70 programs, celebrating more than 20 new busi-nesses with Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies, commissioning a study through theUMass Donahue on the creation of a Regional Water Supply & TreatmentAuthority as well as a study of the underutilized 32 acre Brockton CSXRailyard, embarking on a regional branding campaign, hosting Brocktondevelopment tours, advocating for a water rate freeze and lower commercialtax rates, and more.

Morse went on to congratulate the Chamber on celebrating their 100thanniversary and talk about the Chamber’s Centennial Innovation Fund. TheChamber sought to raise $350,000 through the fund to renovate its headquar-ters and transform the Thomas Edison Power Station into an efficient and mod-ern business hub. Peter Neville, Past Chair and President of Concord Foodsmade the big annoucement that the Chamber exceeded their target and raised$354,000. (See more on page 11).

Joss, newly elected as Chamber Chair, demonstrated her enthusiasm andoptimism for the future of the Metro South Chamber, looking forward to pro-viding leadership during the completion of the Chamber building renovations,the completion of the water/sewer study, the expansion of the Metro Southbrand into the community, the political engagement of the new governor andadministration, and more.
