President’s Crib Another amazing Fall with AAUW TCB

successfully holding our annual members social at a

new venue--Colonial Country Club. Membership

continues to steadily grow and retention is steady! Monthly programs

are well attended, and offer a variety of quality speakers on topics in line

with National recommendations! Community service projects offer

members opportunities to volunteer, most recently with Food Bank

distribution, the Girls Inc. Day of the Girl March, scholarship reviews

for Girls Inc., and our annual Sister to Sister Summit.

Our interest groups, including 2 books clubs, dining opportunities, and

Bunco, offer either intellectual or social stimulation—something for

everyone! We certainly have a vibrant and interesting member

involvement!

Our new 501(c)(3) non-profit designation opens new donor

opportunities, and tax deductions for our members. Fundraising with

flower cards, with a NEW florist, and the annual Spring silent auction

support our mission! A third TCC scholarship is in place also.

As we move towards 2015, our Board will continue to focus on public

relations and strategic planning for our Branch. We will look for

opportunities such as sponsoring the Women’s Policy Forum Symposium

and the Girls Inc. March. We intend to remain relevant for both our

current and future members, and for our community.

I welcome your views and participation, Karen Vanderwerken

SISTER TO SISTER Summit – Saturday, November 8

Many thanks to all who volunteered and contributed to this year’s Sister-to-

Sister Summit. It was another successful event in our 14th year! Sixty-eight Middle School girls, thirty-five college women, and thirty-one volunteers participated!

Specifically, our appreciation goes out to:

College women from TCU and TCC-Trinity River Campus who acted as mentors.

Cecilia Silva for recruiting the women from TCU, helping train mentors and printing. Mary DuBoise, Co-chair of Sister-to-Sister, for recruiting TCC-Trinity Campus volunteers,

participating in training, communications with FWISD, and other many other organizational

activities. Jo Linda Martinez, Co-chair of Sister-to-Sister, for work with the curriculum and acting as

our liaison with Tarrant County College. June Hill for tackling the tough task of logistics yet another year! Volunteers from Delta Kappa Gamma, Delta Chapter, who raised funds for the Summit and

helped on the day, making this their annual service project. Community Volunteer Elda Rodriguez, a Fort Worth ISD employee, who worked with

curriculum, trained the mentors and acted as MC for the event. All the AAUW-TCB members who assisted with community and personal donations for the gift

bags, warm up exercises, serving food, making goodie bags, cleanup and much, much more!! TCC-Trinity River Campus and Vice-President Robert Muñoz for providing the venue, breakfast

Community Projects

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT – November 13 On Thursday, November 13, the Community Service Interest Group will meet to review scholarship

applications from Girls Inc. program participants. These are high school juniors applying for college scholarships awarded by the national Girls Inc. organization. The Tarrant County affiliate is eligible to send five applications for consideration. Becky Balarin, Senior Program Director for Girls Inc. will join us, to provide guidelines and answer questions. The scholarship application review will be held at

the home of Tricia Deitz, 4104 Ranier Court, from 10 am to noon. Our community service activities are open to all branch members, and if you think you might like to join us, please contact Tricia at [email protected].

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL – October 10

Girls Inc. of Tarrant County celebrated the International Day of the Girl on Friday, October 10 on Main Street in downtown Fort Worth. Over 600 girls and women marched - there was a sea of red

t-shirts from the Convention Center to the Courthouse. A huge contingent of girls from the Young Women's Leadership Academy came from their downtown campus, but there were also babies in

strollers and school age girls brought by their moms or their aunts

or their grandmothers. There were women's groups and workers from downtown offices. And there were 20 members of our AAUW Tarrant County Branch marching as a team!

It was quite a scene at the Courthouse, where we shouted "Strong, Smart and Bold" over and over. Mayor Betsy Price read a proclamation declaring October 10 the official Day of the Girl and

everyone took pictures of everyone else. Our team was recognized near the end of the program as one of the special teams.

Thanks to Barbara Cager who organized the branch's efforts and the 20 women who marched. A special thanks to Barbara Cager, Tricia Deitz, Dawn Ellison, and Peggy Harwood who made additional

contributions so that our branch team would reach the level to be included in publicity via the Girls Inc. Facebook and Twitter pages and on the back of the t-shirts.

Barbara Cager was surprised by receiving an award for being the 2014 Individual Recruiting the Most

Participants. It was a fun afternoon and if you missed it this year, put it on your calendar for October 9, 2015! -- Marsha Abeson, Team Co-Captain with Barbara Cager

VOTER REGISTRATION SERVICE PROJECT – September 29th & 30th On Sept 29th and 30th six members of our branch who had been trained as deputy voter registrars held a voter registration drive at the Tarrant County College-Trinity River Campus. We turned in a

total of 42 new voter applications and several change of address applications. On Tuesday, our efforts were greatly enhanced by the participation of an on-campus student group, whose members comfortably approached students their own age and encouraged them to register to vote at our

table. There were also several political science professors using these drives as a “teachable moment,” and stressing the importance of exercising one’s right and responsibility to vote. The Trinity River Campus is truly a beautiful and welcoming environment for students. We were all

energized by this experience and ready to do it again in the future. Our contact at TCC was very helpful and we are considering trying to coordinate future drives with the same student group.

-- Tricia Deitz, Community Service Chair

Times Ten Wine Tasting and Cocktail Buffet – Save the Date – April 12th

It’s time to start planning our annual silent auction fundraiser. This year scheduled for Sunday, April 12th, again at Times Ten Cellars, 1100 Foch St., 3:30 – 6 pm. The Fundraising Committee is

requesting members assist by soliciting items such as weekend getaways, condo stays, airline tickets, dining, spa treatments, event tickets (symphony, theatre, sports), fashion accessories and artworks for the silent auction. Begin planning the items you will contribute. Because space is limited for

display, gift baskets will be limited to 12 this year. We are requesting that members sign up to help with the event and let us know the items you will solicit and donate.

Please contact Ann Bracey [email protected] regarding any items you are able to secure for

this fundraiser, so that members do not ask the same vendor. Ann can supply a standard letter stating our nonprofit status to your donor. Please begin turning in auction items to Ann or Barbara as soon as you have them with a business card from the vendor.

Come celebrate an April Sunday afternoon with your friends from AAUW and help us raise funds for our local scholarships, national grants, and other projects.

-- Ann Bracey and Barbara Young-Gollaher

Tarrant County College Scholarship News The TCC Scholarship Recognition Dinner held on October 30, 2014 at the Trinity River Campus is always an inspirational and rewarding event. This year BJ Hoskins, Barbara Cager and Pat Auping represented our branch. We were so pleased that all three of our recipients were in attendance. They

are Brittany Trammell, Melissa Kirkland and Chelsea Ewing. It was a great opportunity to share an evening of conversation and laughs, and then to be inspired by the presenters. Brittany is a math major returning recipient whom we met last year. She will finish her third and fourth semester

this year. Melissa is also in her third and fourth semester as a math major. Besides college, she juggles a full family life with her husband and 6 children. Chelsea is in education with a major in math. She also has a busy life with her three children, aged seven, six, and six months. All of these

amazing women are currently in the honor society at TCC. Quite Impressive! An invitation has been extended to all three to attend our Holiday get together on Nov 19th. I know

you will enjoy meeting and talking to them. -- Pat Auping & BJ Hoskins, TCC Scholarship Co-Chairs
