Borchers at Our Savior Lutheran in Austin, where I preached and made a Bible Class presentation.

This gift is our way of showing personal gratitude and thanks to God for faithful support of JILM. If your congregation would like to have a JILM volunteer make a presentation about our mission, please contact us.

Jesus Is Lord Mission is all about sharing the Good News so people world-wide can learn that Jesus is their Savior for their eternal salvation. The challenges are many. With your faithful prayers, generous gifts, personal involvement and encouragement, great things are happening for the mission outreach of LCMS.

In this season of Thanksgiving, we have much to be thankful for personally, in our family, community, nation, church and especially JILM. May God bless each of you and JILM.

Your fellow servant in Christ,Wilbern Michalk, JILM President 512-971-4857

At left, Ross Stroh displays the memento he received from JILM. All of the mementoes that have been presented were hand-crafted by President Michalk.

Dear friends of JILM,

You are indeed friends, supporters, prayer partners, missionaries and ambassadors of Christ, with us, through JILM.

The letters “JILM” have become familiar to us over the past 17 years of our existence. During the past few months, a memento that displays the letters in an attractive way has been given to the founding members of JILM, to several congregations, and other partners of our organization. Mr. Ross Stroh, executive director of accounting for LCMS and a JILM member, displays one in the Office of International Mission in St. Louis.

Rev. Micah Wildauer, missionary from Africa, received one of these mementoes when he visited last spring. In September, one was presented to Rev. Eric

In July the children from the six Project 24 sites gathered for the bi-annual Catechetical Club competition at the Rongo site. All 190 children competed in drama, songs, and recitations. Their knowledge of the Bible and Small Catechism was shown by their dramas of Jesus healing the blind man, reciting the Ten Commandments and their meanings from the Small Catechism, as well as their fun cultural songs. Some time was spent by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya pastors teaching lessons to the children. This year, the lessons included the history of the Reformation and the Sabbath Day.

Update from CLET - Togo

During the summer Rev. Ryan McDermott and his family were called to return to the United States for service there. Their departure leaves a void in the CLET family. Please pray for the McDermotts and all the faculty and students at CLET.

At the end of June, thirteen students (in photo below) completed their work at CLET and returned to their home countries and churches. Eleven of them are cleared to begin vicarages. Two of them will most likely serve in other auxiliary offices in the church. It has been encouraging to see on social media that several of these students have already received gifts and support from their families and local communities so that they can dedicate their time to service and evangelism in their vicarages.

JILM continues to support the ten vicars who serve in Sri Lanka. Many of the vicars minister to people who work on the numerous tea plantations. Approximately 200,000 people are so employed, usually earning very low wages (less than $10 per day). Their standard of living is significantly lower than that of people living in urban areas. Because of low wages, many of the younger people leave the tea plantations to work in the cities. The vicars assist people with many of the problems of daily life in addition to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The vicars are mentored by two missionary families who have recently been joined by a vicar and his family. The missionaries are valuable teachers and supporters in the difficult task of sharing the Gospel in Sri Lanka.

Rev. Steven Mahlburg and his wife, Martha, have served in Sri Lanka for two years. They recently returned to their home in Colombo after a trip to the US to visit family and friends. Rev. Mahlburg serves the Ceylon Evangelical

Lutheran Church (CELC) in Sri Lanka, an organization that is reorganizing in order to better reach the Sri Lankan people. In addition to serving Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Colombo by conducting English services, he provides administrative support, Christian education, and mentoring for the pastors, evangelists (vicars) and lay people of the CELC. He travels to many of the congregations in Sri Lanka to encourage a bold witness to Jesus Christ.

Rev. Dr. Edward Naumann and his wife, Monica, have served as missionaries since 2015. In his role as a theological

educator, Rev. Naumann works with local church leaders in Sri Lanka to train new pastors, to provide opportunities for ongoing theological education, and to produce Christian educational publications. Through the relationships formed, he and his wife share the Gospel with the people in the communities in which they serve.

Soli Deo Gloria

Vicar Benjamin Vanderhyde and his wife, Grace, arrived in Sri Lanka in May, 2019. They write: “On Sunday, May 19, Benjamin’s supervisor, Pastor Mahlburg, officially installed him as a vicar. This was our first Sunday in Sri Lanka and we had the pleasure of meeting the brothers and sisters at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Colombo. The Tamil congregation welcomed us with flower garlands. Emmanuel’s own Pastor Devanesan took part in the installation.” Benjamin trains musicians to serve the CELC while assisting the other LCMS missionaries there with their work and learning from them. He is currently pursuing his Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.

Rev. Sorin Trifa is pastor of the first Lutheran congregation in Romania in the Romanian language. Rev. Trifa’s work has the potential of spilling into Italy, where there are four million Romanians and a desire for confessional Lutheran preaching and teaching in Romanian, Italian (similar language), and English. In addition to the newly-founded Evangelical Lutheran Church of Romania, there is a Lutheran church plan in Padua, Italy, and exploration work to establish a Lutheran church plant in Rome.
