. . . A step to our future home Dear Congregants,

I am thrilled to announce that we “Adat Chaverim” are, as of January 18, 2017, the proud owners of

the land at Lebanon and Batsford Drive in Frisco, TX. It was with great pleasure that I signed the

official papers yesterday, reflecting on the future that lays ahead of us in our own building on our

own land. This is something any President of any congregation would like to experience.

Looking back… Over three years ago, Adat Chaverim, starting with a Strategic Planning effort,

began the process of laying the groundwork for our future home. The Atideinu Committee, led by

Howard Flushman made the first steps and recommendations, soon followed by the Livnot

Committee, led by David Goldstein to commence

fundraising. Finally, in 2016, these efforts merged

together into a singular focused Capital Campaign

Committee, led by Terry Sigle.

There are so many leaders in these committees that should

be thanked. In no particular order:

• Meryl Fein & Howard Flushman, Gifts

• Michael Novendstern & Susan Schwartz, Architecture

• Sibylle Jacobs, Communications

• Lewis Zwick, Real Estate

• Dotty Fox, Administration

• Rabbi Ben Sternman

It would be difficult to list the numerous members of these

sub-committees in a single email, so thank you to all of you

who have served on the Capital Campaign in any capacity.

This initial land purchase was made possible by the 105

members who have generously pledged and made gifts to

the Capital Campaign. THANK YOU.

We hope to bring all members on board as we continue to

move forward. This land acquisition is a huge milestone in

the history of Adat Chaverim and the first tangible one to our future

goal of a permanent home in North Texas.

This is a proud day for our Adat Chaverim Family!

Rabbi’s Corner...

Purim is one of my favorite holidays and here at Adat Chaverim, I love it even more. The idea that our High School students study the megillah and write the Purim Spiel themselves after learning the story, just makes me happy. Plus who couldn’t love Hamentachen — apricot, of course — with the combination of delicious buttery cookie and sweet fruit filling? Then there’s the celebration itself where the world is turned upside down, we dress up in costumes, make fun of ourselves and each other and are given permission to drink to excess on this one day. When I was in seminary, Dr. Eugene Borowitz, one the most dignified, scholarly professors in the college, was disappointed if he was not specifically singled out to be made fun of during our Purim Spiels.

There is, however, a dangerous undertone to our celebrations, if we let ourselves think too long on it. The Purim story contains within it, a menacing thread of anti-Semitism, perhaps the original anti-Semitism. After all, Haman is insulted by one Jew, Mordechai, and immediately wants to kill all Jews, everywhere. We Jews have lived with anti-Semitism ever since, and worrisomely, it seems as if anti-Semitism is again on the rise. Anti-Semitism has grown under the disguise of being anti-Israel. There have been swastikas painted on synagogues and Jewish organizational build-ings. Random verbal assaults have become more frequent, open and unashamed. Here in Dallas and around the country, JCC’s have been the subject of bomb threats.

If we were to follow the Purim story, we would react in one of two ways: we could sit in sackcloth and ashes, bewailing our fate or we could get so drunk we couldn’t tell the difference anyway. But there is a third way, a more productive way to react to this rise of anti-Semitism. We can sing silly songs, make fun of ourselves, and enjoy the good life that God has granted to us. But we can go further, acting as a light unto the nations, sharing gifts of sh’lach manot with those who are less fortunate than ourselves. When we act with joy in our lives and share our good fortune, we change the world for the better, making it a place where anti-Semitism simply has no more room to exist.

Funny enough, God is never once mentioned in the Book of Esther and the story of Purim. It is left to human action to save the day. I am reminded of my favorite meditation from our prayer book leading into the Tefilah: Pray as if everything depended on God; act as if everything depended on you. It is in our hands to face the challenges of our day, just as previous generations faced the challenges in theirs. As Purim teaches us, we are fully able to face our future with joy, celebration and the positive change we can make for ourselves.

L’Shalom,

Rabbi Ben

SESSION 1 12:15—1:15 pm PURIM SHPIEL

BEGINS AT 1:15 pm

B'Nai Torah Classes Semester 2 12:15-1:15 pm Teacher Valerie Klein This course is for grades 11—12

Believe it or not, college is right around the corner and you may be thinking about bedding, roommates and classes, but have you thought about what do bring as a Jew? Packing for College gives time and a

safe place for exploration and conversation about the how’, whys and ifs of being a practicing Jew in college.

What’s the God you don’t believe in? 12:15-1:15 pm Teacher—Rabbi Sternman This course is for grades 9—10

I often have people who tell me they don’t believe in God and I always ask a question back: What’s the God you don’t believe in? There are many ways of understanding God and they are more complex than you learned about before becoming bar/bat mitzvah. People often have one God-image that no longer works for them and reject belief in God completely. We’re going to explore many ways of understanding God with the hope that one of them will work for you. You’ve got questions about God and, together, we’ll look for the answers.

Aiden is the 15 year old son of Elizabeth Zane of Plano and Robert Zane of Frisco, and the brother of Audrey, 18. He fills his spare time playing any sport of the "EA" variety. Most recently, Aiden has been found on the couch playing EA Sports NHL 17 on the Xbox One.

Aiden combines his love of sports, math and video games together by creating his own teams and leagues on the Xbox complete with statistics even Bill James of Sabermetrics fame would be proud.

Aiden is a First Class Scout in Boy Scout Troop 261 in Plano and is a member of the Brandeis Chapter of BBYO. His favorite vacation was the week he spent in Cincinnati for the 2015 MLB All-Star Game.

Aiden's favorite sports are baseball and hockey. His favorite two teams are the Texas A&M Aggies, and any team playing the UT Longhorns. He is a fan of the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL. This summer, Aiden is planning a trip to Boston to experience a baseball game in the iconic Fenway Park and see the "Green Monster" in person.

Inclusion Awareness Shabbat

heightens congregational aware-ness, acceptance and inclusion of worshippers of all abilities. Our participation in Inclusion Awareness Shabbat affirms our commitment to making Judaism accessible to all Jews in our community.

We have chosen the Shabbat of

Friday, February 17, 2017 as

Inclusion Awareness Shabbat.

Our CFTY teens planned and held a Parent's Night Out event at the synagogue on January 14. It was a great

success with the parents enjoying an evening out while the kids spent time with our CFTY teens entertaining them.

Dinner and ice cream sundaes were enjoyed by all. Our teens planned fun activities including basketball, karaoke, facials, manicures and a scavenger hunt throughout the building. We are not sure who had more fun, the kids or the teens. Many thanks to the parents that supported our teens. With the help of these CFTY teens; Rachel

our community every day, we are all strengthened.

It is the mission of the Adat Chaverim Inclusion

Committee “Kulanu-all of us together”, to build a

strong community in congregational life that

all individuals with special needs, and /or limitations, are valued,

respected and included.

Please join us as we focus on access and inclusion through a special service conducted by Rabbi Sternman.

Participating in Inclusion Awareness Shabbat is just one step toward making our congregation more accessible. To have a real and lasting impact, we must extend our commitment beyond this special day. When we truly welcome members of all abilities into

“Rabbi Eliezer says:

“Let other people ’s

dignity be as precious

to you as your own.”

(Pirkei Avot 2:15)

CFTY NEWS Granados, Jacob Novendstern, Eve Dauber, Jenna Sigle and Abby Kerner, we pulled off an amazing event—these teens are all awesome!

Former Macharnik, now college student, Meghan Santos helped chaperone the event along with Debra Kerner and Michelle Baier. Future Macharniks, eight graders Mikaela Zibby and Courtney Fallick, took the lead, rolled up their sleeves and tired out kids along with our CFTY teens.

We cannot wait until we

do this again!

Mickey Blakeman March 25, 2017

A football helmet, a motorcycle helmet, a ski helmet, Mickey chose to wear a few different hats this final year before turning 13 and moving into his teens. But why not? The son of Bryan and Stephanie Blakeman and older brother to Joshua, he was three months old he flew on his first International flight to Central America. Stepping off a cruise ship onto an island in the Caribbean or navigating the busy streets near Times Square in New York, Mickey is just as comfortable on the slopes of Big Bear or Angel Fire as eating a dog behind the Ranger’s dugout on a hot summer night.

A 7th grader at Fowler Middle School and well-liked by his teachers, this loveable, eclectic boy finds science articles in “Wired” fun to investigate, executes missions at “Hard Knocks,” masters his PS4 and frequents a litany of Texas BBQ joints in pursuit of the best ribs. Whether on the field with his football team or playing his sax in concert, Mickey gives life his best effort and enjoys the journey.

On March 25th we will observe the transition from childhood to his age of accountability. Thanks for coming and celebrating this defining moment in a life that seems to move at the speed of sound.

Men of Adat Chaverim:

You’ve probably heard of the Adat Chaverim Brotherhood. Maybe you’ve joined us for a Sunday morning Breakfast, helped out with fundraising, helped build of sukkah or ushering.

Our main purpose is to encourage the men of Adat Chaverim to engage in projects and activities that provide meaningful service to the congregation and our neighbors; and give the men of Adat Chaverim the opportunity to become actively involved in temple activities, e.g., fundraisers to help support programs in our school or temple; or social activities such as our annual Chili Cook-off, gaming and sports.

If you are not a member please join now. If you’ve been a member, be sure to renew now! The greater our membership, the more we can accomplish together.

To join or renew visit our membership page at www.adatchaverim.org. Please give some thought to joining us – or rejoining us. We look forward to welcoming you.

L’Shalom,

Marty Fox President

RECYCLE YOUR

INK & TONER

CARTRIDGES!

DONATION OPPORTUNITY FOR

ADAT CHAVERIM

Are you signed up with your Kroger loyalty card for “Community Rewards”?

Once you register one time on Kroger.com and choose Adat Chaverim, a percentage of your purchase is donated to your temple.

It is FREE, fast and easy!! Costs you nothing. It does NOT affect any other program, such as gas

discounts or coupons. Look for volunteers to help

you sign up in the front office. Your shopping at Kroger can

help offset our congregational costs as pro-grams grow and improve to serve you.

How can you help? Turn them in the box in the front hall

We get credit at an office supply store for each cartridge

We get some office supplies needed to run the temple, for free

You help the temple, less plastic goes into the landfill, less new materials are used to manufacture new ink cartridges. Triple Mitzvah!

We were able to save over $5,000 towards the Office operating budget using this

program in 2016!
