A spring snapshot from the Prairieview Art Room: It has been a busy year, full of new ideas and new ways of creating art. Our FIRST graders have finished primary color paper quilt squares, worked in pairs to create a very BIG painting full of shapes and color, had the opportunity to work with clay to make a pinch pot, made a picture using only letters, and talked about the artist Monet. Our most recent project shows the students imagining they visited Monet’s garden and walked on his Japanese bridge, with beautiful watercolor paints. In SECOND grade students made some very charismatic giraffes with warm and cool colors, played with pattern and line to transform a 2-D doodle into a 3-D paper sculpture, learned about mosaics and made one in the shape of the first letter of their name, talked about perspective and drew bumblebees from different views. Now we are working on creating some textured turtles out of clay. In THIRD grade we read George Rodrigue’s “Why is Blue Dog Blue?” book and students asked themselves what color they would paint their own Blue Dogs. They created a dream-like picture while talking about Chagall and his paintings, made a layered paper animal Mola, created a coil pot and a texture pendant from clay. We are continuing our 3-D work learning how to weave. The FOURTH graders worked on a double Picasso portrait, made some impressive nutcracker drawings out of just a few different shapes, created a class picture where everyone designed a quarter of a circle, made a picture with oil pastels and crumpled it up (!!) before painting it in a water-based paint to get a batik type effect. We are using printmaking to make some Artist Trading Cards now and will be assembling our recycled Nevelson box sculptures before the end of the year. As our school year ends, we are beginning something new as well. Please visit our school’s own student Art museum on Artsonia.com. We are also writing artist statements to go along with some of our work. Families and friends can purchase copies of our famous Prairieview artist’s work. Take a look!! Thank you to everyone that helped to support our Art program this year, whether it was sending in supplies or recycled things, washing our art smocks, making tape rolls for an art show or just supporting your children in their creative endeavors. Their journey in imagination is so important. Please continue to encourage your children to practice drawing, painting and looking at the world around them for inspiration. Enjoy the process of creating and have a fantastic summer! Mrs. Tebussek [email protected]

From the Sidelines     It’s been a great year in Physical Education (PE) so far. Our goal is to teach students many different sports and activities to help each child find enjoyment in being physically active! As we get closer to the end we start to prepare for next year. Half day Kindergarten friends will advance to three days of PE a week in 1st Grade. 2nd Grade will learn more sport units next year in 3rd grade. 4th graders will have PE five days a week in 5th grade. We wish our 4th grade students good luck next year at Frederick!     3rd and 4th grade classes had made many accomplishments in sports such as Football, Soccer, Volleyball, Hockey, Bowling, Basketball, Frisbee and Kickball. Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades did similar units throughout the year. These include throwing and catching, rolling, Bowling, Jump Rope, Scooters, Volleyball, Fitness Stations, Soccer, Basketball, Hockey, Frisbee, Tag Games, and Kickball.     Our Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser was a success! The students were able to raise $2,229.30! All that money went to the American Heart Association. It’s awesome to see young kids take an interest in helping others. We will do this fundraiser again in late winter/early spring of 2014.

Please be on the lookout for Field Day fliers to be sent home soon regarding our Field Day. The date will be June 5 and we will have several outdoor activities planned. Hopefully the weather cooperates so we can enjoy being physically active outside. We encourage all of our students and families of Prairieview to stay physically active throughout the summer! We hope you all have a great one and can’t wait to see everyone back in the Fall.

Sincerely, Mr. Hart [email protected]

News from the Media Center Mrs. Innes and Mrs. Persha

We have lots to celebrate as we wind down our year in the Media

Center! Our students have learned their way around the library, checked out over 24,000 books this year and had a great time reading! During National Library Week students shared their favorite Prairieview Library books with all of us. We like lots of different kinds of books. We would like to thank PTO for donating some books to our library after the Book Fairs! All year long the classrooms have been participating in a contest to see which class can return all their library books the most times! We can’t wait to find out who the winner is! We will announce it on PVTV next week. As a special treat, every student who returns his or her library books at the end of the year will receive a free ice cream reward from Tastee Freeze! Make sure you say thank you to them when you go to enjoy your ice cream! Grayslake and Round Lake Area Libraries have Summer Reading Programs planned. Visit your library and keep reading over the summer! We want to extend a VERY special thank you to all of our parent and senior volunteers! We truly appreciate all that you do for us each week!

In the Computer Lab we have been blogging, creating iMovies, animations, GarageBand podcasts, kid pix slideshows-we have been doing lots and lots! Students have learned how to stay safe on the Internet and have used fabulous resources found on the Internet. All of our students have been working on keyboarding at different levels. This is a great skill to work on over the summer. On the CCSD #46 website, under the Parents and Students Tab, scroll down to Student Educational Links. This will guide you to lots of websites to visit over the summer. Keyboarding activities can be found under the Reference button, scroll to keyboarding. First graders have enjoyed Super Hyper Spider Typer and Second graders have enjoyed BBC Dance Mat Typing. There are lots more to check out and try as well!

Happy Reading! Happy typing! Happy Summer! Sincerely, Mrs. Persha [email protected] Mrs. Innes [email protected]
