June, 2014 FROM THE RABBI This year, Temple Shalom's Shavuot services will be held at 7:30 P.M. on Wednesday evening, June 4th. In the Jewish tradition, Shavuot is referred to as z'man matan Torateinu - the season of the giving of our law. In Reform Judaism, we celebrate Shavuot as the holiday commemorating the giving of the Ten Commandments. And it's tradi- tional to eat dairy foods on Shavuot. Why dairy foods? Here are some reasons: 1) The Torah and the Ten Commandments are like milk and honey. 2) After receiving the Ten Command- ments, the Israelites didn't want to waste a lot of time preparing a meat meal, which involved slaughtering an animal and cooking the meat. So they ate dairy. 3) The Israelites didn't want to be reminded of the golden calf and the subsequent breaking of the first tablets containing the Ten Commandments by Moses. The services will include the reading of the Ten Commandments from the Torah and Yizkor memorial prayers for departed loved ones. The services will also include a Conversion to Judaism Ceremony for Dr. Henry and Sharon Gonzales. As part of their conversion, Henry and Sharon will each receive an ali- yah - they each will be called up to chant the blessings for the reading of the Torah. Following the services, there will be a DAIRY DESSERT BONANZA. We are asking congregants to bring a dairy dessert (either home-made or store-bought) for the DAIRY DES- SERT BONANZA. The following are some possibilities: cheese blintzes, cheese cake, cream puffs, sour cream cake, Boston cream pie, whipped cream pie, etc. You don't have to tell me in advance what you are bringing. Just show up with your dairy dessert. Remember to come at 7:30 P.M. on Wednesday evening, June 4th, to experience a Shavuot service, Yizkor, a Conversion Ceremony and a Dairy Dessert Bonanza. It should be a very en- joyable evening - both spiritually and gastronomically. FROM THE RABBI

This year, Temple Shalom's Shavuot services will be held at 7:30 P.M.

on Wednesday evening, June 4th.

In the Jewish tradition, Shavuot is referred to as z'man matan Torateinu - the

season of the giving of our law. In Reform Judaism, we celebrate Shavuot as the

holiday commemorating the giving of the Ten Commandments. And it's tradi-

tional to eat dairy foods on Shavuot. Why dairy foods? Here are some reasons: 1) The Torah

and the Ten Commandments are like milk and honey. 2) After receiving the Ten Command-

ments, the Israelites didn't want to waste a lot of time preparing a meat meal, which involved

slaughtering an animal and cooking the meat. So they ate dairy. 3) The Israelites didn't want

to be reminded of the golden calf and the subsequent breaking of the first tablets containing the

Ten Commandments by Moses.

The services will include the reading of the Ten Commandments from the Torah and Yizkor

memorial prayers for departed loved ones.

The services will also include a Conversion to Judaism Ceremony for Dr. Henry and

Sharon Gonzales. As part of their conversion, Henry and Sharon will each receive an ali-

yah - they each will be called up to chant the blessings for the reading of the Torah.

Following the services, there will be a DAIRY DESSERT BONANZA. We are asking

congregants to bring a dairy dessert (either home-made or store-bought) for the DAIRY DES-

SERT BONANZA. The following are some possibilities: cheese blintzes, cheese cake,

cream puffs, sour cream cake, Boston cream pie, whipped cream pie, etc. You don't have to

tell me in advance what you are bringing. Just show up with your dairy dessert.

Remember to come at 7:30 P.M. on Wednesday evening, June 4th, to experience a Shavuot

service, Yizkor, a Conversion Ceremony and a Dairy Dessert Bonanza. It should be a very en-

joyable evening - both spiritually and gastronomically.

FROM THE PRESIDENT:

We are reaching the end of this fiscal year

for Temple Shalom. This time next year we

will celebrate our 10th anniversary. It is

hard to believe that so much time has passed. Temple

Shalom has evolved from a dream to reality. Many of

you have been part of Temple Shalom from the begin-

ning and the rest have joined along the way. The other

day I was looking over a list of names and was sur-

prised at how many people have passed through our

doors, some for a short while, others stayed longer.

We have had many things to celebrate and a few occa-

sions when we have cried. Our congregation has

served us well & fulfilled the need of many people.

Our doors are always open to guests & visitors espe-

cially at the High Holidays. Our Judaism compels us

to seek ways to be a family. No one should be on the

outside when we make it so easy to be a part of

Temple Shalom.

I have to tell you we have been working diligently to

move forward with the purchase of the building, but at

this time I do not see it happening. At this writing I am

still negotiating but we may have to rethink our plans.

I ask that we keep the faith and if it is G-d's will it will

come to pass.

I want to thank my Board for a good year & a job well

done.

I wish each of you a good summer. Be safe as you

travel.

We all pray that those who are mentioned on the Mi Sheberach list each Shabbat regain their health and continue to join us. However, Beginning immediately, persons whose names are on the list will be mentioned each Shabbat for a period of 30 days. If you want to extend that mention beyond the 30 days, please contact Rabbi Weissman each month as appropriate. As always, at Shabbat ser-vices you can add a name to the Mi Sheberach list.

Temple Shalom’s Mah Jongg Tournament

Temple shalom just held its 5th mah jongg marathon. Word has spread across the Grand Strand that this is the place to be. We were filled to capacity. More than half the players were non temple members. Many had played before and brought along friends. Everyone had a wonderful time. We started with morning snacks and coffee. After 2 hours of playing we had a delicious Chinese buffet lunch. We played some more and then awarded prizes. Many of the women remarked about the warm and friendly atmosphere of the mah jongg marathon. There was no pressure and everyone felt comfortable. Our committee worked so hard to make sure everyone had a wonderful time. The social room was decorated in a Chinese motif. Lily Ann Revitch, Marlene Paul and Irene Klein did the shopping and set up. Lynn Sostrin guided all the players to their seats and kept everything mov-ing so beautifully. Wendy Margulies baked delicious treats for us to enjoy. Rather than go on and sing our own praises I will share some of the unsolicited comments from our players: A great time...well run Thank you for all your hard work The food was amazing Well organized Lovely afternoon This is the most fun you can have in a day So much fun Wonderful time Had a great time Everything was great I am looking forward to the next marathon in November

Be sure to join us at the next marathon November 4, 2014
