Time: 08/08/10, Sunday, 3:00 PMHosted by Mike ChiuSpeakers: Eric Chang and Big G (Dog G)

Big G, aka Dog G or 大支, is the first TIME Magazine documented Taiwanese hip-hop artist. Taking an excerpt from the page of TIME, March 15, 2004 issue, it stated that the issue of Taiwan’s identity has even infused the island’s pop culture. Dog G was a struggling musician until he penned “Taiwan Song” in which he raps not in Mandarin but in Taiwanese: “Those without the fear of losing, they are the true spirit of Taiwan; those who don’t agree, get out!” Dog G, whose best selling single tells listeners to “act Taiwanese, speak Taiwanese, and to stand up and proclaim they are Taiwan-ese!”, says he wrote that song because he wanted people to stop being ashamed of being Taiwanese.

Under the new pro-China regime, Dog G has continued to write and rap against social injustice, government corruption and the dangerous games that current Taiwanese government is playing with China, i.e. ECFA. His music and his pro-Taiwan style has inspired many other Taiwanese hip-hop and rap performers in Taiwan writing and singing about this beautiful island nation.

Eric Chang is an inspiring 2nd generation Taiwanese American born in the US (or an “ABT” - America-Born Taiwanese) who has traveled to Taiwan more than 10 years ago in search of his root while pursuing his PhD in Taiwan. He can be spot-ted in countless democratic movement demonstrations. In an interview with FTV, he said, “...Young people in Taiwan have to stand up and fight for your rights. Taiwan is now a relatively democratic country, but have ‘YOU’ thought about why it is so democratic? And how much sacrifice was made?” His willingness to speak up and fight for the rights of Taiwanese people and Taiwan can be witnessed by one of his

many famous demonstra-tion of PRC officials who refuses to recognize Tai-wan’s independence and continues to set foot in Taiwan.

Although Eric is just one of many Taiwanese Americans in Taiwan pres-ently, his action and his unwavering pursuit of equality, justice, liberty and full democracy in Taiwan will continue to to inspire and garner support from young Taiwanese in Taiwan and many more who care about the future of this island nation.

Understanding Science Seminar Series (XIII)

Date: 09/19/2010 (Sunday) 2PMTopic: A Touch of Signal ProcessingSpeaker: Tsi-Shung Sun (retired Defense Engi-neer)Place: TACC AuditoriumSignal processing refers to any method of manipulating raw signals or data collected from any kind of sensor or observation to achieve certain objective. The objective may concern removal of noise and interferences, extrac-tion of useful information, detection of hidden patterns, etc. Its practice is very common in the natural world; human beings and animals use it through their sensing organs to communicate and to explore surrounding environments. As a technology, signal processing becomes a crucial compo-nent in modern industrialization, used in such applications (but not exclusively) as machine automation, robotics, radar, communication, smart weapons, forensic investiga-tion, security systems, rendering of visual and audio data for entertainment consumption, etc. Some investment pro-fessionals even try to apply it to pick winning stocks. The scientific foundation of this technology encompasses many fields, including mathematics, statistics, neural science, digital computing, artificial intelligence, etc. Advanced

signal processing in general involves rigorous rules and complex paradigms, but sometimes it can be just a work of art. In this talk, the speaker will discuss a number of inter-esting, easy-to-understand signal processing examples, with the intent that at the end if the audience cannot take away a vague idea about this subject at least they can enjoy an en-tertaining moment.are Taiwan National University Alumni Association in San Diego, S.D. Association of Taiwanese American Physicians and Pharmacists, and Forever Young Society.Tsi-shung Sun was born in Tamshui in 1941, graduated from National Taiwan University in 1964 with a degree in physics. He earned a Ph.D. degree in the same field in 1974 from University of Waterloo, which is located in a small Canadian college town now better known as the birthplace of Blackberry Smartphone. After coming to the United States, Dr. Sun has worked for several private institutes and defense companies, mostly on R&D projects. In the first de-cade of his professional career, he was involved mainly in research of surface science for industrial applications, and in the last two decades he was involved in projects to devel-op signal processing technology for defense applications. Retired in 2003, Dr. Sun and his wife moved to Escondido in late 2009.

The subtitle of this book, Gods, Demigods, and Human Ancestry: The Evidence of Alien DNA, summarizesthe content and conclusion out of several decades of research the author has devoted to. Came froma Jewish family, the author once mentioned that his interest in this subject came mainly due to anincident regarding the interpreta-tion of the transcripts in Genesis, the first book in the Old Testa-ments, that happened in a Sunday school class he attended when he was a child. Based on the mythologies and epics found in ancient Mesopotamia, the author described in details the stories recorded in Genesis and compared their overlapping similarities. From the many Earth Chronicles books he published during the last three decades or more, we could also understand, although unconventionally, the principles of the western religions, particularly the divinity concepts of the Jewish religion and Christianity.

Because of the research and development activities of the DNA, leading to the understanding of the related genetic code, the author of this book believes that the DNA investigation could be used toidentify the offspring of human and gods, or demigods. He has pointed out that a skeleton which is still preserved in the British Museum of Natural History in London could have belonged to a demigod who had lived a few thousands of years before. This more than 4,000 years old skeleton excavated in an ancient cemetery in Ur (located in the present Iraq) is generally believed to belong to a member of the royal family, a queen, of the first dynasty in Ur.

Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance is a mem-oir by President Barack Obama. It was first published in 1995 as he was preparing to launch his political career, five years after being

elected the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review in 1990.The autobiographical narrative tells the story of the life of Obama up to his entry in Harvard Law School. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Obama, Sr. of Kenya, and Ann Dunham of Wich-ita, Kansas, who had met as students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Obama’s parents separated when he was two years old and divorced in 1964. The book “may be the best-written memoir ever produced by an American politician,” wrote Time.
