SPOTLIGHTThe Blue Ribbon honor roll was released in February by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The awards program, sponsored by Sam’s Club®, recognizes companies for their success, innovation, and contributions to economic growth and free enterprise. The award is designed to spotlight businesses with fewer than 250 employees and revenues of less than $20 million. This year’s 100 Blue Ribbon winners were selected from a record number of nationwide applicants evaluated in four key areas: strategic planning, employee development, community involvement, and customer service.

Chamber members BrandHoot, Custom Alarm, CWS, Inc, Domaille Engineering, LLC and Xylo Technologies Inc., claimed five of the spots on the prestigious list of top 100 small businesses in the United States.

“While our economy still struggles to reach its full potential, small businesses like our Blue Ribbon Award winners have continued to act as examples of the resilience, ingenuity, and opportunity at work in the free enterprise system,” U.S. Chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue said. “Times can be tough, but these businesses have proven that they can be too. And by taking risks, watching out for their employees, and giving back to their communities, they’ve shown that success is achievable.”

BrandHoot, the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2014 Business of the Year, is a first-time Blue Ribbon award winner. “These awards are a testament to the innovative service and quality we provide. It’s been great publicity for our business, but it doesn’t change anything about how we operate. Even if we aren’t winning any awards, we will continue focusing on our values,” Nate Nordstrom, BrandHoot founder, shared.

Domaille Engineering is receiving the award for the second year in a row. “It is always good to be recognized for performing well,” said Domaille Engineering President Tim Kanne. “As a global company, all our revenues come from outside Rochester. However, we continue to add talented people that we are finding locally. Obviously Rochester is doing something right to have this talent pool here.”

Xylo Technologies, a three-time Blue Ribbon award winner and the 2014 Midwest Regional Finalist, echoes Kanne’s observations. CEO Dharani Ramamoorthy, considers the awards “a vital tool in recognizing the achievements made by dedicated and passionate individuals and businesses in Rochester. It is a platform for us and other small businesses like ours to attract and retain the finest talent in the industry.”

CWS is also a repeat winner of the Blue Ribbon award this year. “Receiving this award for the fourth consecutive year highlights our continued success in making a positive impact on this community and we are very grateful for the recognition. We will be able to both learn from this experience as well as show our new and existing clients that our hard work and their feedback have paid off!” noted Alan DeKeyrel, President of CWS.

When regional finalists were announced on March 18, Melissa Brinkman, CEO of Custom Alarm, was thrilled to learn her company was named the 2015 Midwest Regional Finalist. This is the second year in a row this honor has been won by a local Rochester area business. As the Midwest Regional Finalist, Custom Alarm stood out among companies from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin for their exceptional business practices and community involvement.

“This is an honor to really be recognized as one of the top companies in the U.S. It gives our business credibility, and is especially important when we are interacting with people, customers, and potential customers that may not know who we are. To be able to say that we have been recognized not once, but four times as a top 100 company by the U.S. Chamber, that is significant,” Brinkman said.

According to Brinkman, success with this award “is really about what you are doing to have a strong, stable company that is focused on growing and providing opportunities to its employees and giving back to the community. These are important keys to any successful business model.”

The 100 Blue Ribbon Award winners and seven Regional Finalists will be recognized at the 11th Annual America’s Small Business Summit, June 8 – 10 in Washington, D.C. During the summit, one regional finalist will be named the DREAM BIG Small Business of the Year and take home the $10,000 cash prize! Brinkman looks forward to attending the summit this year. “There is such electric energy and vast opportunities to network with various types of other small businesses from around the country. It is truly an inspiring and energizing event and the opportunity to be in our nation’s capital is very motivating. It is always good to learn about other business models and structures,” she shared.

“[The Blue Ribbon awards are a] source of encouragement that will help us lay out a comprehensive game plan to grow jobs and increase economic activity strengthening the economic foundations shared by all industries, as well as develop Rochester’s key industry clusters,” said Ramamoorthy. DeKeyrel also recognizes the impact of the award. “Small businesses have a huge role in helping communities achieve economic growth. Having this many award winners in Rochester signifies a commitment to improving our community through entrepreneurial development and supporting existing small business ventures. By producing more jobs and developing an educated and skilled workforce, small businesses will improve infrastructure, quality of life, business climate, and ensure economic prosperity,” DeKeyrel stated.

“The businesses representing the Chamber are symbolic of the strength of our membership and the quality of businesses our community offers. These winners showcase the best of the best in entrepreneurship across the country. As a Chamber, we are proud of their accomplishments and are thrilled to have a Midwest Regional Finalist representing Rochester’s region,” concluded Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce President Rob Miller.

MedCity Foundation was opened in March 2014 in Rochester by Kristina Hesby in memory of

her father, Dr. Ralph Wright-Peterson who passed away from leukemia in 1995. Mrs. Hesby had been a supporter of national organizations, such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for over 10 years, however felt that there was need in her own community and wanted to give back, “as I would host events and put on fundraisers, I began to hear local stories of patients and their families affected by blood cancers right in our community and I started to wonder how I could help people in Rochester specifically. I was amazed there wasn’t anything currently in our community to support this group of patients and that’s when the MedCity Foundation was born,” Mrs. Hesby wrote.

With a mission to support patients in Rochester battling blood cancers, MedCity Foundation provides financial support to permanent as well as temporary residents in our community. Financial needs of these patients range from assisting with hospital bills, co-pays for outpatient treatment, to travel and lodging assistance. The blood cancers include leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, and because of the unique treatment needs of these patients, if they are not from the area, they are living in our community for an average of 3-6 months if not more than one year!

Thanks to generous partnerships with local hotels, we are able to provide discounted lodging rates, as well as gift certificates for gas and food that are provided through individual donations. We also have a support group focusing on patients that have been diagnosed in the last 6 months. This support

group gives patients and their family members an opportunity to connect with others in the community that have recently heard the same news, “you have cancer.”

As a 100% volunteer-led organization, we rely heavily on our board of directors, which is actually a working board, as well as volunteers to help keep our programs running. We hope that as we move into our second year as an organization we can partner with more businesses to provide services to patients and embrace those that are making our community their temporary home.

If you are interested in getting involved or would like any additional information, please visit us online at www.medcityfoundation.org or contact us at [email protected] and 507-261-6708.

A WORD OF ADVICE:EDITORIALS EXPERT ARTICLES

LOCAL LEADERSa word from

April 2015 | www.RochesterMNChamber.com the chamber ADVANTAGE8 9

2015 marks the 9th annual Help Make Rochester A Litter Bit Better! event. Each year, thousands of volunteers collect litter from across Rochester. Together in the past 8 years, these individuals, service groups, businesses, neighbors, and families have worked together to remove over 95 tons

of litter from the community. Participants in the event build community ties and reinforce a strong sense of community pride. The ultimate goal of the program is to beautify the city and prevent water pollution by eliminating litter-causing behavior in the City of Rochester.

The initiative got started in 2006 when two concerned citizens proposed a city-wide litter clean-up event to Mayor Ardell Brede and the Chamber of Commerce. The Mayor brought together a team of organizations that coordinated the first Help Make Rochester A Litter Bit Better! event in 2007. In-kind donations of time, goods, and services, as well as, cash donations by generous Rochester businesses and individuals allow this event to thrive year after year.

The number of people volunteering their time to A Litter Bit Better! is impressive. Individuals from all walks of life participate each year. More than 3,000 volunteers in 2014 picked up litter at 237 collection sites that covered 5,106 acres of land in Rochester. These efforts resulted in 24,360 pounds of litter being removed from the environment in 2014.

YOUR BUSINESS CAN HELP MAKE ROCHESTERA LITTER BIT BETTER! APRIL 18-25, 2015 PICK A LOCATION, PICK A DATE, & PICK IT UP!CALLING ALL ROCHESTER BUSINESSES! Do you recognize the need for and desirability of a clean and livable Rochester? Are you committed to preventing pollution? Many businesses are already doing a great job of managing their waste, but your help is still need in the annual Help Make Rochester A Litter Bit Better! clean-up event.

Volunteers, participating alone or with a group, are encouraged to collect litter in Rochester anytime during that week. Trash and recycling bags are provided, all you need to do is pick a location, pick a date, and pick it up! If you select and register a private location, like your business, you will be responsible for your own litter disposal. For some businesses, participating in a pick-up session isn’t an option so they choose to make a monetary donation to the cause. Cash donations are used to cover garbage bags, poster printing, pledge card printing, postage, and more.

HELP MAKE ROCHESTER A LITTER BIT BETTER! THE WEEK OF APRIL 18-25, 2015

Open enrollment is that time period when employees can make changes to their benefits without a qualifying event. Whenever your time period is, a well-planned open enrollment will help the process go smoother for everyone.

Start planning early. This can be as soon as you’ve completed your last year’s open enrollment. What went well and what didn’t? Start thinking about changes coming for next year. Determine what options best fit your business goals and employee pool.

Develop a plan. What are your dates for the enrollment period? Create a checklist of all tasks. How much lead-time will be needed for changing plans or even changing vendors or carriers? Do guides and reference materials need to be more effective? Do you need to communicate underutilized benefits differently or are they not a fit for your organization? Be aware of benefits and law changes (PPACA) and any notifications that are required such as Employer CHIP notices, The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act, and Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC).

Communicate early and often. Employees should hear about their benefits throughout the year, not just at enrollment time. Provide the education they need to make wise health care decisions. These items should include the cost to the employee and the employer (plan value), coverage information, changes to plans, comparisons to previous year’s plans and current options. Being honest and open can help prepare them for significant changes that may take place.

Communicate through multiple methods. This may include face-to-face, company intranet, printed materials, and bulletin boards. Make use of technology, such as a Human Resources Information System (HRIS), that can be accessed anywhere, anytime.

Set clear expectations and deadlines. Then be clear what actions you need employees to take and when. Give them as much notice as possible to prepare and collect needed information. They will need time to weigh their options, make informed choices and ask questions. Other Items. Remind your employees of 401K or other retirement programs during the year. Open enrollment is also a great time to remind employees to update their dependents, beneficiaries, addresses and phones numbers.

Communicating the value of your benefits and educating your employees on their options will help them get the most from their benefits and appreciate what your company is doing for them. And, you’ll gain the satisfaction that comes from a successful enrollment campaign.

Employees of the DoubleTree of Rochester Downtown, along with their family members, pitched in last year by volunteering to help make Rochester A Litter Bit Better. Stephanie Sailstad, DoubleTree Front Office Manager, spoke on the big turnout of previous years. “We are hoping for an even bigger [turnout] this year! [DoubleTree] has signed up for three locations this year, and we are excited to continually participate in this important initiative in Rochester,” Sailstad said.

Community members proudly display gathered litter from last year’s event.

For Rochester regional women, it did not take Beyoncé to remind them “Who Run the World.” On Wednesday, March 18th, women leaders each invited an emerging leader to take part in the Coaching

Up Our Bench event. Fifty seven women gathered for intentional conversations about the opportunities and challenges faced in our area by women leaders.

Although it didn’t look like a typical networking event, women left with relationships and knowledge. “I was able to meet so many accomplished women, which gives me hope as a woman who aspires to be in business. It was such a great opportunity to recognize success in so many career fields,” Sara Albertelli said.

There may be stark facts that women face in the realm of leadership, but that fueled the room to work even harder to keep the discourse

about workforce equity on the table. Kelly Corbin of Olmsted County Public Health said, “It’s inspiring to be in a room full of women leaders and see the potential this community has to create equity for women and to lead the way for the next generation [of women].” These facts came in the form of quizzes and conversation for the attendees. “Women in Leadership was very interactive and motivating. I walked away feeling even more empowered!” Brittany Wilson of Realty Growth, Inc. said.

As the Chamber continues to grow and offer events to meet the needs of our membership, Women in Leadership will continue to be a staple offering through our Workforce Development and Education department. With a roundtable that meets the third Friday of each month, women have an opportunity to create strong bonds with a group of women who meet consistently to network and discuss both the challenges and solutions women find while navigating the professional world. Most importantly, the Women in Leadership programming will continue to offer supportive programming for women in all walks of their professional lives. “I really enjoyed hearing about all the amazing things the women in our community are involved in and doing. I am still trying to break into the workforce...and talking with these women has been encouraging,” Jennifer LaRoche said.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WITH THE STATE BUDGET SURPLUS?Minnesota Management and Budget Commissioner Myron Frans spoke during the February Eggs & Issues event on

the budget surplus and Governor Mark Dayton’s budget priorities focusing on Health and Human Services, Public Safety, Courts, and Corrections, and a Child Care and Dependent Tax Credit. A large percentage of the budget plan presented by Frans will go toward fixing Minnesota’s achievement gap by increasing K-12 education funding. “It’s important to help every

student succeed,” Frans stated pointing out the valuable resource this will amount to in return. Local legislators were all in agreement on the importance of education funding on all levels, including higher education.

While the state budget technically has a surplus, legislators and other state officials are quick to point out that the surplus may be fleeting as ongoing costs may consume much of it. There was lively discussion among the panel of local legislators about how the surplus should be used. Some thought it should be used to support worthwhile programs and others wanted to consider other options, such as rebates or refunds. The various options will be sorted out as the legislature nears late April and early May when the legislature must vote on the budget. The legislators emphasized that any proposed tax cut or program must fit into a balanced budget.

The day included lunch at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and several breakout sessions. The sessions included a Local Officials Roundtable, Southeast Minnesota Regional Issues Forum, Inside Politics, and Plans for the Future featuring DMC, the Rochester Airport, Journey to Growth and the City of Rochester. Breakout sessions were well attended and full of discussion. Several groups of attendees also met with legislators regarding taxes, workforce and transportation issues.
