I took over asleader in charge ofthe Youth Club inearly October 91,the membership atthe time consistedof a round 12, nowin mid November 91,the membership isexceeding 30 whichis very encouragingfor the Youth Club, the community and ofcourse myself. Theage range is fromaround 10 to 21years with both maleand female members.

The Youth Club isopen each Sundayfrom 6.30pm to 10pm,the day and time mayalter occasionallyas I am a shiftworker, . but I doalter my shiftsaround to lessenthe inconvenience tomembers. If I dochange a day Iconfirm this wi thJohn Holliday so asnot to clash withany other - users ofthe hall.

Facilities include asnooker and pooltable, which were ina bad s ta te when Itook over the clubbut I am glad to saythat both tableshave been fully .recovered at a totalcost of £300: £150grant from -ClevelandYouth & Community

I was approached bythe Village Artsteam (Jozefa) whowa s as ked to c r ea tea Santa's Grotto forthe Christmas Fayre.Between Jozefa, myself and the children of the YouthClub the beautifulGro t to was created, which was veryrewarding to me tosee my Youth Clubmembers getting actively involved insuch a t worthwhileproject and creditmust go out to eachand everyone of _t hemwho was involved.

I am trying to makethings better forthe hall as well asthe Youth Clubitself. I am a bigbeliever in keepingthings Clean, Neat &Tidy. I have startedto voice my opinionson that, and justhope that othergroups tha t us e thehall can followsuit.

And the final word 'always goes down tocost. I am pleasedto say that theYouth Club does notget charged for theuse of the hall, buton the other handnor does the clubget any funds fromany ou tside source. We are totally selffunded, our moneycomes · only from thetuck and membership(lOp per person), soas you can imagineit takes a long timeto build up ourresources.

North Skelton's oldest inhabitant isstill living life to the full, eventhough he has recently beenhospitalised for a fortnight andtold to take it easy whendischarged.

One of 8 children born in thene.i zru.ourLng village of Brotton 94yenp; ago , Bob Laker lef t schoo1just ar cer his 13th birthday.

His first job was with a localmarket gardener, and even thGughthis was only for 2 years, gardeninghas played an important part of hislife. But for a 15 year old ladthere was more money to be earned atone of the local ironstone mines, and more leisure time to help thelocal farmers with the harvest, turnip "snagging" etc. But miningwas a high risk occupation with manyinjuries and fatalities, Bob was noexception and when he was badlyinjured at Lumpsey Mine Brotton hedecided to surface and soughtempl.oymentat Skinningrove IronWorks. After a couple of years atthe ' Grove' he was called in to theregular army in which he saw activeservice on the Somne in France, coming through the First World War

. unscathed. This 5 year engagementended in Northern Ireland, keepingan eye on IRA terrorists.

Back in civvy street he went back tothe Iron Works where his stockyardduties, and later on the Hot Bank ofthe li t t Le mill, saw his eventual, retirement at the age of 66 years.

After a year of jobbing about onfarms and digging numerous gardens,he decided it was time he had a"proper job" a gain, and as -he livesin North Skel ton the obvious placeof employment was Tees Components, -aLight engineering firm on the oldmine site in the village. Sincestarting there he has become alegend, making 2 birthdayappearances on television, thisgiving him the opportunity to showhis prowess as a singer, dancer andreciter of monologues. Bob says therecipe for his longevity 1:S plenty

of hardwork and being a non-smokerand a moderate drinker.

His eyes still shine with pride atthe mention of his sister, AnnieLeeks, who recently died in thevillage after reaching her lOOthbirthday.

Whilst . not a religious man, Bobspeaks with some affinity of hisdays in the church football team andthe church choir, the late WillCarver and Tommy Batterbee are twosingers he holds in high esteem andhe will often give you a renditionof one of their "old tyme"favouri tes.

Bob is the epitome of contentment, apart from his work he pays regularvisits to a daughter in Bratton, andwhen the mood takes him he will takethe bus to Guisborough for a haircutand do a bit of shopping, but as along time neighbour I still think heis happiest chopping through a backyard full of wood for his fire ordigging sombodies garden.

LONG MAY HIS FIRE BURN!

But most popular isthe "pop" song likeGary Glitter's"Another Rock n'Roll Christmas" and-- ..Mud's "Lonely ThisChristmas". And notforgetting old favourites like JohnnyMathis' "When aChild is Born" and"Walking i n a WinterWonderland" .

When James left the stage theaudience demanded more - chantingthe chorus of "Sit Down".Eventually they reappeared to playabout five more songs including"How Was It For You" and"Goldmother".
