argued on the drive about who had to hold the oversized and cumbersome hat box.

Judy’s parents were not eager to have their daughter marry right out

of high school, so to accommodate their wishes she decided to attend Western Washington University for a

year. She then worked at the store for a year before marrying Alvin. Alvin, a Swedish Baptist, proposed to Judy on Easter in 1948 in front of several

of her girlfriends. They married in May of ’49, at which time Judy be-came a farmer’s wife. She was deter-

mined to learn all she could about farming and jumped feet first into feeding the animals, milking the cows

and driving the tractor. They started off on Alvin’s family farm, but after two years they were able to purchase

their own which included 50 Guern-sey cows and 1,600 chickens. Their farm was designated with a Dairy of

Merit award. One of Judy’s many duties was egg collecting along with gardening and raising a family. Alvin

and Judy had five children: Craig, Guy, Ann, Don, and Karl. (Continue on page 2)

(Continued from page 1) In addition to her own children, their home was of-ten filled with other children that they took in for extended periods of time. During her time on the farm she was the president of the Whatcom Dairy Wives’ Club as well as the Washington State presi-dent for a year.

Alvin changed jobs after working for What-com Farmers and in 1969 went to work for Oltman Insurance. In 1972, Alvin and Judy bought a cabin on Sandy Point in Ferndale where they spent most weekends. A year later, their youngest son, who was 14, passed away in a tractor accident. This was a terrible blow to the family and not long after they got rid of the chickens at the farm. In her grief Judy went to work at the Lynden Department Store as a way to cope. She worked there until it closed, after which time she opened a shoe store on Front Street called The Shoe Box, that she co-owned for 10 years. They sold the farm to one of their sons in 1977 and added on to their Sandy Point cabin where they moved after several years of living in the city of Lynden. Their home on the water proved a won-derful place for hosting family and church get-togethers for many years, at which time they sold the home and moved back to Lynden in 2002. Their oldest son passed away in 2004 from cancer and Ju-dy lost her husband in 2011. She misses her two children and husband who have gone on to be with the Lord but has great courage and hope that she will see them again.

Judy was very involved over the years with her church families, Sunrise and Grace Baptist. Al-vin and Judy were youth leaders for over ten years when they were first married and raising a family, often offering hay rides and picnics on the farm. They hosted bibles studies, fellowships and waffle suppers. Judy was also part of a singing trio for many years at Grace. Among her many talents, Judy is a gifted gardener, seamstress, and quilter. She made and sold wedding dresses and brides maids dresses and made over 100 quilts. She made each of her grandchildren a quilt when they graduated from high school. She also knitted, crocheted, and did counted cross-stitch. She freely admits that she is a cat lady and misses her cats, Mr. Moe and Missy that she had to give up when she came to Lynden Manor last March. Judy has 16 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild with one more on the way.

Shingles: Stay Informed The shingles vaccine and booster is currently on back order from the man-ufacturer. Rite Aid and Safeway in Lynden are hoping to get it stocked in the next couple months. Stayed tuned for more information.

What is shingles?

Shingles (herpes zoster) is a painful skin rash caused by Varicella Zoster, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Once you've had chickenpox, the virus remains in your body in a dormant or inactive stage. If the virus be-comes active again you may get shingles. Age, increased stress, and prob-lems with the immune system may increase your chances of getting shin-gles.

The shingles rash usually occurs on one side of the body, in a line along a nerve pathway. The rash begins as a tingling in the area then forms a cluster of small red spots that often blister. The rash can be painful. Shingles rashes can last 2-4 weeks, but in some people the nerve pain can last for months. For most people, the pain associated with the rash lessens as it heals. Other symptoms of shingles can include fever, headache, chills and upset stom-ach. In some people, severe complications include pneumonia, blindness, hearing problems, brain inflammation, and even death.

You cannot catch shingles from another person with shingles; however a person who has never had chicken pox or been vaccinated for chicken pox could get chicken pox from someone with shingles.

Shingles is far more common in people 50 years of age and older. At least 1 million people a year in the United States get shingles. 1 in 3 adults will de-velop shingles in their lifetime.

What is the shingles vaccine?

The shingles vaccine has been proven as the most effective method to re-duce the risk of developing shingles. It can also reduce complications such as long-term pain caused by shingles. There are currently two vaccines available, Shingrix® and Zostavax®.

Who should receive a shingles vaccine?

The CDC recommends all healthy adults 50 years of age and older receive 2 doses of Shingrix® (recombinant zoster vaccine or RZV) 2-6 months apart regardless of a past episode of herpes zoster or receipt of Zostavax® (zoster vaccine live or ZVL).

Who should not get the shingles vaccine?

You should not get the shingles vaccine if you:

• Are allergic to the vaccine or any of its ingredients

• Have a weakened immune system (cancer, certain immune disorders)

• Have undergone cancer treatment (radiation or chemotherapy)

• Take high doses of steroids by injection or by mouth (Info from Walgreens)
