Industrial Tourism Yokohama is home to engine development and production for a
major automotive manufacturer, Nissan Motor. The company's first
production line was established in Yokohama in 1935. Group
visitors to the plant can arrange to tour the engine assembly line.
From 2003, the original Nissan headquarters (Yokohama No. 1
Plant) was returned to its original specifications and opened to the
public as the Yokohama Factory Guest Hall and Nissan Engine
Museum, which features displays about Nissan's history and
engines.

Description
There are few museums in the world with this level of presentation
about silk. A series of exhibits look at the life of silkworms, how
cocoons are spun into silk threads and the silk dyeing processes.
Additional exhibits look at the changes in Japanese silk fashion
and the use of silk in various ethnic costumes. Visitors can also
learn about the history of the silk farming and silk garments.
Recommended Learning Program, Event or Workshop
1. In the loom weaving workshop, try your hand at weaving fabric
from a single silk thread. 2. Observation silkworms and experience
spinning its cocoon. 3. Take part in ongoing classes to make
kumihimo (Japanese braids), tsumami kanzashi (folded-fabric
petal flowers used to decorate Japanese hair ornaments), floss silk,
and miniature dolls from cocoons. Items 2 and 3 require a
reservation and payment of a fee (materials included). There is a
limit on the number of participants. Please contact the Silk
Museum for additional details.

Industrial Tourism Yokohama Shoyu Co. was established in 1937 and is the only soy
sauce maker in Yokohama today. The company is dedicated to
crafting its classic, preservative-free and richly flavored soy sauce

from raw materials to production line, in an easy-to-understand

Description
This hands-on museum was designed to promote enjoyable
understanding of state-of-the-art science and technology. The six
museum zones (Aerospace, Ocean, Transportation, Daily Life
Discovery, Environment/Energy and Technology Quest) display
actual items such as rockets, large-scale models such as the
Shinkai 6500 (a deep sea submersible research vessel) and various
kinds of life-sized and detailed models. At the popular Trial Square,
visitors can sign up to design, fabricate and operate various types
of vehicles.

At 3D_CAD WORKS STUDIO_Pro, participants can design and
operate one of four vehicles (ferry, jet, deep-sea submersible or
helicopter) using the studio's original software. At Future Factory,
participants choose 3D digital parts from a special table and build
a virtual 3D vehicle by cooperating with other participants. The
Sky Walk Adventure simulator allows participants to experience
full-fledged operation of a helicopter. The Earth Rescue area of the
Environment/Energy zone is another popular exhibit.

Scientific Technology
Nature Silk merchant Sankei Hara created this 18,000m2 Japanese-style
garden in 1906. The garden grounds hold 17 historically
significant buildings brought from Kyoto, Kamakura and other
locations around the country, including a three-storied pagoda.
Sankeien presents various beautiful faces throughout the year due
to its seasonal horticulture, which includes many plum and cherry
blossoms. It can also be enjoyed as a museum of Japanese
architecture and culture, with various displays of Japanese art,
antique everyday articles and a tea ceremony room. The essential
Japanese nature of the park makes it a highly popular destination
in the foreign community.

can experience an authentic tea ceremony (including sweets) for

Nature Zoorasia is divided into seven zones: Asian Tropical Forest,
Subarctic Forest, Oceanian Grassland, Central Asian Highland,
Japanese Countryside, Amazon Jungle and African Tropical
Rainforest) featuring representative animals, plants and cultural
references. Skillfully arranged plants and rocks add to give a
realistic atmosphere. The zoo is home to 400 animals of 70 species,
and the collection is focused on rare animals such as the okapi and
the douc langur (Zoorasia has Japan's only examples of these
langurs).

Nature Kanazawa Zoo is home to rare large herbivores, koalas and other
animals featured in four continent-based theme areas (the
Americas, Eurasia, Oceania and Africa). The daily Wakuwaku
Time program provides interaction with animals. Other attractions

Culture & Arts The Hikawamaru is a representative example of the state-of-the-art
passenger-cargo ships that traversed the Pacific in the 1930s. This
particular ship sailed between Seattle and Japan and once hosted
Charlie Chaplin as a passenger. During WWII, Hikawamaru was
used as a navy hospital. The ship was designated as a Tangible
Cultural Asset by the city in 2003.

The Hikawamaru was restored to its original glory as a passenger
and cargo ship using historical documents. Visitors can tour the
first-class art deco dining room, smoking salon and stateroom and
