  • Teaching Philosophy Why active Latin? Communicating in Latin requires students to

    engage with language concepts in an authentic and intentional way, which paves the way for a rich and genuine experience of literature.

    Why signs? How do we teach students to think in Latin?

    One way is to teach them to think in concepts before they worry about words. The sign language facilitates this.

  • Goal: Conceptual Learning Composition (Example #1): Students produce Latin that gives each word a

    particular role

    Puella = a (The girl is the star of the show) Narcissus = s (Narcissus is receiving the direct

    impact of some action)

    Love = i E ("love" happens in the present; the star is doing it)

    Puella Narcissum amat.

  • Goal: Conceptual Learning Composition (Example #2): Students produce Latin that gives each word a

    particular role

    Puella = j (something is originating from the girl)

    Narcissus = a (Narcissus is the star of the show)

    Love = e R ("love" was happening in the past; it was being done to the star)

    Translation: Students recognize the conceptual force of

    each word

    Students understand the way that concepts interact to create meaning
