A DAY WITH YOU you take something as simple as a book and turn it into an adventure with the family! With this book, Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown, you take a trip to a farm and interact with the animals there! If you have a farm available, this would be a great time to visit. Children young and old love the farm. There are so many things to see, hear and smell (remember, even bad smells make for good memories!). As a mom I love this book for the engaging pictures that we can talk about as well as the sweet story that takes you through a whole day and ends quietly at night. A perfect bedtime book. Or any time book! As a Speech Language Pathologist, I love the great descriptions like “golden flying horse,” “sweet warm hay” and “old black cat.” There are many animals to name, plus baby animals like puppies, kittens, a foal, a piglet, a pinkie (that’s a baby mouse), a calf and a kid (baby goat). You could talk about a baby bat (a pup) and a gosling. You can talk about times of the day: sunrise, morning, day time, afternoon, dusk, evening and night. You can talk about and make the many animal sounds. A DAY WITH YOU

you take something as simple as a book and turn it into an adventure with the family! With this book, Big Red Barn by

Margaret Wise Brown, you take a trip to a farm and interact with the animals there! If you have a farm available, this would be a great time to visit. Children

young and old love the farm. There are so many things to see, hear and smell (remember, even bad smells make for

good memories!). As a mom I love this book for the engaging pictures that we can talk about as well as the sweet story

that takes you through a whole day and ends quietly at night. A perfect bedtime book. Or any time book!

As a Speech Language Pathologist, I love the great descriptions like “golden flying horse,” “sweet warm hay” and “old black

cat.” There are many animals to name, plus baby animals like puppies, kittens, a foal, a piglet, a pinkie (that’s a baby mouse), a calf and a kid (baby goat). You

could talk about a baby bat (a pup) and a gosling. You can talk about times of the day: sunrise, morning, day time,

afternoon, dusk, evening and night. You can talk about and make the many animal sounds. It is filled with wonderful

vocabulary like weather vane, pile, hoe, throat and clutch of eggs. Plus, the story is a poem. You can work on rhyming words: hay, play, away, today! I love it!

You guys are going to have a great day!

Farms and farm animals can provide hours of entertainment for children. This story is filled with animals and interesting details.

TRY TO USE DOUBLE ADJECTIVES!

2. CRAFT TIME - F INGER PUPPETS

Materials needed - small strips of construction paper, tape, glue and the animal pictures

Directions - If your child is able, have your child cut the animal pictures (if not, you cut

out the animals). Take the 2.5 inch strips of paper and wrap them around you child’s

finger and tape to secure. Glue one animal to each ring. This is a good task for most

aged children. This would also be a good time to make and color a barn. I used an

inside out box and cut the bottom off.

3 . OUTSIDE GAME - ANIMAL TAG

Materials - animal pictures stacked in a pile

Directions - Flip over one animal card. Whoever is “it” needs to count for a few seconds (maybe to 5) to let the others get away. Everyone must move and make the sounds of the animal on the card! When someone gets tagged, go back to the pile of animal cards. The person who is now “it” flips the next card and gives everyone a chance to get away! Have fun galloping, waddling and scurrying all over your yard!

Alternate - Flip over the animal card. Then run all over the yard acting like that animal!

4 . SNACK TIME!

Cheese is a great snack when talking about a farm. Remind (or teach) children

that cheese comes from milk and milk comes from a cow! Add in some fresh fruit

and your snack will be complete! Or cottage cheese, peaches and strawberries.

1 . READING TIME

Read the story... it all starts here! This is a calm story that takes you all over a

farm, into the barn, to the cornfield but more importantly into the lives of

farm animals. The story is a delightful poem story with rhyming words

throughout the book. Most pages have the complete rhyme so that you can

pause on each page to talk about what you are reading without breaking the

rhyming sequence.

5. INSIDE PLAY - OUR BARN

Materials - large box or use couch cushions and pillows

Directions - Use the cards and pretend to be the different farm animals.

or

Materials - blocks or a medium sized box decorated like a barn

Directions - Use the finger puppet animals and make a barnyard. Let the

animals have fun in your block barnyard.

6 .ANIMAL MEMORY

Materials - two copies of the animal pictures (pages 8 and 9)

Directions - First cut the pictures out along the lines. Then cut pieces of

construction paper in to 6 pieces. I found that 4 X 4.5 worked great. Glue

pictures on construction paper. Mix up the pictures and turn them upside

down. One person at a time, turn over 2 cards. If they match, you keep

them. If not, flip them back over and it’s the next person’s turn. Some

people choose to play with the rule that when you make a match you go

again.

7 . MORE TO EAT

Mom - write down what you want them to have for lunch or dinner!
