BIOGRAPHY Born in 1943 in Casablanca, Morocco, Marie-Louise Jacquet studied law in Aix-en-Provence and Strasbourg before exclusively devoting her life to organ and musicology. She was awarded diplomas in the virtuosity program of the famous Schola Cantorum in Paris in both interpretation and improvisation, where she was a student of Jean Langlais. In 1969, she was named organist of the celebrated Silbermann organ at the Protestant Church of St. John in Mulhouse; in 1979, she was named assistant organist of the Cavaillé-Coll organ at the Basilica of Saint Clotilde, Paris, where she served with her husband, Jean Langlais. Marie-Louise Langlais has held positions as professor of organ and improvisation at the National Regional Conservatory of Marseille (1974-1987), at the Schola Cantorum (1985-2007) and at the National Regional Conservatory of Paris (1987-2011). In addition, she has served on numerous national and international organ competition juries around the world. In 1992, Marie-Louise Langlais wrote a doctoral thesis in musicology at the Sorbonne on the life and music of Jean Langlais, which was later reworked and published as a book under the title “Ombre et Lumière, Jean Langlais (1907-1991)” by éditions Combre. In 1999, she was awarded a special prize by the Institute of France for this outstanding publication on her late husband’s legacy. In 2009, she published a book on the organ works of Jean-Louis Florentz with éditions Symetrie. A major concert artist, Marie-Louise Langlais has performed throughout North America and Europe since the early 1970s and has recorded for many foreign and French companies. Because of her extensive musicological research, she is in frequent demand for master classes and lec-tures. Her many topics include “The Saint Clotilde Tradition” (Franck, Tournemire and Langlais) and the French organ school from the 1930s. The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Oberlin, Ohio (USA) has invited Marie-Louise Langlais to serve as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Organ for the fall semester of 2012, where she will teach organ and improvisation and give regular master classes. During this time, she will also be touring ________________________________________________________________________________________________________

DEAN’S MESSAGE What do members of the AGO like second best to their role as church musicians? Eating and chatting with other church musicians! Beginning Monday, October 15th and continuing each month (through May) at 12:15 p.m. I invite you to join me for lunch (Dutch treat) as we gather just to chat about our common concerns, goals and problems we face as church musicians. We realize that we all struggle with the same issues in our church music programs whether we are in a large or small church. Perhaps we can be of help to each other through these lunch time conversations. The first Dean’s Lunch of the season will be Monday, October 15, at 12:15 p.m. at Baker’s Crust, 3553 W. Cary Street, Richmond. Free parking is available in the parking lot. Each month we try a different restaurant so we can reach as many members in various areas of the city and surrounding area. Please call a friend, colleague or pastor and invite them to the Dean’s lunch. It is a great way to introduce new people to our AGO Chapter. I look forward to seeing you with the AGO “Lunch Bunch!”

Professional Concerns and Referral Betty Girardeau

Education Concerns Committee We have ten reasons to become certified through the Guild Examination Program. I have shared some reasons last year. Here is another: Prepa-ration is completely flexible. You may study on your own; you may work with a teacher (this is Mary’s method!) ; or you may prepare with a group (if anyone else is preparing for the exam for which you are preparing). I have listened to a cd about preparing for the exams and the announcer states quite clearly we are expected to have to work at the pieces to be learned. However, after you learn the music, you will have some nice pieces at your fingertips to use when needed in your church work. Also, since our Dean mentioned last month about the summer regional conference in Winchester, let me add another comment. If you like to read mysteries, Mark Schweitzer will be one of the speakers. He writes liturgical mysteries set in the mythical town of St. Germaine, NC (outside of Boone-upper north west corner of the state). Here you would meet Sheriff Konig who happens to also be the Episcopal church organist-and he can be a snide character when something at the church displeases him! He also writes, on a typewriter formerly owned by Raymond Chandler, very bad stories to share with his choir each week. You may, as you read any of the eleven books published to date, run into such things as the Polly Wolly Doodle Kyrie, a Pirate service, a clown service, the Jesus-rhymes with cheeses and sneezes- anthem and other such things as the stories unfold. Some titles include: The Organist wore Pumps, The Alto wore Tweed, The Tenor Wore Tap Shoes. Please also welcome the following new members:

Grace Bauson

Grace Baptist Church

Tom Bailey Dual member from St. Peter's by-the-Sea, Bay Shore, NY

Tom Bailey has a long association with the Central Virginia organ scene, having grown up in Hopewell where he be-gan organ lessons with Mrs. Blake, and then from chapter member Ron Davis, in whose Hopewell-Petersburg Choral Society he learned so much about choral music in addition to organ lessons on the old Roosevelt organ at Tabb Street Presbyterian Church. As an organ performance major at VCU, he studied with Larry Robinson for three years, and then took a five year break to study Bach with Anton Heiller in Vienna, Austria. Several years and church jobs later, (Hanover Avenue Christian Church, Richmond; St. James' Episcopal, Richmond as assistant and later interim; Christ Church, Oyster Bay, Long Island) he returned to Richmond as Music Director of Centenary United Methodist, and finished a final two years of organ study at VCU with Ardyth Lohuis. An inner calling for clarity in matters both theological and liturgical, led Tom to Virginia Theological Seminary in Alex-andria, where he graduated in 1993 with an M.Div., not with the intention of ordination, but a clear commitment to

ministry through music. After seminary, he served 6 years at St. Anne's Episcopal in Reston. While there, he relocated the 1951 Aeolian Skinner organ from St. Paul's Episcopal in Richmond, to the Reston Church. From Reston, Tom moved to Brooklyn, NY where he worked at AGO Head-quarters, and served as organist/choirmaster of St. Paul's Episcopal in Carroll Gardens. Five years later he was named music director of Washington Street United Methodist Church in Old Town Alexandria, and served as Dean of the NOVA Chapter of the AGO. At present Tom is Organist and Choirmaster of St. Peter's by~the~Sea Episcopal Church in Bay Shore, Long Island. As retirement nears, he hopes eventually to come back to the Richmond area, where he can reconnect with old and dear friends, as serve as a resource to his parents in Hopewell. ___________________________________________________________________________________________.________________________ DON E. OSHER 50+ CHOIR SEEKS DIRECTOR There is interest among the age 50+ Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members in forming a community choir of Osher members and others from around Richmond. The Osher Institute is part of UR and housed in the School of Professional and Continuing Studies. To do this they are seeking a paid part-time choir director who could also accompany the choir in rehearsals, and a piano accompanist to play during performances. Choir members would have varying levels of experience and the music would be a variety of popular and classical that the group could manage. The UR choral music is available for our use, however I think it would probably work better to have the choir members purchase choral music books and/or sheet music. The choir would meet every 2 weeks for 2 hours each time, during the fall and spring semesters. DID YOU KNOW?

In our monthly travels searching for “organs in strange and interesting places,” we have visited numerous institutions, private homes and man-sions, railroad stations, a cemetery, and even a mental hospital. This month, in our endeavor to feature these little known instruments, our travels take us to the unlikely venue of the Indiana State Penitentiary.

According to newspaper accounts and photographs published in 1940, the Indi-ana State Penitentiary at Michigan City was presented with the gift of a pipe or-gan which was constructed by a prisoner. Shown in the photo at left, with the builder in prison garb seated at the console, the instrument was constructed in the prison workshop. Upon it’s completion it was then installed in the inmate chapel. Cost of materials at the time was reported to be $7,000. Boasting eight ranks of pipe work and a console built from the remains of a discarded Kimball console, the organ served the prison’s religious and educational programs for several decades. Prison records indicated that the organ was removed and dis-carded some time in the 1970’s during a renovation program by the state. It’s final disposition is un-known. A check with the current prison war-den revealed only the information provided in this article. No current employees at the facility were on staff at the time that the organ existed. The unnamed prisoner/builder was released after serving his sen-tence, and it is believed that he has since died. .
