Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those

days; visions were not widespread.

At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in

his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of

the LORD, where the ark of God was. Then the LORD called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I

am!” and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down

again.” So he went and lay down. The LORD called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli,

and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now

Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.

The LORD called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for

you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel,

“Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’” So

Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak,

for your servant is listening.” Then the LORD said to Samuel, “See, I am about to do something in

Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. On that day I will fulfill against Eli all

that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. For I have told him that I am about

to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God,

and he did not restrain them. Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall

not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever.”

Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. Samuel was

afraid to tell the vision to Eli. But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” He said, “Here I

am.” Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more

also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.” So Samuel told him everything and hid

nothing from him. Then he said, “It is the LORD; let him do what seems good to him.”

As Samuel grew up, the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all

Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the LORD.

God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and

the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not know

that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make

them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute

THE DAUGHTERS OF THE KING’S Second Book Study, using Evangelism Without Additives by

Jim Henderson will begin February 11, 2018 in The Juice Bar. If you ordered a book from Mary

Levens, they are here! We are not starting in January due to Annual Meeting and special

speakers. For the first meeting, please read the Introduction—Evangelism Isn’t Normal and Chapter

1—Boldness is Overrated. We will meet the second Sunday in each month this year, except for June,

July and August. Dates maybe adjusted such as May 13th. We will meet on May 20th due to

Mother's Day falling on the 13th. We are very excited that Fergie will be facilitating for us once again

this year! Please join us. If you miss a month, no worries…there are no tests or projects! Just great

discussions, learning and fun!

THE PARISH DISCRETIONARY FUND is one way that church members can help and assist those

in need in our community. On the first Sunday of each month, the loose offerings go to the Parish

Discretionary Fund to help Father Jim reach out to those needing a boost. The next collection is Feb.

4th.

The saints witness to us what the life of faith looks like, lived out in real time, as they challenge us to live out

our own discipleship more fully and fearlessly. In a journey with the saints, we also learn something of our

history as we look at monks, missionaries, prophets, and more, and learn how different people in different places

and times, with different backgrounds and gifts, have taken their place in proclaiming the kingdom of God.

REFLECTION

Over the Christmas holiday, I spent some time in Wilmington, NC. On a whim, I moved there

after college in 1991, never having lived outside of my beautiful bluegrass state of Kentucky. This was

my first exposure to living life as an adult, outside the confines of the college and homestead bubbles,

and it was stunning. I began my first career here, bought my first car here, and was always the

youngest one in the room at my job.

Driving around the town last week, I spotted my old apartments, and the gas station where my

rental trailer used to stand near the Intracoastal Waterway. There’s where I used to work, where my

friends lived, my favorite restaurant, and the old Hardee’s that is now a great Irish pub. As I drove

down Market Street towards 16th Street, I remembered my first legal U-turn, and the traffic light at

which I heard the radio newscast, in 1994, of the end of apartheid in South Africa. And when I

approached the Cape Fear River downtown, I reflected on the outdoor beer garden I used to frequent,

which is now a parking lot.

While remembering times from twenty years ago is nice and reflective and sparks feelings of joy, I

was there to see friends. The bad part – they were all sick, and so our visits never occurred. I then

took a step back and thought about all my coworkers from the mid-90s, and not one of them was still

working at the radio station. The only one I knew was the guy who took my place when I moved

from there.

Feeling a bit dejected, I perked myself up while walking around downtown, falling into the trap

of “they closed my favorite shop,” or “why is there a Starbucks down here?” or “we never did it that

way.” It took me a while to see that the life happening all around me on my brief trip there was now

and new. It wasn’t a relic from years gone by. It didn’t stop time so that 25 years later I could step

back into my museum of ‘new adulthood.’

Once I saw the town with those new eyes, it was startling. The Cape Fear Community College

Performing Arts Center is a beautiful treasure. The new road pattern of Wrightsville Avenue to get to

the beach was smart and made a whole lot more sense than the old way. The new restaurants and

shops downtown, as well as smart growth out near the university, were big draws for new residents.

Everything in our life is on a course heading to the future. This includes church. Things in our

way of life as a faith community change, not just for change’s sake, but to open a door to those who

are new to this life, and embracing a new season of faith, while still holding on to traditions that

grounded us in the first place.
