NEWSLETTER – No.2 – 20th February 2018

Dear Parents,

It is sometimes challenging to find something worthwhile, and sustainable, to do for ourselves during Lent. One suggestion is to have a look at how we participate as a member of our single human family that is equally marvellous, fascinating and perhaps threatening in its diversity. Lent is often a time given over to “holy” words of repentance and promises of self-reform but: “However many words you speak, what good will they do if you do not act on them?” Buddha.

We will begin to grow spiritually, morally and ethically, when we are ready to sincerely embrace the truth and fascination of our differences and welcome the significance of such action in our lives.

Our spirituality is as personal as our breath or our fingerprint. As we move through the forty days of Lent, we might on occasion, surrender freely to the quiet within us, to rediscover the resources and strengths that are there. We might begin to see better and appreciate more, the value of our existence, to see ourselves with more gratitude and respect and to see others in a like manner.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Leonie Young Principal

EDUCATION IN FAITH Term 1 Catholic Social Teaching Focus: Dignity of the Human Person Scripture Focus: Mark 12: 28-31- Love One Another

Lent During the season of Lent we are encouraging and providing opportunities for our students to take some extra ‘time out’ for prayer, reflection, almsgiving. Throughout Lent, we use the purple cloth on our prayer tables. The purple cloth reminds us that it is a season of penance, a time for ‘giving up’ so that we can ‘give away’ what is not essential. In this way we can respond to the needs of others who may have no home, no food, no family, no friends, and hope.

This year’s theme- A Just Future - focuses on humbling and inspiring weekly stories from Nepal, Cambodia, Jordan, Australia,

Mozambique and the Philippines. The theme also connects to our Term 1 Catholic Social Teaching and scripture; Dignity of the Human Person and Love One Another. A great Lenten resource for use at home is the Caritas website - http://www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion Please find the timetable for the Lenten Prayer Service and Holy Week.

Catholic Social Teachings This term we are focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching of Dignity of the Human Person. Each person is made in the image of God. As Christians we celebrate that God has created each person uniquely. We are joined together as a family and that God loves each of us equally. We experience God through our family and friends and The Church. This means we have to treat people with respect and fairness.

Way of the Cross This year classes will be praying the Stations of the Cross during Lent, similar to how it was approached last year. The Indigenous Stations have been set up in the Administration foyer and parents are welcome to visit & pray during Lent. Classes will also visit the church during Lent; exploring the beautiful Way of the Cross presented at the back. On our meditation mornings, the Way of the Cross will be played in the Boardroom for parents to attend.

SCHOOL NOTICES:

This year, we will be holding a Twilight House Sports Carnival at OLA. This is a great opportunity for families to come down after work to support and cheer on your children as they compete for their house colour. This year’s Carnival will be similar to last year, being run by Proactivity. The children will have three, 30 minute rotations in a variety of activities and games based on running, throwing, and team challenges. Children will also be allocated a 30 minute block during the evening to sit down with their family and enjoy a picnic dinner and to have a go at the ‘Ninja Warrior Warped Wall’. Our wonderful P&F will be hosting a sausage sizzle and food stall too. The details of the House Sports Carnival are as follows:

Venue: OLA

Date: Friday 2nd March, 2018

Time: 4:30pm – 7:15pm

Competition rotations: 5:00pm – 7:00pm

It is a chance for children to participate in a variety of events and to earn points for their house. We encourage students to wear a t-shirt in their house colour with their school PE shorts, otherwise normal sports uniform. The results of the House Sports Carnival will be announced at our first level assembly after the event. The names for each house colour are:

Fatima – Green House Lourdes – Red House Brigid – Blue House MacKillop – Gold House

Coles Sports for Schools Don’t forget to collect your Sports for Schools vouchers each time you shop at Coles. There will be a collection point at Coles Southland where you can deposit your vouchers, otherwise we have a container in the office. Coles will finish issuing vouchers on the 3rd April and we will send our vouchers in shortly after that. Help us to earn some free equipment for our school!

STUDENT WELLBEING

SWELL WEEKLY FOCI/THEME

Week 3 Manners & respect

Week 4 Cooperation & teamwork

Teachers will continue to focus on the Make Jesus Real Daily Positive Happenings ‘Manners Monday, Thanking Tuesday, Winking Wednesday, Thumbs up Thursday and High Five Friday’. Teachers & students will play games and activities designed for cooperating and working together as a team. Teamwork makes the dreamwork!

What can you do to help? 1. Affirm your child when using good manners at home. 2. Encourage them to comment on what other students are doing well rather than

pointing out what others did badly.

Buddy Bench

Please continue to speak to your children about the Buddy Bench and that it is a safe, inclusive bench to go to if they cannot find their friends. In return, encourage them if they see children on the bench to go up and ask them to play. Finally, remind them that sometimes children might go there for a rest, so don’t be hurt if they say no to your offer to play. Keep being kind!

Alpha Mobile Dentistry- W & L Mobile Health Care Services The Alpha Mobile Dentistry (W & L Mobile Health Care Services) will be visiting OLA and providing a bulk billed dental clinic eligible for children under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) on March 14th, 15th and 16th. A hardcopy notice went home with each student last Tuesday 13th February with information regarding your child’s eligibility in accessing the service along with the patient details/consent form. An updated student consent form has been issued by the service this week to also include a non-bulk billing patient consent form (Please see below). Completed forms need to be returned to your child’s classroom teacher and extra copies of the updated consent forms are available from the office. For further information on the CDBS, you can visit the Department of Health website www.health.gov.au Miss Jacqueline Kovacich Student Wellbeing Leader
