SACKED: WORKERS CLAIM Discrimination MAKES THEM siCK

driver found asleep with drugs in car, court told

DANDENONG SOUTH

Two cancer patients claim they have been dismissed rather than eased back into work at their Dandenong South workplace.

Stephen Bonner and Lisa Milkovic said they were not given the option of lighter duties at the Priceline warehouse during two years of ongoing sick leave. Rather, they were sacked because they didn’t do their full jobs.

Mr Bonner, who had worked at the warehouse for 10 years, was diagnosed with renal cancer in 2007. A er having a kidney removed, his managers allowed the inventory worker to return on reduced hours. His workload gradually increased until he resumed full-time work.

Since then, Australian Pharmaceutical Industries took over Priceline, and Mr Bonner’s cancer returned with a vengeance. In 2011 – six months a er surgery to remove his colon, his spleen, part of his pancreas and a tumour on his remaining kidney – his request to resume on light duties was denied.

Mr Bonner said he could have initially worked four-hour shi s at least, and it would have been good for his health and well-being.

An email from operations manager Mark Sims in October 2011 stated: “In regards to Stephen Bonner, it is company policy that Stephen is not allowed to come back to work until he is fully t. His job is still available once he is fully recovered.”

Late last year, Mr Bonner’s gall bladder was removed. Two months ago, Mr Bonner’s two-year income protection ended, and so did his employment. He now awaits a disability pension application.

“I don’t understand it when people are there for so long and are treated poorly,” he said. “I’m not t to work now but 12 months ago I could have.”

Ms Milkovic, as reported in other media, was sacked a er two years of treatment for breast cancer. Barred from talking to e

Journal due to a contract with A Current A air, Ms Milkovic posted a Facebook rebuttal of a letter sent to Australian Pharmaceutical Industries employees by people manager Stephen Arthurson.

In the post on the National Union of Workers’ website, Ms Milkovic said she sent Mr Sims a doctor’s letter declaring she could do ‘‘duties apart from above-shoulder work’’ .

‘‘I was injured at work at API seven years ago and have not been able to work in packing but have worked in inventory,” she wrote.

dandenong south

A former private investigator was allegedly caught by police with 52 grams of methamphetamine, an “ice” pipe and more than $2000 cash in Dandenong North last ursday.

Police allege David Anthony Oldaker, 38, of Cranbourne, was found asleep in his car with the items in Judith Street about 3am.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Chris Capuano told a Dandenong Magistrates’

Court remand hearing later that day that the quantity of ice, and the fact that Oldaker was “mobile and out in the community at a time tra cking would be taking place with unsavoury elements”, suggested he was selling drugs.

Constable Emily Fryters, of Dandenong police, told the court that police who visited Oldaker’s home with a search warrant on ursday found more than $5000 cash, two zip-bags of tablets and one zip-bag of “crystallised substance”.

She said the self-described ‘‘general handyman” declined to explain the prescence of “expensive” Kinchrome tools, six sets of tapware and basins in his home. She alleged they were possible proceeds of crime.

Oldaker’s defence lawyer, Alex Burt, said her unemployed client indicated he was installing the tapware and basins as part of home renovations.

Arguing for her client’s bail, Ms Burt said Oldaker was caring for his wife – diagnosed with schizophrenia and on a disability

support pension – as well as children aged 10, 14 and 17. She said Oldaker had been using drugs for pain relief from serious injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash.

Constable Fryters said a conservative street value of the ice was $10,000.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell granted bail on condition Oldaker report to Cranbourne police station daily and stay home between 10pm and 6am. He will reappear in Dandenong Court on July 18. \

CLW

In February her request to be put on part-time desk duties to build up to full-time work was refused, she claims. On March 4, API sent her a letter of termination, stating she was medically cleared to pick up heavy boxes as part of packing duties.

Mr Arthurson, in his email to workers, said: “We remain genuinely concerned for her health and well-being.

‘‘Given that Lisa’s illness was not work-related, we were entitled to terminate her employment a er three months but we felt it was not the right thing to do so in the circumstances. However, it has now been nearly two years since Lisa went on sick leave and we have been unable to con rm whether or not she is likely to be t enough to return to work in any role in the foreseeable future.

‘‘If Lisa can return to work and has medical advice to con rm which duties she can undertake, either part- or full-time, we will be pleased to look at opportunities to re-employ her.’’

Mr Arthurson wouldn’t discuss Mr Bonner’s case.

National Union of Workers site organiser Dominic Melling said API ‘‘wasn’t breaking any laws but what they’re doing is morally wrong”.

“Workers are not feeling con dent about reporting workplace injuries,” he said. \

RE: COUNCIL MOVES ON ACCESS PROBLEMS■Congratulations to Cr Matthew Kirwan and Greater Dandenong council for moving to investigate concerns about disability-friendly access throughout Greater Dandenong, as raised by disability advocates (Journal, June 3).

I have been acting for years for many people across Dandenong who have suffered disabilities as a result of road accidents.

Many report to me that the lack of disability-friendly access presents a signi cant barrier to their re-integration into the wider

community, as they attempt to rebuild their lives.

The people I help and my work colleagues are glad that this important issue has been highlighted and one can only hope that his investigation translates into action to help make life better for some of the most vulnerable in our community. TIM DIONYSSOPOULOS \ MAURICE BLACKBURN LAWYERS, DANDENONG

RE: ASYLUM SEEKERS SWAMP AID CENTRE■I hate to disappoint you, but our country is not being “taken over” by anyone. Asylum seekers are just that, asylum seekers. The word “illegal” does not come into the equation. They are not opportunists and we de nitely shouldn’t be sending them home.

What we need is a change in government policy. I think a bipartisan approach is needed.

It is not about “us and them”. However, it does involve basic human rights. We are all in this together, and we should stop the nitpicking and be prepared to

welcome and help those who are less fortunate.PATSY HORNE \ DANDENONG

HELP AFTER A FALL■Dandenong Plaza has a number of uneven bricks and I tripped and fell on Thursday, June 6, bruising my knees, hands and my ribcage.

I am a World War II veteran and in fairly good shape for my age, but as I lay on the ground, a number of men and women came to my aid. I want to say thank you to all of them most sincerely, particularly the young lady who asked me if she should call an ambulance and who gave me a glass of water.

Muddling swindler fined $10,000

COURT HEARING

A Noble Park North man – described as “more of a muddler than an arch-fraud” – has been ordered to compensate three customers a er failing to supply promised goods.

In Dandenong Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday, Neil Turner, 62, was ned $10,000 and ordered to pay $1400 in legal costs and $8850 compensation to three customers a er taking deposits for coolrooms and an air-conditioning unit but failing to deliver.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell noted Turner had taken substantial sums of money from the three customers.

Consumer A airs Victoria solicitor Nick Hu on alleged Turner was paid $4500 to supply and install a coolroom in a Seaford milk bar in November 2010, $3350 for a coolroom at a Warburton chicken farm in March 2011 and $1000 for an air-conditioner at a Dandenong North investment property in August 2011.

Turner had met his customers in various ways. Milk bar owner Zhong Chen responded to an ad in Trader Tag newspaper, Turner approached poultry

farm manager Peter Belica at his farm, and investment property owner Khanh Quach met Turner at a garage sale.

Lawyer Peter Cash told the court his client had good intentions but was unlikely to pay the ne and compensation.

“He is not in good health and doesn’t have any assets,” Mr Cash said.

“He has given up his refrigeration work. In all honesty, the likelihood of myself being paid is quite remote.”

Mr Cash said Turner had recently served three months jail for obtaining property by deception.

“He’s more of a muddler than an arch-fraud,” Mr Cash told the court.

Mr Hu on said outside the court that Turner’s son, Robert, whose name appeared on Turner’s business card, had o ered to refund the deposit for the air-conditioner but later reneged. On March 26, Turner jnr was convicted by magistrate Steven Raleigh for failing to supply paid-for goods and ned $7500. He was ordered to pay two victims $6179.20 and legal costs of $2000. \

CCTV cameras WIN PRAISEDANDENONG

Police are praising new security cameras installed in one of Dandenong’s busiest precincts as a deterrent against criminals and vandals.

Commander Tracy Linford, of Victoria Police, said the 13 cameras in and around Foster Street would help Dandenong.

“We’re delighted about this initiative because it means a lot for the area,” Commander Linford said. “It will deter some crime because people will be aware cameras are activated and it will make them think twice about what they might do.

“ It also gives police another tool to apprehend and detect o enders when they’re committing crimes and to gather evidence that’s going to support their convictions. e ultimate aim of that is, they’re o the streets.”

e cameras were installed thanks to a $250,000 state government grant and $50,000 from construction company Grocon. e rst ones were switched on in February.

Greater Dandenong mayor Angela Long said the city had undergone dramatic transformation in recent years.

“ is CCTV funding will help people continue to explore the new Dandenong by assisting in the reduction of crime and

making our community feel more con dent about their safety,” she said.

Crime Prevention Minister Edward O’Donohue said the council had listed the Foster Street precinct as an area of concern due to night-time foot tra c to and from local pubs and public transport.

“ e cameras can be monitored by the local police ... and assist in prosecution of o enders through the courts,” he said. \

A team of 13 is conducting meetings in the Greater Dandenong community, reaching people where they learn, work, and play by attending workplaces, schools and early learning centres.

A major focus is the health of people in the workforce, as Greater Dandenong is a hub of employment for the south-east, boasting more than 11,000 businesses and 74,000 workers.

Greater Dandenong mayor Angela Long said: “By

improving the health and well-being of the workforce we can improve productivity, increase job-retention rates, reduce sick leave and boost job satisfaction.

“Good health is important for people of all ages, for learning and development of children and young people, for a strong and resilient workforce, and for a vibrant and productive society.’’

Council cops a scoldingBUREAUCRACY

e back- ipping bureaucractic bungle over a pensioner’s shopping has grown to comic proportions with an apparent failure by council sta to communicate their changes.

Greater Dandenong Council has been urged to simply “get on with it”, and been told to implement its new policy regarding shopping jeeps on the community bus, and ensure all concerned know that pensioners can now get on board with two bags of shopping instead of one.

e council’s back ip followed an episode last October, when a bus driver abandoned Dandenong North pensioner Grace Willans at Waverley Gardens shopping centre because she had a shopping jeep.

Ms Willans’ stand resulted in council agreeing the system didn’t work. It decided to buy an 11-seat bus tted with a li and a cage to elevate and store jeeps for shoppers.

It also voted for an increase of shopping bags from one to two for each elderly passenger, the purchase of collapsible jeeps to be used by passengers, and a helper assisting people on and o the bus.

But Ms Willans discovered last week that the council’s good intentions had not ltered through to the people involved, as the bus

driver ‘‘chided me for having two bags’’.“I gave him one bag and carried the other

one on myself,” she said. ‘‘ e changes are very good. (But) I think

the council should tell the rules to the old ladies and the bus drivers.’’

Cr Maria Sampey said she couldn’t understand why there had been a delay, at least on the shopping bag increase.

‘‘Councillors have been briefed on this since April 22 and known the outcome,” she said. “It’s been eight months since I asked for a review. Get on with it.

“If it wasn’t for Grace being so courageous, we wouldn’t have known the service was not workable. She has made life a bit easier for the elderly in the future.’’

Council community services director Mark Doubleday said council would notify passengers of the bag increase this week.

“ e council is in the process of sourcing appropriate shopping jeeps,” he said.

“ ey will be made available to residents using the service over the next month on current shopping buses which have a li and cage.’’

He said the new bus would be bought within a few months. \

CFA spends $14.7m on Dandenong expansiondandenong south

Dandenong’s Country Fire Authority aims to be fully prepared for serious bush re threats, having begun construction of a state-of-the-art emergency management complex in Dandenong South.

e CFA’s new headquarters, on Princes Highway, will bring together the emergency service’s incident-control centre, district command centre and regional control centre.

Work also has started on a 24-hour re station on Princes Highway.

e projects, costing $14.7 million, are expected to be completed by next year and will deliver more than 310 construction jobs.

However, the state government announcement last week was marred by criticism from the re ghters’ union about low sta ng levels.

CFA regional director Peter Schmidt said the $3.5 million headquarters project would amalgamate di erent arms of the service.

“Currently, we o en manage major incidents across a number of di erent incident-control centres,” Mr Schmidt said.

“ is will bring them together so there are e ciencies in that, in terms of our expertise and management. It’ll help us provide a greater level of protection to communities.”

e headquarters, to be built on the site of the former Holden plant, which shut in 1996, will house sta from Oakleigh, Dandenong, Pakenham and Moorooduc.

United Fire ghters Union secretary Peter Marshall said that while members welcomed the announcement of new buildings, sta ng levels remained a concern.

“Local re ghters are under further strain because of the e ective closure of the volunteer brigade at Noble Park, which no longer has a primary response area, and only responds to re calls when it wishes,” he said.

“Dandenong has a sta of nine re ghters per shi and seven appliances. [It] needs an extra three re ghters per shi , minimum.”

Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells said the government rejected the union’s claims.

“ is is the same organisation which said there will be a $40 million cut to the CFA budget,” he said. “In fact, there was a $31 million increase in the budget so the UFU can never, ever get their numbers right.”

Mr Schmidt said: “ e CFA has programs in place where additional re ghters are being taken on board. e CFA is putting those positions in place.” \

Education

School principals in the City of Greater Dandenong have been le confused by contradictory Gonski gures released by the state and federal governments last week.

Figures released by state Education Minister Martin Dixon show some schools could lose millions of dollars if Victoria signs on to the controversial Gonski reforms, while federal gures show the same schools will gain millions.

State government data shows Hallam Senior College would be out of pocket $3,501,994 by 2019 under Gonski. According to the federal government, it will be $4,234,144 or 19.4 per cent per student better o over the same period.

College principal Anne Martin said she had not been contacted by representatives from either level of government and was not sure what the school would be entitled to.

‘‘I’m hoping the [state] government will sign up,” she said. “I think the Gonski

reforms are great because this whole system is under the pump.

‘‘If the federal gures are right, then that’s much better for us. at sort of money would have a signi cant impact. It would make a huge di erence to the school’s sta ng pro le and programs for our young people.’’

Ms Martin said the college was proud of its large Vocational Education and Training program and was interested in how the state government would fund VET in the future.

In a statement last Monday, Prime Minister Julia Gillard and federal Education Minister Peter Garrett said claims by Premier Denis Napthine and Mr Dixon were wrong and they should apologise to the 249 schools listed for causing unnecessary alarm.

In response, Mr Dixon’s o ce said funding growth between now and 2019 was “unpredictable and is subject to a number of variables, including new programs, lapsing initiatives and wage increases”.

“ e Victorian government is determined to ensure that all schools, not just most schools, will be better o under the new funding arrangment.”

Some principals say they are uncertain about what Gonski would mean for their school. Many are reluctant to talk about the proposed reforms. \

POLICE BRIEF

An elderly woman, who was viciously attacked with a sharp weapon in her Endeavour Hills home last month, has recovered enough to help police construct an image of her attacker.

Armed with the image (pictured), police manned two information caravans last Tuesday to encourage witnesses to come forward.

One caravan was outside the 73-year-old woman’s home in Georgette Crescent, where the attack occurred at 3.30pm on May 21. The other was near an automatic teller machine at the corner of Lonsdale and Clow streets, Dandenong, where the alleged offender tried to use the victim’s bank card to withdraw cash half an hour later.

The attacker was Caucasian, aged 30-40 and wore a high-visibility jacket.

Police want to speak to a man carrying a JB Hi-Fi bag who was trying to use the ATM when the alleged offender approached. The customer stepped aside and completed his transaction after the man left. \ » Call Crime Stoppers on

18 THE DANDENONG JOURNAL \ JUNE 24, 2013

Recently I Googled, “Do men need meat?”. In 0.27 seconds there were 161 million results. Clearly there are no shortage of opinions. Males and their love a air with meat has ourished with the popularity of the paleo/caveman diets. It started with high protein Atkins, and e Zone followed soon a er. So, do men

need meat? And is it OK to have more than one serving at dinner? is column is based on current scienti c research.

Meat Uncovered \ It is fair to say, not all meat has been created equally. A lean chicken breast or sirloin steak clearly o ers a di erent nutrient pro le to fatty sausages. Meat consists of white (poultry such as turkey and chicken, and pork) and red (usually game birds and meat that is red when raw, such as from a cow). Processed meats and sausages contain ingredients from other foods, and additives.

White and red meats provide a plethora of nutrients. Protein is one. ere are also vitamins and minerals such as B-vitamins, magnesium, zinc and iron. e B-group vitamins are involved in almost every bodily pathway such as digestion, nutrient transport and absorption, and energy production. Magnesium is fundamental to bone development and strength.

Zinc and iron are readily available and absorbable from meat. Zinc is needed for more than 200 metabolic pathways, such as contributing to DNA synthesis, immunity, hormone production and a healthy prostate. Iron is required for cognition and concentration, energy metabolism and fatigue prevention.

Organ meats such as liver are high in vitamin A, essential for vision. It is also crucial in creating a mucous membrane around the eyeball and eyelid. Liver is also a good source of vitamin K, which is key to the blood-clotting process.

The Bad News \ Of course, there is a ipside to the view that lean meat is required for optimal health. Increasingly, evidence suggests meat consumption

is associated with a greater risk of type 2 diabetes, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease. Nitrites in meat and other particles produced during cooking, induce DNA damage; a catalyst for in ammation and disease.

In an evaluation of recent articles and reviews on PubMed, it is evident that gold-standard journals are as one. e British Medical Journal, Cancer Prevention Research, Carcinogenisis, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, European Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the British Journal of Nutrition concur that high levels of meat consumption are associated with increased risk.

The Prognosis \ If you are a “meat man”, consider cutting down. e long-term damage from excess consumption cannot be ignored. How about reducing your meat consumption to no more than once a day and introducing at least two meat-free days a week?

Select protein, iron and zinc-rich vegetable sources more o en, including nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, tofu, wholegrain cereals and green leafy vegetables. Consume them with vitamin C from berries, citrus and kiwi fruit or capsicum, chilli and tomatoes. Combining vitamin C with plant iron enhances absorption, and soaking legumes before cooking enhances zinc absorption. Plants and wholefoods reduce illness and disease risk.

If high-protein, highly meat-focused diets are recommended to you, query who paid for the research – and what their motives might be. \

MOTORING \ ROD EASDOWN CHOOSES HIS FAVOURED FUEL

It is generally agreed among people such as me, people who drive a di erent car every week and never hesitate to share our

opinions with anyone in the vicinity, that the Mazda CX5 is the best in its class. And the pick of the CX5s has always been the diesel.

e 2.0-litre petrol just wasn’t up to the task of hauling all that bulk around. e reason was not only because it lacked power (113 kilowatts is quite modest in a vehicle of this size) but also because it was connected to an auto gearbox so single-mindedly calibrated for fuel economy that the brave little motor never really got a chance to wake up.

e diesel, with more power and a heap of torque, was thus much more pleasant to drive.

Mazda has done something about that, but instead of recalibrating the gearbox and sacri cing an extra measure of the world’s non-renewable resources, it has shoved in a bigger 2.5-litre, with 138 kilowatts on tap. e gearbox calibration remains the same (but is much less noticeable) and there’s an auto start/stop to save a millilitre of fuel here and there.

ose with a social conscience should note that the 2.0-litre is still available, but in all-wheel-drive the choice is between the 2.5-litre petrol and the diesel. Having driven both extensively, I can tell you it’s a close thing.

e petrol motor has delightful exibility

and response; the diesel is strong, willing and surprisingly agile. Both are way better than the old 2.0-litre.

Let me put it like this: if you’re into the act of driving, you’ll be happier in the 2.5-litre petrol. But then you’ll be even happier in a sports car, so why are you buying an SUV? If you want a fuss-free, minimal compromise SUV, then go for the diesel; the economy is terri c.

In the diesel I used 8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 6.5 in the country. e

economy of the 2.5-litre petrol isn’t at all bad but it’s nowhere near this.

e CX5 is comfortable, well made and quite compact for an SUV, despite having good interior space all around. It drives nicely, with long legs in the country and good ride quality, along with perfectly adequate handling, although it does tend to top-heaviness.

It’s also nicely equipped, nicely nished and good value. Top of its class. \

WHAT’S IN IT?A 138-kilowatt 2.5-litre with a six-speed auto.

THUMBS UPGreat build quality, comfort and exibility.

THUMBS DOWNIt’s still not as good as the diesel CX5 and the auto start/stop is rough.

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT MOTORING ...Petrol gauges appeared in cars only in the early 1920s. Before then drivers had to guess how much was left.

Super-boot Michelle the best by faR

PLAYERS TAKE STEPS AGAINST VIOLENCEtac Cup

Dandenong Stingrays last week took part in a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of street violence, a cause players support passionately.

e Stingrays, along with many other clubs across Victoria, wore orange bootlaces to support the campaign Step Back ink, which aims to unite the football community against street violence and its consequences.

Stingrays talent manager Mark Wheeler said educating players was a continual process, and something the club took as seriously as on- eld performance.

“Most of our boys have been educated on

the do’s and dont’s for three years, and we had a pretty big discussion about the [Step Back ink] program,” Wheeler said.

“We give a lot of that stu over to the leadership group, and they drive that home to the players. All our guys can then go back to their local clubs and they’re seen as leaders in that regard and can sell the message.”

Two years ago, the club was touched by street violence when one of its players was king-hit on a night out, sustaining a broken cheekbone.

“We had to deal with that as a club,” Wheeler said.

“We had to sit the players down and make sure they understood what can happen when

you’re out and alcohol and testosterone become a factor.

“We educate players from age 15. ey don’t smoke, they don’t drink, and if they do go out they’re generally home by 11pm or 12. We tell them only bad things happen a er 11.”

On eld, the Stingrays are in a strong position on the TAC Cup ladder despite missing several of their top players through Vic Country duties.

“Every club’s a ected at this time of year, but we’ve had the chance to expose some younger guys to TAC Cup football so that’s the bonus,” Wheeler said. \

Victorian Women’s Football League

ere are almost a million people playing football across the country.

Last week, Michelle Densley kicked more goals in one game than any of them.

With a 20-goal outing for St John’s Old Collegians against Hallam on June 16, she topped the weekly goal-scoring table in Australia. e star has kicked 56 goals in eight games in the Victorian Women’s Football League’s south-east division, ranking her 35th overall in the country, and with the second-highest tally by a woman.

Not bad for someone who would rather be playing defence.

“Our coach, David Kerr, put me in the forward line and I’ve proved him right, unfortunately,” Densley said with a laugh.

“ is is my rst time playing the forward line. I had a bit of a run there when I rst started but I was quickly moved to the backline.

“I generally freak out in front of the goals. I’d de nitely prefer to be in the backline.”

And although the result sounds like a story of domination, Densley is quick to heap praise on her teammates, who helped orchestrate the 48.19 (307) to 0.0 win. To achieve this, St John’s had 12 other goalkickers.

“It was a bit of a one-sided a air against Hallam,” she said. “It was one of the best games our girls have ever played. ey delivered it to me perfectly.

“So the 20 goals is all on them. ey’re the best group of girls I’ve ever played with.”

e win came as vindication too, a er Hallam beat St John’s by 14 points in the grand nal last year. Hallam has lost several players from its premiership side.

Kerr said Densley had been a revelation this season.

“Last year she played on a half-back ank and this year we thought we’d try

her out in the forward line because she’s a great mark and kick,” he said.

“She’s been outstanding.“We had a plan to just feed her

so we could kick a big score and she just nished o the hard work by her

teammates. Sometimes she had two players on her and still outmarked them.

“I’ve been coaching for 13 or 14 years and I’ve never had anyone kick 20 goals before. It was amazing to watch and hopefully she’s on track to kick 100 goals.”

St John’s sits on top of the ladder, with eight wins from nine games and a percentage of 753, well ahead of Scoresby in second.

However, Densley said the team had to be wary of Keysborough and also Scoresby, which beat them in round seven. \
