CHRISTMAS IN THE EYES OF A CHILD

Christmas is just around the corner. Just like one quote said,

“Christmas is sights, especially the sights of Christmas reflected in

the eyes of a child.” So, I decided to pay closer attention to the thoughts of

my students as reflected in their speeches and comments in regards to Christmas in order

to find out how they perceive it. Here are some of their responses to some questions re-

garding Christmas:

Q. What is Christmas about?

Q. What is your favorite part of Christmas?

Q: Which is better? Giving or receiving?

All: Giving!

It’s always Christmas time in a child’s world where there’s no

greediness and selfishness. Just like the undying love of Jesus Christ who sacrificed himself

for us, let us also reflect the joyful sentiments of this season by loving and

giving without expecting something in return.

Bank (KG-3):

I like wrapping gifts for

friends, but I also like getting

gifts.

Ar-meen:

Sing a song like Jingle bells.

Venie (KG-3):

I enjoy being with my dad

and mom. I like being with

them and opening presents.

Meter (KG-3):

It’s birthday! Whole

world birthday.

Proud (KG-2):

Christmas tree and

lights and decorations.

Max ( KG-3):

Santa Claus is coming

to town.

Venie (KG-3):

Giving, because when

you give, it feels really

good.

Pleng (KG-3):

Sharing is fun!

Wata (KG-3):

Giving is good.

Mother’s Day

During Mother’s Day celebration in

Thailand, lights deck the royal avenue.

Portraits of the Queen, mother of the

nation, rise throughout the country. The

sweet, pure scent of jasmine fills the air.

Children kneel at their mothers’ feet and

tears flow freely. These are the scenes and

experiences to behold during each Mother’s

Day celebration in Thailand. While Mother’s

Day is held dear in many cultures through-

out the world, Mother’s Day in Thailand is

doubly special. Celebrated on the Queen’s

birthday, August 12th, the holiday rings forth

with pageantry, emotion and beauty.

A Mother has a very special place in the

heart of her kids. Why not, she really

deserves it. They are our guiding force and

are responsible for making us who we are.

Students at Kevalee International School

celebrated Mother’s Day honoring and

appreciating all mothers on this special day.

Traditionally children offer their mothers

jasmine flowers which symbolize

motherhood. Students made cards, flow-

ers, and recited poems that honored and

showed the importance of mothers and

the loving and caring role they played in

guiding the children through life, with all

its challenges. This activity afforded

students the opportunity to learn and

strengthen their understanding of love,

gratitude and care for others.

International day, also known as World

peace day, is celebrated worldwide on the

21st of September every year. Kevalee

International School celebrated this event

on the 19th of September, 2015. Students

from Pre K – Gr. 10 had singing and

dancing performances.

They did very well with their performances.

Some students did a fashion show/costume

contests in which they represented countries

of their choice. Costumes representing ten

ASEAN countries were also paraded by

some of our students. The winners for this

year’s best costumes were Venie from Kg. 3

in Vietnamese costume, Pique from Gr. 2 in

Thai, and Billy from Gr. 10 in Vietnamese

attire. Some selected teachers also

presented a Bollywood dance, they were

Ms. Lucel, Ms. Marites and Mr. Artie in

their beautiful Indian costumes.

After the program, everyone enjoyed an

International Buffet Lunch. Students and

some parents had brought along some

foods and delicacies from the different

ASEAN countries to share with all present.

Asian, American, and European delicacies

were among some of the food delicacies

enjoyed by all. We are thankful to all the

Celebrating International Day at Kevalee

parents who came and watched the show

and also shared their food with everyone.

Thanks also for giving a helping hand in

serving the foods to the students. We hope

that Kevalee parents will continue to

support all our subsequent activities

throughout the year.

FATHER’S DAY

CELEBRATION

A Father is neither an anchor to hold

us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a

guiding light whose love shows us the

way.

On December 4, 2015, Kevalee

International School celebrated Father’s

Day. It is a reminder to express gratitude

for all of the fathers in our lives along with

all of the ways that we are nurtured, and

that we nurture and nourish ourselves and

others. The first part of the celebration

started at 8:30 A.M. Mr. Marlon, the

Grades 9 and 10 Homeroom teacher, had

led a number of bikers through the streets

of Soi 37 of what was dubbed as “Bike

For Dad” to give tribute to the King of

Thailand, His Majesty, King Bhumibol

Adulyadej, to mark his 88th birthday.

Loy Krathong this year was the honor

accorded to the school by the president of

our community who invited us to join the

celebration of Loy Krathong party at the

K.C Village stage at 07:00 P.M. That was

the first time for us to be invited to an

event like that; where we were proud to

take part in the party and also had the

singular pleasure of presenting the special

performance titled “Thailand Once in a life

time”, a presentation that had four parts

featuring different dance types of Thailand.

The dances were performed by four

students in from Gr. 8-10.

We wish to thank all the students and parents for having taken the precious time from

their busy schedule and graciously spending time with us on “ Loy Krathong Day “

Among the riders

were several

teachers, parents

and students.

The second part

was held at the

stage room.

Parents were first

welcomed by a

video

presentation, then

they were

entertained by the Masters of Ceremonies,

Kaka and Kim, who are both 3rd graders.

They tickled the audience with their wits.

The highlight of the program was the

various presentations time segment, where

most of the students displayed their various

talents in

reciting

poems, singing

and dancing,

then followed

by greetings,

messages, and

card giving.

The program

ended with a closing remark by Mrs.

Juliana.

Celebrating Loy Krathong

November is the month in which all Thai

people, including teachers & students of

Kevalee International School, eagerly

await to celebrate during the night of the

full moon. Yes, that's right! I am talking

about one of the most popular festivals in

Thailand. It is the “ Loy Krathong “,

celebrated on Wednesday 25th

of

November, 2015.The program for this

year's occasion of Loy Krathong was

prepared by the School's Activity Team

under two main work plan as follows:

1. Making Krathong for the students

2. Making of Krathong contest for the

students

kept all their materials in the canteen area

which was the venue for the making of the

Krathong after lunch.

As the bell promptly rang at 12:40 P.M. this

signaled that the time for fun had begun.

Students, parents, management and staff,

and in fact everyone present was full of

happy smiles as they all walked hurriedly to

the canteen to pick up their materials and

start making their Krathongs.

Both Thai and foreign students and some

parents were taught how to make Krathong

of floating baskets in different forms by

our Thai teacher and some special

instructors ( parents ). A very important

aspect of the whole exercise was that

students were able to express their

knowledge of Thai arts, language and

culture. Students of each grade level

expressed their ability to make Krathong. It

was a pleasure to see all of participants fully

concentrating as they worked on their

Krathong. The atmosphere was a joyful and

happy one as everyone worked on making

their respective Krathong in the canteen. In

addition to the happy faces and joyful

atmosphere, the show of kindness and

sharing was heart-warming. As all of this

was taking place, cameras kept flashing

every second of the exercise, It was a most

enjoyable and an unforgettable experience

for all.

A most special feature of our celebration of

(Continued on page 7)

With particular reference to the Krathong

making contest among the students, the

competitions were arranged along three

conceptual lines; with little awards

presented to the winning students by the

management. The concepts for the

competition are as follow:

2.1 Aesthetics (Most beautiful Krathong)

2.2 Creativity

2.3 Environmental Sensitivity

Early in the morning of Wednesday 25th

November, the students and parents

brought lots of materials and equipments

for making Krathong from home. They

Experiential learning occurs in different

ways. Indeed, children learn best when

there is a proper balance to everything.

One great way to enhance their love of

learning is an exposure through Field Trips.

It is an exciting yet rejuvenating activity for

children away from routine events inside

the school ground. Kevalee International

School offers a wide array of opportunities

for its children to fully maximize their

potential.

October 16, 2015 was a very exciting field

trip day for Kevalee students and teachers

at The Royal Development Projects And

Security Coordination Center or RDPSCC

where everyone witnessed the successful

projects of His Majesty King Bhumibol

Adulyadej and his Royal Family. RDPSCC is

located at 9/1 Viphavadi Road Kukot,

Lamlooka Pathumthani. It serves as a

coordination center among Royal Thai

Armed Forces, Royal Thai Army , Royal

Thai Navy, Royal Thai Airforce, Border

Patrol Police Bureau, Office of the Royal

Development Projects Board(RDPB) and

other agencies under the supervision of the

Royal Development Project and Royal Thai

Armed Forces.

RDPSCC leadership team gave Kevalee

International School a very warm welcome

and acknowledged it as the first school to

visit the center so far. The team gave a tour

Field Trip to The Royal Development Projects And

Security Coordination Center

of the King's projects in exhibition to

everyone. The center is inspired by the

work principles of His Majesty the King.

One of such principles of the King is aimed

at the strengthening of the community and

village. As part of the tour, the students

were given the chance to explore a small

area outside the building where the

“Sufficiency Village “ was situated. The

village shows what HM the King has done

with his best effort in teaching the Thai

people to be self-reliant and to utilize

natural resources in meeting their daily

needs and obtaining a quality life. Students

and teachers were amazed by the variety of

plants and animals around the village that

were very useful for the people’s liveli-

hood.

Apart from the King’s works, there were

also impressive projects accomplished by

Her Majesty the Queen Sirikit and

HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn such

as unique handicrafts, delicacies, and other

works of art. A shop was opened where

visitors could also support the Royal

projects by purchasing some products they

wish to take home.

It was indeed a fun Students-Teachers day

out!!!! Our heartfelt appreciation goes out

to the Administrators and Mr. Arty (Thai

Teacher) for organizing this wonderful trip!

October 30, and the days preceding it,

witnessed an active dissemination of

information about ‘the day of the dead’,

the history & origin of Halloween and a

host of other interesting educational

information about the day. Halloween is

a traditional

Catholic

celebration

rooted in Celtic

practices to

remember the

spirit or souls of

loved ones who

had died.

People go to

graveyards to

light candles and

even offer some foods and flowers.

At Kevalee International School, an

entire day was spent learning and getting

involved in the different activities

prepared for the day. The morning

period witnessed the arrival of costumed

youngsters all presenting unique designs

on their faces and impressive attires

portraying various villains and scary

people. Some of them wore batman,

Dracula, vampire and a lot more.

Teachers, students and parents were

given a small piece of paper to vote for

the best costume.

After the School Assembly, the students

and parents were asked to visit the tattoo

booth where our high school students

pasted tattoos on willing buyers, some

cost five baht while others were a bit

more depending on the size.

There was a stall for drinks and sausages

organized by Gr. 6 & 7 students. We

started the activity with trick and treat

Halloween day @ Kevalee

where our kindergarten and elementary

children went to each classroom saying

‘trick or treat’. Not only little ones, even

big ones enjoyed the ‘Trick or Treat’

activity.

The morning program gave our students

an opportu-

nity to display

their talents

like dancing,

singing and

doing drama.

After that, we

had a lot of

fun games like

pumpkin

relay, popping

the balloons,

piñata (where

students were given a strong stick and

they had to break a pumpkin made of

paper Mache) and apple bobbing. Teach-

ers and students all had a wonderful time

participating and organizing the activities.

Lastly, the announcement for best

costumes brought everyone to a stand-

still waiting eagerly for the results. Prom –

the evil scientist, Proud – the friendly

witch and Alex – the vampire were

declared winners for their respective

levels, then we moved on to a sumptuous

lunch of fried rice and sausages.

Post lunch activity was movie time…

everybody had to get their tickets for

movie viewing. The movies available

were Car 2, Big Game and ATM. The

shows went on for about an hour. Every-

body enjoyed and went home happily

yet a bit more frightened of what the

spirits of the dead could do to them

later...Ooooohhh!

Vic, Ms. Aileen, Kru Pui and Mrs. Fe

Thanksgiving Day 2015 @

Kevalee

Kevalee International School witnessed an

exciting Thanksgiving combined with Loy

Krathong day celebrations. The day was

packed with activities, preparations began

the week before when teachers told students

about the various aspects of the history

related to Thanksgiving Day.

The day selected for celebrations was

Wednesday, to coincide with the local Thai

festival of Loy Krathong which was one day

before the real American Thanksgiving day.

During school assembly, instructions were

given about the day’s activities. Then each

group was given the head gears they made

during the Arts activities.

The festivities were shifted to the canteen

hall where students gathered to witness a

variety of presentations prepared by their

fellow schoolmates. The show began with

the hosts Mr. Marlon and Mr. Turkey

(teacher Alex dressed up as a turkey) setting

the mood with their questions and humor.

Gr. 3 presented a brilliant version of the first

Thanksgiving Day. The young boys and girls

along with their teacher Ms. Rain brought

the scenes of that first thanksgiving season

alive.

We were then captivated with performances

by our students from Kg. 3, Pre K, Gr. 1 & 2,

Gr. 4, selected middle and high school

students whose talents were displayed with

flair and fluency. This year’s Thanksgiving

Day celebrations was marked with a unique

first time activity called the ‘Kevalee

Thankful Circle’ where all our students

and teachers held hands to form a circle.

We then sang a few songs of thankfulness

and then each student was handed a

mike through which they spoke a few

words of thankfulness to their elders,

parents, teachers, fellow classmates

and God. It was a first time experience

for most present.

Special games were organized among

students: ‘Dart the balloon’ for students

from Pre K up to Gr. 3. The event was

conducted by our senior students (Gr. 9

& 10), it continued on with the help of

the homeroom teachers for the levels

concerned. The other games were chair

ball for Gr. 4 Vs 5, mixed teams and

chair ball for middle and high school

girls; Gr. 6, 9 & 10 Vs Gr. 7 & 8 . The

other game was for the Middle and High

School boys’ basketball; Gr. 6 & 7 Vs 8, 9

& 10. In general the games were exciting

and as hoped, allowed our students to

display their team spirit.

After the games we had lunch together;

another wonderful experience where

students sat with their teachers and

shared whole barbequed chickens along

with Som tam and sticky rice.

The morning session was devoted to

celebrating Thanksgiving while the post

lunch session was devoted to make a

Krathong.
