First Point
The Day of Gloom and Anguish
Isaiah 91a But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
Tiglath Pileser III
•From 738-734 B.C. Tiglath-Pileser III waged war against his long-time enemies, the Syrians.
Zebulun and Naphtali
•The northern tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali were amongst the first to fall.
2 Kings 15:2929 In the time of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria came and took Ijon, Abel Beth Maacah, Janoah, Kedesh and Hazor. He took Gilead and Galilee, including all the land of Naphtali, and deported the people to Assyria.

… the remnant is sustained by the forecast of the great light that shines beyond the darkness. It is a sure hope –so sure that, according to Hebrew idiom, it is even written in past tenses as though it had happened already.
Matthew 412 Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,
Matthew 414 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:15 “The land of Zebulun and the land
of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
Matthew 416 the people dwelling in darkness
have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,on them a light has dawned.”
John 11 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
John 14 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Third Point
The Days of the King
Isaiah 96 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, EverlastingFather, Prince of Peace.
A Child is born… A Son is Given…
This is more than Hebrew Parallelism. The mystery of the
Incarnation is contained in these two images of the child born and
the son given.
The Government will be upon His Shoulders…
9 And the LORD will be king over all the earth; in that day the LORD will be the only one, and His name the only one. (Zechariah 14)
His Name Shall be Called…
“Wonder of a Counsellor”And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. (Isaiah 11:2)
His Name Shall be Called…
“Mighty God”For in him the whole fulness
of deity dwells bodily (Colossians 2:9)
His Name Shall be Called…
“Everlasting Father”Jesus said to him, “Have I been with
you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has
seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? (Jn. 14:9)
His Name Shall be Called…
“Prince of Peace”For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility (Ephesians 2:14)
Isaiah 591 Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and yoursins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Isaiah 97a Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forthand forevermore.
