Initial Assessment - Establishing your starting points

Initial assessment is a crucial part of the learning journey. It provides the learners the information needed to decide a starting point. It is the benchmark from which progress and achievement can be measured.

Why is Initial Assessment important?

The learner:

• Establishes the level of skill in English, Maths and ICT in relation to what is required for the qualification the learner is signing up to do.

For the Training Advisor:

• Enables the tutor to effectively plan to meet the learner’s needs.

• Establishes a starting point in order to review the learner’s progress and achievements.

• Identifies the appropriate level of English, Maths and ICT in relation to the needs of the qualification.

How do we carry out Initial Assessment?

Initial assessment will start during the sign up and enrolment process to establish the learner’s interests, experience, motivation and prior achievements.

Prior to the start of the learner’s Training with Eurosource it is important to establish which level of Essential Skills the learner currently holds with regards to English, Maths and ICT. The learner will complete an Initial Assessment using the BKSB platform; this can be completed either on a computer or paper-based.

Eurosource carries out Initial Assessment to ensure that the learner is on the right programme and properly supported while on it. If we design and manage the process well, we can use it to gather information to support the whole of the learner’s experience and inform other stakeholders who are interested in the learner’s progress and success.

Staff training in Initial Assessment is vital to ensure the best possible experience for learners. Eurosource ensure staff conducting Initial Assessment are Qualified in the assessment and delivery of Essential Skills. Matching the specific needs of the learner’s to the most appropriate assessment methods and planning to ensure this happens, leads to greater success and appropriate achievement.

There are 6 levels of Essential Skills in English and Maths. They are:

• Below Entry Level

• Entry Level 1

• Entry Level 2

• Entry Level 3

• Level 1

• Level 2

Completing the Maths Initial Assessment:

This tool is designed to assess a learner’s skills in: Number, Measures, Shape and Space and Handling data.

Completing the English Initial Assessment:

This tool is designed to assess a learner’s skills in: Listening, Reading and Writing. Questions begin at Entry Level 1 and increase in difficulty to Level 2.

Completing ICT Initial Assessment:

For ICT there is a combined Initial/Diagnostic assessment. The assessment consists of 3 activities:

• Activity 1) Word Processing

• Activity 2) Email

• Activity 3) Spreadsheets

These activities are designed to allow learners to demonstrate their ICT skills.

Initial Assessment is used to establish the level the learner is at now. Diagnostic Assessment is set at the level the learner is working towards and its purpose is to highlight the learner’s strengths and identify areas for improvement.

Eurosource’s Procedure

Initial assessment will commence upon sign up, firstly with a general discussion about the learner’s job role and responsibilities. This is to determine what level of qualification is appropriate for the learner and whether they will need any additional responsibilities to enable them to fulfil the assessment criteria.

Once the Training Advisor has established the appropriate course level, the learner will undertake the initial assessments for Maths, English and ICT using the BKSB toolkit.

It is essential that the BKSB initial assessments are completed with 10 days of the initial sign up and emphasis should be put on the importance of a true assessment of the learners capabilities.

The individual learning plan will be completed fully with sufficient detail about the learner’s prior achievements, experiences and abilities in relation to initial assessment, this is a working document and the learner will be fully involved in the completion of it.

The learner should demonstrate a suitable command of English and Maths and ideally should record no lower than one level below the required initial assessment level for the apprenticeship (I.e. the framework requires English and Maths at level 1) so the initial assessment scores should be no lower than Entry level 3.

For learners who score a much lower level than required, it might be more advisable for them to undertake an English and Maths short course to up skill these areas before they undertake their apprenticeship.

For learners who are undertaking an intermediate apprenticeship and score level 1 or above then they should be guided to undertake a level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills qualification.

Once the learner has completed their BKSB initial assessments the assessment tool will provide what diagnostic activities to undertake to support those areas in English, Maths and ICT which needed to be up skilled. It is paramount that the learner regularly undertakes these activities as this will help develop essential skills in areas that are weak.

It is the Training Advisors responsibility to check on a monthly basis to ensure that the learner is carrying out the diagnostic activities and this activity will be recorded on the learner’s progress reviews and within the portfolio. Evidence of diagnostic activities and results can be printed off and used as supplementary evidence within the learner file.

Eurosource stipulates that the learner should undertake their Functional Skills exams; including English speaking and listening, within the first three months of being on programme; learners who are ready to undertake them sooner can do so.

For learners who are unsuccessful and fail their first attempt, then Eurosource expects their Training Advisors to provide additional support and activities to develop the learner’s skills further. This will be done by one to one support and planned activities, in line with support material, which will be recorded in detail on assessment plans and learner progress reviews.

Eurosource can also provide suitable Functional Skills activities in all three areas and these activities can be accessed by Training Advisors on the Eurosource server. Activities can be adapted to suit individual needs and requirements.

Placement hours

It is suggested that the following placement allocation is applied. We acknowledge that some learners may need to spend longer in specific age ranges and for this reason there is a degree of flexibility. All assessment criteria must be achieved and each age range must be experienced. Significant placement experience across the age ranges must be undertaken in order to achieve the assessment. Age range Hours 0–1 year 11 months - 25 hours minimum 2–2 years 11 months - 133 hours minimum 3–5 years - 192 hours minimum Learners who work within a setting which provides care and education for children across these three age ranges, and are able to gain the necessary hours of experience, need not seek placement outside of their setting. For those learners who work in settings where these age ranges are not covered, then they will be required to seek additional work placements, this will need the full support of their setting and employers. Assessment Assessment methods used could include:

• Interpretation of knowledge from direct observation of practice in the workplace

• Witness evidence

• Professional discussion

• Reflection on own practice in real work situations

• Written assignments

• Learner’s own plans and written records

• Learner log or reflective diary

• Observation of children, young people or adults by the learner
