Welcome to MotorCities-ANHA!
R ouge River Tour
The Rouge River is not particularly wide nor deep. This river with its three branches and tributaries looks morelike a tree with three thin limbs than a major watershed. When you discover the achievements that have beenmade along its shorelines however, you realize that the Rouge River had worldwide impact as it nurtured the evolution of the auto indistry. Along the Rouge, many armaments for WWII were manufactured, helping toensure worldwide freedom. The struggle for labor rights also took place along its banks, and widespread implementation of the moving assembly line changed manufacturing and defined the industrial focus of the 20th century.
On this self-guided tour you will travel along the bottom of a pre-historic lake that once covered all of southeastMichigan. You will pass over the same ground that the Anishnabeg people, who migrated to this region from theAtlantic seaboard, used for hunting, fishing, and farming. These sites were again used by European settlers whofollowed the French explorers and voyageurs looking for furs. These pioneers used the power of the waterfallsthat dotted this river system to build mills and irrigate their farms. Escaping slaves also followed the Rouge Riveron their quest for freedom.
Around 1918, Henry Ford began purchasing many mills along the Rouge River, and rebuilt many of them to be small-parts factories for Ford Motor Company. These “Village Industry Plants” were powered by hydroelectricity, and the employees were farmers who worked part-time in the plants during the farming off-season. In order to rebuild the old milldams to create hydropower, Henry Ford struck a partnership with the Wayne County Road Commissioners. In this arrangement, the Road Commission built the hydro dams andconnecting roadways to the mills. Ford Motor Company, in turn, agreed to deed over the land and eventually the mills to the Road Commission, as Park Trustees, for incorporation into Wayne County’s Hines Park. Enjoyyourself as you travel along this extroadinary waterway.
Henry Ford Estate – Fair Lane
Experience the world of Henry and Clara Ford by stopping to visit FairLane, the 56 room estate built for Ford between 1913 and 1915. The
beautiful house and gardens were home to the Fords until Henry’s death in1947. Fair Lane was named after an area in the Ford family’s original home-land of Ireland. While visiting, you can take a guided tour and stroll throughthe mansion imagining the family life of one of the leading auto pioneers.Journey into the surrounding landscape, where the Fords spent time with bothfamily and friends and indulge your senses in the fragrant gardens so loved by Mrs. Ford. Ponder and reflect upon a setting rich in design, furnishingsand comfort taking home a little piece of one of America’s best stories.

In 1863, this Nankin Mills structure was re-built by Samuel Hardenburg afterthe original one burned. Nankin Mills was believed to be tied to the Under-
ground Railroad through the abolitionist efforts of the Reverend Marcus Swift.
In 1918, Henry Ford purchased the old mill from Floyd Bassett, making it the firstmill purchased for his “Village Industry Project,” which combined agricultural andfactory work to provide employees year round, productive jobs. Working withThomas Edison, Ford converted the mill into a hydroelectric plant. In 1920, the millbegan making screws and was later retooled for the production of stencils. DuringWW II, parts for the B24 Bomber being manufactured at Willow Run Airport, weremade here. In 1948, after the Mill closed, Nankin was given to the Wayne CountyRoad Commission as Park Trustees to incorporate the mill into the Middle RougeParkway. The Mill is presently a Wayne County Interpretive Center.

Nankin Mills Tenant House & Barn
The Greek Revival House, located just west of Nankin Mills, was once the home of Martin Shephard, the first miller. Henry Ford bought
the miller’s house and gave it as a gift to Edward J. Cutler who moved into the house, restored it and lived here for 12 years while he supervised construction at Greenfield Village.
When Cutler tried to start restoring the house, the owner refused to give him entry to measure the structure. Cutler later learned the owner did not want him to discover he was keeping chickens in the back room. The house was given to the Wayne County Parks Division along with Nankin Mills and is presently used for interpretive programs.

The Nankin Mills one-room school later known as Perrinville Schoolacross the street from Nankin Mills was built by Henry Ford in 1937
on the east side of the mill pond and was one of the country or associatedschools which were part of Mr. Ford’s Greenfield Village School System. Many of these schools were affiliated with Village Industry Mills. The Schoolused the same McGuffey Readers which Henry Ford used when he attendedschool in the 1870’s.
Nankin Mills School had indirect lighting, modern lavatories and air conditioning, which were very unusual for its day. Students had milk to drinkdaily at recess and hot lunches which students prepared. In the summer, thestudents learned about agriculture by growing vegetable gardens on the school grounds.

Newburgh Mill and Dam
The Newburgh Mill was the last of the Village Industry plants to be builton the Middle Rouge River by Henry Ford. It is located on the north
end of the former site of the Bovee Cider Mill in the Village of Newburg.Henry Ford purchased the mill and rebuilt it in 1934. The dam was built in a unique joint effort by Ford Motor Company, Wayne County RoadCommission, and the New Deal WPA program. The mill was opened in 1935 and specialized in the production of twist drills, producing 95% of all drills used by Ford plants worldwide.
From 1935 to 1941, the Newburgh Plant employed 60 men at $6 dollars a day. During WWII, parts were also produced for the Pratt and Whitney airplane engine. In 1948, the mill was deeded to Wayne County Parks System and is presently used as a Sheriff mini station.

Newburgh Lake & Comfort Station
Newburg Lake was first built by a settler named Nicholas Bovee, who in 1870, dammed the river for a cider mill. The Bovee Cider Mill
became an important business in the Village of Newburg, producing up to25,000 gallons of cider a year. The lake and surrounding land became part of Hines Park. In 1997, this 152 acre lake was part of a massive environmentalclean up project. The project involved cleaning contaminated soil, creating a healthy fish habitat, and re-stocking the lake with more than 15,000 fingerlings.
The comfort station, patterned after a train station, was built in 1935. Thebuilding served as a canoe livery from 1936-1956. The station still functionsas a comfort station operated by the Wayne County Park System.

Newburgh Waterfall
For many years, this waterfall was the backdrop for more photos than can be counted. The waterfall was a work relief project built by laid
off auto workers during the Depression to control ground water. The site is currently in disrepair but there are efforts by the Wayne County ParksDepartment to partner with the Livonia Garden Club to adopt the site and restore the stone work.

UNISYS Haggerty Picnic Area
The former Burroughs Corporation, now called UNISYS, gifted much of the land in this area to the Wayne County Road Commission for the
Hines Park park system. You can see the original building in the background.Originally, the Burroughs Corporation was called the Arithometer Company. In 1904, they moved from St. Louis to Detroit after the founder, William S.Burroughs who patented the adding machine, decided to expand productionworldwide. In 1944, Burroughs was given an Army Navy “E” award for the production of the Norden Bombsight. This instrument made accurate high-altitude bombing possible and is considered by some military authoritiesto be the most significant device in contributing to the shortening of WWII.

Plymouth Riverside Comfort Station
Constructed in 1930, this comfort station with its large lobby entry areawas, like many other comfort stations, patterned after a train station.
People would gather in the glass enclosed sunroom for checker tournaments.
Although Wayne County was acquiring land for the Parkway as far back as theearly 1920s, the first mile of Hines Drive was actually built along the stationarea in 1931. The desire to use the Plymouth Riverside Area encouraged theWayne County Road Commissioners, as Park Trustees, to develop a MasterParkway Plan in 1928. Patterned like the Bronx Parkway Plan of New York, this plan was very aggressive and proposed establishing parkways along everymajor river course in the county.

Wilcox Mill
This plant stands on the site of the old Hardenburg Grist Mill builtaround 1850. Henry Ford bought the Mill in 1920. It was in a state
of such disrepair, he had to replace the mill with the present structure in 1923.It was powered by a 30 horsepower hydroelectric generator. The PlymouthMill initially produced generator cut outs. It was soon converted into tap production after the electrical parts assembly was moved to the Phoenix Plant. This mill became the primary source of taps for the Ford Motor Company. The mill employed about 30 men at $6.00 a day. During WW II, the plantemployed 60 men who made B24 bomber aircraft engine parts. In 1948, themill and the adjacent lands were deeded by Ford Motor Company to WayneCounty to be incorporated into the Edward Hines Parkway.

Plymouth Historical Museum
Plymouth was one of the first settlements of western Wayne County. It grew around two major Indian trails, the old Ridge Road and
Ann Arbor Trail. The city grew out of several industries. A mill has stoodalong the Rouge River since 1840. It had an active train depot. The invention and manufacturing of the Daisy Air Rifle happened in Plymouth. The manufacturing of the Alter Car was also part of its ever-enterprising companies. This quaint museum opened to the public in 1976. Special features of the museum include the “Museum Main Street” and the onlyexample of an Alter Motor Car produced in Plymouth from 1914-1916. The Museum also features the nationally recognized Abraham LincolnCollection of Dr. Weldon Petz, including a lock of Lincoln’s hair and bronze casts of the Lincoln Life Mask and Hands.

Markham-Wilcox House
In 1903, William Markham, owner of the King Air Rifle Company, built this Queen Anne house, which stands near Plymouth’s Kellogg Park.
Markham was said to have wanted to build the largest house in Plymouth atthe time. After building the house, his wife refused to move into it. Markham’ssecretary Blanche Shortman, moved into the house and in 1911, she andMarkham were married. Local disapproval of the couple’s life style discouraged them from staying in Plymouth and they moved to California in 1911 and purchased hundreds of acres of land in then rural Hollywood.
The house was purchased by George Wilcox in 1911 and continued to be in the Wilcox family until 2000. During World War II, the house was leasedto the Federal Government and divided into apartments. It remains that waytoday, and the house is currently cited for a condominium development.

Phoenix Mill
The Phoenix Mill was one of Henry Ford’s Village Industries where rurallife met industrial life. This particular plant was unique in the fact that
most of the employees were women. In order to work for Mr. Ford, you hadto be a single or widowed woman, but you were paid five dollars a day justlike his male employees. The mill is built on the site of the one-time village of Phoenix and was purchased by Ford in1919. The plant produced electricalparts and voltage regulators. Today, the mill is experiencing new life as thefuture home of the Phoenix Mill Women’s Museum. Just in the planningstages, this new museum will celebrate the role of women in labor and industrial history.

Meads Mill
This scenic waterfall is located near the site of the extinct Village ofMead’s Mill which in 1873 was renamed the Village of Waterford.
This area had a flour mill, saw mill, and a foundry. The mill burned downtwice. These ruins have been rumored to be the remains of a small powerplant, some believe it was the foundry. The ruins were actually relocated to this present spot when the original river course was changed during the construction of Hines Drive. A local widow bequeathed the WayneCounty Road Commission money from her estate to save the ruins.

Waterford Mill
The Waterford Dam and race were purchased by Henry Ford in 1925 and converted into one of his Village Industry Plants. Henry re-named
the mill after the Village of Waterford. The Mill opened in 1925 as the 6thVillage Industry Plant. It produced high precision gauges up to the late 1950s.The workers at Waterford were almost all of Swedish decent and had beenemployed by another company in New Jersey. Ford purchased the companyand this division was moved to Waterford. In 1948, Nankin, Newburgh,Phoenix and Wilcox Mills were given to the Wayne County Park Trustees. The tap, drill and stencil manufacturing divisions were moved to an annex, which was built onto the Waterford Plant. Presently the Mill is being adaptively re-used for light manufacturing.

Waterford Village & Cemetery
Founded in 1837, by two brothers Dyer and Gannett Ramsdell,Waterford had several industries, including the Mead’s Grist Mill.
Built by three brothers, Meads Mill was once the largest gristmill in Michiganwith an 18-foot water wheel producing over 200 barrels of flour a day. Themill was destroyed by fire for the second time just before the Civil War.
Waterford Village became a stop on the Underground Railroad through the abolitionist activities of Samuel Pettibone Mead. The Village of Waterford is saidto have supplied the largest force of volunteers from Michigan during the CivilWar. Mr. Robert Wallace, an escaped slave, settled here after working at the Mill, and became a Methodist Minister opening the Wesleyan Methodist Church. The Ramsdell Brothers and Samuel Mead are buried in the local cemetery.Unusual for the time, former slaves are also buried here at Mead’s request.

Cass Benton Comfort Station
This beautiful area was given to the Wayne County Road Commission asCounty Park Trustees by Cassius Benton, a former Road Commissioner
in 1922. In his will, he stipulated that a park was to be established on the landafter the death of his widow, Sophia Benton. Due to the popularity of the areawith picnickers, Mrs. Benton gave the land to the Park Trustees in 1925. Thefirst comfort station located here was a wooden cabin that was rebuilt into thecurrent beautiful Tudor style station.
During the prohibition era, a moonshine operation could be found on CassBenton Hill. When the prohibition officers patrolled the area, the moonshinewas hidden in the nearby woods. While the nickname of Beer Hill still lingers, this area now hosts a Disc Golf Course and winter sledding.

Northville Well
The cool fresh water flowing from the Northville well has been bubblingfrom this spring in records dating back before 1885. It is believed the
spring was discovered by railroad workers when tracks were laid through thearea. More than just a popular local place, it was visited by many others, whooften drove miles to fill jugs with the water. In 1932, the Northville RotaryClub erected a shelter over it and enclosed the pipe in decorative fieldstone. The Village of Northville and the well once served as the inspiration for thenation wide syndicated comic strip, the “Nebbs,” by Hess, who frequented the area during the 1940s while visiting a friend. The well nearly ran dry butin the 1960’s local residents joined together to rescue and restore it, keepingthe waters flowing for the future.

Northville Mill
The Northville Mill was the first of Henry Ford’s Village Industry Mills to start production in 1920 and the last to close in the 1980s. Located
on the Walled Lake Branch of the Rouge River, this has been a mill site since1827. The original mill used crude grindstones made from boulders that weresplit in half.
The second gristmill was built by the Yerkes Family. A saw mill was built at this site by the Dubar Family and produced pulleys, wheelbarrows, woodmoldings, and air guns before being bought by Henry Ford in 1919. UnderFord Motor Company ownership, the mill produced engine valves and hasnow been redeveloped into commercial office space.

Northville Mill Race Village
The Mill Race Village, located at the Northville mill pond, is an outdoormuseum of restored historic buildings cared for by the Northville
Historical Society. Many of the historic structures have been relocated to the village site from other nearby locations as growing communities requireddifferent use of the land. Northville became a Village in 1867 and got itsname because its location was north of the Village of Plymouth.
This location was once the site of the original Northville Mill and a stop onthe 1890s Interurban mass transit railway. On exhibit is one of the famousNorthville Bells, manufactured by the American Bell & Foundry Company,1899. At one time, this company was one of the world’s largest bell manufacturers.

Fish Hatchery Park
Fish Hatchery Park led the nation in the 1800s in the farming of fish as a commercial enterprise. Nelson Clark and his son Frank started a fish
hatchery in Clarkston (which bears his name) after immigrating to Michiganfrom Nelson, New York. By 1876, expanded operations moved to Northvillewhere salmon, trout, and white fish were bred. Nelson Clark died two yearslater and Frank continued the operation. By 1880, the business had grown tobe one of the finest hatcheries in the United States. The Federal Governmentleased the buildings and kept Frank in charge of this location and also twoother sub-stations in Detroit and Alpena. By 1935, it was the only federal fishhatchery in the state and continued to raise fish until 1957. Frank Clark, whoserved as the president of the National Fisheries Association, died in 1920.The original house and pond still stand on the site.

Ford Motor Co. Henry Ford II World HQ
The Ford Motor Company Headquarters building rises high into the skyline.Built in 1956 and dedicated as the New Central Office, this building was
later renamed Ford World Headquarters. In 1996, another name change reflectsits current title of Henry Ford II World Center. Nearly 20 years earlier, this sitewas home to Camp Legion, a summer farming project for underprivileged boys.Surrounded by 480 acres of farmland, the program taught farming skills, provided living quarters, and paid $2 a day. By 1943, the program expanded to year round and included academic and shop classes as well as an occupationalrehabilitation center for disabled WWII veterans. As Henry II, Ford’s grandson, took the company reins, many of Henry’s favorite programs were ended.Although Camp Legion’s buildings have long since disappeared, the lasting effects of a man dedicated to providing educational opportunities for the betterment of society can be found in abundance yet today.

Ford Rouge Complex
The Ford Rouge Complex was an early version of one stop shopping andwith this plant, Henry Ford revolutionized auto production. Designed
by architect Albert Kahn between 1917 and 1925, this plant layout enabledraw materials to be converted into a finished vehicle all in one location. Fordmoved his Highland Park production to this location and at its peak the Rougeemployed nearly 75,000 people. The Rouge plant was also the location for twoimportant labor events; the 1932 Hunger March and the 1937 Battle of theOverpass. Ford was strongly opposed to the creation and support of unions, however these two events helped provide the needed foundation for theunionization of Ford Motor Co. in 1941. Today, Ford’s Rouge plant continuesto be a leader in the industry with a nearly $2 billion dollar project creatingnew green space and environmental stewardship at the complex.

MotorCities-Automobile National Heritage Area is one of 23 congressionally designated NationalHeritage Areas in the United States. Our goal is to preserve and share our internationally significant autoand labor heritage story with residents and visitors alike.
To accomplish this task, our organization works in partnership with local institutions, governments, andindividuals in developing projects and programming that push us towards reaching this goal. We put theworld on wheels and we want to share this amazing story with you.
Our efforts are primarily divided into three program areas:
EducationWe are developing several programs that will help students, residents, and visitors understand how theauto industry shaped this region and changed how the world moves. The programs include recording personal histories and an educational curriculum for students K-12.
RevitalizationWe are developing programs that will enable communities to work toward preserving their significantauto heritage sites and help revitalize their surrounding communities. By focusing on our communi-ties, our resources, and our people, we expect to build increasing pride throughout the region, celebrating our unique place in America’s story. Programs include the Top 11 Sites and Stories listing, the Financial Resources Tool Kit for Historic Properties, and ongoing partnership with the HistoricAmerican Engineering Record program of the National Park Service.
TourismWe are developing programs that will welcome visitors to the National Heritage Area and encouragethem to discover firsthand this amazing story. Nine museums spread across the heritage area act asour Gateway Museums with kiosks where visitors are orientated to the National Heritage Area. Thesekiosks provide visitors with tour brochures and information that allow people to go out and explorethe sites where history really happened. This booklet is the newest part of our tourism program.
The National Park Service has been given as part of its purpose, the national responsibility to save ourcountry’s cultural and heritage resources and to develop these resources into meaningful experiences forvisitors as they explore America’s history. As a National Heritage Area, MotorCities-Automobile NationalHeritage Area receives financial and technical support from the National Park Service to accomplish thisgoal as it relates to our Nation’s automotive heritage.
We celebrate a living industry – one that is as important to the economic, cultural and social fabric of our communities today as it was one hundred years ago. No other industry brought greater change toAmerican culture and our everyday lives. No other story better captures the struggle to balance capitalismwith livable workplaces, a fair standard of living, and environmental quality for all citizens. By telling theentire story from as many perspectives as possible, we want to ensure that citizens find inspiration in theongoing innovations, struggles, successes, and challenges that are part of the automobile industry.
