Mark’s Nearly Normal Powerpoint Presentation
2
• I use a lot of powerpoint to teach
3
• It’s a great tool, if you use it right.
4
• Keep words minimal• Its really terrible, upsetting, hard to read and
otherwise irritating to have someone use a visual show, which should focus on ideas, and images, and instead, overwhelm your visual senses with some drab, over long, run-on- sentence-using, endlessly boring, hard to read, over the top written material, about which you could care less, unless of course, you have the eyesight of an eagle, and the attention span of a rock, which would, I believe be the equivalent of having the patience to sit and endure for a geologic age, which is, in case you didn’t know, much longer than humans have been on the earth, but you’ll excuse me, I go on too long…..
5
• Use lots of images
• images speak volumes, or as they say, a picture is worth…. a thousand words.

8
• Keep your audience limitations in mind…….
Slide 1Slide 50
Slide 90
110+ slides
9
• Include movies and sounds – Have to leave these out of this, cuz we’re puttin’ it on
voicethread, but…– Movies, especially edited clips….– Can focus attention….– Clearly animate…..– And get your audience’s attention….
10
• Ask lots of questions of your audience– All kinds of studies show that teaching a bit, – and then asking your audience questions about what you
taught, – while letting them help each other recall, – is a great method.
• EXAMPLE: Think Pair Share (always yellow)
20. Explain the basic physical difference between chromatin and chromosome. (questions in blue)
Chromatin is unpacked, can be read. Chromosome is packed up, unreadable. (Answers in cream)
