Cultural Contacts
Notes on Québec music
© C
Bonjour and welcome to the spring/summer edition of Québec Culture.
This cultural season promises to be particularly rich and varied with some of Québec’s big names coming over and a host of exciting new artists to discover.
From Céline Dion to De Temps Antan, our pages devoted to music are crammed full of a multitude of talent in various musical genres from indie to classical to trad and more.
In circus, London’s Underbelly Festival Southbank brings back fun and friendly FLIP Fabrique to the capital whilst the Arctic Art Summit invites one of the most intimist circus offering to the very north of Norway with the European premiere of Claudel Doucet’s latest work.
Québec’s renowned spirit of innovation will also take centre stage with digital arts trailblazers presenting
works at London’s Barbican, the Manchester International Festival and Intonal Festival in Sweden. Please peruse the brochure to find out more about these as well as upcoming offering in dance, theatre, multidisciplinary, literature and even what to catch from Québec on your screens at home!
This impressive array of Québec culture coming to these shores over the next few months is testament to the strength and health of our national relationships; something of particularly high value in the current international context of upheaval and uncertainty. I strongly believe that culture is a key component of a kind, open and enlightened society. Whilst on the international scene, it is clear that the arts have an important role to play in encouraging intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and value sharing.
Québec is extremely proud of its artists and cultural enterprises, whose incredible work on the world stage showcases the best of Québec to an international audience while at the same time opening doors to investment, intercultural development and positive political exchange.
Culture is a central part of the Québec identity and a vital force in our economy. We are proud and delighted to be able to share all of this with you again this year.
In closing, I invite you to take a look at our Festivals & Events in Québec page (p. 18-19), presenting the variety of cultural showcase events open to international promoters and distributors, and to contact Maude and her team to discuss any potential projects you may wish to develop with Québec.
Bonne lecture!

Keep an eye out for our next edition, the special Edinburgh mini brochure, coming out in July.
FOCUS Wales will be presenting a showcase of Québec artists for a second year running this May (see p. 4 for further details). We asked Co-Founder Neal Thompson to share his experience of the Québec music scene.
“Since we started FOCUS Wales International Showcase Festival we have often looked to and been inspired by nations similar to Wales, their music cultures and festivals and the synergies of language and international outlook. From the outset we felt just such a closeness with Québec. The importance of preserving our national language and culture and presenting it on the world stage is at the core of what we do with FOCUS Wales and we have looked to Québec from the outset as a prime example of how to achieve this.”
In the past twelve months, we have finally been able to realise that affinity, hosting music showcases on both sides of the Atlantic in 2018. First at FOCUS Wales in May with POP Montréal bringing three fantastic and diverse bands from Montréal and our return showcase at September’s POP Montréal festival saw three of the best new Welsh bands have the opportunity to take the trip out and to perform and network.
Both events were extremely well received by dignitaries, industry delegates and perhaps most importantly, music fans alike. This has formed the basis for what will be a valuable partnership between our two cultures that can now grow and develop in the coming years.
As well as being an important cultural exchange, this relationship will also open up a new opportunity for the music industry to access showcasing events in our respective nations and to increase the networks and international performance opportunities for our artists.
For two comparatively small nations, our shared belief in the importance of our languages and culture make a common goal that we can cooperate to achieve.
Through working together we can create a strong voice and make sure it is heard around the world.”

Québec @ FOCUS Wales
16 – 18 MayVarious venues in Wrexham, UK (see listings p. 20-21 or visit website)
FOCUS Wales is an annual multi-venue festival which places the spotlight firmly on emerging talent. FOCUS Wales 2019 will mark the festival’s 9th edition, and will once again showcase Québec talents:
The High Dials This psychedelic pop band from Montréal have released five albums and toured North America and the UK multiple times in the last ten years, including stints with the Brian Jonestown Massacre and Besnard Lakes. Their melodic sensibility is rooted in 60s classics but infused with dream pop, new wave and folk influences, winning praise from the likes of Brooklyn Vegan, NME and All Music Guide. The band is back with a soulful
collection of beat-heavy electro pop full of hooks, harmonies and dead-pan humour.
ABAKOS Congolese-Québécois artists Pierre Kwenders and Ngabonziza Kiroko of ABAKOS borrowed their name from the fraught political history of the Democratic Republic of Congo: An Abakos was originally the Mao-inspired suit which Mobutu Sese Seko made standard for the country in his efforts to counteract European influence in the 70s. But the reference is tongue-in-cheek, and the project is more informed by the duo’s past than about it.
The music is beautiful and forward-facing, with resonant lyrics about hope, love and change.
Nate Husser Nate Husser first started his career in the heart of Little Burgundy in Montréal with his acclaimed hip-hop band The Posterz. He broke out as a solo act with his 2017 debut, Geto Rock for the Youth. The EP’s vibey feel and nostalgic mood is a stark contrast to his live performances which are injected with a certain punkness that differentiates him from the rest of his peers. In the summer of 2018 Nate Husser unveils a three-part project that
tells a semi-autobiographical story of an artist and the love-hate relationship one has with one’s hometown.

08 Québec @ Rise 2019
3 – 5 MayUniversal HallFindhorn, Scotland
Rise 2019 celebrates Dance North’s burgeoning relationship with Québec artists and organisations by presenting exciting screendance work by two Québec artists. Set in a beautiful, remote part of Scotland, it offers an uncompromising, provocative and entertaining program.
Le Fils d’Adrien danseFounded in 1999 by Artistic Director Harold Rhéaume, Le Fils d’Adrien danse’s mission is to produce contemporary dance that is accessible, refined and profoundly human. Rhéaume, in
collaboration with established Scottish screendancer Katrina McPherson bring two co-operative video pieces to Rise 2019:
Paysages Mixtes | Mixed Landscapes Filmed in evocative rural and urban landscapes in Québec and Scotland, the videos are a series of duets and solos performed for the camera by the duo in which they move through different, nuanced versions of their relationship.
Dix Commandments | Ten Commandments Working with artists from different backgrounds, the duo will create a series of ten solo works inspired by each of the ancient commandments to create an innovative project exploring themes of morality in the 21st century.
Mandoline HybrideSingeries Founded in 2007 by Montréal-based artist Priscilla Guy, Mandoline
Hybride explores the body in motion through different media: stage performances, screendance, in situ choreographies, video installations and multidisciplinary work. The company was awarded ‘Most Innovative Use of Sound/Music’ at Light Moves Festival of Screendance (Ireland) for CORRIDORS in 2014.
In Singeries, two women are trapped in the middle of a videographic fresco in which their image is multiplied and shattered. They ape and compulsively replay their own image to stay true to themselves.

Québec @ Arctic Arts Festival
22 JuneHarstad, Norway
Québec will once again be in the spotlight at this year’s Arctic Arts Festival, an arena for Arctic arts and culture encouraging collaborations between different northern regions.
Radical Vitality
Compagnie Marie Chouinard‘Viscerally exciting’ – The Stage
Montréal’s foremost enfant terrible Marie Chouinard has created dozens of works since her debut, Crystalization, in 1978. She founded Compagnie Marie Chouinard in 1990 and since then the company has presented work all around the world.
For this year’s Arctic Arts Festival, the company has delved into their repertoire to compose a new work consisting of solos and duets. Chouinard brought a new perspective to these small choreographic forms by recreating them with new costumes, sound environments and new choreographic adaptations. Certain projects which, until now, had remained on the pages of the choreographer’s notebooks, were also unearthed.
Se Pendre
Claudel DoucetSe Pendre is an acrobatic piece staged in the extreme proximity of an apartment. It is an essay on our intimate relationships and what it means to be human and explores how, through relationships, we complement and confront each other. The acrobatic language speaks to this balance and rebuffing of our fragile and lonely condition.
This brand-new performance by Claudel Doucet, a talented aerialist and contortionist, will première at the Arctic Arts Festival. A graduate from the National Circus School of Montréal, Doucet has performed for Cirque du Soleil in Japan, taken part in a number of cabaret projects in Germany (GOP Variétés, Chameleon) and toured with Circus Monti in Switzerland. She has also collaborated with Québec’s Les 7 Doigts and Cirque Éloize.

Atmospheric Memory
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer @ Manchester International Festival
6 – 21 JulyScience and Industry MuseumManchester, UK
‘Museums, galleries and biennials have flocked to work with him for at least a decade, given that his projects have two levels of appeal: a gee-whiz, hands-on side that brings people in the door, and then a deeper, often darker meaning that can be apprehended by those who choose to linger.’ – The New York Times
Two-time recipient of a BAFTA for Interactive Art in London, Montréal-based artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer presents Atmospheric Memory, a new immersive installation at the prestigious Manchester International Festival.
Lozano-Hemmer has, over the past few decades, earned a reputation for large-scale, participatory installations that incorporate technology, light and the architecture of public spaces.
Inspired by computing pioneer Charles Babbage’s provocative proposal that the air is a ‘vast library’ holding every word ever spoken, Lozano-Hemmer’s remarkable new artwork harnesses both state-of-the-art technology and classic phantasmagorical effects to capture air from turbulence caused by speech. It then transforms it into something we can see, hear and even touch: trails of vapour, ripples on water and epic 360-degree projections.
