Copper Basin News Vol. 53 No. 20 Wednesday, May 18, 2011 Periodicals Postage Paid at Hayden, Arizona 85235 50 Cents Celebrating More Than 50 Years of News Coverage in the Copper Basin By Cindy Tracy An inspiring outdoor ceremony celebrating success and moving forward in life through education took place at Central Arizona College’s Aravaipa campus May 13. Shortly before the 6:30 p.m. graduation for 2011 on the campus, 15 capped and gowned students marched in step to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance and took their places in a special section of chairs on the lawn. These students, representing a wide variety of age groups, received a total of 17 degrees and certificates that night. Zachary Seth Bingham, Angela C. Bruner, Christopher E. Carrillo, Aracelli Castaneda, Maria G. Garcia, Amanda A. Hughes, Samajia Rianne Perez, John C. Prahl, Kari K. Ramsey and Yvette Leigh Trinité-Boulier each earned an associate degree. Garcia, Hughes and Ramsey graduated with honors, meaning their grade point average was 3.5 or above. Garcia and Prahl each received a certificate as well. Certificates were also received by Tracy A. Alvarez, Kelly Rene Fletcher and Sherene M. Ruiz. Guest speaker at the commencement was Pinal County native Pete Guzman. Holding Associate and Bachelor of Arts degrees as well as a Master’s in Education and an administration certificate, he has been a teacher, coach, athletic director, principal and superintendent during his long career in education. He is currently superintendent in the Superior Unified School District and Cobre Valley Institute of Technology District, which he is credited with building “from the ground up.” He also is principal of Superior High School, Superior Junior High School and John F. Kennedy Elementary in Superior. Wearing all these educational hats, Guzman told the graduates how honored he was to be there because 40 years ago he proudly sat where they sat now. “I truly understand the pressures, sacrifices you had to make to bring you to this proud moment tonight,” he said. The graduates’ journey to continued success goes on, he reminded them. “After 38 years as an educator, my journey is almost over,” he said. “For you the journey continues.” Time moves in the blink of an eye, he told the graduates. “So when opportunity comes, be ready for it. Don’t be afraid to go and grab it.” He told the graduates that possibly at that very moment they were thinking about their next move past graduation or next opportunity for success. So he decided to talk to them about the word “success.” He quoted the iconic auto manufacturer Henry Ford. The auto mogul once said that “some people succeed because they are destined to, but most people succeed because they are determined to.” Guzman said he chose the topic of success because the students had already achieved success by being members of the graduating class. And success, regardless of how they define it, is also something the graduates can Celebration ... Just over 125 people were in attendance at the meeting to listen to the presentation given by US Postal Service employees Brian McCoy (Retail Manager), Yolanda Stenson (Manager of Post Office Operations) and Ken Ohman (Manager of Operations Support). In attendance at the meeting was Arizona State Representative Frank Pratt (R, District 23). Representing Winkelman was Councilwoman Anita Hinojos along with Town Clerk Sylvia Kerlock. Mayor Monica Badillo, Vice Mayor Maria Muñoz and Councilwoman Rhonda Cooper were among several members of Hayden Town Council present at the meeting, having rushed through their own Council meeting in order to be present. The point of the meeting was to provide information to the public concerning the possible discontinuance due to the current state of the economy, explain the possible options and answer questions. A US Postal Service press release, posted Tuesday, May 10, states, “Despite significant cost reductions and revenue growth initiatives, current financial projections indicate that the Postal Service will have a cash shortfall and will have reached its statutory borrowing limit by the end of the fiscal year. Absent substantial legislative change, the Postal Service will be forced to default on payments to the federal government…The Mailing Service revenue of $14.0 billion decreased $568 million, or 3.9 percent, in the second quarter of 2011, compared to the same period a year ago.” Due to the significance of the decrease, the Postal Service has been forced to make changes and are currently conducting studies into the most effective, hence the point of this meeting. Some of the key issues discussed in the meeting included the requirement for the US Postal Service to review all vacant postmaster positions prior to reposting to determine if there is still a need, the fact that the USPS has lost $2.2 Billion in the first six months of this fiscal year, and whether or not the USPS will be able to meet the Universal Service requirements if they close one or more of the Post Offices currently operating in Hayden and Winkelman. Last year, the US Postal Service was not allowed to raise any prices on postage and, due to the severe decrease in revenue, expect to close over 2,000 Post Offices nationwide. Concerning the Hayden and Winkelman Post Offices, there are three options: (a) both offices will be kept open (b) both offices will be consolidated into one, or (c) both offices will be closed. “I am a Postal employee,” said McCoy. “We take no pride and no enjoyment in having a meeting like this. This is absolutely not something that we want to do.” If the post offices are both closed, street delivery will be performed by a nearby post office and any existing PO Boxes will be moved to the nearest office. If currently citizens do not pay for their P.O. Box due to no street delivery, this will remain the same if the P.O. Box is moved. Mary Lou Chavez Acosta, 77, passed away at her residence Tuesday, May 10, 2011. She was born in Superior, April 14, 1934, to Felix Sandoval Chavez and Ana Maria Escalante, the youngest of nine children. As a homemaker, Mrs. Acosta early on became pro-active in the community, serving as fi rst lady mayor of the town and became the fi rst female on the school board. She was a V.F.W. Auxiliary member and also was a member of the Club Social de Damas. Years before, when the mine closed down, Mrs. Acosta helped many receive gainful employment in carpentry, mechanical work, etc. She became a troop leader in the Boy Scouts, was a precinct committee person for the Pinal

County Democrats, and taught English as a second language in the schools. At her church she taught catechism and coordinated for 10 years the parish talent show, often while driving the elderly as a volunteer to appointments. Mary Lou was a “Vista Volunteer,” working with the school board to help those at high risk who were usually youth addicts or school dropouts. Her home furnished an informal shelter for the less fortunate: food, directional counseling and general help were afforded when necessary. She became a kindly truant offi cer to direct many back to school schedules. Two sons survive: Antonio: (Tony) of Superior and Andrew of Tempe. There is one brother living: Raymond Chavez of

Superior. Numerous nephews and nieces are found throughout various local families: Chavez, Duarte, Guzman, Groves, Kipp, Romero, Lopez, Muñoz, Gallegos, Baltierra, and Byrds. Those preceding Mrs. Acosta in death are her husband, Tony C.; four brothers, Rogelio Garcia, Ernesto Garcia, Encarnacion Chavez and Marcial Chavez, along with three sisters, Lupe Villareal, Aurora Muñoz, and Mary Jessie Duarte. On Friday May, 20, Rosary will be recited at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 10 a.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 by Father Mark Long with the interment following in Fairview Cemetery. Superior Funeral Home assisted the family.

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Report is taken from the daily logs, based on the information provided by deputies. All persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. May 6 A fi re was reported across the San Pedro River in Dudleyville near the old crusher. A live power line was downed in high winds and the line sparked a fi re. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, owner of the power line, was notifi ed and the fi re was extinguished once the power was cut.

According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting offi cer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damages are estimates. May 9

Francisco Macias, 28, was arrested for driving with a suspended license and speed reasonable and prudent. Other calls included nine ambulance calls; 29 for service; and one for a citizen assist. Verbal warnings included 11/8 for speed; six for equipment violations; and one for a stop sign violation. One citation was issued for no mandatory insurance. Items are given to the Copper Basin News by the Kearny Police Department and refl ect information available at the time the report is compiled.

Graveside services for Alfonso Amador Solis were held April 30, 2011 at Fairview Cemetery in Superior with Reverend David Wade offi ciating. Mr. Solis, a resident of

Kearny, was born Jan. 16, 1925 in Rancho Nuevo Del Carmen Sobrerete Estado De Zacatecas, Mexico. He went to be with the Lord on Easter morning at 2:02 a.m. April

24, 2011 at the home of his son, John Manuel (Jodi) Solis after being released from the hospital a week and a half earlier. Alfonso was a retiree

Alfonso Amador Solisfrom Kennecott Copper Corporation, Ray Mines Division. He loved the wilderness and was a member of the Kearny Sheriff’s Posse. He loved to ride his horse in the mountains and go quail and rabbit hunting. Alfonso moved to the area in 1952 and established his citizenship. He married John’s mother Margie Youtsey Douglas. She was playing piano in the church choir in Ray-Sonora when Alfonso met her. He played guitar, sang and played violin. He taught his son how to play guitar at a very young age and instilled in him a love of music. Alfonso had a lot of friends in all walks of life. While living in Silver Creek (the old Battle Axe) he was always out in the mountains with his friends

and godsons, Charlie Estrada, Chris Lomeli and Victor Ortiz. He especially loved his grandchildren and enjoyed taking them out on rides on his horse like he did with his son, John, when he was a small boy. Alfonso loved nature and God and would often tell his loved ones Bible stories. He always taught John to respect others

and to do his best to live by the Golden Rule and practice the Word of Jesus. Alfonso leaves behind sons, John Manuel (Jodi) Solis and Milo Alfonso Knight (MariElena) Solis; grandchildren, Marc, Matthew and Lenny; 11 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Kearny Police Report

By Taylor Sheaffer Ritter I am about to school you or rather give my opinion as to why it is important to be involved, but let me fi rst admit that I am in fact a hypocrite; from Hippocrates, the Greek who (obviously) was famous for acting in contradiction to his stated beliefs. I don’t mean to be a complete hypocrite (maybe that makes me an incomplete hypocrite?) since I sincerely want to be involved in politics through voting from the small town level right up to the National Level, but I have yet to apply for my Arizona license. I am soon to be married and would rather not go through the serious harassment of reapplying after I’ve changed my name. Maybe I am a geek because of this, but it asks on the voter registration form for my Arizona license number. I have bad luck with this.

Taylor’s Take: The Importance of Being Involved

During the last presidential election, I woke up early, went to my polling station and was beyond the point of serious anger when I found out that I was, in fact, not registered. Let me explain. I had three months prior renewed my license in Utah and I happened to do this on a morning where I was not in best form. Not only did the woman refuse to let me retake my picture, but to add salt to the wound she apparently also did not register me to vote after I asked her fi ve times. Way Lame. Not only did I look like a guy in my license, but I not able to vote in a landmark election. Let me explain why this situation is the pits: (a) I have a unisex name, (b) even if a resolution requiring MVD employee to pass a hearing test before they are hired, I would not have been able to vote on it, let alone vote for the next president and (c) I am fairly certain multiple people witness the mini-temper tantrum I had upon returning to my car, having been denied my vote. Just a word of advice, if you have a square jaw, even a slightly square jaw like myself, do not cruise in to renew your license when you

Sarah Ann Cruz EscalanteI can still picture you all excited to go to Headstart. Your first day there should have been an indication of what your experience with school

would be.I recall your 8th grade year; we lost both your Tio Tom and Tia Grace. I remember your graduation speech. The biggest honor you could give them was in your sophomore year when YOU were the ONLY student who exceeded in AIMS on all three

subjects.Once again this year was a rough one but you proved yourself once

again. Even though you won’t hear “Congratulations Sarah Lee” you know that Tio Marcos is smiling and

very proud of you. We wish you luck on your new chapter in life and just do your best. We

are so proud of you.Love you,

Mom, Dad, your brothers and their families

strive for all of their lives. “No matter what the job you have or the amount of education you have or wish to get, success in doing it is the underlying factor,” he said. He said that personally he sees four keys captured in the word “success.” These are competence, values, teaching and responsibility. Each member of the graduating class is competent or they would not be there, he said. Values are needed as well to compliment competence. Exactly what values does he recommend? He listed treating others as you want to be treated, being the best at what you do and contributing to the group to which you belong. Guzman told a story about a man who had tried to discover the secret known to those who had achieved success. The man distilled all his research down to two words: “I will.” That meant, Guzman said, “I will do the best I can today; I will treat people as I want to be treated and I will contribute to the groups I belong to.” The keys of “teaching” and “responsibility” were left in understanding success, Guzman said. “I have often been amazed at how often people find themselves teaching,” he said. “I don’t mean only in the classroom. I mean in every normal day.” We teach by what we do, he said. We teach by what we say. People teach one another whether they know it or not. “We learn from one another,” he told the graduating class. “You have been and will be a teacher.” And the final key is responsibility. Guzman broke that down further into “personal responsibility, professional responsibility and public responsibility.” He said successful people are responsible for their own well-being and the well-being of their families, friends, neighbors and fellow workers. “They are also responsible for maintaining and improving in their professions,” he said. “For some of you this is something coming in the near future. For some of you others you are already doing this.” Successful people also assume public responsibility by getting involved to make a positive difference, volunteering their time, making donations that are appropriate and voting in local, state and national elections. “It is our American way,” he said. Chosen as student speakers at the ceremony were Amanda Hughes and Aracelli Castaneda. Hughes opened her address by thanking Dr. Doris Helmich, Vice President of Student Services, the governing board and other dignitaries. “And so here we are,” she said to her classmates. “This is a very important time in our lives.” She said this was not about the grades, not about the tests or the perfect attendance. “This is really about our journey, this important milestone. It is really about our set goals, commitment to see it to the end and the wisdom we’ve gained along the way.” And, more importantly, she said, it was about the people they had met along the way. “Thank you for the opportunity to speak on this significant day, as it is a great honor,” Castaneda said after she acknowledged those in attendance. “Today we celebrate our accomplishments as graduates and reflect upon the efforts necessary to reach this stage. Endless hours of study, mounds of homework and an infinite amount of sacrifice, dedication and persistence to stick it out have gotten us to this place.” Following the speeches, introductions and acknowledgements, Gladys Christensen, President of the Board of Governors awarded

the degrees and certificates. The members of the class of 2011 moved the tassels on their mortar board hats to the other side, the age old symbol of graduation. Shepherded by their proud CAC mentors and leaders and the applause of the standing audience members, the graduates marched out to the music of the Recessional. Also participating in the CAC-Aravaipa campus graduation was the Ray High School ROTC who solemnly presented the colors at the beginning of the program. Copper Basin Idol Miranda Aviles sang the National Anthem. Vice President of Instructional Programs and Services Dr. Donald M. Pearl explained academic regalia. President Dennis A. Jenkins gave a history and recognition of the candidates. Faculty Senate President Ben VanDerLinden presented the candidates. Maria Munoz called the roll before the graduates walked in the Recessional.

By Taylor Sheaffer Ritter There’s a lot changing at the Hayden Police and Fire Departments and they wanted to show it all off! On Saturday, the Hayden Police/Fire Department held an open house to show the recent changes to both the departments. Turnout was excellent, with many citizens arriving to survey the exciting new changes. Sergeant Young, Yvette Waddell and Fire Chief Vega did the majority of

planning for this event which included a bike raffles, gifts, fingerprinting for children identification, hot dogs and refreshments for attendees. The main purpose of event was to give the community a chance to come in and ask questions or voice their concerns to staff and this was happily fulfilled by many guests. The Police Department staff also used the event to showcase to citizens the newly painted police building. The event also provided the opportunity for citizens to

meet new staff, along with the chance to check out the newly painted fleet that was long overdue. Police Chief Monty Antcliff worked very hard to succeed in getting these projects completed and have the police department running to the standard it is now, at its best. The Police and Fire Staff want to thank everyone for

their support and attending this event. Bike Winners for Fire Department given by Chief Vega were: Girl’s Bike: Clarissa GonzalesBoy’s Bike: Andrew Waddell

have bangs, with your hair pulled back, wearing glasses; the results are not awesome. So I am going to approach this as someone who is envious of those who have the ability to vote and especially annoyed by those who have this ability and do not take it. Let me be clear…Your vote absolutely counts. It does make a difference. Consider the situation of a small town election where your one vote could be the difference in the election when only 67 people cast their votes—hmmm, in this event one vote is definitely a big deal. It is just as important, maybe more so, to vote in your hometown election as it is to vote in the national election. You are not just voting on who gets into office, you are voting on things that affect your life…such as Medical Marijuana or SV-1070. I would venture to say that the majority of the citizens of the United States truly do not understand exactly how much the government (i.e. the people voted in to make decisions for you) actually impacts their lives. Think about the milk that you pour over your cereal in the morning; the government has hoards of regulations affecting how it is produced, bottled, sold, etc. Think about the tires on your car, the government requires sets of standards to be met for production, testing, materials, sale, etc. Think about your body, a thing that subconsciously many people believe has nothing to do with the government and is completely in their control; not the case, on face value, the government dictates every aspect of what you can put into or have done to your body. Now, I am not trying to assert any political opinion here, rather I am merely trying to project just exactly how much the government has to do with you, and I have only given a few examples. The reason you vote is simply to officially cast your opinion as to what you believe should be done, basically, with your rights

and taxes; wouldn’t you like some say in what happens to that money taken from you every pay check and every time you spend money on anything? If you don’t vote then you don’t have an opinion and to be frank, it is rather rude to voice that opinion if you

knowingly do nothing to back it up. Don’t let it come to the point where, due to the sting of taxes, you are forced to act. As my father always lovingly tells me, Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance. Get involved!

Fun was had by all on Saturday, May 14, at the Winkelman Flats. Large crowds turned out to participate in the Mud Volleyball fundraiser that was held to raise funds for the Hayden-Winkelman Little League. Many participated and a large amount of people simply pitched a chair with a nice frosty drink to enjoy the fun in a more-clean-than-others way. Those who participated were definitely muddy, wet and grimy, and capturing their efforts in the pit was a harrowing moment (trying not to cover the Nikon in murky water). One of the most enjoyable moments was watching the kids get ahold of the hose and turn it on friends. Concessions were sold to raise funds for the little league and the food sold was donated by various involved parties. Hopefully a large amount of funds was raised to match the enjoyable spirit that permeated the atmosphere. (Taylor Sheaffer Ritter photos)

Gettin’ down and dirty for a really great cause ...

By Cindy Tracy The towns of Hayden and Winkelman are eyeing the possibility of providing more recreational options for youth, adults and seniors. They have asked the Hayden-Winkelman Unified School District for a “commitment to engage in discussions” in a project to renovate aquatic facilities at the Hayden High School Pool. The Town of Hayden pool would also be renovated under the proposed plan. J. Peter Armenta of the Central Arizona Association of Governments (CAAG) presented the idea May 11 to the Hayden-Winkelman school board.

CAAG has been asked to aid in finding funding and has researched some possible avenues. CAAG is a regional planning agency serving Pinal and Gila counties. The agency works in the areas of transportation, environmental quality, community and economic development, job training and social services. The idea behind a project to renovate the two local pools is to add more recreation options for youths year-round, as well as provide options for adults and enhance the recreation opportunities provided by the Hayden Senior Center. Current recreational opportunities the plan identified in the area include, for youth,

baseball and softball in the summer, the Town of Hayden pool in the summer, the Hayden-Winkelman Unified School District’s Cyber Café. There is also the CAC College for Kids in the summer ($210 for a week). Local adults have options for water fitness in the summer and group fitness/Pilates occasionally. Seniors have the Hayden Senior Center. The proposal as outlined for the pool renovations included a number of facts and figures about the benefits of physical activity for youth, adults and seniors. For instance, the document stated that physical activity by adults can result in a reduced

Possible pool project considered in H-W area risk of dying from heart disease, developing high blood pressure and diabetes, control weight and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints. Physical activity in older adults can prevent the loss of strength and stamina and mental deterioration. Swimming is a no-impact option for those with poor joint health, according to the proposal outline. In requesting the commitment for discussion, Armenta told the H-W board there was

no obligation or financial commitment being asked for at that time. He discussed possible funding ideas for the project. These included possible USDA Rural Development Grants, leverage from the Towns of Winkelman and Hayden and “other potential partners” such as Central Arizona College, mining and health industries, etc. He said Winkelman has agreed to help fund operations and Hayden is willing to partner.

“I don’t speak for the board,” said Hayden-Winkelman School Superintendent Jeff Gregorich, “but it really seems as if you have done your homework.” He said that the district was not in a position to make the financial obligation but CAAG had made a point to say that is not what they were interested in. “I think to make a commitment we’d have to have another board meeting and put it on as a discussion action item.”

By Georgie Wood([email protected]) After we had made the difficult

decision to sell our Wood Brothers Panorama Ranch, in 1970 we sold it to The Nature Conservancy (TNC), a national conservation organization whose primary objective was to acquire and protect outstanding natural areas. Thomas W. Richards was President of TNC, and Attorney Richard Duffield of Tucson was the Arizona Chairman. I believe that conservationist Edward Steele of Tucson had much to do about the sale of our ranch. Although an agreement had been made that Fred, Alice, Cliff, and I could stay on the ranch, our lives would be changed. Our front lot was often full of cars, as there were many visitors to the canyon.

Publicity about the ranch included a July 4, 1970 Life Magazine article, and two newspaper articles with pictures. One of those articles, called “Happy Cowgirls At Home On The Range,” was in the November 14, 1970 issue of the Ole’ Tucson Daily Citizen, and the other, called “Big Roundup In Aravaipa Is The Last,” was in the November 25, 1971 issue of the Arizona Daily Citizen, both written by David Hoyt with wonderful pictures by Manuel Miera. There was also a portion of the January 22, 1971 film “The American Wilderness” that was produced by Bob Rogers of N.B.C. It was narrated by N.B.C.-TV “Today” show host Hugh Downs, and anthropologist Dr. Emil Haury of the University of Arizona spoke in it, as did my husband, Cliff Wood. What Cliff said was unrehearsed and so natural as he expressed his feelings. There was one part of the film where our daughters, Ann and Francie, were to wait on their horses for a certain time to run them over a ridge to come into view of the camera, and as they were waiting they discussed how funny it would be to shock everyone by not having their clothes on as they came into the view of the camera! Sure glad they didn’t do that! The background music was Ann playing her guitar as the two of them sang a song

they had written. The song’s title is “There’s A Place I Want To Be,” and it words conveyed what their lives on the ranch meant to them. In November of 1971, some of our cattle were bought by George Gordon who had range across the San Pedro River, and who, with his wife, Rosie, developed their “Country Beef” slaughtering and meat-selling business across the river from Dudleyville, and some cattle were bought by Bates Sale who owned the property across the river from Dudleyville that Buster Naegle had once owned. Not many cattle were left on the Panorama Ranch range by the time Defenders Of Wildlife (DOW) assumed TNC’s mortgage on the ranch in April of 1972. Dr. Richard H. Pough was President of DOW, and Arizona Directors were Louis Barassi of the law firm of May and Dees in Tucson, and Edward Steele. DOW had plans for the continuation of cattle raising; Cliff was hired to be DOW’s cattle manager; and author Edward Abbey was appointed by DOW to be “coordinating custodian,” during which time we met his friend, Doug Peacock, the later-author of “Grizzley Years”. Ed Abbey lived on the hill above the ranch homesites in a trailer home that DOW had purchased from our friends, Bud and Helen Burnap, who we had let live there after Bud had retired from his forest ranger job in Wyoming. A green Chevy Surburban was also purchased by DOW so that potential donors to DOW could be driven up on the Panorama Ranch range, and DOW had also bought some of the Lupe Salazar property at the east entrance to the Aravaipa Canyon Primitive Area, and the McNair properties to its east. In May of 1973, author Edward Abbey joined those who were branding cattle on the Panorama Ranch range, and it was also in 1973 when he gave us an autographed copy of Cactus Country - The American Wilderness by Edward Abbey and the Editors of Time-Life Books. More later about the controversial author who was to give us six more of his autographed novels.

consolidation or closure, none of the current employees would lose their jobs. The option of stopping Saturday Street Delivery to cut funding was raised by an attendee, which McCoy confirmed would save in excess of $3 billion; however, stopping Saturday delivery is not a decision that the Postal Service can make and needs to be approved by Congress. Both McCoy and Stenson vehemently expressed that this was simply a study and that the process of deciding a plan of action will take at least six months.

us out,” explained Coach Hatfield. Leading the Lady Bearcat’s own 18-hit game was Lacee Reidhead who was three for four with one RBI, Leticia Arguello at three for five with two RBI’s, and Samantha Juvera who came in at one for four with a two-run homerun. The game ended at a disappointingly close 13-14, yet with such a talented team coming out as division champions, the season was still a great one.

By Cindy Tracy The Hayden-Winkelman Unified School District is busily engaged in finalizing their current school year and looking ahead at the one to come. At its May 11 meeting, the H-W school board discussed whether students who complete all required courses and credits but have not passed the AIMS (Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards) should be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony. Students who are allowed to do this will not receive a diploma. Superintendent Jeff Gregorich said this item applied to one student. The board approved the item. Similarly authorized were students who have completed all “core” subject classes and passed AIMS but are short elective credits to be completed in the summer to participate in the

ceremony. It was stated that this currently applied to one student. The board held a budget hearing and later approved a 2010-2011 budget revision for an increase of $20,153.58. Gregorich said the funds will go towards transportation in the district due to the increased cost of gas. The revised budget total is $2,482,164. The board discussed certified

staffing, reduction in force and approved certified teacher contracts for the 2011-2012 school year. Also approved was permission to advertise for a “highly qualified” sixth-grade teaching position and for a bus driver. The superintendent reported on May activity dates in the district. Included was the May 17 middle

high school campuses. By refinancing the existing balance of $1,390,000 of the bonds, the school district will save $122,707.37 in interest over the remaining seven years of bond payments; this large amount of money can now be utilized in other areas. This action may also result in savings to the district

Currently one of the two offices is leased, so closing that office would help save money; in addition, both offices are running in the deficit, which will be taken into consideration during the study. One of the main reasons that Arizona has not previously been faced with discontinuance is that from a management perspective, McCoy does not want any discontinuance to take place, yet times are difficult and things must change. The final decision to either close or consolidate the two offices is not made on a local level, it will be made at a National Level; only the recommendation is made at a local level. If they were to move forward with closing both offices, a community post office could be set up at a local retail location. Hayden Mayor Monica Badillo expressed concern of closing specifically the Hayden Post Office since there is a large community of retired individuals, some of whom do not have a vehicle and some of whom cannot walk long distances; this decision would make receiving their mail extremely difficult. McCoy said that it is extremely important for residents to fill out questionnaires or write a letter expressing their needs, beliefs and additional questions; there are two different questionnaires for both Hayden and Winkelman which can be obtained at either Post Office. He explained that customers will have several opportunities to contribute over the course of the study. Customers have the option either to mail their questionnaires directly to McCoy at Arizona District, 4949 East Van Buren Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85026-9605 or to simply drop off their completed letter and questionnaires at either post office and they will be sent as a courtesy. All questionnaires and letters must be received by Tuesday, May 31 to be included in the study.
