Sept 17 Theft of a credit card was reported on the 100 block of Giffen. Criminal damage to a residence was reported on the 100 block Johnston Dr. A window had been broken. Other calls included 11 ambulance runs; one 911 hang-up; two juvenile runaway reports; Six suspicious person/vehicle/circumstance reports; Six citizen assists; one found property report; one agency assist; three information reports; one welfare/unattended death report; one unwanted subject report; one illegal dumping report; one civil problem; and one criminal trespass report. Verbal warnings included one for a city park curfew violation; one for a license plate violation; and one for an illegal U-turn. A written warning was given for speed and citations were issued for expired ATV registration and a stop sign violation.

A sliding glass door was broken.Sept. 22 An elderly woman called PCSO to

report that there was a rattlesnake near her car, located in the 5600 block of North Dudleyville Rd., Dudleyville. It hadn’t bitten anyone, but she needed help removing it. Oktoberfest is held on Alden in order to promote the local businesses who well be setting up outside their stores or featuring specials inside, with those located off Alden setting up in the grassy mall area. Other entrepreneurs who make jewelry, purses and quilted items enjoy the privilege to sell their projects. With fall in the air, even though it is hot, think ahead. These vendors will have great items especially if you are the type to buy Christmas gifts early. You can’t go wrong at Oktoberfest October 5 and 6. Members of the local clergy will be blessing your animals at the kiosk in the Railway Park on Sat. from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All animals must be on a leash or in an animal carrier. Parking for the blessing will be behind the Retail Center following the paths set aside for entering and exiting without going anywhere near the cars.

Pinal County Animal Control will be on hand with animals that have been neutered, spayed, vaccinated and have microchips all for an adoption fee of $65 on up to $150. The Street Fair opens at 12:00 p.m. Fri. Oct 5. Join Neal Wood, Charlie Poarch, Jack Carrell and Dave Davenport at 4:30 p.m. as they entertain you for your dining pleasure. Enjoy the Ray vs. Valley Union football game and return Saturday morning to check out the cars so lovingly presented by their owners. Booths open Sat. at 9:00 a.m. Drawings There will be drawings all day long at the Apache Gold Stage. Children’s activities will start at 11:00 a.m. in front of the Pinal County building with crafts, games, karaoke and the ever-popular dance party. Firemen and Emergency Care Chili Cook Off will take place in front of the Fire Station at 11:00 a.m.

Show awards have been presented, gather for the Hot Dog Eating Contest. All ages are encouraged to enter. It is an event that is fun to watch. The Chamber office for the weekend will be

FLORENCE, Ariz. – On Oct. 11, 2012, Copper Area News Publishing will be sponsoring a forum for Pinal County Supervisor District 1 State Senate and Legislative District 8 and county attorney candidates. HAYDEN, Ariz. - The Town of Hayden has finally been authorized to begin construction of its new Wastewater Treatment Plant and Wastewater Collection System. The Town and the Contractors will make every effort to keep pedestrian and vehicle disruptions to a minimum. There may be occasional brief inconveniences, but the Town is requesting your cooperation during this period and hopes you will be patient while this important project goes forward. The homeowners of Hayden will be individually responsible to make sure all nonpermanent obstructions are moved off the proposed path of the sewer line from their property line to their homes. Failure to keep the pathway clear may prevent the contractor from constructing the sewer service to the house. If this happens, the sewer line will only be constructed from the street to the property line and it will be capped. The homeowner may be financially responsible for connecting to the service line at a later date if the obstructions are not

accomplished in five phases . Phase 1 will include San Pedro from 10th Street north to the end of the street, all of Canyon Drive, North Drive, and Cottonwood Lane, and Warner Drive and all the lateral streets in that area.

Phase 2 will include Utah Avenue, Hayden Avenue, Park Lane and all the lateral streets in that area. Phase 3 will include Garfield Avenue and Velasco Avenue and all the lateral streets in that area. Phase 4 will include

Terrace Drive, Sunnyslope Avenue, Hillcrest Avenue, and Smelter Road and all the lateral streets in that area. Phase 5 will include San Pedro from 10th Street south and Lower Road and all the lateral streets in that area.

By Mila Besich-Lira Last week the Hayden Town Council voted to approve paying a motivational speaker to come and work with town staff. The speaker will cost $2500 and will help the staff to learn how to work together as a team

rather than as separate departments. Councilmember Rhonda Cooper explained that several residents had asked her about the fees and that a few felt it was unnecessary. After further discussion, the council voted and it was unanimously approved to

hire Ed Smith. Bill Liester, Hayden Town Manager explained that the staff has never really been trained to work together and have always functioned as separate departments. Staff is hoping that the customized training will help the departments to

work together. The town hall will remain open during the training and residents should not experience any delays in service during the one-day training. The training has not yet been scheduled officially but will be scheduled before the end of the year.

The council also voted to purchase 12 SCBA units and a pager system. Both purchases will not exceed $18,500 total. Town Staff will also have their pay days changed to Wednesdays. The change will allow the finance department to operate more efficiently.

By Mila Besich-Lira Things seem to keep moving along as planned at the Town Hall in Kearny. At a recent town council meeting, the council approved a request from the American Youth Soccer Organization for the use of the ball fields for soccer practice and games this

fall. They also approved a request from the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce for their requested road closures for the upcoming Oktoberfest celebration Oct. 5-6. The council also approved a base hospital contract with Oro Valley

hospital for ambulance service. Prior to this contract, the Kearny ambulance worked with Northwest Hospital as their base hospital. The council adjourned into executive session for a discussion and or consideration of an employment contract of a public officer-town

Kearny Town Council approves community requestsmanager, including legal advice, application and interview process,

possible contract negotiation and legal advice on the water issues.

By N. Waddell The Lady Lobo volleyball team took the court for two matches last week coming away with a thriller at Miami High School and swept the Bearcats in a home contest. The Lady Vandals came out strong in the fi rst set talking, moving and not allowing the Lady Lobos to land their serves winning 17 to 25. The Lady Lobos would have no part of the Vandal hype coming back strong to take the second set 25 to 15. Melinda Marinez carried the Lady Lobos in the third set with her serving hitting for ten service points in the Lobos third set win 25 to 21. The Lady Vandals would not go down easy coming back strong with their spiking to take the fourth set and tie the match at two sets apiece to set up an exciting fi fth set for the match win. The fi fth

set started out like neither team wanted to win as both teams kept breaking each other’s serve. With the score tied at 12, the Vandals were on the verge of victory taking a 13 to 14 lead when Hayden fi nally broke their serve to tie the score at 14 to 14. Kyana Garcia went to the service line and after some long volleys fi nally got the 16th point to win the set and the match three sets to two. The Lobo JV team also came out of Miami with a win defeating the Lady Vandal JV in three sets. After dropping the fi rst set in a hard played 22 to 25 set, the Lobo JV came back strong taking the second set 25 to 19 and took the match with a dominating performance in the third set to win 15 to 9. The Lady Lobos were on home court on Thursday September 20 hosting their rivals, the Lady Bearcats.

The Lady Lobos dominated for the fi rst part of the fi rst set taking a 15 to 8 lead after the fi rst round of serving and held back a comeback attempt by the Bearcats to take the fi rst set 25 to 21. The second set was all Lady Lobos as they dominated the court not allowing the Bearcats to land their serves winning with a lopsided 25 to 12 score. The third and fi nal set again was domination by the Lobos not allowing the Bearcats to land their serves and defended well not allowing the Bearcat spikes to hit taking the third set and the match 25 to 19. In their two matches, the Lady Lobos did not lose a set defeating the Lady Bearcats in six sets. The two wins gave the Lady Lobos a fi ve win against two losses record for the season.

The Lady Lobo JV team also had a sweep of their match with the Bearcat JV winning the fi rst set with a score of 25 to 22 and put the Bearcat JV team away with a 25 to 14 win in the second set to get their record to seven wins against one loss for the season. The Lady Lobos will be busy this week traveling to Mesa Prep on Mon. boarding the bus again on Tues. for a trip to Ft. Thomas and will return to home court on Thurs. Sept. 27 taking on the tough Miami Lady Vandal volleyball team. The Mesa Prep and Miami matches have a 5:00 p.m. start for the JV contest followed by the varsity match at 6:00 p.m. The match at Ft. By N. Waddell The Hayden Lobos’ foot-ball game at Mesa Prep last Friday turned into a com-plete disaster for the Lobos. After holding the Monsoon offense to three plays and a punt after the opening kick-off, the Lobo offense looked dominating moving the football down the fi eld until they ran out of downs. The two teams exchanged possessions a couple of more times until the Mon-soons struck the fi rst blow scoring a touchdown on a 28 yard run with 4:03

showing on the fi rst quarter clock and took a 0 to 6 lead when the two point play was stopped. It was a defensive battle for the rest of the fi rst half with the Lobo defense bending but not breaking and the Lobo offense shoot-ing themselves in the leg with fumbles and penalties to go into the half time break trailing the Mesa Prep Monsoons 0 to 6. The third quarter was dif-fi cult for the Lobos. First, they lost the serves of one of their top players when

Adrian Ochoa, a tough running back and a hard-hitting linebacker, went out of the game when he ag-gravated an ankle injury he suffered earlier in the week. The injury might keep him out of action for the remainder of the season. Then it started; fumble after fumble on crucial downs and penalties to negate good runs. Early in the third period on the third play after the kick-off, a Roman Padilla pass was intercepted by the Monsoons and on the

attempted runback; they fumbled the football with Aaron Lagunas recovering for the Lobos. The Lobos repaid the favor. On a run by Padilla, he fumbled the football with the Monsoon defen-sive player picking up the football and running it back 25 yards for a defensive touchdown. The two-point play was stopped giving Mesa a 0 to 12 lead at 9:34 of the third quarter. The fumbles con-tinued, the penalties con-tinued and you could see

momentum wearing a green Monsoon jersey. Again, fumble after fum-ble kept stopping the Lobo offense and coupled with the fl ags against the Lobos, the Mesa Prep offense took advantage as a disheartened Lobo team could do noth-ing right. With time run-ning out and the Monsoons ahead 0 to 32, the Monsoon coaches thought that 32 points was not enough with less than a minute to play and took advantage of the young Lobos now in the game to score another

touchdown to win the game 0 to 38. Ten fumbles during the game coupled with eleven penalties was just too much for the Lobos to overcome. The loss of Ochoa did not help. The Lobos are done with road games with the next three games on home fi eld starting this Friday when the Sentinels of the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind come to Lalo Serrano Lobo Stadium for a contest with the kick-off set for 7:00 p.m.

By Richard Bravo The Ray Bearcats traveled to Cibecue last Friday to take on the Wildcats in an afternoon contest. With the Bearcats playing in higher elevation and with temperatures a little cooler, the Bearcat team remained hot with a 76-20 win over the hosting Wildcats. The Bearcats came out strong as the defense held the Wildcats on three downs. A bad snap on the punt attempt gave the Bearcats offense the ball on the Wildcat 21 yard line. The Bearcats offense got on the board quickly as quarterback Destry Yocum connected with receiver Dominic Bravo on the second play of the drive for a 21-yard touchdown pass. The two point conversion failed giving the Bearcats an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter. The Bearcats quickly got the ball back as the defense kept the Wildcats from moving the ball forcing a turnover on downs at the Wildcat 15. On the first play from scrimmage after the turnover, Bearcat running back Jacob Wernett took the handoff 15 yards for another Bearcat touchdown to give them a 14-0 lead going into the second quarter of play. With no points to show for in the first quarter of play, the Wildcats found themselves celebrating early in the second when they found the end zone on a 5-yard touchdown pass. This cut the Bearcat lead by half with 9:10 remaining in the second quarter. The Bearcats didn’t let the celebration last to long as their special teams struck again when kick returner Bravo took the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for his second kick return touchdown of the season. The two point conversion was good and gave the Bearcats a 22-6 lead. Unable to answer right back, the Wildcats go three and out and are forced to punt the ball away. Starting from their own 33-yard line the Bearcats stuck to the ground going 47 yards on five plays when running back Clarence

Baptisto capped the drive with a 4-yard run to lengthen the Bearcats lead to 30-6. The Wildcats tried to keep the game close before heading into the locker room by coming up with a big play on special teams and took the ensuing kickoff 60 yards for a Wildcat score with 2:14 left in the first half. The two point conversion failed for the Wildcats leaving them trailing 30-12. After a touchback by the Wildcat kicker, the Bearcats started from their own 20-yard line. With quick scoring in the quarter by both teams running back Baptisto wasted no time giving his team more cushion. He took the handoff from Yocum on the first play and out ran the Wildcat defense 60 yards for the touchdown with 1:34 to go in the half. The two point failed giving the Bearcats a 36-12 lead. With little time on the clock to work with the Wildcats took the kickoff back to midfield with under a minute to play. On their third play of the drive, the Wildcat quarterback connected with his receiver on a 22-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was good for a 36-20 score at the end of two quarters of play. The second half of play was all Bearcats as they came out looking impressive in every category from offense, defense and special teams. The Bearcats started the half on their own 35 when the attempted onside kicked was recovered. On the second play of the half Yocum connected with Wernett on a 25-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was good for a 44-20 Bearcat lead. After the Bearcat kickoff, the Wildcats turned the ball over on their first play when linebacker Bravo intercepted the pass and returned it 37 yards to the Wildcat 8 yard line setting up a first and goal. The Bearcats punched it in quickly when Baptisto took the handoff and crossed the goal line for another Bearcat score. The two-point conversion was good extending their lead

By Richard Bravo The Ray Junior High Bearcats went into last Tuesday’s game looking to get back on the winning side after a bad outing the week before. The Junior Cats looked to get redemption against the Miami Vandals after last season’s controversial game that was stopped early due to dirty play and unfair play calling. The home game at Dave McFee Memorial field was played clean and fair and the Junior Cats came out on top 14-8 improving their record to 3-1. The game started with the Bearcats taking the opening kickoff starting from their own 30-yard line. However, the big defensive linemen from the Vandals shutdown the Bearcats on their first possession and forced the Bearcats to punt. The Vandals started from their own 45-yard line after a 20-yard punt. The Vandals started quickly, moving the ball on the ground taking just two plays to get into Bearcat territory. The Bearcats put a stop to the drive when the defense forced the Vandal ball carrier to turn the ball over on the Bearcat 10 yard line. On the final play of the first quarter, the Vandal defense broke through the line for a sack on quarterback Cole Yocum pinning the Bearcats

deeper in their own territory. The second quarter started with no score on the board. The Vandal defense changed that when they came up with a big tackle in the end zone for a safety giving them a 2-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Vandals looked to extend their lead after receiving the free kick given to them after the safety. The Vandals put themselves in a hole when they received two big penalties and took a big loss on third down. With the Vandals, facing a fourth and long they attempted a fake punt that was stopped way short by linebacker Paul Michael Wormwood to force a turnover on downs. The Bearcats took advantage of the turnover getting things rolling when quarterback Yocum hit receiver Jonah Cude on the first play of the drive for a 25-yard gain to the Vandal 20 yard line. On the fifth play of the drive, quarterback Yocum, behind his blockers, found the end zone on worth keeping putting the Bearcats on the board. The two point conversion was ran in by Yocum and gave the Bearcats an 8-2 lead at the end of the first half of play. The Vandals started the second half of the game from their own 45-yard line. Unable to move the ball on their first three plays, the Vandals went

for it on fourth down but were stopped as Jordan Pace and Anthony Acuna came up with a tackle on the Vandal ball carrier forcing a turnover on downs. The Vandals were not outdone on defense and got a turnover of their own by getting Bearcat quarterback Yocum to throw an interception on the Bearcat 30 yard line. The Vandals capitalized on the turnover as they go 30 yards on four plays to tie the game at eight points each at the end of three quarters of play. After an attempted onside kick by the Vandals failed, the Bearcats started the fourth quarter from their own 43-yard line. The Bearcats moved the ball with ease when the offense came to a halt on the Vandal 30 yard line. Facing a fourth and one the Bearcats gambled when Yocum took the ball and got a big first down keeping the drive alive. With momentum on the Bearcats side after the first down, Wormwood took the handoff around the right side and ran 21 yards for another Bearcat touchdown. The two point conversion failed giving the Bearcats a 14-8 lead with 5:00 left in the game. With the Vandals having plenty of time to score a game winning or trying touchdown, they started from their own 44-yard line.

The defense of the Bearcats took any hopes of winning or tying the game from the Vandals by stopping them from moving the ball. Linebacker Fabien Valenzuela had a big play on fourth down when he fought his way through the line and stopped the Vandal ball carrier in his tracks short of a first down. This got the ball back to the Bearcat offense allowing them to run the clock out and win the game. The Bearcats played a tremendous game especially on defense. They came up with several huge stops on fourth downs to keep the Vandals from continuing their drives. Defensively for the Bearcats Yocum was the leading tackler with 7 tackles and 3 assist, Wormwood 7 tackles and 2 assist, Bobby Mesa had 4 tackles, 1 assist and 1 sack, Martina Aranda, Nathan Molar, Anthony Acuna, and Valenzuela with 2 tackles each. Offensively the Bearcats were lead by running back Wormwood who carried the ball 5 times for 67 yards and one touchdown, Yocum with 5 carries for 33 yards and a touchdown. Yocum also threw for 25 yards on 2 attempts completing 1 for a touchdown. Receiving Jonah Cude had one catch for 25 yards. Great job Bearcats on a big victory!

Bearcats roll past Cibecue Wildcats, 76-20to 52-20. With the Bearcat defense holding the Wildcats offense to minimal yards, they forced another punt giving their offense good field position at the 30-yard line. With his running backs and receivers already finding the end zone, quarterback Yocum took his shot and scrambled 30 yards on the second play of the drive to add to the lead. The two-point conversion was good to make it 60-20 Bearcats with 5:20 left in the third. After another three and out by the Wildcats they were forced to punt. With the Bearcats already having one touchdown on special

teams, Wernett added another taking the punt 32 yards for the score. The two point conversion was good putting the score 68-20 with 2:53 remaining in the third. The next possession for the Wildcats didn’t get any better as linebacker Bravo got his second interception of the game and ran it back 26 yards for the defensive score. The two-point conversion was good for a 76-20 lead at the end of three quarters of play. The fourth quarter was played without either team scoring giving the Bearcats a 76-20 win improving their overall record to (3-2) and

(3-1) in league play. Despite being shutdown in the second, half and several players suffering injuries the Wildcats played tough till the final seconds ticked off the clock. Offensively the Bearcats had 288 total yards. Quarterback Yocum had 3 touchdowns (2 pass, 1 rush) threw for 67 yards on 4 attempts. Leading rusher was Baptisto with 98 yards on 9 carries and 2 touchdowns, and Yocum with 35 yards on 2 carries and a touchdown. Receiving leader was Wernett with 2 catches for 45 yards and a touchdown, and Bravo with 2 catches for

22 yards and a touchdown. Wernett and Bravo also had touchdowns on special teams. Defensively the Bearcats were led by Wernett who had 5 tackles, 2 assist, and 3 sacks, Jacob Pace had 4 tackles, 1 assist and 2 sacks, Yocum had 4 tackles and 2 assist, Bravo had 3 tackles, 1 assist and 2 interceptions, Rexx Sosa, Ryan Bickley, and Joe Rudy Lorona with 3 tackles each. The Bearcats next game will be against the undefeated Pima Roughriders Friday night at Dave McFee Memorial field starting at 7:00 pm. Good Luck Bearcats!

Nine students from Central Arizona College’s Aravaipa Campus were rewarded for their excellence in the classroom on Sept. 18 with induction into Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society of the Two Year Colleges. Phi Theta Kappa recognizes and encourages the academic achievement of two-year college students and provides opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming. The Blazers played the El Rio Rampage in two morning games this past Saturday at Juhan Park. The Blazers took the lead and never looked back in the first game. The game was shortened due to the run-ahead rule. The score was 12-0 after 4 innings. Starting on the mound Daniella Hinojos (4K/0W/0ER) for two innings, Brianna Galarza (0K/0W/0ER) 1 inning of relief, and Nikki Baldenegro (1K/0W/0ER) closing 1 inning combined for the shutout. Offensively all nine Blazer batters registered 1 hit. In the second game of the double header the Blazers took an 8-0 lead and with the assistance of seven runs in the fifth inning ran away with another win. The final score 17-4 after five innings. Starting on the mound for the Blazers Nikki Baldenegro (2K/0W/0ER) for two innings, Daniella Hinojos relieving (3K/3W/0ER) two innings, and Brianna Galarza (1K/1W/0ER) closing one inning. By Georgie [email protected] When I was growing up in Hayden, and while later living along Aravaipa Creek, I don’t remember that we felt that we needed to lock our house whenever we went somewhere. In the 1960’s there were more travelers to our area because of the publicity of that area of Aravaipa Creek that would become the Aravaipa Canyon Primitive Area in 1969, and up until then Cliff and I didn’t worry too much because we trusted most of the many peo-ple who had to go through our property to enter the upstream inner canyon. When we were living on our downstream property in the 1980’s, some men, called “Wetbacks,” walked up to our house on the hill, and they were tired and hungry. One older man had an infect-ed eye, and we invited them to sit at our outdoor patio table to eat some sandwiches I made for them. I had no idea where they were headed, but assumed they were looking for work. I wonder that if we did that

now if we would get in trouble with the law, and if it would be dangerous. There later come a time when Aravaipa Creek residents became aware that there had been stealing in the area. One man’s friendliness and trust had ended up not so well for him. While on a trip, he had met a man who said he needed a place to stay one night, but this fellow traveler forged his host’s gift of a check for a larger amount of money. Those who use a computer also have to be very careful because of fraudulent email messages. A person should never reply to, click or enter any personal information if a suspicious e-mail is received. I once clicked on something that gave my computer a virus, because “porn” showed up and I couldn’t get rid of it. I was really embarrassed to take it to be repaired, thinking the re-pairman would think I watched porn, but he said what hap-pened to the computer wasn’t unusual. I felt better after he said that! It is too bad that we have to

Box 8 Hayden, AZ 85235Under ADEQ’s APP program, a permit is required for any facility with the potential to discharge to groundwater. There are four equally important demonstrations the mine must make to the Department to receive an APP: (1) compliance with Arizona aquifer water quality standards at a point of compliance; and (2) the facility must be designed and operated to achieve the greatest degree of discharge reduction achievable through the application of Best Available Demonstrated Control Technology (BADCT); (3) financial capability; and (4) technical capability.The Elder Gulch Tailings Facility is located at the Ray Mine Complex, in Pinal County. The balance of the Ray Mine Complex is permitted under a separate Area-Wide APP (Permit No. P-100525). The permit allows the deposition of tailings generated during the flotation process at the Ray Concentrator facility into the Elder Gulch Tailing Facility. Maximum deposition is 65,400 tons per day of dry weight tailings.
