5th Grade News Week of February 18, 2019
MATH 5A- This week, we will begin
working with greatest common factor and least common multiple. Both of these concepts will be so important to know to be successful with fractions. No quiz this week!☺
5B-This week, we are finishing our ordered pairs unit. Students will finish their projects today; this project will be graded as an assessment. Then, we will spend the rest of the week working on a Diocesan assessment.
LANGUAGE ARTS
*5A Reading – Our anchor story this week
is entitled, Everglades Forever. We will
focus on author’s purpose, explore how
the author explains scientific ideas, and
use prefixes as clues to determine
meanings of words. We will have our
vocabulary/comprehension quiz on
Friday!
*5B Reading – Our anchor story this week
is, Everglades Forever. We will focus on
vocabulary, author’s purpose, the use of
prefixes to determine new words, and how
scientific details are explained by the
author. We will have our comprehension
and vocabulary test on Friday!
*5English/Writing – The new spelling
pattern will be introduced on Tuesday. All
of the spelling words will be homophones
this week (words that sound the same but
are spelled differently). Therefore, the
students will be given the entire list!
Spelling test will be on Friday! Our
grammar focus for this week will be
learning about coordinating and
subordinating conjunctions. Grammar
test will also be Friday!
RELIGION This week we are finishing up chapter 4, which is focused on Sacramentals. This week, we will talk about different Saints who used Sacramentals, such as Mary. We will have a test on Friday! A study guide will go home this week.
SCIENCE I really enjoyed the
creativity of all of the water
cycle jingles and poems last
week! Super job 5th grade ☺
The class was given a study
guide last week to begin
reviewing for our next test.
The test will be on
Thursday this week and
will cover water
properties and the water
cycle.
SOCIAL STUDIES
This week we are finishing up
chapter 3, our focus is on life
in the colonies and conflict in
the colonies. We will talk
about different laws, wars,
taxes, and acts and how they
affected the settlers and land.

6th Grade News Week of February 18, 2019
MATH 6A- This week we will begin working with 6th grade fraction concepts. Our focus will be using fractions to solve word problems. No quiz this week, but there will be a Diocesan Assessment on Friday.
6B- This week we are working on writing and solving expressions. We will work on creating a menu this week. We will have a quiz on Friday!
SOCIAL STUDIES
We will be reviewing
everything we have
learned about
Mesopotamia. The
students will be given a
study guide and there will
be a test on Friday!
LANGUAGE ARTS
*6A Reading – We will continue
reading our novel, Hoot, this week.
We will continue to focus on imagery
and why it is important when reading
a novel. The new vocabulary words
will be introduced this week, but we
will not have a quiz this week.
*6B Reading – We are still reading
our novel, Hoot. We have been
focusing on imagery and
foreshadowing in the story and how
that can help us understand the
theme. We will have our
comprehension and vocabulary test
for Chapters 7-14 on Thursday!
*6English/Writing – We will continue
working on grammar and our daily
grammar edits. The 6th graders will
be focusing on text features this week
while learning more about Black
History Month.
RELIGION
The students will complete
Chapter 4 this week. We
will finish our lesson on
Joseph from the New
Testament. The students
will play a jeopardy review
game. The test will be on
Friday.
SCIENCE We had a fun Valentine STEM
last week creating ziplines to
send special V-Day messages
across the room!
The 6th graders have begun a
unit on Earth’s geologic history,
beginning with fossils. They are
learning about types of fossils,
how fossils may form, and how
fossils age can be determined.
