The scriptural sense of jus ce goes well beyond fair play. God’s jus ce is always

linked to compassion to bring about a more humane and caring world based on

right rela onships. This is the jus ce Mary Ward named as one of the three

characteris cs fundamental to her company. She knew God loved her, and her

response was love. She saw that all good works would flow from a heart

transformed by love. So she calls us to let the love of God, as revealed in Jesus’

life and ac ons, animate us and ensure our rela onships are right, with God and

neighbour and all of crea on. This requires inner freedom, to bring our whole

life before God and find God in all. And it requires integrity – great honesty with

ourselves and with others. Then we will be “just persons” apt for all good

works – or advocacy and assistance wherever these are needed, all flowing from

love, not self‐service.

This is what is asked of you, only this,

to act justly, love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:3‐5

We look forward to this year’s carnival to be held on Friday at Chandler.  With many students having a ended the holiday  swimming program  this year, we are  looking  for  some great  results.    I wish  to  thank and commend  the efforts of our House Captains in prepara on for this day.  Interested parents are very welcome to come along and enjoy the experience.  A warning to new parents, however, is that the cheering is robustly magnificent so you may wish to bring some ear plugs!  I know the girls won’t be offended.

Student Academic Achievement 2012

Four hundred years ago Mary Ward said, “Women in time will come to do much” and “Do good and do it well”.

Just like their peers of years past the Loreto College Coorparoo Year 12 graduates of 2012 have once again demonstrated these values in many ways but particularly when we consider their academic results.

While the table below shows the excellent distribution of Overall Positions (OPs) over recent years, we believe that the most important indicator of success is the percentage of students who were offered a Tertiary place

through The Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC).

For example, the group of columns on the far right of the table shows that 30% of the Year 12 Students of 2012 were awarded OPs in the 1-6 range, 55% in the 1-10 range and 84% in the 1-15 range. These fine

achievements resulted in 94.2% of these students being offered a tertiary place in February this year to continue their studies from 2013 onwards.

Indeed, these achievements are wonderful. However, they continue a trend which has been set over many years at Loreto College Coorparoo. Closer examination of the results from 2007-2012 show only small variations in the four measures displayed.

We offer our congratulations to our graduates of last year. We also thank all the staff who taught them so well and their parents who supported them through their difficult times in 2011 and 2012.

_tÇzâtzx WxÑtÜàÅxÇà French

It is just over a month since we returned from our school exchange trip to Bordeaux. I would like to thank Miss Stewart and Mrs Radvan for their assistance during the trip and I commend the girls on the wonderful way in which they represented Loreto in France. It was truly a privilege to accompany such an amazing group of young women on this three week journey. It is now our turn to welcome to Loreto the seventeen French students and their two accompanying teachers from our sister school, St Joseph de Tivoli, in Bordeaux. The French students will arrive in Brisbane on Sunday 24 February and will stay with the girls who travelled to France until Friday 8 March. Arrival and departure times will be given to the students as we are advised of these. During their stay, the French students will take part in classes at Loreto and visit places of interest around Brisbane. The exchange also gives all Loreto French students the opportunity to practise their French with real French people!

Japanese

It is not long until our friends from Kagoshima and Kanagawa in Japan arrive in Brisbane as well. The girls from Kagoshima will be in Brisbane from 10 February to 8 March. We thank the Dalton, Kelly and Lecatas families for hosting these visiting Japanese students. In addition we are looking for 12 Loreto families to host students from Yokohama in Japan. Girls do not have to be studying Japanese to host these students. The students from Yokohama are 15 year old girls who are very keen to improve their English. They will be in Brisbane from 5 March to 11 March. Please see the flyer in this newsletter for additional information. If you would like to host one of the Yokohama students, please return the slip to Mrs Hada-Baxter by Monday 11 February.

German

We are also busily preparing for the arrival in April of twenty-one girls from our sister school, the Maria Ward Schule, in Bad Homburg. The girls’ profiles have been matched and students have been communicating with one another over the holidays. There will be a meeting on Tuesday, 12 February regarding the 2013 German Exchange Program. This will cover details about the Homestay program and the return trip to Germany in November.

Thank you to those of you who have replied so far. However if you have not, please do so ASAP. See below for further details. The Welcome BBQ is on this Sunday 10 February at 3pm in the undercroft area near the tuckshop. This is a great opportunity to meet other Year 8 parents and P & F members. Importantly it provides an opportunity for the P & F to introduce itself and its services to you. We expect it to finish about 5pm. Bring the whole family along with refreshments and a spare chair. It is imperative that we know numbers for catering purposes so please email your reply to Trish Willing at [email protected], or complete the tear off slip below and return to the school office by Thursday 7 February. Thank you.

P & F Meeting Children grow up quickly and in what seems like the blink of an eye they have left school and moved onto the next phase of their lives. All this appears to unfold while you are at work or otherwise attending to your busy lives. However you can play a role in your kids’ schooling by contributing to the activities of the P & F Association. Why not start 2013 on the right note by attending the first P & F meeting of the year tonight (Tuesday 5 February) at 7.30pm. It doesn’t involve much time, you can simply sit and listen and decide if you want to get involved in future. We look forward to seeing you in room 605 on the bottom floor of the Gonzaga Barry Building. Please tell other parents.

Parent Year Level Representatives 2013 Please consider volunteering for a Parent Year Level Rep. These are not onerous tasks and we are happy to refer you to others who have acted as reps to determine if this is something you would like to do. fv|xÇvx WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá This year has started on an exciting note as we warmly welcome our new year 8s into the labs. The girls are currently learning about the safety precautions we take in the laboratory environment as well as the names of all of the strange looking pieces of apparatus they will be using over the next few years. I am sure the girls will see the lab as an amazing and fun place where they can explore how the world around them works.

A substantial amount of curriculum reform is occurring within the department in 2013, including new Chemistry and Physics work programs in Year 12 and the roll out of the Australian Science Curriculum in Year 9. We are also carrying out a lot of developmental work and initial implementation of the College’s new overarching learning framework across all classes. For the first time, all of our students have laptops or tablets and this adds an extra aspect of adventure to the year and presents some very exciting possibilities in terms of the creation and sharing of ideas. We also have some amazing digital laboratory equipment that can now be interfaced with the girls’ laptops to allow them to record, analyse, share and present data in real-time as an experiment unfolds. As well as presenting fantastic modes of learning, these types of innovations will certainly provide extraordinary opportunities for our girls to express themselves in the often forgotten creative aspect of scientific endeavour.

The University of Queensland Junior Physics Olympiad (JPhO) is a 5-day hands-on immersive programme for Year 10 students being held on campus from Monday 24th to Friday 28th of June. It encourages students to expand their knowledge of physics, confront and solve problems and focus on practical learning. As many students in Year 10 have not yet formally studied physics, JPhO assumes only a strong general knowledge of science and mathematics in attendees. JPhO includes lectures, tutorials, tours and interactive workshops and students will gain an insight into the work of UQ lecturers and researchers in the school of Mathematics and Physics. The program provides an excellent introduction to Senior Physics and is a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded students from all over the state. Any interested students can visit www.smp.uq.edu.au/jpho or see me at any time for additional information or application documents.

I would like to wish each of our Science students (over 500 in total) all the best for 2013 under the guidance of the excellent team here in the Science Department and I look forward to working with you, our parents and families, over what promises to be a fruitful and enjoyable year. Matthew Lourigan - Science Coordinator

HOST FAMILIES REQUIRED

March 5 – March 11 2013

This is a worthwhile opportunity

for your family to learn about

Japanese culture, while sharing

with your Japanese student the

lifestyle of an Australian family.

Families are asked to provide all meals and a friendly home for

their student

They will travel to and from school each day the same way as

arranged for your own children

The Japanese exchange students are 15 year old girls who are

very enthusiastic to come to Australia and improve their English

Will the student speak any English? Yes. However, as their English skills may be limited, we would ask that you speak clearly and slowly (but not in a patronising way) when communicating with them.

Will I have to cook Japanese food for the student? No. Your Japanese student is here to experience an Australian lifestyle. This includes spending mealtimes with your family, and eating what you and your family normally eat.

Is it OK if the parent/s work fulltime? Yes. During these times (e.g. after school), your Japanese student can spend time with your own children. Families who live near each other are encouraged to share transport, or other activities outside of school.

Do we need Blue Cards? No. Blue Cards are only necessary if you are a hosting a student for more than 10 days.

TEENAGERS, ALCOHOL

and DRUGS What your kids really

want and need to know about alcohol and drugs

Presented by PAUL DILLON

There is a great deal of anxiety and misinformation about drugs and their use. This short, sharp, one hour presentation by one of Australia’s most respected researchers in this field will give accurate, up-to-date information on what we know about young people, alcohol and drugs in Australia. It aims to empower parents with some basic information about current trends in alcohol and other drugs by examining the questions young people really want and need answers to. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will have heard from Paul Dillon earlier in the day – attending this information session will assist you to have useful conversations with your teenager and to respond to queries that may be raised.
