Japan Shotokan Karate Association (Great Britain)
The Japan Shotokan Karate Association was founded in Japan on
the 10th February 1999 by former JKA senior instructor Abe Keigo
8th Dan. It is one of the fastest growing Shotokan associations in the
world. Abe Sensei was born on October 28th 1938 in the town of
Iyoshi in Ehime prefecture on the island of Shikoken. When he was
18 years old he was accepted into the famous engineering program
at Nihon University in Tokyo. He moved from his small town to the
big city and began his college education. He began training at the
JKA Honbu Dojo with a young and very powerful sensei named
Nakayama Masatoshi who was to become his teacher and
grandmaster. During this time, Abe Sensei was informed by master
Nakayama that he was personally taught, not only by Funakoshi
Gichin shihan, but also by Funakoshi Yoshitaka, his son. This is
further reflected in the teachings of Abe Keigo sensei and the JSKA.
Where many famous, senior
JKA instructors spent only 5 or 6
years fulltime training at the
honbu dojo, before being sent
out to teach as shotokan pioneers
and ‘missionaries’ to other
countries, Abe sensei taught and
trained there, almost every day of
the year for around 35 years. JKA Honbu Dojo Instructors Keigo Abe 3rd row, far right.
KEIGO ABE
3
. Abe Sensei became an instructor at the
JKA in 1965 progressing to become an
important member of the honbu teaching
staff of the JKA instructor’s programme
and in 1985; he became JKA Director of
Qualifications and from 1990, Technical
Director of the JKA (Matsuno section), a position he held until retiring from the JKA on 31st
January 1999 before, and only at the behest of his students worldwide, forming the JSKA.
As one of the most senior JKA instructors of the time and through his unique position as a
confidante and senior student of Nakayama Masatoshi shihan, he was an integral part of the
evolution of Shotokan as we have come to know it. Abe sensei is also recognised and has
been credited as having taught and influenced
many of the senior Japanese instructors in the
world today, some heading their own
international groups, while in Japan his
reputation and standing is such that in the past
he has headed well over 50 international
delegations and visitations for both the JKA and the Japanese government. He is one of only
10 karateka ever to have refereed/judged in front of the current Emperor of Japan and the
only Shotokan stylist ever to have performed kata in front of him. This is such an honour
in Japan and only those who are greatly respected
ever attain this level of recognition. He is also an
official instructor with the Japanese Ministry of
Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology,
a national instructor and referee for the Japan Karate
Federation (JKF), a WKF/WUKO International
referee and when approached by Hollywood, he was chosen by Nakayama sensei personally
to choreograph the fight scenes in the James Bond film, You Only Live Twice.
4
Abe Sensei is also accomplished in the
tournament arena. He took 3rd place in the
first JKA National Championships, was
the captain of the Japanese team at the
second World Championships in Paris,
France, won 1st place at the 1973 JKA
International Friendship Tournament , and
took 1st place in both second and third JKF National Championships, as a representative of
Tokyo. A highly rated and dangerously competent JKA fighter in his younger days, he was
also responsible for devising the original rules for Ippon Shobu
competition in a manner which preserved Budo through the
concept ‘killing with one perfect, decisive blow’. Although not
well known, he is the fighter that kept the ‘Shotokan Tiger’ at
bay. He fought Enoeda sensei, who was already well renowned
for his skills, ferocity and strength, in a major Japanese
tournament. The fight went to 6 enchosen (extensions) with the
bout being won finally by Enoeda sensei, but only on hantei
(decision) which reflects Abe sensei’s skill, technical abilities,
spirit and tenacity in the dojo and his humility outside.
Abe Sensei has a great understanding of karate, from its
philosophical and historical past, through the formation and
development of Shotokan, into what he perceives the future to
offer and is quoted as saying ;“I feel that today’s Karate is
centred only on winning competitions and everyone trains
towards this end. This is far from the truth. I believe that the true purpose of Karate lies in
daily training with a goal to develop a strong mind and body and furthermore to contribute
to society in general”.
5
He came to establish the JSKA to realise what he
himself sees as the true Karate purpose. The JSKA
philosophy is: 1) Learn self-defence as a martial art
(budo); 2) Improve technique as an exercise; 3) Through
karate training, develop a healthy body and mind.
To summarise, in an interview published in a UK karate
magazine, a member of his Shihankai is quoted as saying
about Abe sensei ’ The man is a living legend and a part
of history, when he teaches, what you are getting is Shotokan with a capital ‘S’, it is
delivered as it was always taught at the JKA honbu. He teaches as Nakayama shihan taught
him and teaches as he himself taught in the JKA instructor’s programme, a programme that
produced many great Japanese instructors. He is one of a small handful of very senior
Shotokan karate-ka alive today who can deliver this level of
instruction and claim this pedigree. He epitomises the ‘do’
in both karate-do and bu-do, a great man and a great
teacher and the Shotokan legacy, through him, definitely
continues’.
‘There are of course many good karate instructors and
many good associations, but there is simply only one Keigo
Abe and only one Japan Shotokan Karate Association’

Japan Shotokan Karate Association (Great Britain)
To all member federations and friends of the Japan Shotokan Karate Association
JSKA (Great Britain) has pleasure in inviting you on behalf of Keigo Abe sensei and the JSKA
Shihankai, to the JSKA World Open Championship 2008, to be held at the famous Manchester
Velodrome, Manchester, England.
• Manchester is located at the
virtual heart of the British Isles
and is easily accessed via
motorways from all English
Channel ports and all major
airports, of which Manchester
has one of the largest
international airports in the UK.
• Manchester is one of Britain's largest metropolitan conurbations, set in the old county
of Lancashire, on the west side of the Pennine Hills, which form the backbone of the
country. It was here that the modern world was born through the enterprise, industry
and early development of its merchant skills, the coincidental admixture of climate,
suitable natural resources and geography, the inventiveness of its people, the early
building of transport infrastructures, and a powerful industrial entrepreneurial spirit
which has long typified the region. The
county still produces more than half of
Britain's manufactured goods and
consumables.
• Manchester has been inhabited for more
than 2000 years, since Roman General
7
Julius Agricola built a fort just north of the site of present day Manchester, though it
was not until the 18th century that this hitherto remote and inconspicuous little town
sprang into the forefront of world attention
by being the birthplace of the Industrial
Revolution. The city and innumerable small
towns and villages surrounding it saw the
rapid growth of factories manufacturing
merchandise for the textile industry, and
became the prime region for this industry
until its decline in the 1950s, when cheaper
foreign imports sounded the death knell for
the region's pre-eminence.
• Manchester is a big place. While 2.6 million
people live within its actual boundaries, over
7 million others live in the wider region,
making it second only to London in Great Britain. For 11 million people living within
50 miles of the City, it is the place where they come to work, or to shop or to visit the
many attractions and entertainments which only a large city such as this could hope to
offer.
• Manchester is an international centre. "The Times" newspaper places 80 of its top 100
companies in the city and over 60 Foreign and International Banks operate from here.
Some 46,000 students currently study for Higher Education at its colleges and
universities. More than 90 world airlines fly into Manchester Airport from 165
destinations world wide. In 1993 over 13 million
people passed through the airport terminal, and that
figure is soon expected to surpass 22 million.
• The Metropolitan County of Greater Manchester
has the most extensive motorway network in the
United Kingdom. It is accessible by road, rail and
air. Manchester is 2½ hours from London by
Intercity trains, of which there are on average 17
8
departures every day. The city has the UK's first modern street operating rail system -
Metrolink - which other UK cities are eager to emulate.
• It is cosmopolitan - it offers more than 30 styles of foreign cuisine, with distinctive
Chinese and Asian areas of specialty. It has 80 golf courses, more theatres than any
other city outside London, two Premier League football teams, two major television
companies, three Universities, two symphony orchestras, and many small chamber
ensembles. It leads the field in music. Since the mid-1980s, Manchester popular
music and bands have dominated music charts.
• It is also, by virtue
of its central
location within the
British Isles, an
excellent base for
tourism. Within 1
hour's drive are 3
major National
Parks (the Lake
District, the Peak
District, and the Snowdonia National Park). Also within an hour's drive are the
seaside towns of the Fylde coast of Lancashire (Blackpool, Lytham St Annes,
Southport, Morecambe, Fleetwood), as well as the great cities of Lancaster, York,
Chester and Liverpool.
• The City also has many fine listed buildings. Within the greater region are 170 tourist
attractions including some 34 historic houses, country parks, moors, plains, hills and
8 theme parks all within an hour's drive away. For people in the locality, Manchester
is a place to live - for some it is a place to do business - and for others it is
increasingly becoming a place to visit and enjoy as a Tourist.
Each nation is requested to bring two national flags and their national anthem on CD, to
the tournament. (The Union Jack will be available on site but home countries should bring their
national; Flags e.g. Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales)

4th JSKA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ‘08 22nd -24th August in Manchester England
(send to [email protected] or Fax +1246 563 630 by 24th July, 2008)
After consultation with the JSKA Technical Committee, the JSKA-GB have ordered wire embroidered blazer/jacket badges and association ties, carrying the JSKA mon, for use at all official functions, refereeing etc. To ensure that we have ordered enough and to cover the cost of the order itself, we wish to know how many sets are required by each group. The sets will be £21 each and this will cover package and postage to your home country. It is the recommendation that all JSKA officials, referees, judges etc will wear both badge and tie at the World Championships next year. Ties and badges may be bought separately for £9 (ties) and £12 (badges) but all must be paid for prior to receipt of goods.
