From the Desk of Deacon Alan Doty

Meet our RCIA Candidates

Last September the collaborative decided to have a joint RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program with St. Catherine of Sienna Parish in Norwood. There were five in the class- three from St. Catherine’s and two from Blessed Sacrament. Weekly classes were taught by the priests and deacon of St. Catherine’s and Deacon Alan.

After months of study, prayer, and discernment RCIA candidates normally receive the Sacraments in the midst of the assembly during Easter Vigil. Sadly, this year the ceremony had to be postponed. Bishop Reed graciously offered to receive the candidates into the Church this month, during a Mass in the chapel at Blessed Sacra-ment. Due to the continued emergency the ceremony will be open only to the candidate’s families, sponsors, RCIA classmates and teachers.

RCIA formation is a journey that aims to ignite and strengthen faith in Christ and His values by reflecting on God’s Word, the life of the Catholic Community, liturgy, beliefs, and apostolic works. For those who are called, the process culminates in full membership in the Catho-lic Church, through the Sacraments of Initiation. People come to RCIA from many different backgrounds and places. Some may never have been baptized and others were raised in a Protestant community. Catholics who never received the sacraments beyond baptism, who were never catechized, or who have fallen away and want to learn more about the faith, and any others who feel called to communion with the Church are welcome. Our candidates this year are representative of that diver-sity.

Deborah Jones was born in Weymouth and now lives in Walpole with her daughter. Last year she started attending Blessed Sacrament at the invi-tation of her neighbor and was surprised to see Bishop Reed, who she had been watching on Catholic TV for years! After participating in RCIA and by the grace of God Deborah will be re-ceived into the Church, have her first commun-ion, and be confirmed by Bishop Reed on July 18.

We welcome Deborah with great joy into the Catholic Church!

Ed Henkes lives in Norfolk with his wife Nicole and Charlie, their six-month-old son. Ed attended Protestant services and then, during their en-gagement, Ed started to come to Mass with Ni-cole. Last year he made the decision to enter fully into the Catholic Church. Nicole accompa-nied Ed throughout the RCIA program. By the grace of God, Ed will be received into the Church, have his first communion, and be con-firmed by Bishop Reed on July 18, and baby Char-lie will be baptized that same day! Join me in joy-fully welcoming both and Charlie and Ed into the Catholic Church!

We are in the process of forming an RCIA program that will begin this summer with classes starting in Septem-ber and that will be held in Walpole. If you or someone you know is interested in joining us, please contact Dea-con Alan at [email protected].

A successful RCIA program is a collaborative wide en-deavor. Depending on the size of the class we may have a need for sponsors, catechists, prayer partners, facilita-tors and others to assist. If you are willing to help in one of these or any other way, please contact Deacon Alan.

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 19, 2020

WELCOME BACK!

The Archdiocese of Boston has provided guidelines as we slowly re-open our churches. We ask that everyone follow these guidelines strictly and be patient as we begin to move forward.

1. Cardinal O’Malley has dispensed everyone, of our Sunday obligation indefinitely. With this in mind, people in vulnerable populations (over the age of 65), especially the elderly and those who have existing health concerns are encouraged to watch Mass from their homes on the television or internet (CatholicTV). People who are not able to wear a mask for health reasons should also stay home and partake in the cele-bration of Mass through CatholicTv and the internet.

2. Mass Schedule: Blessed Sacrament Parish 4pm Mass on Saturday, and 8am, 9:30am, 11am Mass on Sunday. St. Mary's 4pm on Saturday and 7:30am, 9am and 11:30am on Sun-day. There will be no hospitality until further notice. Churches will open 15 minutes before the scheduled time for Mass. Daily Mass at 8:30am will be held at St. Mary's Monday-Wednesday and Blessed Sacrament Thursday-Saturday. St. Mary's will be locked after Daily Mass. Private prayer continues in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. 3. Attendees at the Masses will be severely limited due to the need to maintain distancing. Families and those who live to-gether may occupy one bench or row. Single individuals will be distanced from each other by 6 feet. When the churches are “full” based on these seating restrictions, parishioners will be asked to attend another mass. Attendees will need to reserve a spot each week on our SignUp portal or call the parish offic-es. Also, it is very important that you please make sure you arrive on time or early for Mass since there is an added step now with signing people in. To reserve a spot for either a WEEKEND or DAILY Mass or to VOLUNTEER please use our website or call the parish offices (Blessed Sacrament 508-668-4700 x1024 or St. Mary's 508-668-4974) to have your name added to the Mass attendee list. **Updated SignUp's will be available on our website on Mon-day and will close on Friday at 3pm so that we can prepare for the weekend. Also, people need to register each week for a Mass time slot and due to our space limitation, it is important that you cancel your registration if necessary so the spot can be offered to another parishioner.

4. Both churches will utilize one entryway (Main entrance at both BSP & STM – handicap entrance will be available too). Parishioners will be asked to proceed up the center aisle and either sit on the inside pews or continue around to the outside pews. Keeping in mind the 6’ social distance rule.

5. Missallettes have been removed and there will be no con-gregational singing, nor will choirs be allowed until further notice. Mass will not begin with a procession nor will there be an offertory procession. Baskets will be placed at the doors for

the offertory collection. We encourage on-line giving and mail ins. There will be no sign of peace or the holding of hands dur-ing the Our Father.

6. All parishioners over the age of 5 are asked to wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth during Mass. At Com-munion time, parishioners are asked to come to communion by the center aisle and return by the side aisle, observing the 6 feet distance markers on the floor. Everyone should leave their seat or bench, even if you do not plan to receive Com-munion, in order to avoid people having to step over one an-other. Please fully extend your arm with hands cupped as the priest/Eucharistic Minister drops the host into your hand. Please step to the side, where the floor is marked, lift up the bottom of your mask and place the host in your mouth before returning to your seat.

7. At the end of Mass, please leave the church immediately by the front side doors but do so, row by row, maintaining the 6-foot distance requirement. Please leave in an orderly fashion and please go directly to your car – there is no gathering al-lowed.

8. Daily Masses have resumed at 8:30am and will be Monday-Wednesday at St. Mary’s and Thursday - Saturday at Blessed Sacrament. Sign up on our website for Daily Mass or call St. Mary's 508-668-4974 or Blessed Sacrament 508-668-4700 to place your name on the attendee list. 9. We are in need of volunteers to help manage the flow of foot traffic, ushering at each Mass and to help clean between Masses. Please sign up on our website.

10. Only priests and deacons are allowed in the sacristy.

11. Confessions: Wednesdays 7-8 pm Blessed Sacrament Sanc-tuary (Saturday 3pm Confessions have been suspended).

12. Parishioners are invited and encouraged to bring their own hand sanitizer to Mass. We will also have hand sanitizer availa-ble throughout the church.

*In the case of our discovering that someone at Mass tests posi-tive for COVID-19, we want to be able to inform all of you so that, in consultation with your physician, you can take the appropri-ate steps. If you registered to come to a Mass, we already have your con-tact information, and will reach out to you if we learn that some-one here has tested positive. If you did not register, and if you wish to be contacted, please call or email the rectory with the appropriate contact infor-mation so that you can receive a notification. Even if you do not choose to leave your name, please know that we will make any announcement of a positive test on the parish website as well, so please check the website on a regular basis. Also, If you are not feeling well please stay home and if you find you need to change your weekend plans please cancel your timeslot so that we can offer it to someone else. Thank you.

90 D NOW It is at times like these our faith re-minds us that we are never truly alone, even as we face unprecedented challenges as a parish community. Though we are not able to join together in the celebration of the Eucharist, we continue daily to pray for the health of you and your loved ones.

I am reaching out to you about an effort created by a member of the laity with concern for our parishes during this time of crisis. It is a special, 90-day campaign that will provide offertory sup-port directly to the parish.

This special initiative asks, if possible, for parish-ioners to rally around their parish by making a special daily offertory commitment for the next 90 days. This effort is intended to supplement weekly offertory gifts, given the challenges of the current crisis. Should you choose to join in this effort, the Archdiocese has created an easy-to-use link to donate.

The link is available by r using this link: https://bcatho-lic.sites.bostoncatholic.org/90DaysYourParish

We are incredibly moved by this effort and for-ward this information for your consideration.

We understand many of you may not be able to contribute to this special offertory collection giv-en the economic impact this pandemic has had on your personal finances. We remain extremely grateful for your prayers of support for our par-ish family.

P F The Propagation of the Faith invites you to witness the miracle of Fatima as told through the eyes of Sister Lucia, one of the three Shepherd Children of Fatima. Starring Sonia Braga as Sister Lucia, this private, pre-screening will be held in the parking lot of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Parish, 920 Trapelo Road, Waltham. Show time is 8:30 p.m. on Sunday August 9th. An offering of $50 per car, as a gift to the mis-sions, helps to continue the lifesaving, faith affirming work of the Propagation of the Faith worldwide! Mis-sionaries are prayerfully grateful for your support! A pre-sealed Fatima gift box is included for your enjoy-ment. Hurry! Go to propfaithboston.org or call at 617-542-1766, or email us at [email protected] reserve your space now!

O Dear friends,

As we move through a cautious reopening, let ’s keep the doors open at two great parishes!

If you haven’t already, sign up for weekly online giving on our website at www.walpolecatholic.net and forget the enve-lopes and the collection basket! This will ensure our ability to maintain our beautiful churches and grounds and to carry on, in good times and in bad

Our parishes depend solely on your generous gifts in order to pay for the salaries and benefits of our two priests and pastoral team members; groundskeeping, utility bills, insurance premi-ums, and necessary repairs in our churches and parish buildings. Now more than ever, your gen-erosity will ensure that the good work of our parishes can continue after this crisis ends, and also the long-term financial stability of both St. Mary and Blessed Sacrament Parish.

If you would rather not use electronic giving, please mail your donations or slide them through the mail slot at the Blessed Sacrament parish office. It is helpful if you can include your offertory envelopes, if you have them. Mailing addresses: Blessed Sacrament 10 Diamond St. Walpole, MA 02081. St. Mary's 176 Washington St. E. Walpole, MA 02032. V P G

We are offering a “Virtual Prayer Group” every Satur-day morning from 9:00 – 10:00am. Group baptisms will still be taking place on the sec-ond Sunday of the month at 1pm at St. Mary's and again at 2pm, if numbers warrant. Group baptisms at Blessed Sacrament take place on the third Sunday of the month at 12:30pm and 1:30pm, if needed.

Please feel free to contact our Baptism Coordinators at 508-668-4974. You can leave a message and your call will be returned.

Cardinal Seán O'Malley has announced a Year of the Eucharist to bolster the faith of those who already believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and to encourage those who struggle with this belief. Over the course of the next year and a half, the Cardinal invites all Catholics in the Archdiocese of Boston to learn more about the Eucharist and to spend more time before the Eucharistic Lord, ask-ing Him to reveal Himself to you.

One way to learn more about the Real Presence and help others is to become a Collaborative Mission-ary or Witness. A Missionary will commit to prayer, participate in Collaborative events and promote the power of the Eucharist. A witness will have the opportunity to share a testimony on the impact the Eu-charist has had on their life. Please feel free to contact our Coordinator Richard Raab at [email protected] or call 608-770-7754.

If you are willing to commit to the three P's - Prayer, Participation, and Promotion, please register through Constant Contact and the Archdiocese will send you a Eucharistic Missionary pin, prayer card, and commitment guide. Each person who registers will then be invited to a virtual commis-sioning in June. The exact date will be announced in May. Please note, the Archdiocese will forward each coordi-nator the names of those who sign up in your our community, (a person doesn't have to be a part of any one parish or school to become a mission-ary. The more people participating the better!)

S T S How should we read the Bible in the 21st century? Often we hear that the Bible is unsci-

entific or even immoral. Some simply say an ancient text has no claim on our lives to-

day. Over four, seminar-style sessions we will look at reading the Bible within the Tradi-

tion of the Church according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Second Vatican

Council’s teaching Dei Verbum, and Pope Benedict XVI’s Verbum Domini. The goal of our time together will be to

deepen our Faith in the Word who is “the same yesterday, today and forever” (Heb. 13:8) and equip students for

evangelism in the mission fields of their schools.

The sessions are aimed towards students in high school and college but open to anyone. The sessions will hap-

pen mid to late July. The exact times, dates, and location will be determined collectively by the group interested

in order to accommodate the most possible students.

The instructor is Josh Lehman. A local catechist, Josh holds an M.A. in Theology from Holy Apostles College and

Seminary. He is a father of 5 and a graduate student in philosophy at Boston College.

If interested send an e-mail to Josh at [email protected].

Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament began at Blessed Sacrament Chapel in Walpole on Sunday, October 20, 2019. From that day for-ward, there will be a place in the area, a chapel of quiet and beauty, where you may go at any hour of the day or night just to sit in the pres-ence of Jesus, exposed for Adoration. Imagine, a holy place so close, the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, always open for prayer.

There is always room for more people, young and older, to make a commitment of one hour a week…and it’s easy to do online.

Just point the browser on your phone, tablet or other device to: AdorationPro.org/Walpole and click on Weekly Commitment

Sign up for any hour you wish and you can al-ways manage your commitment at that site. We hope you visit and find the beauty in sitting with Jesus. God Bless.

T RCIA: A J F

Since Jesus invited His first followers to, “Come, follow me”, the image of journey has been used to describe Christian faith. A journey marked with moments of con-version along the way….. from unbelief to faith, from sin to repentance, from painful isolation to the joyful experience of a loving community, from fear to love.

Faith, conversion, repentance, celebration and commu-nity – five basic elements that are present in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The RCIA provides a small group setting where the journey of faith and mo-ments of conversion can be celebrated within the local Church community. The purpose of the RCIA is literally “to set our hearts on spiritual gifts” as St. Paul wrote to the church in Corinth.

Join us on the journey! We will be beginning this fall. If you, a family member, or a friend is curious about be-coming Catholic, or was born into the Catholic Faith and is looking to deepen their faith, ask them to contact Deacon Alan at [email protected].
