Shinsaibashisuji became prosperous in the Edo period because the street was located between Shinmachi, used to be a red light district, and Dotonbori, a theater district.

According to "Naniwa Marukomoku" published in 1748 (Enkyo 5), there were various kinds of stores dealing with lacquer-ware, books, antique, instruments, paperhangers, and ornaments in Shinsaibashisuji Shopping Center. This tells us that Shinsaibashisuji was already a place for shopping in the Edo period.

There are two temples, Kita-mido ( House for Honganji priests) and Minami-mido (Namba Branch Temple), though both temples were razed in the Great Osaka Air Raids in 1945. The present buildings were constructed in 1964. Incidentally, the avenue linking Kita-mido and Minami-mido is called "Midosuji" with reference to the names of both branch temples.

One of the most popular and important streets in Osaka, Mido-Suji runs from north of the Kita Area to as far as Namba in the Minami Area. Often referred to as the "Champs Elysee of the Orient", the avenue is lined with a fabulous border of gingko trees, which cast lovely shade in the summer. When the leaves turn yellow in autumn the atmosphere of the avenue is even more romantic as people walking along a carpet of golden leaves. It's a fabulous way to enjoy nature in an urban setting

In the night time, many lively stalls appeared. Those stalls grew bigger and stretched south to Ebisbashi

This narrow, stone-paved lane next to Dotombori Street retains the flavor and atmosphere of old Osaka. Cozy and quaint, lined on both sides with small food shops and cafes, it earned instant fame with Sakunosuke Oda's novel "Meoto Zenzai" (Sweet Bean Broth for Two). It is also famous for its moss-covered Fudo-myo statue, known as Mizukake Fudo. "Mizukake" means splashing water and " Fudo-myo" means unmovable deity. Many people visit the statue to wish for good luck in romance and business splashing on its head. The beautiful stone-paved pathways here, and the moss-covered Buddhist figure, represent the cultured aspects of Osaka.

Dotombori is a symbol of the Minami Area and a mecca for the kuidaore food culture of Osaka. Dozens of restaurants line the Dotomborigawa River, and large famous billboards draw diners'attention. On the north side of the river, where geisha used to entertain their customers, are now small bars and restaurants squeezed together in rows. The southern side of the river is the center of the Dotombori area, which was once known as the theater district. Nowadays, colorful neon signs and flash signboards enliven the area, showing that the district still represents the passion of Osakans. Dotombori has so many restaurants and bars packed along its narrow streets and alleys that it's impossible to count them. Their colorful signs and decorated entrances create a symphony of light and design that dazzle the eye. Here is where you can experience the true meaning of kuidaore, and stuff yourself with Osaka's great tasting reasonably priced food to your ultimate culinary satisfaction.

This is the only museum in the world that features a permanent exhibition of Kamigata Ukiyoe, or Kamigata woodblock prints. Kamigata Ukiyoe were printed and sold in Kamigata―which is what the Osaka-Kyoto region was commonly called during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The Kamigata region, which in those days had a much longer tradition of art and culture behind it than did Edo area (present-day Tokyo), created woodblock prints which were quite different from those of the Edo area. They were much more realistic, tending to express the true personalities of their subjects, especially of the great Kabuki actors of the day. The Kamigata Ukiyoe Museum has some 50 works in its permanent exhibition.

Bunraku is based on a stylized chanted narrative form called “joruri”, which is thought to have originated in the 15th century when blind itinerant entertainers recited ancient tales to accompaniment by lute. The 16th century saw the introduction of a more sophisticated musical instrument resembling the modern shamisen, whose plaintive tones were well-suited to joruri. This instrument helped joruri to flourish in both the Kyoto and Edo areas

Osaka is the birthplace of “Bunraku”, a fascinating form of traditional puppet theater. The large puppets are usually manipulated by three puppeteers, whose close control enables them to move the puppets with extraordinary grace and human-like expression.

Until the end of the Meiji Era, the Kuromon Ichiba Market used to be called Emmeiji Market, because there was once a large temple called Emmeiji nearby. Since there used to be a black gate northeast of this temple, the marketplace later came to be called"Kuromon Ichiba Market"(Black Gate Market). The market has a total length of close to 600 meters with 170 shops, the vast majority of which specialize in the freshest and best quality meat, vegetables, eggs and other ingredients from around the country and abroad. Although well over half of total sales are for the business (professional chef) market, Kuromon Ichiba caters also to the general public. For more than 170 years, everyone from restaurant chefs to housewives have come here, drawn by the taste, freshness and variety of its products. On Dec.31st, more than 150,000 people come to market in order to prepare foods for new years' day.

To the west of Tennoji Park is Shin-Sekai, one of Osaka's most interesting neighborhoods. This area has remained largely untouched over the years. At the beginning of the 20th Century the area flourished, and pulsed with amusement attractions and restaurants that drew enormous crowds. Today, little of the bustle remains, but many old eating and drinking establishments can still be found. One highlight is Jan-Jan Yokocho Lane, which runs along one side of Shin-Sekai. This dining and shopping street is where laborers who rebuilt Osaka after World War II gathered, and it still contains Japanese-style pubs and cheap cafeteria-like restaurants with highly unique menus that include hormone-yaki (barbecued cattle organs) and kushi-yaki (Japanese shish kebab); it's an entertainment district for locals, much as it has always been. The name of this alley comes from the "jan jan" strumming sound of the Japanese banjo that waitresses used to play to attract customers.

Billiken is a good-luck figure who represents "things as they ought to be." Florence Pretz, a Missouri art teacher and illustrator, patented her "design for an image" of the jovial creature in 1908.When the Luna Park was opened at Shin-Sekai in 1911, a statue of Billiken was put in Tsutenkaku. It became popular for its unique figure, and believed as a good luck charm.

The Tsutenkaku is a new structure, rebuilt after World War II. The original Tsutenkaku was built in 1912, and it shocked the people of that era; with a height of 64 meters, it was the tallest structure in the Orient. It was also one of the two great attractions of Shin-Sekai at that time, the other being Luna Park, an amusement park with an area of more than 132,000 square meters. Eventually the Tsutenkaku, which reminded local residents of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, became the symbol of Osaka. But then in 1943 a fire broke out in the tower, and it was later dismantled to supply steel to the wartime economy. After various difficulties were overcome, the long-awaited new Tsutenkaku was erected in 1956.
