WALK THE TALK / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / Our goal is not just “to know” but to “act upon what we

know.” (His Word, Our Walk!) We encourage you to discuss the following questions with family, friends or your group.

For Discussion: 1. As you think about pursuing holiness,

can you picture the temptation in certain areas of your life to pursue “your will” rather

than “God’s will”? What’s the best way for you to deal with those temptations?

2. Share stories of when you had to immediately throw away your clothes because they were filthy or had a bad odor.

3. Why does God not just take the impurities of our hearts away from us? Why do you think we have to do it?

4. What do we miss when we fail to love one another deeply from the heart?

5. Which of the vices on the list do you most struggle to get rid of? What are some healthy paths to alleviate malice, envy, slanderous thoughts, deceit and hypocrisy?

6. Do you have a deep craving to walk with God? How do we develop an even greater desire to be with Him and like Him?

TWO LESSONS FOR OUR STUDY OF SALVATION 1. As a believer you have a new _______ and a living ______. 2. This living hope calls us to a ________ life.

IN 1 PETER WE SEE . . . 1. ___________ (1 Peter 1:1 - 2:10); 2. ___________ (1 Peter 2:11 - 4:11); 3. ___________ (1 Peter 4:12 - 5:14)

WHAT DOES GOD ASK OF US WHO HAVE RECEIVED HIS GIFT OF SALVATION? 1 Peter 1:13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

Since no greater gift could ever be given than the gift of salvation in Christ, no gift then could ever demand a greater response. What does God ask of us who have received his gift of salvation? We find there are three things he requires as a proper response.

RESPONSIBILITY NO. 1 – SET YOUR HOPE  1 Peter 1:13 “Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.”

1. What does it mean to “set your hope?”

Align your life to that which you believe is coming: the revelation of Jesus Christ (apokalupsei) (the second coming).

2. What do we set our hope on?

The grace we’re going to receive at that time.

3. So how do we do that? - Two phrases in v. 13

a. First - “preparing your minds for action.” (ESV)

Literally, this means to tie something that's loose.

Peter applies it metaphorically to the mind. Tie down the loose ends of your distracted mind.

b. Second – “keeping sober-minded” (ESV) This literally means to avoid drunkenness. So metaphorically it means to avoid being intoxicated by the world.

4. Why is this so important?

Because, I believe the response we make on this will affect whether we are living for temporary things or eternal things. And that will bring ramifications on the day Jesus returns.

Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Colossians 3:2 “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

RESPONSIBILITY NO. 2 – BE HOLY 1 Peter 1:14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

How do I go about that?

1. By not conforming to or giving in to those desires that ran the show before you were saved. (v.14)

2. And then I start living according to a new standard. (v. 15)

RESPONSIBILITY NO. 3 – LIVE IN REVERENT FEAR 1 Peter 1:17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.

OUR HEARTFELT RESPONSE: 1 Peter 1:22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.

1. Peter’s message has emphasized preparing the _______ for action (1 Peter 1:13, 14, 18). He next directs us to live out of a _______ ___________ (1 Peter 1:7).

a. Faith and hope in God (1 Peter 1:21) produce ___________ love for one another.

b. The depth of love for one another has no limits. We are to love ___________ from the __________.

1.) Love deeply because people last forever. 1 Peter 1:23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

2.) Love deeply because people do not last forever. 1 Peter 1:24 For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you

1 Peter 2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.

2. We need to remove the _______________ of our own heart. a. We remove them like discarding old clothes (see Colossians 3:8-14; also Galatians 5:19-26) b. This list might be called “community-destroying vices”. They describe the potential inner problems of the heart.

1.) _____________ is ill-will towards others. 2.) _________ and _______________ are speaking or acting out of ulterior motives. 3.) __________ is wanting what another has.
