Hello! My name is Danielle Tolman and I am so excited to be working with the Boone County Cooperative Extension Office this summer! I was born and raised here in Boone County, and have been a Burlington resident all my life. I

graduated from Cooper High School in 2014, and am now a senior at Northern Kentucky University. After this summer semester, I will graduate with a bache-lor’s degree in Organizational Leader-ship. In my free time, I love to travel, spend time with friends, and help with

my church. A fun fact about me is that I am an assistant wedding and event coordinator on the weekends! I have been so interested in the work of the Extension Office since I was young, and after being surrounded by friends who were so involved in 4-H, I knew that that was the office I wanted to be involved with! I have always admired the Extension Office and the 4-H program for their dedication to building strong communities and youth, and I can't wait to play a role in that!

ALLSTATE GRANT RECEIVED The Boone County 4-H Council was pleased to receive $1,000 from The Allstate Foundation in hon-or of Allstate Agent Rebecca Utz’s volunteerism. We are pleased to partner with Allstate and their commitment to making our hometowns better, safer places to live.

JASON BROWN, 4-H PROGRAM ASSISTANT, RECEIVES AWARD

Boone County 4-H Assistant Jason Brown received the Parent Power Award presented by the Boone

County Board of Education at its year-end meeting on May 10. Jason earned the award for his role in organizing and leading the Civil War after school program at Goodridge Elementary School and Thornwilde Elementary School. The interactive three-day program brings history to life with hands-on learning through Civil War-era

games, campfire songs, military strategy, marching formation and even taste tests of foods that real soldiers would have eaten.

YOUNG GUNS With summer in full swing, the Young Guns are preparing for the annual 4-H state horse show at the end of this month. Recently, the Young Guns had a successful season debut at the Northern Kentucky Horse Network’s annual drill team competition at the Alexandria Fairgrounds. The Young Guns are always excited about getting new members! If you are interested in becoming a member or you have questions about our club, please contact Joyce Voet at 859-630-4566.

THANK YOU! Many thanks to the certified livestock leaders and volunteers who organized and presented at the 4-H livestock club meetings this past year. We offered twenty-two educational hours. 4-H Livestock Club members are required by the state to acquire six educational hours each year. The adults who pre-sented at the meetings volunteered their time and efforts to our youth, giving them great learning op-portunities and experiences. Thanks for a job well done!

4-H LIVESTOCK PARTICIPATION AT STATE FAIR

Don’t forget that you need to compete at a dis-trict show to qualify to compete at the State Fair in Louisville in August.

APRIL 4-H LIVESTOCK CLUB MEETING Attendees at the April meeting had a simulated experience of choosing a livestock animal for a

project beginning with purchasing an animal through showing it at the coun-ty fair. They took out a loan to purchase the animal and cared for it through the duration of the project culmi-

nating with the county fair competi-tion. At the end, they found out if they had a gain or loss of money based on events and costs to raise the animal. This simulation was a great eye-opening experience for the participants. Thanks to Becky Utz for presenting at the meeting.

SPECIAL NEEDS LIVESTOCK SHOW On May 12, the Boone County 4-H Livestock Club sponsored a livestock show for children with multi-ple disabilities. Eight children participated and over fifteen club members attended. Many thanks to the volunteers, leaders, and parents who helped make the day possible. Also, many thanks to the people who brought animals to the event. It was a great day!

4-H LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST On May 19, the Boone County 4-H Livestock Judg-ing Team traveled to Danville, KY to compete in the Boyle County judging contest. They are preparing for the state competition in June. The team had a great day!

PHOTO FREZNY CLUB This summer, Photo Frenzy Club will be hosting four workshops that will include topics such as: how lighting makes a difference, the basics of composi-

tion, candid vs. formal shots of peo-ple and animals, and landscape photography. You can attend any or all sessions, and you do not have to register. Meetings will be held at the Extension Office on Wednesday nights from 6:30-8:00 pm on June

13, June 27, July 11, and July 25. Our last ses-sion on July 25 will also include a Photoshop tutori-al. We will also meet on Wednesday, August 1 at the Nature Center on Camp Ernst Road to take pic-tures while touring the facility. All 4-H members ag-es 9-18 are welcome to join us, and parents are welcome to stay as well. It is recommended that you bring a camera and not just a cell phone to take pictures with. Please email us at [email protected] with any questions.

KEEP CALM AND COOK ON GROUP Herbs (and spices) are used to provide lots of flavor to foods. Often times, fresh herbs provide even more flavor than their dried counterpart. However,

most fresh herbs are quite costly at the store, and can spoil before all of it is used. A garden plant costs about the same as the container in the produce section. Fortunately, many are quite

easy to grow in the yard (or in pots). Plus, if you grow perennial herbs, these will come back year after year. Examples include oregano, thyme, mint, lemon balm, chives, tarragon, sage, and sometimes rosemary. They often spread and grow as fast as weeds. If they get too tall and/or flower, they may need to be cut back. The cut herbs can be rinsed and dried, tied in small bunches with kitchen twine, and hung to dry. When the herbs are very dry (brittle), the leaves can be removed from their stems and placed in clean containers. Chives that have been in the garden for a few years can also produce lots of pretty purple flowers that can be put in vases. Annual herbs include basil, parsley, dill, and cilantro. Growing herbs at home is also con-venient; you can just cut the amount your recipe calls for from the plant and leave the rest! To find out even more about herbs, talk to someone at a greenhouse, or search the topic online by typing: Kentucky Cooperative Extension growing herbs.

PAWS AND CLAWS CAT CLUB We had an interesting meeting on last month, with several members bringing cats. Christy Eastwood

reviewed how to show cats at a cat show. Members also had the opportunity to practice showing a cat. It was decided that there will not be a cat show at the Boone County Fair this year. Members felt more comfortable with having a cat show at the regular meeting in September. Our next meeting will be on June

13, and we will practice for showing a cat again. All members are encouraged to bring their cats to this meeting. We will also play cat charades. The club has been a club of very active and involved members and parents. Their acts of service to the community have been to educate the public and accept donations, which are given to non-profit groups to help with spaying and neutering cats. Some members participated in the May 12 Community Fair along with the Wiggles & Wags Dog Club. The cat and dog clubs will also be participating in the Pet Fest at Boone Woods on June 24 from 11:00 am-4:00 pm. Joe Hoffman, our assistant club leader, has agreed to donate his time and commitment to lead our club into the future. New members are always welcome. For more information or questions, please contact Joan at [email protected].

AEROSPACE CLUB We want to thank our guest speakers who came to our May meeting, pilots Gordon Davis and Mark Baty. They talked about how to fly and also how to maintain and build your own personal aircraft. These gentlemen and several other pilots will be offering free 30-minute sightseeing airplane rides as part of the EAA's Young Eagles program on Saturday, June 9. If anyone is interested, please contact us at [email protected] for details on how to sign up or for any questions you may have. Our next meeting will be held outdoors at the Nature Center on Camp Ernst Road on Thursday, June 7. We will be flying drones and building rockets from 6:30-7:30 pm and launching rockets from 7:30-8:30 pm. New this year, we will be teaching everyone how to track the altitude of launched rockets. You do not have to bring your own drone or rockets to participate, nor do you need any prior experience. New members are welcome year round. If the weather looks questionable on the June 7 or 9, please email us to see if any outdoor activities will be cancelled.

BREYER HORSE CLUB Hello all! Last month, we made halters for our model horses. This month we will be finishing our halters and possibly customizing some models. We will meet on June 6. We hope to see you there! New members are always welcome! Please contact Krista Bowman at 859-384-0603 if you have any questions.

WIGGLES AND WAGS DOG CLUB At our last meeting, we had Roger from the Greyhound Rescue come and bring some of his

available dogs for adoption. The kids also made toys and bandanas to sell at our booth at Pet Fest on June 24. Our next meeting is June 26 from 7:00-8:00 pm at the Extension

Office. We hope you can join us! For questions or more information about our club, please contact Robin Huddleston at 859-512-8505 or at [email protected].

EXTREME ENTOMOLOGY Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 5 at 6:30 pm. We will be investigating the stages of a

bug’s life at the Environmental and Nature Center (9101 Camp Ernst Road, Union). If there is bad weather that day, please contact club leader Fran Martin at 859-468-4432 to see if we will

still be meeting at the Nature Center. If we have to cancel at the Nature Center, we’ll meet at the Ex-tension Office in the for a bug game night instead. Our last meeting will be on July 17, and we will start back up again in October. Contact [email protected] for additional information.

GUINEA PIG CLUB At our last meeting, we made guinea pig t-shirts and planted grass in containers for our guinea pigs. Camberlie L. was elected as our new secretary. Last month we also visited Elmcroft Assisted Living

with our guinea pigs. The residents really enjoyed our furry friends! Our next meeting is on June 5 from 6:00-7:00 pm at the Extension Office. We will be learning about guinea pig health and care.

We will also make treats for our guinea pigs. New members are always welcome! For questions or more information, please contact Ben or Christie at [email protected].

The first day of summer is between June 20 and June 22 every year. The first day of summer is called the summer solstice, and the day varies due to the Earth’s rotation not exactly reflecting our calendar year.

Watermelon is one of summer’s best summer treats. Did you know that watermelons are not a fruit, but a vegetable instead? They belong to the cucumber family of vegetables.

The Eiffel tower actually grows in the heat of the summer. The iron expands and grows about 6 inches every summer.

Television shows used to only be reruns during the summer months. The idea was that everyone was outside enjoying the weather.

Mosquitos are most prevalent during summer months, and have been on earth for more than 30 million years.

The term “dog days of summer” refers to the dates from July 3 to August 11. They are named after Sirius the Dog Star, which is located in the constellation of Canis Major.

Ice pops were invented in 1905 by an 11 year old boy.

Who is eligible to enter 4-H projects in the Boone County Fair? You must be an enrolled Boone County

4-H member as of June 1 of the current year to enter projects in the Boone County Fair. Watch the 4-H newsletter to see when 4-H fair passes will be available. You will need these passes to enter the fairgrounds free of charge and to

register your fair entries.

What 4-H projects may I enter in the fair? Eligible projects are ones made after the fair last year. The Boone County Fair catalog explains what categories and units you may enter. Check the overall 4-H rules as well as the rules for each specific division. If you need clarification, call 586-6101 to speak to a 4-H representative.

How do I enter my 4-H project in the Boone County Fair? Entries will be taken in the Lutes Floral Hall at the fairgrounds on Monday, August 6, from 11:00 am-4:00 pm (crops, fruits & vegetables, & honey are entered 2:00-7:00 pm—see fair catalog). No projects will be accepted after 4:00 pm.

How are my 4-H projects judged? In 4-H, we use the Danish System of judging. In this system, each exhibitor is recognized for his or her efforts and accomplishments. Each exhibit is considered in comparison with the ideal and is evaluated and awarded a ribbon as follows: Blue means excellent, Red means good, and White means

fair. Thus, each entry is accorded a rating based on how it compares to the ideal or standard, not in competition or comparison with other entries. After all individual ribbons are awarded, the individual

Comparison System is used to consider each blue ribbon entry in comparison with other blue ribbon entries. From that group, first, second, and third place winners are determined. Entries qualifying for State Fair will have a sticker displayed on their ribbon. Please note that State Fair rules determine what each county is allowed to bring as entries. You may contact the Extension Office at 586-6101 for more details. Please be aware that some categories are county level only and do not advance to the State Fair.

Page 13: 4-H Enrollment Deadline: Announcements June 1, 2018Page 4 4-H BREEDING LIVESTOCK PROJECTS Please don’t forget that papers for the 4-H livestock breeding projects are due to the Extension

What happens with the 4-H projects after they are judged? Once items are judged, they will be arranged in a display. All entries will remain on display in Cloverville during the fair week.

When do I get my 4-H projects back? All items, except those selected to go to the State Fair, must be picked up in Cloverville located in the Lutes Floral Hall on Sunday, August 12, from 2:00-4:00 pm. If you cannot pick up your project on that day, ask a friend or relative to do so for you. Projects not picked will be taken to the Extension Office and held until September 28; they will be discarded after that date.

My 4-H project is going to the State Fair...what do I need to do? Nothing really, unless you have a food item. You should prepare a duplicate food item and bring it to Cloverville at the fairgrounds on Sunday, August 12 by 3:00 pm. Those items and all the other State Fair bound entries will be boxed up by 4-H staff and taken to Louisville. Your entry may be required to have additional paperwork. If you are unsure, please check with Paul Adkins to make sure 4-H has everything

Your entry may be required to have additional paperwork. If you are unsure, please check with Paul Adkins to make sure 4-H has everything necessary for your project. Please be aware that projects can be damaged or stolen during the state fair.

When will I get my State Fair items back? State Fair projects should be available for pick up at the Extension Office on Thursday, August 30. Office hours are from 8:00 am-5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Items will be held until September 28. After that date, they will be discarded.

How do I collect my prize premiums? Prizes receiving first, second, or third place are

awarded money. If you have prize money coming, you may collect your check from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday, August 13, at the

Lents Building/Fair office, the small green building straight back from the front gates. After Sunday, checks may be collected at the Extension Office.
