AN OPEN LETTER
OCTOBER 2016
Dear Parents / Guardians,
1. Warm greetings from Queenstown Primary School! Time flies! We are already into the second
last month of the academic year! October is a busy month with the focus on year end examinations. While
our teachers and students are working hard together for the examinations, we seek your continual support
to work closely with our teachers to provide the close monitoring and guidance for your child as he/she sits
for the examinations.
Important Announcements… Children’s Day
2. Friday, 7 October 2016, is Children’s Day and a school holiday for all primary schools. We will
celebrate Children’s Day on Thursday, 6 October. Students will report to school as usual and be dismissed
at 1.15 pm.
PSLE Marking Exercise
3. This year’s 4-day nation-wide PSLE Marking Exercise falls on week 6 of this term, from 17 to
20 October. As all teachers will be involved in the exercise, there will be no school for all students. Your
child will report to school as usual on 21 October, Friday.
Deepavali Holiday
4. Monday, 31st October, will be a school holiday in lieu of Deepavali which falls on Saturday,
29 October. All Hindu colleagues and students will be dismissed earlier at 10.15 am on the eve of Deepavali
on Friday, 28 October. For the safety of all Hindu students who will be dismissed at 10.15 am,
parents/guardians are requested to make the necessary transport arrangements to fetch your child/ward from
school. We wish all Hindu colleagues, students and parents, Happy Deepavali!
SA 2 for P2 to P5 Students
5. The secret to doing well in assessments lies in the planning. We have communicated the SA 2
assessment dates in our last Open Letter to enable you to work with your child to create a clear revision
plan and method of studying that will make him/her feel in control of his/her work. While it is important
that your child puts in the effort to prepare for the assessments, it is also essential to be mindful of his/her
well-being, ensuring he/she gets sufficient rest, exercise and leisure activities in the days before the
assessments. If you notice that your child is showing signs of stress, feel free to contact us. Our in-house
school counsellors, Mdm Alice Ng and Mrs Chua Oi Lin, will be available to help your child.
6. Should your child be unwell on the day of an assessment, it is in his/her best interest not to be in
school. He/She needs to be resting and recovering. If your child were to sit for the assessment, he/she would
not be able to focus and do well for it. The marks he/she scores may then not be a true reflection of his/her
ability.

7. Students who are absent from an assessment will be given the assessment paper as practise and
the marks will not be included in the overall mark computation. Only the following are considered as valid
reasons for absences during assessments:
Medical reasons supported by a medical certificate from a doctor.
Bereavement of family members. A copy of the death certificate has to be given to the form
teacher when the student returns to school to support his/her absence.
All other reasons are to be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to the school’s approval. Please take
note that no mark will be given for any assessment which a student is absent without a valid reason.
Re-application of MOE Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) in 2017
8. If your child is a recipient of the MOE FAS in 2016, he/she would have received the application
form for 2017. The form and all supporting documents attached have to be returned to the General Office
by Monday, 10 October. Forms that are already in have been processed and you would be informed of the
status of your application by mid-November. Application received after the cut-off date will result in delay
in processing.
9. If your child has never been a recipient and you would like to find out more about this scheme,
please feel free to contact Mdm Noraisah Ibrahim, our officer in-charge, or any of our office staff for
assistance. You may reach them at 64741044.
Parents’ Smartphone Messaging System
10. In our August Open Letter, we communicated that we would be tapping on our existing holistic
reporting system, C2HAMPS (Character, Cognitive and Holistic), for school notification and attendance,
in place of the SNAAPP App. However, after various trials of the C2HAMPS Messaging System, we have
decided that the technical issues are not favourable at the moment for us to come on board the system. We
are now exploring alternative solution and will notify you once the solution is ready.
11. We thank you for your patience and understanding.
Revision of School Bus Fare
12. Our bus vendor, Sky Island Transport & Trading, has made some adjustments to the bus
fares, making them more comparable to those charged by other bus vendors for the same distances in
the same area. The company calculates its fares according to the student’s pickup and drop off point.
Please note that an additional cost of $7 per month will be charged if there is a variation in the pickup
and drop off location under the same area.
13. Parents can visit the Information Notice Board for School Bus Services (IBSB) website,
an internet portal set up by the Education Ministry (MOE) at
https://schadmsvc.moe.gov.sg/moeibsb/IbsbSchoolBusServices.aspx to compare the fares. The new fare
charges are as shown in the table below:
Bus Fares for Daily School Bus Services by Distance
Distance Up to 11 Seaters >20-23 Seaters >40-45 Seaters
1 Way 2 Way 1 Way 2 Way 1 Way 2 Way
Up to 2km $70.00 $80.00 $70.00 $80.00 $70.00 $80.00

>4-6km $120.00 $160.00 $120.00 $160.00 $120.00 $160.00
>6 km $220.00 $270.00 $220.00 $270.00 $220.00 $270.00
*Note: The bus fare quoted is the highest expected charge for the given distance category. The bus fare will be charged
on a 9-month payment scheme.

14. For details of other variations in the pickup and drop off arrangement, please send the bus
company in-charge, Mr Richard Fong, a message at 83639498 or email him at [email protected].
He will follow up with you from there.
Thanksgiving… Teachers’ Day 2016
15. A BIG THANK YOU to all who contributed to making our Teachers’ Day celebration a
memorable one at QtPS. Judging from the happy smiles from all teaching and non-teaching staff, we were
all similarly touched by the outpouring of love and appreciation shown by parents and students. Your
thoughtful and lovely gestures are much appreciated by us. Special thanks also, to the group of parents from
our QtPSG who, together with Ms Siti Nur Sabrina, our SPE, staff of Care Hut, our student care centre, and
our Heads of Department, Ms Geralin Tan and Mrs Diana Ho, organised the entertaining activities for the
whole staff. You made us feel like celebrities!

Upcoming events…
Children’s Day cum Sports Carnival
17. The school will be having its Sports Carnival on Thursday, 6 October, together with the Children’s
Day Celebration. The day looks set to be one filled with fun and excitement for everyone. Our theme for
this year is “Dare to Dream” and we hope that the experiences gained on the day will inspire our students
to cultivate a mindset similar to those of our gold medal Olympian/Paralympian, Joseph Schooling and Yip
Pin Xiu.
18. All students will participate in a variety of games held at various locations in the school. The
carnival will provide a chance for them to showcase their skills and talents, and also apply the knowledge
that they have learnt during PE lessons. Students will be representing their colour houses, and are
encouraged to persevere and do their best in the various games. They will also be reminded to demonstrate
the school and Olympic values as they engage in friendly competitions. It will certainly be very heartening
to capture our students displaying gestures of sportsmanship and fair play, as these values will go a long
way in their lives.
19. After the carnival, the students will be treated to a concert with performances by their teachers
and Creative Tree in which they will understand that hard work and perseverance are key to making their
dreams come true.
P6 Neighbourhood Newspapers Collection Recycling Project
20. On the morning of Saturday, 22 October, our P6 students, together with their form and co-form
teachers, will be carrying out a Newspapers Collection Recycling Project at 11 blocks of flats at Strathmore
Avenue (Blocks 80 to 83, 48 to 52, 55 and 56). This project is to provide a learning experience and the
opportunity to cultivate in our students an interest in environment conservation through involvement in a
recycling project and to practice the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We will be collaborating with about
80 students and 3 teachers from Queensway Secondary School as well as 5 Queenstown Residential
Committee volunteers. From this project, we hope that our students will be able to apply the values of care,
protect and improve the environment through awareness and actions.
21. Should you be residing in one of these blocks, please keep aside your old newspapers for our
students. Thank you, in advance, for the support.
Queenstown Parent Support Group (QtPSG) Appreciation Breakfast
22. We would be celebrating the support and contributions of all QtPSG members through a simple
QtPSG Appreciation Breakfast. The details are
Date : Wednesday, 2 November 2016
Time : 7.30 am – 9.00 am
Venue : Band Room, Level 3
23. As a school, we have always been proud of the strong home-school partnership that we have
forged with our parents through our QtPSG over the years. Our QtPSG has strengthened the ties between
parents and the school to enable us to work together to improve the work-play environment for our students
while building bonds with like-minded parents as they share their own time and talents. All QtPSG
members, please join us at the Appreciation Breakfast. Please register your attendance with your respective
sub-group leaders. Alternatively, email [email protected] to register. Thank you!

P1 Orientation
24. The P1 Orientation will be held on 18 November, Friday, from 9 am to 12 noon.
Annual Speech & Prize-giving Day cum P6 Graduation
25. The Annual Speech & Prize-giving Day cum P6 Graduation will be held on the last day of school,
18 November, Friday. The event will be conducted in our school hall from 4 pm to 6 pm. In order for all
participants and guests to witness the celebrations in comfort, we will arrange chairs for all. However, this
will limit the number of participants and guests that we can accommodate. As such, this event will only be
opened to our P5 and P6 students, prize recipients, performers and their parents. The rest of the P1 to P4
students do not need to come to school on this day. In order not to disappoint students who are not invited
for the event, Part 1 of the Annual Speech & Prize-giving Day will be held on 17 November, Thursday,
during school hours.
Preparing Your Child for Secondary School: Selection & Transition
26. The move from primary to secondary school can either be a time of excitement and new
experiences or a challenge/concern to some students. Helping your child prepare for secondary school, from
the selection of schools to easing him/her into the routine of secondary school life will make him/her feel
supported and reduce the risk of disengagement from school in the future.
27. We have planned a talk on this topic for all interested P5 and P6 parents. The school Principal,
Mrs Grace Chua, will guide you through the selection and transition processes. Details of the talk
Date : Friday, 11 November 2016
Time : 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm
Venue : Band Room, Level 3
28. Please email [email protected] to register your interest.
29. Please refer to Annex A for the calendar of events in the month of October. You can also access
it at our website, http://www.queenstownpri.moe.edu.sg/others/coe-for-parents.
Concluding Remarks…
If I Had My Child to Raise Over Again By Diana Loomans
If I had my child to raise over again,
I’d finger paint more, and point the finger less.
I’d do less correcting, and more connecting.
I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less, and know to care more.
I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.
I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I’d run through more fields, and gaze at more stars.
I’d do more hugging, and less tugging.
I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.
I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I’d teach less about the love of power,
And more about the power of love.
It matters not whether my child is big or small,
From this day forth, I’ll cherish it all.
6
30. A renowned, lovely poem with great wisdom that expresses the love and heartfelt feelings of
every parent so succinctly. Are you feeling a twinge of regret that perhaps you could have done this or that,
or more of what mattered to the child? If only we could freeze the moments of time we have with our
children and cherish them for who they are! Take heart, that though we cannot stop the time, we can slow
down our days and learn how to treasure the precious moments we have together.
31. We thought it apt to share this poem with you as we mark Children’s Day this month. After all,
Children’s Day is celebrated each year to recognise the uniqueness of each child and the potential he/she
possesses. In the month of October, let us take time to really notice the child, focus on who he/she is rather
than what he/she does. Remember, we are growing a person, not fixing a problem.
32. Thank you and have a wonderful month ahead!
Warmest Regards,
Mrs Grace Chua Mrs Helen Tan Mdm Poon Pei Ping
