3 rd International Workshop and Fieldtrip of IGCP 655 Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event: Impact on marine organisms and ecosystems September 2 nd – 5 th , 2019, Erlangen (Germany) PRESENTATION The IGCP project 655 -Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event: Impact on marine fauna and ecosystems (International Geoscience Program supported by the IUGS and UNESCO) and the Friedrich-Alexander Universität are pleased to announce the 3 rd International Workshop on the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (3 rd IW-TOAE). The main topic will be “Impact on marine organisms and ecosystems”. This workshop is open to all other researchers focused on the study of the palaeobiological and palaeoenvironmental perturbations associated with the Pliensbachian–Toarcian boundary and the T-OAE. This workshop is intended to promote an active participation of early career researchers and students. For that reason, a pre-conference training course is offered focusing on quantitative analysis of biological patterns. As a university city, Erlangen offers an academic and welcoming atmosphere right in the heart of the most iconic Jurassic outcrops, which will be visited during the two-day post-conference fieldtrip. SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM The meeting will be hosted by the Geozentrum Nordbayern. The first day will be dedicated to a training course which will be focused on 3D-imaging techniques and quantitative tools for the analysis of the biotic record during biological crises and extinction. After the course, a one-day scientific session will take place, followed by a two-day field excursion. Day 1 (2 nd of September): Training course The training course will take place in the Paleontology Institute (Loewenichstrasse 28, Erlangen). It will be focused on the macroecological impacts of climate-related stresses. The first part will be split into two parallel sessions, according to the preferences of the participants: a) 3D imaging techniques, from CT-scanning acquisition to Drishti 3D-imaging software, and biometric analysis taught by Dr. Kenneth De Baets and Patrícia Rita b) Introduction to biomolecules and molecular fossils taught by Dr. Wolfgang Ruebsam from the Department of Organic and Isotope Geochemistry of the Kiel University The second part will consist of an R short course on size/extinction/ diversity patterns through time thought by Prof. Dr. Manuel Steinbauer, an expert in quantitative analysis applied to ecology and evolutionary processes.

3rd International Workshop and Fieldtrip of IGCP 655 Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event: Impact on marine organisms and ecosystems

September 2nd – 5th, 2019, Erlangen (Germany)

PRESENTATION The IGCP project 655 -Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event: Impact on marine fauna and ecosystems (International Geoscience Program supported by the IUGS and UNESCO) and the Friedrich-Alexander Universität are pleased to announce the 3rd International Workshop on the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (3rd IW-TOAE).

• Day 1 (2nd of September): Training course

The training course will take place in the Paleontology Institute (Loewenichstrasse 28, Erlangen). It will be focused on the macroecological impacts of climate-related stresses.

The first part will be split into two parallel sessions, according to the preferences of the participants:

a) 3D imaging techniques, from CT-scanning acquisition to Drishti 3D-imaging software, and biometric analysis taught by Dr. Kenneth De Baets and Patrícia Rita

b) Introduction to biomolecules and molecular fossils taught by Dr. Wolfgang Ruebsam from the Department of Organic and Isotope Geochemistry of the Kiel University

The second part will consist of an R short course on size/extinction/ diversity patterns through time thought by Prof. Dr. Manuel Steinbauer, an expert in quantitative analysis applied to ecology and evolutionary processes.

The participants must bring their own laptop. The training course is limited to 25 participants.

• Day 2 (3rd of September): Scientific session and conference dinner

The scientific session will take place in the Geozentrum Nordbayern (Schlossgarten 5, Erlangen) in the lecture theatre. A keynote focusing on the biological impact of the Pliensbachian-Toarcian crisis will close the scientific session of the conference.

The participants should indicate in the registration platform whether they participate in the conference dinner or not and provide information in case of any diet restrictions (vegan, vegetarian, celiac, etc.). The conference dinner will take place in a Greek restaurant with a buffet style.

• Days 3 and 4 (4th and 5th of September): Field trip

The two-day field trip will be focused on three Lower Jurassic outcrops: Buttenheim, Teufelsgraben and Dotternhausen. These three localities offer excellent conditions for a proper analysis of the sedimentary facies, with emphasis on the excellent fossil preservation. Samples can be collected. Both the Pliensbachian-Toarcian transition and the T-OAE are well exposed.

The fieldtrip is limited to 25 participants.
