1. As you have already learned, the verb ser is used to express origin, a characteristic, or an inherent quality. The verb estar is used to express a permanent or temporary location, temporary state, or a condition. The speaker often chooses the verb ser or estar depending upon the meaning he or she wishes to convey. Observe and analyze the following.

El tiempo en la Patagonia es muy borrascoso.

Hoy el tiempo aquí está muy borrascoso.

The first sentence uses ser because the meaning conveyed is that the weather is characteristically stormy and nasty in Patagonia. In the second sentence it’s not a characteristic of the weather in that locale. It’s an isolated, temporary condition.

Note that the verb estar with vivo means to be alive. The verb estar is also used with muerto to mean to be dead, even though death is permanent.

El concierto tendrá lugar mañana.

4. The verb ser is used whenever the verb to be has the meaning of to take place.

El concierto será mañana.

Tendrá lugar en el teatro. Será en el teatro.
