Difference between Action and Linking.

One shows action and the other does not.

An action verb show Action, and a linking verb does not.

Identifying Linking verbs

A linking verb does not show action instead they connect the subject to additional information about the subject.

Eg. Mary is a shopaholic. (‘Is’ isn’t something marry can do. ‘Is’ connects the subject to additional information about Mary.)

Identifying Action Verbs

When Identifying an action verb you ask:

What's happening? or What's being done?

Eg. Sally runs fast. (What’s happening? Sally runs. So ‘runs’ will be your action verb.)

Auxiliary Verbs

An auxiliary verb is a verb which makes a present participle a verb.

E.g.. The girls are running in the race.

Modal VerbsA modal is a type of an auxiliary verb. A modal can show mood or tense. You can start the sentence as a question. You can turn a sentence around. (split the verb)

Eg. • He can run. Is the original sentence.• ‘Can he run?’ Is the same sentence, but now

is asked as a question

Note: A modal never has a ‘s’.
