ATLANTA’S ROLE IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

“In the early 1960s, Atlanta became the cultural catalyst for the civil rights movement. While civil rights efforts predate the city’s involvement, the activists quickly found their spiritual center within the Sweet Auburn district making it home to much of the civil rights history. Today, Atlanta is the only city in the nation where you can view two Nobel Peace Prizes – one located in the King Center and the other in the Carter Center.

In celebration of the city’s civil rights legacy, you’ll find historic events, notable civil rights activists, attractions and historic sites, heritage tours and present day festivals. Explore the site and city for an in-depth look at the effects of rarely-mentioned revolutionaries who were catalysts in the civil rights movement.

The city of Atlanta is the embodiment of Southern hospitality, sophistication and progress. It belies a truly progressive character that has defined a legacy, continues to exert leadership and builds on the civil rights movement. Open minds and open arms invite you to explore our city’s distinguished past!”

GETTING AROUND ATLANTA

AIRPORT SHUTTLES

There are a number of hotels, motels and inns surrounding Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). Many provide free shuttle service to and from the Airport. Our recommended hotel - The Hilton Garden Inn Atlanta Downtown DOES NOT provide a free shuttle service.

Hotel shuttle service is available on the Purple Aisle outside in the Ground Transportation Center, located at the west end of the domestic terminals building (west curb). The west curb is located outside between the Domestic North and South Terminals.

Courtesy phones are available, if you would like the arrival or departure times for your shuttle. Please check with your hotel in advance and inquire if it provides this service. You will notice the Airport’s courtesy phone boards located inside the Airport near the baggage claim areas for both the Domestic North and South Terminals. Courtesy phones can also be found outside in the Ground Transportation Center.

***

Shared-ride shuttle services are available at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) during flight operating hours. These shuttles provide transportation service to hotels, convention centers, businesses and residences.

Most shared-ride shuttles pick up on the Green Bus Aisle , which is located outside in the Ground Transportation Center between the Domestic North and South Terminals. Contact the company directly to make reservations or for inquiries.
