A Note from the Office

Fee letters have gone home to all families. If you receive a letter that is in-

correct please contact the school. We are proud only to charge fees in

courses that have a consumable component. As the Government rolls out

its new education payments we need to ensure all student details are cor-

rect. In the coming weeks we will be sending home forms for you to update

student details. Please do not miss out on payments due to incorrect details

at school.

If you have not received information about your child’s 2013 enrolment in

year 7 please contact the school now. If you have not returned a 2013

enrolment form for your child please return it immediately.

Thankyou– Administration Staff

From the Principal

At the close of term we celebrated students’ achievements both academically

and behaviourally. Each year more students gain well deserved awards and acco-

lades. The term two theme of the formal assemblies was RESPECT. Students

were presented with a diverse input of ideas and achievable actions to demon-

strate respect.

My concern is that students are not respecting themselves and the learning re-

quired to be successful throughout life. No student is bright enough to come late

to class, truant lessons or absent themselves from school, thus missing work and

then be able to compete successfully in state wide exams.

Please discuss this with your son and daughter as truancy is not acceptable and

students need to consider their aspirations and dreams and plan for their future.

YEAR 7 BULLYING PROGRAM:

The final weeks of term two saw year 7 participate in a valuable Bullying Program. The program had been broken up into a number of units which will be completed by classes each term. The emphasis for term 2 has been What is Bullying and What causes Bullying. The program focuses on encouraging positive peer group pressure and support, as well as developing effective communication. The aim of the program is to reduce the tendency to be a bully as well as reducing the tendency to be bullied. This is achieved by: Increasing knowledge and awareness of bullying, Enhancing interpersonal skills and self-esteem of students to deal with bullying, Developing strategies which empower students, Mobilising students into more effective social networks and Promoting resilience. When asked whether they found the program worthwhile most students agreed the information was relevant and insightful. Students left session one with a clear understanding of what behaviour is classified as bullying as well as being able to identify reasons why someone may be a bully. Overall this has been a successful start to an important program planed for year 7 this year.

SCIENCE

Macquarie University again puts on a great show

On Friday 1st of June 2012, 14 of

our Year 9 & 10 students attended

a Gifted and Talented Science

Day presented by Macquarie Uni-

versity. All major science catego-

ries were covered on the day, in-

cluding Earth & Environment,

Biology & Chemistry with each

section having some hands on

fun.

Students started their day listen-

ing to a very informative talk on

the courses available in Senior

Campus.

During the Biology section stu-

dents learned to make tools used

by the Aboriginal people. They

were very excited to make a rope,

sharpen a stone and finally make

an axe.

After the morning tea was the

Chemistry session where stu-

dents performed some experi-

ments by themselves. They made

―Elephant Toothpaste‖ by mixing

together chemicals following a

step by step procedure. They

made slime by using PVA and

small amount of glitter and ended

by making nylon!

Students also enjoyed the activity

called ―Are you a Smelling Geni-

us?‖ In this activity, students had

to identify the actual chemicals

that causes the smell in common

household materials. Many Sci-

ence magic tricks were demon-

strated.

The highlight of the day was a

video session on fish where stu-

dents learnt about their memory,

behaviour and sleep .

Everyone had a great day and it

sparked a deeper understanding

and interest in science. amongst

our students who continue to ben-

efit from the Macquarie Universi-

ty-Science Faculty CCMDC part-

nership.

Thanks go to Dave Harrington

and his team from Macquarie

University and Young Scientists

of Australia and also to Ms.Kaur

for organizing and accompanying

the students on the day.

What do you get when get when you mix History and Science?

Mummification. As part of the study on ancient Egyptian civilisation, students learn about the art of

mummification and the role it played in the lives of Egyptian people. Mr Marquez had his class mummify

some apples so they could see how the process works.

Note: We didn‘t really mummify a student … just had some fun wrapping him up like one!

Mr Parker‘s class were asked to do a

project on Egypt, and Shade made this

amazing replica of the inside of a

pyramid, complete with sarcophagus.

Commerce classes have been enjoying some changes in how they learn. Working from multiple intelli-

gence grids has allowed students to choose from a variety of tasks, the ones they feel best suits their style of

learning. This encouraged students to be self-motivated and independent learners.

During the term, Year 10 students were able to venture out into the Mount Druitt CBD. This enabled them

to see local businesses and employment opportunities, and also become informed about the many services

provided by Centrelink.

The Year 10 elective Japanese class has recently completed a unit of

work on "Travelling to Japan". Fortunately, Mount Druitt Campus

Library has a fantastic box of Japanese clothing, accessories and

ornaments which really helped students get into character for their

Japanese role-plays.

Page 8: 29.06.12 Mt Druitt Matters Mt

In HSIE subjects we like to engage students by having them participate in some fun, hands-on learn-

ing. So far this semester, students have had the opportunity to: investigate the ancient Egyptian skill

of mummification, by mummifying some apples; make Aboriginal dot paintings; dress in a tradition-

al Japanese kimono; re-create models of the pyramids; make clothes from newspaper like those worn

by the ancient Greeks; make clay tablets and medieval shields; and Commerce students have gone on

excursions to businesses and Centrelink.

Year 10: Kelly Davies, Princess Quimque, Lily Xin, Samantha Sciberras, Neema Rajak Year 9: Semisi Lotuleilei, Kristy Lee Herring, Simmone Vehikite, Gavin Foreman, James Ragen Year 8: Isileli Lotuleilei, Daniel Deasey, Katielee Hemmings, Morgan Shields, Khin Myint Year 7: Samantha Mvana, John Malzaro, William Filimoehala, Christina Fatialofa, Fifita

As part of the Year 8 course on

Aboriginal history, students are intro-

duced to many forms of art and storytell-

ing, both ancient and modern. Here,

students are attempting the intricate art

form of dot painting. Some of their works

are also pictured.

Students have also use the internet to

research how contact with Europeans has

affected the Australian indigenous

peoples. Year 7 Geography students have been learning about the

different features of natural and human environments.

They cut pictures from magazines and created posters to

demonstrate their understanding of the two concepts.

Term 3 brings some new and interesting topics to study. Year 7 will

start off by investigating what life is like in the Polar regions, then

Ancient China; Year 8 will be looking Human rights and Indigenous

communities; Year 9 will continue learning about the impact of Nat-

ural Disasters on Australia; and YEAR 10 commence with Australia

in its Regional and Global contexts.

Try A Trade During week 10, a group of 22 Year 10 students visited Kevin Betts Stadium for Try a Trade. Students engaged in a range of hands on activities that focused on employment skills and increasing students’ expo-sure to trades being offered at TAFE. Congratulations to all students who attended. They participated in a way that enabled them to get the most from the

experience and bring pride to our school.

LEAPS

Our previous LEAPS excursion was to Sydney Observatory.

Our tour was guided by an astronomy educator and included an awesome 3-D space theatre experience, a

look at the night sky in our bean bag planetarium and viewing of the Sun using a special (safe) solar tele-

scope.

After lunch, all the students and their mentors participated in ‗theatre sports‘. With a number of students‘

acting skills, I think we should keep our eyes out for them on the big screen. Waha and Des made a particu-

larly lovely couple as David Beckham and Posh Spice and many of the students left mentors (and teachers)

in fits of laughter.

Our last excursion for Term 2 was to IMAX at Darling Harbour.

Year 10 Work Experience

This term our Year 10 students completed a week of work experience. Students chose a variety of placements, such as vet clinics, hairdressers, local councils, Real Estate Agents, Boeing, Primary schools, child care centres, mechanics, plumbers, health care centres, pho-tographers, restaurants, a range of retail outlets and more. Reports from supervisors were overwhelmingly positive and many students were offered further employment. One student was described as being better than the apprentice! Congratulations to all who participated! Now is a good time for year 9 students to start thinking about what they would like to do next year for work experience. If anyone has any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. Miss Hooke

TAS Faculty Update.

In term 2 the TAS Faculty welcomed Ms Rabaud who she has been involved in teaching students in the areas of Technology Mandatory (Metal work, Timber) and Year 9 Computing Studies. In Technology Mandatory Metal stu-dents have designed and created individual ‘dog tag’ pendants. In Technology Mandatory Timber students have designed and produced a storage box decorated using a range of techniques such as ‘wood burning’. In Stage 5 Wood Work Mr Peachey improved hand eye co-ordination, engaging students in measuring, marking out and cutting timber design projects. Students have completed their project, a foot stool and are now working on an upholstered bench. Year 10 are making a toolbox. In the Support Unit Years 9 & 10 students have completed a timber spice rack (see photos below ). In term 3 the students will again work with timber and have begun measuring and marking up a CD holder. Stay tuned for future of these projects! They have studied the importance of food and nutrition with lessons on personal and food hy-giene along with how to plan, prepare and present a range of healthy and nutritious meals. They have been amazed that nutritious food can actually taste good!!! Students in Year 9 and 10 Food Technology continue to ‘cook up a storm’ in the kitchen and their culinary skills con-tinue to develop. Year 9 have learnt about ‘Food Trends’ and with so many cooking shows currently on TV it’s not hard to identify current food trends. Year 10 has looked at the contribution of food service and catering on the economy. A number of students are already employed in this field. The catering team has been working extremely hard. The role of the catering team is to assist Mrs Rani in prepar-ing food for events at school. These may be for 10 people or the whole staff. The student prepare, present and serve food, which assists in developing their culinary skills as well as getting plenty of volunteer hours.

The Caring for Children classes has worked hard with Year 9 completing their babies mobiles– these look really fantastic. Year 10 has worked hard putting together a babysitting portfolio. Year 10 has also been sporting vir-tual babies, an exhausting experience.

Stage 5 Food Technology students Shaheed

and Matthew do it ‗Master Chef ‗ style!

Russell from 9/10 Support Unit

with his timber spice rack.

Stage 4 students engage in Wood Work

workshop.

The TAS Faculty would like to thank parents for paying their students elective fees.

Art Box Students studying Visual Arts from Year 7 through to 10 have been having lots of fun creating sculptures from paper or clay.

Year 8 have been busy using papier mache to create highly imaginative animals inspired by Mexican Folk Art. Year 9 Photog-

raphy/Ceramics students learnt about Pop Art before sculpting funky clay cupcakes. Year 10 Art students are busy making Na-

tive American inspired clay totem poles and Year 10 Photography/Ceramics are challenging their ceramic skills by creating nar-

rative teapots.

All these projects take a lot of time and the following photographs show examples of these works in progress. Stay tuned for

photographs of the finished work next term. Keep up the great work everyone!

Refugee Week theme: Restoring Hope The theme for Refugee week was ‘Restoring Hope’. It reminds us that, while a refugee’s jour-ney begins with danger, it also begins with hope. Refugees flee their homelands not only because they fear persecution, but also because they have hope: they hope to find freedom from persecution, and safety and security for themselves and their families; they hope to be given a chance to start a new life and recover from past trauma. The theme also tells us that countries like Australia that offer protection to refugees give them a chance to rebuild their lives. By doing this they can restore hope for a future free from fear, persecution and violence. Finally, the theme highlights the situation of refugees whose hopes have not been fulfilled – those who remain in serious situations, facing discrimination, violence and uncertainty, with little hope for a solution in the future. The theme asks us to think about how we can help refu-gees and bring hope for a brighter future.

News » African Pride at Chifley College

Refugee Day celebrations held at Rooty Hill RSL Thursday 21st June, Week 9 have

recognised the contributions that refugees from around the world have made to our

community. Chifley College girls from Years 7 to 9 African Pride group performed

promoting the theme Restoring Hope. Once again our students demonstrated their fine

talents and commitment to their community. Well done Bongor, Precious, Machoze,

Alamako, Sundas, Marieka, Fatuma and Samantha. Mrs Van-Stolk

My highlights yesterday were the performances,

but mostly the speeches because they showed me

how lucky my family and I are to be considered

refugees and to not have gone through so much

pain and suffering to even be considered a refu-

gee. We have been provided everything we need-

ed and our freedom and choice to be an Australi-

an citizen, when so many people try and pray for

the chance to be considered a refugee but are nev-

er given the chance. Yesterday made me think

how important hope is and how far it has taken

different people, so many families that were not

as fortunate as us.

Raising the curtain for a spectacular showcase

During Term 3, PlayWriting Australia, the national peak body for the playwriting industry, will be run-

ning a series of playwriting skills courses for students in Year 10. Under the guidance of professional

theatre practitioners, this is a chance for participants to explore their individual voice and style, writing

about what is important to them, turning raw emotion into working plays.

Based on a mixture of fun, interactive games and writing exercises, this is an opportunity for students to

work with the industry’s best and see their stories live and breathe. Topics covered in the full workshops

include a basic structure for telling any story, character, dialogue, and action, and can provide a great

starting point for any students planning to write their own stories in Drama or English.

The students‘ final polished pieces will be performed live on stage as the headliner for the Literacy and

Numeracy Week Showcase. Special guests at this event include the Regional Director David Phipps,

talented writers from the local primary school, as well as a local journalist and photographer.

News » Indigenous Reading Project at Chifley

The national Indigenous Reading Project (IRP) aims to bring young Indigenous people and technology to-gether to improve their reading through greater access to literature. The IRP funds the loan of Kindles loaded with selected texts to students. The students work closely with their teacher and their reading is assessed at 12 and 24 weeks during the program. If they demonstrate a measured improvement in their reading they are given a Kindle to keep. Chifley College Mt Druitt Campus has been provided the opportunity for all Aboriginal students to take part in the application process for the Kindles. Two successful students, Kara and Jade of year 8 have been members of the Enrichment class since Year 7 and have worked diligently over the past 18 months. The girls have participated in Digedance and Living Deadly programs and are active members of the Aboriginal Leadership Team facilitated by English Teacher Ashlea Kavanagh. Both girls had been quite active readers in primary school but, with the demands of high school, their reading routine had dropped off. Since re-ceiving their Kindles, the girls have been reading anywhere between 30 minutes to 4 hours per night on a daily basis. For more information about the project: www.irp.org.au
