303rd BG (H) Combat Mission No. 10129 January 1944

Target: City area, Frankfurt, Germany (PFF Bombing)Crews Dispatched: 39

Crews Lost: 1 crew, Lt. Fowler, 10 crewmembers

Length of Mission: 7 hours, 5 minutes

Bomb Load: 10 x 500 lb G.P. bombs

Altitude: Both Groups at 25,000 ft

Ammo Fired: 3,100 rounds

Thirty-nine 303rd BG(H) B-17s took off. There were no abortions. All aircraft wereloaded with 500-lb. M-17 cluster incendiary bombs.

The PFF equipment on the lead B-17 of the 41 CBW-A failed. It then made a seriesof "S" turns before reaching the bombing "initial point." These turns were made in an effortto get behind and bomb on the 41 CBW-B formation. The maneuver was unsuccessful andthe 41 CBW-A formation failed to get back into a correct Combat Wing bombing formation. The 41 CBW-A bombing results could not be observed because of the solid cloud cover.

Flak for the 303BG-A Group was moderate and inaccurate, but was accurate for the303BG-B Group. Fighter support was excellent. P-47s carried the formations to the IPwhere they were met by P-38s. Twenty-five to thirty enemy aircraft were observed and the303BG-A Group experienced one attack by five ME-109s. The 303BG-B Group had nofighter attacks.

The No. 4 B-17 in the lead Squadron "A" Group, #42-39786,G.I. Sheets 427BS-R, encountered a rough and frustratingmission. The crew crossed the German coast with a faultyNo. 2 engine and was forced to feather engine No. 4. Justbefore reaching the IP it developed a bad oil leak. Unableto stay with the formation, the bombs were jettisoned andthe aircraft was soon hit by German FW-190s. Hits disabledthe oxygen system, the interphone and many of the flightinstruments. They dove to lower altitudes to reach cloudcover and used the autopilot to maintain flight. Thedamaged Fortress was hit by fighters numerous timesbefore Lt. Fowler was forced to belly-land his Fort in aBelgian field at Solre-St. Gery. All crewmen except Lt.Fowler and Lt. Rawlins were wounded.

Pilot 2Lt. James F. Fowler and T/Sgt. Donald J. Dinwiddie managed to evadecapture until 13 May 1944, when they were betrayed by a French doctor and his wife nearLille, who drove them to a German outpost. 2Lt. Bernard W. Rawlings evaded captureand made his way back to England after crossing the Pyrenees into Spain. 2Lt. Alvin L.Taylor, 2Lt. Joseph C. Thompson, Jr. and S/Sgt. Jack D. Ferguson were badly wounded.

The Belgian and French resistance fighters gave valuable andheroic assistance to the evaders. After the war the people of

Belgium erected a monument in Solre-Saint-Gery, Belgium, tocommemorate the Fowler Crew.

They were taken to a civilian hospitalby Belgians where they were captured andcared for by Germans. T/Sgt. Curtis E.Finley was with Lt. Rawlings until they splitup, after which he was captured not farfrom the Spanish border. S/Sgt. RichardArrington evaded capture and was pickedup by American troops in September 1944.S/Sgt. Loren E. Zimmer bailed out at about150-200 ft. altitude and landed in a bog.He managed to evade capture and waspicked up by American troops inSeptember 1944. Sgt. Miller O. Jacksondied from severe wounds after the crashlanding. He had taken off his flak vest inflight.

The 8th Air Force, led by Pathfinder aircraft, dispatched a record number of aircraftand lost 24 B-17s and 5 B-24s on big aerial battles behind the 303rd BG(H) formations.Capt. Hullar said that the raid wasn't particularly tough, and "FW-190s made one pass atus before we got to the target and then went after the Groups behind us. Flak was comingup in a barrage, but it was meager and wasn't very accurate."

Major Kirk R. Mitchell, "B" Groupleader, finished his 25th missionand described it as uneventful."There wasn't much to it," he said."We really expected a rough one,but didn't get it. We had excellentfighter support by our P-38s and P-47s. They certainly keep theGerman fighters away from ourGroup. There were 25 or 30 enemyfighters around, but they stayedaway. Don't know how we did on thebombing because we droppedthrough the clouds. Should be goodthough, because we dropped in themiddle of the flak barrage."

Sgt. Ira Friedman, ball turret gunner, said that some of the Groups seemed to behaving a tough time of it. "I saw two FWs attack a straggler and they shot it down in amatter of seconds after just one pass," he said. "The gunners in that Fort really nailedthem." Fighter support was hailed by 2Lt. Joseph Massimiliano, co-pilot in 360BSBanshee, who exclaimed, "Four ME-109s came diving in on our Group from the right sideof the formation and some P-47s came in from the left to challenge them. Every one of the

ME-109s was shot down." Sgt. Paul Buckley registered his first kill flying as photographeron the Fortress Iza Vailable, and said, "It was a poor show from the camera angle today. It wasn't a bit rough though, which might cost some good pictures, but certainly didn't costme any mental strain."

A number of crews reported that P-38s dropped their auxiliary "belly" tanks too closeto the Group formation. One Fortress, #42-37893 Bam Bam 358BS-G, flying in the No. 3position of the lead element of the 41 CBW-B formation, piloted by 2Lts. Walter R. Kyseand James B. Taylor were hit on the left wing by a "belly" tank. It left a hole in the wing anddestroyed the left aileron. The pilots, with the help of S/Sgt. Douglas L. Jones, engineer, flew Bam Bam home with limited controls. The crew also complained about the very poormission sandwiches, but were happy that they had received two eggs for breakfast.

The 8th Air Force losses for today were: 29 aircraft, 15 crewmen killed, 32 crewmenwounded and 299 crewmen missing. S/Sgt. Richard Arrington (786) claimed an FW-190destroyed, though official confirmation is unavailable.

MISSION #7

Date: January 29, 1944

Target: Frankfurt, Germany

Altitude: 26,000 feet

Plane: U-050 "Thunderbird"

Position: No. 2, High Squadron, High Group

Th is was our first raid in our newly assigned ship, though we had started

on a mission in this ship a few days before this raid. That mission was

recalled soon after we reached altitude and were out over the North Sea.

This recall proved to be a very good thing for us, however, because the No.

1 engine failed completely on our final approach to our landing. Had we not

been recalled to our base, we would have got about over the target when

the engine failed - and it would have been quite a haul to make it back to

England on three engines.

We got along OK and had no fighter opposition, but the flak was

heavy and accurate - it always was over Frankfurt. We received two direct

hits in the left wing, one of which hit the main wing spar and cut it so badly

that our new plane had to go to the hangar immediately after we landed and

have a new wing put on. Another near m iss from a flak shell shook the

plane very much. It actually felt like one of the engines had been knocked

completely off. The concussion from some of these flak bursts was terrific.

Upon returning to the field, we found the usual lousy Limey weather waiting for us. We had

to let down through the "soup" on instruments. We homed on a splasher-beacon and were able to

get to the field OK. We got so used to making instrument let-downs that it became common practice

in England.

Again we were lucky in not having a man injured, though our plane received a few bad

holes in it. S/Sgt. Wike, tail gunner, was grounded for this mission because of a cold. He was also

suffering from a bad case of nerves from what he had seen on some of these missions. Our bomb

load was 42 one-hundred pound incendiary bombs in five-hundred pound clusters. [Sgt. Wike was

replaced on this mission by John F. Newman]

First Mission for B-17G #42-38050 Thunderbird

This mission was the first for the now famous B-17G #42-38050 Thunderbird. Thunderbird

would go on to fly 112 credited missions. Lt Moncur's crew was the only crew ever assigned to

Thunderbird as their primary aircraft. After the Moncur crew finished their 28 missions, Thunderbird

became a "first mission ship" given to new crews to get them off to a good start–and a good start

it was, as no regular crew member was ever injured on a Thunderbird mission.

Photos show partially painted and completed Nose Art. The Thunderbird nose art was

painted by Anne Josephine Hayward , American Red Cross Aero Club, Great Ashfield England,

385th Bomb Group. Ms Hayward is considered one of the more accomplished nose art artists of

World War II. She also painted the nose art for B-17s: Dragon Lady, Pregnant Portia, Shack Bunny,

Madame Shoo Shoo and others.
